User questions & answers
Question: | Is the 2tb (st2000dm008) internal hard drive cmr or smr |
Answer: | The 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB drives are all SMR, which means they are slow for random writes and not suitable as boot drives. (Google "Why SMR drives are sub-optimal for write-intensive workloads".) |
Question: | Is this really 7200rpm? the model number suggests otherwise |
Answer: | I got the ST4000DM004 which claims 7200 rpm on amazon and my computer is reporting it has a media rotation rate of 5425 rpm |
Question: | Is a sata cable included in the package |
Answer: | Cables not included. You can buy a SATA data cable and likely the appropriate power cable for your computer right here on Amazon. Depending on your power supply, the power cable may already be connected to it in your computer -- some have that and some do not. |
Question: | Is this 7200 or 5400rpm |
Answer: | Only the 1 TB (#ST1000DM010) and 2 TB (#ST2000DM008) models are 7200, all the larger models are 5400. Both the llisted speed and model number change in the product description as you pick different disk size options. This is consistent with Seagate's website -- From the home page, drill down through (or search for) Internal / Hard Drives / BarraCuda - Learn More, and then click the 3.5 inch models tab (NOT the 3.5 inch PRO models tab). Then click on the data sheet next to any model to get a PDF with a table containing all of the models along with their drive speeds and other specs.. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the rotational speed of this hard drive? I'm asking because I don't see it listed here |
Answer: | It's 7200 |
Question: | What is the warranty |
Answer: | As other reviewers have mentioned, all Seagate drives sold on the Amazon Seagate page have no warranty of any kind. DO NOT BUY THESE DRIVES. |
Question: | This drive was made for datacenters. Can it be used in a regular pc as a separate drive besides the main drive containing the operating system |
Answer: | As long as you have a modern PC. It's typical SATA III interface. The only issue is with older PCs because you need a BIOS that can deal with GPT partitions. But really, if you have something that came out after around 2010 - 2012, the BIOS should be more modern. BIOS, being software/hardware = firmware that's involved with the basic functionality of the hardware that's part of the PC, which is what brings the PC up to the state of being able to load an operating system, such as Windows or Linux. |
Question: | Are these retail or oem? seagate won't warranty oem drives |
Answer: | I emailed them this question about the 8TB Seagate Exos 8TB Internal Hard drive, and at least they were honest. (saberPC). I chose not to waste my money on a 'questionable' 5 YEAR warranty from a company that may very well not be around in 5 years, and even if they are, a company with a 10% 'unsatisfied' customer raises some serious red flags. Better to spend an extra 50 bucks and get a real warranty from Seagate. 5 years is a LONG time. 'The Seagate hard drives that we are selling are OEM drives which are all brand new and sealed from the factory. The warranty is from us that we offer an industry standard 5-year warranty on all hard drives and we have been in business for over 12 years. So once the device is not working under the warranty, all you need to do is to email or call us, and provide us the serial no, and that is it. Please let us know if you still have questions! Best, SabrePC' |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why is my 10tb drive saying it only has 8.73 tb of useable space? it should be roughly 9.3 tb |
Answer: | Yes I have this issue as well. When running a raid it will set up to A safe cache to a largers size due to all the drives. How many drives are you using? Check out the Manufacturer website. This is how I found why I was getting this as well. I'm running 5 drives in a Z2 config. |
Question: | What's the difference between st10000vn0008 and st10000vnz008/n |
Answer: | don't know... looks like someone had ambiguous or conflicting information |
Question: | Will it work for a MacBook Pro |
Answer: | I am not sure. These drives (RED label)work for NAS devices for a specific need. They good for video; photos and music storage. They are a bit more expensive. I honestly do not know why you want them for a macbook. Since you have the cash, buy an SSD drive instead. |
Question: | Why are the prices constantly changing |
Answer: | Stock and Demand for Materials change the price. |

Answer: | its a standard sata 3.5 hdd... |
Question: | Whats the difference between the st8000nm0055 and st8000nm000a |
