Product description
Data center decisions are driven by TCO. Higher capacity hard drives play a leading role in reducing TCO. An 18TB data center HDD provides 29% more capacity in the same form factor as a 14TB HDD. Higher capacity HDDs enable data centers to lower CapEx by reducing supporting hardware and system level costs when compared to lower capacity drives. Helium-sealed, low power, high reliability drives reduce energy and maintenance costs, contributing to OpEx savings. For example, a data center using 18TB HDDs vs. 14TB HDDs requires 22% fewer racks while consuming 21% less power per TB at idle, resulting in significant overall TCO reduction for data center environments.
- 18 capacity¹ in a standard 3.5-inch form factor, Manufacture's 5 Years Warranty
- CMR technology works with all capacity enterprise applications & environments
- Reliable, field-proven, 6th generation design
- Industry’s first HDD with Energy-Assisted Magnetic Recording technology
- HelioSeal design delivers outstanding power efficiency
User questions & answers
Question: | TB or 18 TB? specs and pics all different |
Answer: | Some do |
Question: | Is it cover under WD international warranty |
Answer: | I don’t know. It stopped working after about a week and I returned it. |
Question: | Do these come with a 5 year warranty from the manuafacturer |
Answer: | yes it will start making ice again unless you are out of water then you must turn back on after filling |
Question: | Do these (HC 550) have the manufacturer’s warranty |
Answer: | This unit drains from the bottom and has a drain plug. I was not sure about it draining from the bottom but found it more convenient when cleaning. Another benefit is the water being pulled into the tray is raised and will not pull in any debris that may laying on the bottom. This unit also makes ice considerably faster and the cubes are larger than the $400.00 unit I had before. I have no affiliation with the manufacture in any way, I highly recommend it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Reviewers-Please tell us whether using "enterprise grade" as stand-alone or in RAID. This could possibly be cause of failures & low ratings |
Answer: | Use enterprise grade in RAID configurations as it will only retry a certain number of times on a bad block before marking it as bad. Using non-enterprise grade disks in a raid may cause it to become non-responsive because the disk can continue to retry on a bad block instead of marking it as bad and letting the RAID compensate for the bad block. |
Question: | If these drives are new then why are they not warranteed by WD? What is the date of manufacture |
Answer: | Hello Manufacture date is April 2015 |
Question: | Does this drive comes with WD 5-years RAID edition warranty |
Answer: | You can go to Western Digital's web site, enter a drive's serial number, and it will tell you whether it has a WD warranty or not. The 3 drives I just received came back as OEM, which means that WD provides no warranty; it's up to the seller to provide warranty service. UPDATE: I contacted my seller TEK SOLUTIONS, and they replied (on a Saturday no less!) that they offer their own in-house 5 year warranty on these drives, which is great! I recommend checking with your chosen seller before buying for clarification on the warranty details. |
Question: | does it support official 5 years warranty |
Answer: | I have purchased many Western Digital drives from Amazon over the years. Until my most recent order, all were eligible for Western Digital's 5 year warranty. When I attempted to register the last drives I purchased, the Western Digital website indicated that the "Products were not eligible for Registration". This generally means that the drives are being sold outside of the region where it was originally shipped. I am returning these drives to Amazon. The warranty is really important because WD will replace any drive that fails within the warranty period. I've had it happen & WD handles it quickly and painlessly. In my opinion, enterprise drives without a manufacturer's warranty should not be put into service.8/29/2013 Update: Amazon shipped my order for multiple drives from different fulfillment centers (presumably they didn't have sufficient quantity on hand from their primary shipping location). The drives that came from Lexington were not eligible for warranty. Those that arrived a day later from North Las Vegas were able to be registered for warranty coverage. The labeling on the WDC boxes was slightly different, so I conclude that the Lexington drives were `gray market'. I hope this is a onetime aberration, but for the foreseeable future, I'll by my enterprise drives elsewhere. |

Question: | When i click "compare to similar items" the chart shows that this drive is 10000 rpm. is this chart inaccurate |
Answer: | Yes. We traveled for 9 hours and when cooler stays plugged in, the temperature stayed at 30 degrees Fahrenheit. We transported frozen food on a trip and it stayed frozen. Highly recommended. |
Question: | Will this work in a PS |
Answer: | The label says 12Volts 4.6Amps 55 Watts max. The AC adapter draws 1.5 Amps @ 120 Volts if you are using it which is handy when you get to the motel or if you want to pre-cool the cooler before you get in the car |
Question: | What's the RPM |
Answer: | The fuse within the supplied dc cord has a 7.5 amp rating. This Customer also purchased a Jaco ac-dc adapter (JSP-016) as other purchasers had misgivings of inadequate output from other adapters.. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the 2tb (st2000dm008) internal hard drive cmr or smr |
