Answer:	manufacturer considers 1 Megabyte to be 1000 Kilobytes, 1 Gigabyte to be 1000 Megabytes, 1 Terabyte to be 1000 Gigabytes and so on. This is correct considering that kilo means 1000 and mega means 1000000 (10^6). However, computers calculate on base 2 and to them, 1 MB is actually 1024 kilobytes, 1GB is 1024MB and 1 TB is 1024GB. This difference in the method of computation is responsible for this "missing space." Let's take an example of a 500 GB hard disk. From a manufacturer's point of view, the 500GB will have 500*1000*1000*1000 = 500000000000 bytes. From a computer's point of view, 500GB is actually 500*1024*1024*1024 = 536870912000 bytes. So, a hard drive that promises to have 500 GB storage space will actually display 465.66GB, 536870912000-500000000000 = 36870912000 bytes (34.34GB) less storage space when connected to a computer. This is true of every drive you buy

Answer:	I have two NAS drives in my computer, and they work great. I bought two easystore external hard drives and removed the hard hard drives from the case. The hard drives are 5400 rpm drives. I only archive things on those drives, and they work great. The 7200 rpm drives are better for gaming but more expensive. The easystores only costed me $150. They also have a 256mb cache.

Answer:	Hard drives almost never come with mounting screws. The screws come with the chassis that you are going to mount the drive into. BTW these are standard hard drive mounting screws and no different from any other hard drive.

Answer:	Yes, this drive can mounted at any angle. In 15 years of using hundreds of Seagate drives like this one I have only had two fail. The two failures were in severe environments.

Answer:	The drop distance is inversely proportional to the capacity (DS = 1/TB) in meters. So a 4TB drive should have a drop distance of a 1/4 meter.
Question:	Can this be used as a hard drive in a stand-alone PC or does it have to be used on a network
Answer:	This is a "bare drive" and must used in in a "host" device that has a SATA controller - such as a PC (either stand-alone or on a network), or in a NAS box on a network. It is designed for NAS applications but would work okay in a regular desktop computer with a SATA interface (but not in an older IDE interface). This will not fit into a laptop. You will need to add both power and SATA cables to your purchase if you buy this since they are not included with this had drive.

Answer:	I have a Synology DS1812+ with eight standard Seagate 3TB desktop drives, and a five bay expansion chassis with five of these Seagate 4TB NAS drives. Over the past two or three years that it's been running, I've had to replace about 5 of the 8 desktop drives, but not one single one of the NAS drives. Now as the desktop drives are failing, I'm replacing them one at a time with the NAS drives, as I can't afford to keep buying new drives every 3 months or so, since most of the drives are out of warranty now. Even though these may cost a few bucks more up front, they certainly save me money in the long run, since they are better designed to handle the heat and 24 hours/day usage of a typical NAS. I feel much more confident with the data that is on these drives than the data on the desktop drives, since these drives seem to fail so much less frequently (at this point, I can't even give you a comparison since not one of these has ever failed, yet - knock on wood).
Question:	This drive is $30 more than the ST4000DM000. Both NAS capable and 4TB. What's the benefit for the extra
Answer:	You mainly get better reliability for your extra 30 dollars. One massive difference is that this product(ST4000VN000) is rated to be on 24/7/365 where as the other is only supposed to be on for 27% of that value. This drive is supposed to be able to stay on much much longer than the normal drive as well. Most importantly, this drive's firmware is a mix between standard desktop drives and enterprise class drives. You get features like TLER (gives your controller several seconds to figure out whats going on before declaring a drive as failed) which are extremely important for a NAS or a RAID. This drive also uses less power (aka, generates less heat) and when it's sitting in a NAS with little airflow, it can help as well.If you are going to build a NAS and you don't want to use enterprise class drives, this is the next best thing. I personally would never stick an ST4000DM000 in a raid/nas.

Answer:	It should work fine. My recommendation were to change the other drives as well - assuming you have more than one drive in there. In case you are running a prior existing drive in a raid 1 configuration and are replacing a failed mirror drive you wont be able to use the full drive size. As i said before I recommend using same drive type with preferably same firmware across all drives in a Nas unit.

Answer:	No idea. Mine failed and I could get no response from them or the extended warranty I bought on Amazon. Totally useless.

Answer:	Yes. It's a bit of overkill as it's designed to run 24/7/365 along with other drives that will vibrate at their own frequencies. A desktop drive can be purchased for a lower price.

Answer:	Short answer: No Seagate Ironwolf Pro HDD's do not support the obsolete AAM protocols. They have rotational vibration sensors and dampers which make the drive quiet. Long answer: Automatic Acoustic Management (AAM) was a feature popularized by WD in which the spin up rate of the disks in a HDD was slowed down to reduce vibration and noise. This feature was declared obsolete in the 2010 ATA protocols because it made the drive spin up slowly and increased access times. Seagate Ironwolf Pro NAS drives are made to run 24/7/365 @ 7200 rpm. These drives spin up as quickly as any HDD that I ever tried including 15,000 rpm drives. They are not "green drives" which spin down and back up to conserve energy. The drives have rotational vibration sensors and self correct for drive eccentricities. The result is that the Ironwolf and Ironwolf Pro HDD's are very quiet. I have WD Reds, HGST's, and Toshiba drives along with Seagate Ironwolf and Ironwolf Pro 4TB, 6TB, 8TB, 10TB and 12 TB drives. Answer:	Yes, you can use it. I'd recommend, though, that you use an SSD drive for your OS and gaming installs this for your additional storage.
Question:	Only 9.1 tb usable, was there already a partition, a hidden one maybe? what format did you use? ext4, ntfs, zfs, etc
Answer:	Because HDD manufacturers count bytes different compared to MS or other OSes. 1024 is the proper value due to the way that's how binary works on computer systems. Manufacturer: 1 KB = 1000 byte Microsoft: 1KB = 1024 byte hence the difference. You also lose some of the space as overhead when you format it to a certain files system...NTFS, FAT...etc but that is negligible compared to the manufacturer's way of byte counting.

Answer:	They are different drives with different purposes. Both are good drives, but enterprise are generally made with different components, different firmware, different purposes, and usually different MTBF. So, for what that's worth, pick the right drive for the purpose.With Seagate specifically, NAS and Desktop drives used bottom mounted motors, while their enterprise line uses dual top and bottom mounted motors. The voice coil magnets and vibration dampening are different. Acu-trac vs advanced Acu-trac. Workload rating on enterprise drives and enterprise NAS drives are generally around 300TB per year, where NAS are generally around 180TB. Seagate NAS drives are usually recommended for 1-8 drive bays, while enterprise and enterprise NAS scale above 16 bays.