Answer: | According to the datasheet, the ST8000NM000A is newer and lighter (by 64 g) and has better shock protection than the older ST8000NM0055, but the speed ratings are the same. Perhaps they were able to increase areal density and use one fewer platter? Also, the newer drive has SuperParity and a vibration spec. The newer drive uses more power. Essentially, very little. The models are 2 years apart. |
Question: | What's the "real" difference between this "enterprise capacity" and the "barracuda pros"? a chart here, but all categories same acc. to top of pages |
Answer: | Both the Enterprise and Barracuda Pro has a 5 year rating. That said, the drive's ability to withstand vibration and heavy throughput (as well as options for a particular use should also be considered). The Enterprise series is Seagate's workhorse drive for high demand/reliability and tasking typically targeted for large scale storage systems. An indicator of this is that the "Enterprise" series has a considerably higher workload capacity than the Barracuda Pro series (500TB/year vs 300TB/year).The below links should help you determine your needs and understand how these ratings are derived:ENTERPRISE SERIES:http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/005902en?language=en_UShttp://www.seagate.com/tech-insights/how-to-select-the-right-hdds-for-demanding-data-centers-master-ti/http://www.seagate.com/enterprise-storage/hard-disk-drives/enterprise-capacity-3-5-hdd/"Built to support enterprise-class nearline workloads of 550TB per year and backed by a 2M hour MTBF and 5-year limited warranty"============================================================BARRACUDA PRO SERIES:The Barracuda Pro series is given a workload rating of 300TB/Year (found at):http://www.seagate.com/www-content/product-content/barracuda-fam/barracuda-new/en-us/docs/barracuda-pro-ds-1901-6-1701us.pdf"A 5-year limited warranty and 300TB/year workload limit"I hope this helps point you in the right direction for your needs.- Steve |
Question: | I have a seagate central nas drive and i would like to upgrade the 3tb storage space to 8tb, i would like to know if the seagate central supports it |
Answer: | Seagate central will support it, but after a few months or so, your gonna notice some changes. Soon it'll start growing facial hair in places, its voice will start to go deeper, and start hanging out with a different crowd. At times it feels like it doesn't even acknowledge your existence anymore its becoming its own. Soon it'll flock and do its own thing, and maybe every once in a while call back and visit during the holidays. But at the end of the day you'll always have the memories to cherish and one day down that road they'll go though the same moments like these and suddenly realize the strife you went though being a single parent. 10/10 would buy again |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the speed of the 4tb, RPM??? thanks |
Answer: | I have used Enterprise drives in a RAID-5, using an LSI MegaRAID 8 port controller in the past. But while still in warranty, one drive failed, and before the hot standby could be fully incorporated, a second drive failed. All data was lost. Ironwolf class drives are made specifically for use in a NAS as a RAID drive. I would suggest looking at those. I just purchased 5x 10TB Ironwolf drives, and a Synology DS1019+, set up with a 4x drive RAID-5, and a hot spare in slot 5. I am still setting it up backups and sync, but hope this won't fail like my first attempt with a RAID. |
Question: | So will this work for a ps4 by itself or will i have to buy that ugly nyko bank thing |
Answer: | Buyer beware. A lot of drives are resold as OEM at Amazon. If OEM than your warranty is through the seller. That means not WD will replace your drive but the reseller. Compare the cost to buying direct and know the consequences. I have over 50 WD drives and it is much easer to deal with one vendor for replacement vs finding the exact receipt for a drive. Assuming they are in business in 5 years. Also buy from amazon they offer better return policy. |
Question: | What is the spindle spped for this drive |
Answer: | As a boot drive it would need to use the 64-bit version of Windows (and you'd need EFI BIOS), but just for a storage drive both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7 should work. As for any partitions larger than 2 TB, you'll need to partition using the GPT option. |
Question: | Does this come with the free NSA spyware |
Answer: | Not to boot. But using it successfully in 2008 Mac Pro as a plex server. 4 drives, raid 1+0, softraid. Working perfectly well. |
