11 best hard drives
Hard drives, also known as hard disk drives (HDDs), are critical components of computers and electronic devices that serve as primary data storage solutions. They are widely used for storing and retrieving digital data, including operating systems, software applications, documents, media files, and more. Here is an overview of key information about hard drives:
Storage Technology: Hard drives use magnetic storage technology to store data. They consist of one or more rigid disks (platters) coated with a magnetic material that stores digital information.
Internal Hard Drives: Internal hard drives are installed inside a computer or electronic device. They are the primary storage devices for most computers and laptops. These drives come in various form factors, with 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch being the most common sizes for desktops and laptops, respectively.
Capacity: Hard drives are available in a wide range of storage capacities, from a few gigabytes (GB) to multiple terabytes (TB) or even petabytes (PB) for enterprise-level drives. The capacity of a hard drive determines how much data it can store.
Read and Write Speeds: The speed at which data can be read from and written to a hard drive is an important factor in its performance. Faster drives tend to provide quicker access to data.
Form Factors: Hard drives come in different physical sizes and interfaces. The two main form factors for internal hard drives are 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch, with SATA and SAS being common interfaces. M.2 and NVMe drives are smaller, faster, and commonly used in laptops and desktops for high-speed storage.
External Hard Drives: In addition to internal drives, external hard drives are available for portable and additional storage needs. They connect to computers via USB, Thunderbolt, or other interfaces, providing an easy way to expand storage or back up data.
Reliability and Lifespan: Hard drives are mechanical devices with spinning disks, and over time, they can experience wear and tear. It's important to regularly back up data to prevent data loss due to drive failure. The lifespan of a hard drive can vary based on usage and manufacturer.
Solid-State Drives (SSDs): While traditional HDDs are still widely used, SSDs have gained popularity due to their faster performance and increased durability. SSDs use NAND flash memory instead of spinning platters, resulting in faster data access speeds.
Usage: Hard drives are used in various applications, including personal computers, servers, gaming consoles, DVRs, and more.Enterprise-grade hard drives are designed for reliability and continuous operation in data centers.
Data Backup: To safeguard important data, it's recommended to create regular backups, whether on an external hard drive, a network-attached storage (NAS) device, or in the cloud.
When choosing a hard drive, consider factors like storage capacity, speed, form factor, and budget to ensure it meets your specific needs. Additionally, consider future-proofing your storage solutions as data storage requirements tend to increase over time with the growth of digital content.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the 2tb (st2000dm008) internal hard drive cmr or smr |
Answer: | The 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB drives are all SMR, which means they are slow for random writes and not suitable as boot drives. (Google "Why SMR drives are sub-optimal for write-intensive workloads".) |
Question: | Is this really 7200rpm? the model number suggests otherwise |
Answer: | I got the ST4000DM004 which claims 7200 rpm on amazon and my computer is reporting it has a media rotation rate of 5425 rpm |
Question: | Is a sata cable included in the package |
Answer: | Cables not included. You can buy a SATA data cable and likely the appropriate power cable for your computer right here on Amazon. Depending on your power supply, the power cable may already be connected to it in your computer -- some have that and some do not. |
Question: | Is this 7200 or 5400rpm |
Answer: | Only the 1 TB (#ST1000DM010) and 2 TB (#ST2000DM008) models are 7200, all the larger models are 5400. Both the llisted speed and model number change in the product description as you pick different disk size options. This is consistent with Seagate's website -- From the home page, drill down through (or search for) Internal / Hard Drives / BarraCuda - Learn More, and then click the 3.5 inch models tab (NOT the 3.5 inch PRO models tab). Then click on the data sheet next to any model to get a PDF with a table containing all of the models along with their drive speeds and other specs.. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this drive smr if so i don't want it |