Answer: | The 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB drives are all SMR, which means they are slow for random writes and not suitable as boot drives. (Google "Why SMR drives are sub-optimal for write-intensive workloads".) |
Question: | Is this really 7200rpm? the model number suggests otherwise |
Answer: | I got the ST4000DM004 which claims 7200 rpm on amazon and my computer is reporting it has a media rotation rate of 5425 rpm |
Question: | Is a sata cable included in the package |
Answer: | Cables not included. You can buy a SATA data cable and likely the appropriate power cable for your computer right here on Amazon. Depending on your power supply, the power cable may already be connected to it in your computer -- some have that and some do not. |
Question: | Is this 7200 or 5400rpm |
Answer: | Only the 1 TB (#ST1000DM010) and 2 TB (#ST2000DM008) models are 7200, all the larger models are 5400. Both the llisted speed and model number change in the product description as you pick different disk size options. This is consistent with Seagate's website -- From the home page, drill down through (or search for) Internal / Hard Drives / BarraCuda - Learn More, and then click the 3.5 inch models tab (NOT the 3.5 inch PRO models tab). Then click on the data sheet next to any model to get a PDF with a table containing all of the models along with their drive speeds and other specs.. |

Question: | Is the red wd drives better for cctv/nvr in raid setup than the purple drives? i hear purple drives are not lasting long. both red and purple are |
Answer: | This is 18TB, |
Question: | Can I use this as an external storage for my desktop |
Answer: | The SN of My 18TB HD has been confirmed on the HGST website, 5years. Good chance to have the I.W. |
Question: | What is the difference between this and the WD Black drive |
Answer: | NO, When I checked the Warranty on both Western Digital and it was not recognized and on HGST and the response was "The drive is not valid for warranty through HGST. Please return product to your point of purchase." I will check with WD but if the manufacturer does not warranty for 5 years as advertised, I will return. |
Question: | of these drives good for 32tb 24/7 dlna nas server? Don’t want to beat a dead horse here... Really it’s just to stream my 10Bit 4K movies using DLNA |
Answer: | I just confirmed with WD that this is an OEM drive and WD offers no support or warranty. The supplier only claims a one-year warranty. The 5-year manufacturer warranty claimed on Amazon's website is false. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Please purchase mounting hardware and cables separately if necessary. What do I need |
Answer: | You will need a mounting rail for the drive (with screws) to secure it in the computer, similar to http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Universal-Mounting-Bracket-BRACKET/dp/B0001UZQWG/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1402791368&sr=1-2&keywords=hard+drive+mounting+rail+kita SATA cable to connect to your motherboard if you do not have an extra available, such as: http://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-18-Inch-Locking-90-Degree-108783/dp/B009GUXU52/ref=pd_sim_pc_23?ie=UTF8&refRID=1039H3T1A80RRZ6K7P7H,and an available power plug or Y-cable (the white 4 pin or 6-pin) depending on what power cables your computer has, again depending on whether your computer has an extra alreadyhttp://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-PYO2SATA-Power-Splitter-Adapter/dp/B002N2EHVQ/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1402791237&sr=1-4&keywords=computer+power+y+cableorhttp://www.amazon.com/Computer-Molex-Power-Supply-Splitter/dp/B001PI9AAC/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1402791237&sr=1-3&keywords=computer+power+y+cableYour computer may already have a full width cable internally, in which case it will provide both power and communication |
Question: | Is everything I need to install this drive in my desktop included in the package |
Answer: | It only includes the drive. You have to make sure you have a SATA cable available. You also need screws, but it depends on your PC. Many new PC's do not use screws anymore. Instead they you reataining clips and brackets. On the otherhand, if you are replacing a bad drive, then you can just swap this one in its place. |
Question: | Why is this particular model about one-half the price of the following model |
Answer: | Buyer's beware! The Western Digital website blog is full of complaints on the current 1TB Black Drive . People with the software to test them have found that the new 1TB WD Black is a restickered WD Blue: a single platter with the performance and latency of the 1TB WD Blue. The 2TB, 3TB and 4TB WD Blacks have 3, 4 and 5 platters, not just one and look nothing like the 1TB Black which looks like a WD Blue clone. WD's blog manager is arguing that it "meets the specification" which has conveniently been neglected by WD and their vendors to list (but not on NewEgg which has the throughput of the1TB WD Black listed on a WD round up of the Black Series. Customers are saying they do NOT meet their expectation and that the extended warranty is not a comfort since what they wanted was a "high-performance" drive, not a reduced performance drive with better endurance.I would want to see a drive that looked like its family, not like another product line. Read the comments before you buy, then decide what you want to do. |
Question: | So many of these reviews say the drives are old (pass their 5 year warranty). Is this true |
Answer: | You Get A warranty for 5 years no matter what as far as the age of these drives i have no idea but that does not matter since you get a 5 year warranty no matter what and they are great drives they offer great performance definitely worth the price get this drive for your laptop you wont be disappointed |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this be a good choice for a replacement internal drive on a hr-24 directv dvr? any recommendations |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | What would be the primary reasons for buying this one over the 5400rpm drive |
Answer: | I guess it depends on amazon's stock. Mine were manufactured a month before I received them. If you order now I'm confident you get 2020 drives. |
Question: | What is the difference between 3tb purple wd30purz and wd30purz, very confusing |
Answer: | The drives I purchased were manufactured about a month before I received them. I believe these drives are still manufactured in the same factories which belonged to Hitachi before they were bought out by WD. But I don't know whether the particular drive you are looking at was on stock at Amazon or the supplier for longer than that. However, I would suggest you don't need to worry about the manufacturing date, as the warranty will start on purchase date. Let me tell you, these are the best and most reliable drives you can buy. I have Ultrastars running in my servers since over 10 years (yes, never replaced), none of those ever failed me. |
Question: | can it replace older hhd in nightowl dvr |
Answer: | Hi, The warranty is 5 Year Manufacture Warranty which can be claimed by going on WD.com under warranty claim. If you purchase from us Serverpartdeals and you have a failure we would be happy to assist you in getting a quick replacement. As a seller of these drives, we do not see failure rates to be alarming. More often with Enterprise Drives you have the quality to last you past 5 years of use. Shipping is also very important to make sure there is no damage to your drives, hence we use suspended HDD boxes custom made for these drives do avoid failure and intern warranty claims. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What’s the difference between the 10tb model and the 10tb-wd model |
Answer: | Yup. Genuine WD, packaged for system integrators. No instructions, documents, cables ..... Not a retail package. It saves you a few bucks, if you know what to do and have the odd bits on hand. |
Question: | Can i use this for nas drives |
Answer: | All WD Green drives are 5400RPM. I am not sure where you saw the 10,000RPM specs but they are definitely not for the GREEN Series of drives. The Green series have better cooling and are much more quiet than the faster RPM drives but are slightly slower in performance. Hope this helps! |
Question: | It says manufacture warranty, but I see reviews saying goHarddrive warrantied it, so who would I be sending the drive to and what is the shipping |
Answer: | Yes, but you would need to also purchase a Nyko Data Bank to make this work, even then there may be requirements depending on the size (ie: sleep mode). |
Question: | Do Certified refurbished hard drives show power on hours in smart stats? Or is that wiped |
Answer: | It seems to use a variable RPM between 5200 and 7200.Source:http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/western-digital-intellipower-hard-drives.178122/ |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this drive smr if so i don't want it |
Answer: | No, it’s not. All Ironwolf and Itonwolf pro drives are SMR free, according to Seagate |
Question: | Does any one know a case where 3 could fit inside |
Answer: | I have 3 of these in a Synology 4 bay NAS DiskStation DS918+ works great! |
Question: | I purchased (2) 12-tb: anyone knows why i get 10.91-tb for each? why are we short |
Answer: | manufacturer considers 1 Megabyte to be 1000 Kilobytes, 1 Gigabyte to be 1000 Megabytes, 1 Terabyte to be 1000 Gigabytes and so on. This is correct considering that kilo means 1000 and mega means 1000000 (10^6). However, computers calculate on base 2 and to them, 1 MB is actually 1024 kilobytes, 1GB is 1024MB and 1 TB is 1024GB. This difference in the method of computation is responsible for this "missing space." Let's take an example of a 500 GB hard disk. From a manufacturer's point of view, the 500GB will have 500*1000*1000*1000 = 500000000000 bytes. From a computer's point of view, 500GB is actually 500*1024*1024*1024 = 536870912000 bytes. So, a hard drive that promises to have 500 GB storage space will actually display 465.66GB, 536870912000-500000000000 = 36870912000 bytes (34.34GB) less storage space when connected to a computer. This is true of every drive you buy |
Question: | Can this be used as a normal hdd storage drive for a desktop pc |
Answer: | I have two NAS drives in my computer, and they work great. I bought two easystore external hard drives and removed the hard hard drives from the case. The hard drives are 5400 rpm drives. I only archive things on those drives, and they work great. The 7200 rpm drives are better for gaming but more expensive. The easystores only costed me $150. They also have a 256mb cache. |