Answer: | No, it’s not. All Ironwolf and Itonwolf pro drives are SMR free, according to Seagate |
Question: | Does any one know a case where 3 could fit inside |
Answer: | I have 3 of these in a Synology 4 bay NAS DiskStation DS918+ works great! |
Question: | I purchased (2) 12-tb: anyone knows why i get 10.91-tb for each? why are we short |
Answer: | This BS-math ["a kilobyte is defined as 1000 bytes"] was started by Maxtor (IIRC, it was 1991 and it affected the 320 MB hard drives; I had just purchased a 240 MB for $230 at the PX. The 320 MB was only $189, sitting on the shelf next to 240 MB). Before then if you had a 240 MB drive you could put roughly 220 MB of data on it. Drive manufacturers would say 'unformatted capacity: 240 MB' and you did NOT "lose" so much capacity. Track and sector encoding doesn't equate to the difference between (1024^3 - 1000^3). Imagine if you will, someone telling you that a year is defined as 10 months. |
Question: | Can this be used as a normal hdd storage drive for a desktop pc |
Answer: | I have two NAS drives in my computer, and they work great. I bought two easystore external hard drives and removed the hard hard drives from the case. The hard drives are 5400 rpm drives. I only archive things on those drives, and they work great. The 7200 rpm drives are better for gaming but more expensive. The easystores only costed me $150. They also have a 256mb cache. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Reviewers-Please tell us whether using "enterprise grade" as stand-alone or in RAID. This could possibly be cause of failures & low ratings |
Answer: | Use enterprise grade in RAID configurations as it will only retry a certain number of times on a bad block before marking it as bad. Using non-enterprise grade disks in a raid may cause it to become non-responsive because the disk can continue to retry on a bad block instead of marking it as bad and letting the RAID compensate for the bad block. |
Question: | If these drives are new then why are they not warranteed by WD? What is the date of manufacture |
Answer: | Hello Manufacture date is April 2015 |
Question: | Does this drive comes with WD 5-years RAID edition warranty |
Answer: | You can go to Western Digital's web site, enter a drive's serial number, and it will tell you whether it has a WD warranty or not. The 3 drives I just received came back as OEM, which means that WD provides no warranty; it's up to the seller to provide warranty service. UPDATE: I contacted my seller TEK SOLUTIONS, and they replied (on a Saturday no less!) that they offer their own in-house 5 year warranty on these drives, which is great! I recommend checking with your chosen seller before buying for clarification on the warranty details. |
Question: | does it support official 5 years warranty |
Answer: | I have purchased many Western Digital drives from Amazon over the years. Until my most recent order, all were eligible for Western Digital's 5 year warranty. When I attempted to register the last drives I purchased, the Western Digital website indicated that the "Products were not eligible for Registration". This generally means that the drives are being sold outside of the region where it was originally shipped. I am returning these drives to Amazon. The warranty is really important because WD will replace any drive that fails within the warranty period. I've had it happen & WD handles it quickly and painlessly. In my opinion, enterprise drives without a manufacturer's warranty should not be put into service.8/29/2013 Update: Amazon shipped my order for multiple drives from different fulfillment centers (presumably they didn't have sufficient quantity on hand from their primary shipping location). The drives that came from Lexington were not eligible for warranty. Those that arrived a day later from North Las Vegas were able to be registered for warranty coverage. The labeling on the WDC boxes was slightly different, so I conclude that the Lexington drives were `gray market'. I hope this is a onetime aberration, but for the foreseeable future, I'll by my enterprise drives elsewhere. |
Question: | Why is this sata when on the seagate (and every other) website it has an sas connector |
Answer: | Part Number ST8000NM0095 is SAS Self Encrypted Drive 4K. Make Sure you get a compatible system. https://www.seagate.com/www-content/product-content/enterprise-hdd-fam/enterprise-capacity-3-5-hdd/constellation-es-4/en-us/docs/ent-capacity-3-5-hdd-8tb-ds1863-1-1508us.pdf |

Question: | I purchased (2) 12-tb: anyone knows why i get 10.91-tb for each? why are we short |
Answer: | manufacturer considers 1 Megabyte to be 1000 Kilobytes, 1 Gigabyte to be 1000 Megabytes, 1 Terabyte to be 1000 Gigabytes and so on. This is correct considering that kilo means 1000 and mega means 1000000 (10^6). However, computers calculate on base 2 and to them, 1 MB is actually 1024 kilobytes, 1GB is 1024MB and 1 TB is 1024GB. This difference in the method of computation is responsible for this "missing space." Let's take an example of a 500 GB hard disk. From a manufacturer's point of view, the 500GB will have 500*1000*1000*1000 = 500000000000 bytes. From a computer's point of view, 500GB is actually 500*1024*1024*1024 = 536870912000 bytes. So, a hard drive that promises to have 500 GB storage space will actually display 465.66GB, 536870912000-500000000000 = 36870912000 bytes (34.34GB) less storage space when connected to a computer. This is true of every drive you buy |
Question: | Can this be used as a normal hdd storage drive for a desktop pc |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the rotational speed of this hard drive? I'm asking because I don't see it listed here |
Answer: | It's 7200 |
Question: | What is the warranty |
Answer: | As other reviewers have mentioned, all Seagate drives sold on the Amazon Seagate page have no warranty of any kind. DO NOT BUY THESE DRIVES. |
Question: | This drive was made for datacenters. Can it be used in a regular pc as a separate drive besides the main drive containing the operating system |
Answer: | As long as you have a modern PC. It's typical SATA III interface. The only issue is with older PCs because you need a BIOS that can deal with GPT partitions. But really, if you have something that came out after around 2010 - 2012, the BIOS should be more modern. BIOS, being software/hardware = firmware that's involved with the basic functionality of the hardware that's part of the PC, which is what brings the PC up to the state of being able to load an operating system, such as Windows or Linux. |
Question: | Are these retail or oem? seagate won't warranty oem drives |
Answer: | I emailed them this question about the 8TB Seagate Exos 8TB Internal Hard drive, and at least they were honest. (saberPC). I chose not to waste my money on a 'questionable' 5 YEAR warranty from a company that may very well not be around in 5 years, and even if they are, a company with a 10% 'unsatisfied' customer raises some serious red flags. Better to spend an extra 50 bucks and get a real warranty from Seagate. 5 years is a LONG time. 'The Seagate hard drives that we are selling are OEM drives which are all brand new and sealed from the factory. The warranty is from us that we offer an industry standard 5-year warranty on all hard drives and we have been in business for over 12 years. So once the device is not working under the warranty, all you need to do is to email or call us, and provide us the serial no, and that is it. Please let us know if you still have questions! Best, SabrePC' |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I plug this in as an external hdd enclosure with usb 3.0 capabilites and have it function on an xbox one |
Answer: | Yes, the only requirement on the Xbox One side is that the connection be USB 3.0 and the drive be a minimum of 500 Gb. Other than that purchase a reliable enclosure kit that also supplies power and uses the SATA connection already on the HDD. |
Question: | On the picture it shows the hard drive's insides, do I need a special enclosure besides me computer case for this |
Answer: | If your are installing in a Windows PC, that is a new-ish computer (probably any that came with vista and many that came with XP) it will support Serial ATA hard drives, open abbreviated to SATA drives. You should look up the specs on your computer to insure compatibility. This hard drive is a SATA drive so it will install and replace your other computer. I purchased this drive, and also bought an external case. This would allow this internal hard drive to work as an external drive. It plugs into an external power supply and connects to the computer with a USB cable. The external case I purchased here on amazon is a: Sabrent USB 3.0 To 3.5-Inch Sata Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure Black Case.I was installing Windows 7 on my PC. I stalled the WD 1 TB drive in the PC, installed the Windows 7 software, then installed my older smaller drive in the external case. |
Question: | Is this the retail version (boxed) or is it an OEM bulk drive |
Answer: | What do you think you get for $86/4TB? It's OEM without a warranty. If you want that spend $20 more for 2 years with the retail version. For my use I don't need a warranty anyway, odds are it will fail decades from now since I use these as storage mostly sitting unpowered on a shelf 95% of the time (with LTO backups just in case I'm unlucky). The 4 in my PC are the same drives in an 8TB raid1, and they have been spinning 24-7 for 3 years now with no HDD replacement needed. |
Question: | Which 1 TB hard disk you recomend between the Western Digital Blue WD10EZEX or the Seagate Barracuda ST |
Answer: | I have bought and used WD and Seagate hard drives. I have never had an internal WD hard drive fail on me yet, but I have had one of their older Elements external hard drives fail on me. As for Seagate, I purchased an ST2000DM001 (which is the 2tb version) several months ago that has now failed. I lost everything and got a clicking sound, as if it were stuck. Only lasted 5 months. In comparison I have had my 1st WD blue WD10EZEX for more than two years now and I have not had a failure at all. It's extremely reliable, so much so I decided to replace the Seagate one with a another one of the WD10EZEX's. I have 4 hard drives in my computer 1 SSD (For operating system), 2 WD Blues 1tb and an older Seagate one from an older computer (a dell dimension) with about 250gigs of capacity. I'm planning on getting another blue or black 1 tb to replace it later. I definitely would recommend the blues. It's not that expensive, it's reliable and comes with a decent warranty. I would not recommend Seagate. Just can't trust it. No matter what hard drives should last past the warranty, not even a year and it fails? What kind of QC are they having at Seagate? |

Answer: | You will need a mounting rail for the drive (with screws) to secure it in the computer, similar to http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Universal-Mounting-Bracket-BRACKET/dp/B0001UZQWG/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1402791368&sr=1-2&keywords=hard+drive+mounting+rail+kita SATA cable to connect to your motherboard if you do not have an extra available, such as: http://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-18-Inch-Locking-90-Degree-108783/dp/B009GUXU52/ref=pd_sim_pc_23?ie=UTF8&refRID=1039H3T1A80RRZ6K7P7H,and an available power plug or Y-cable (the white 4 pin or 6-pin) depending on what power cables your computer has, again depending on whether your computer has an extra alreadyhttp://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-PYO2SATA-Power-Splitter-Adapter/dp/B002N2EHVQ/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1402791237&sr=1-4&keywords=computer+power+y+cableorhttp://www.amazon.com/Computer-Molex-Power-Supply-Splitter/dp/B001PI9AAC/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1402791237&sr=1-3&keywords=computer+power+y+cableYour computer may already have a full width cable internally, in which case it will provide both power and communication |
Question: | Is everything I need to install this drive in my desktop included in the package |
Answer: | It only includes the drive. You have to make sure you have a SATA cable available. You also need screws, but it depends on your PC. Many new PC's do not use screws anymore. Instead they you reataining clips and brackets. On the otherhand, if you are replacing a bad drive, then you can just swap this one in its place. |
Question: | Why is this particular model about one-half the price of the following model |
Answer: | Buyer's beware! The Western Digital website blog is full of complaints on the current 1TB Black Drive . People with the software to test them have found that the new 1TB WD Black is a restickered WD Blue: a single platter with the performance and latency of the 1TB WD Blue. The 2TB, 3TB and 4TB WD Blacks have 3, 4 and 5 platters, not just one and look nothing like the 1TB Black which looks like a WD Blue clone. WD's blog manager is arguing that it "meets the specification" which has conveniently been neglected by WD and their vendors to list (but not on NewEgg which has the throughput of the1TB WD Black listed on a WD round up of the Black Series. Customers are saying they do NOT meet their expectation and that the extended warranty is not a comfort since what they wanted was a "high-performance" drive, not a reduced performance drive with better endurance.I would want to see a drive that looked like its family, not like another product line. Read the comments before you buy, then decide what you want to do. |
Question: | So many of these reviews say the drives are old (pass their 5 year warranty). Is this true |
Answer: | You Get A warranty for 5 years no matter what as far as the age of these drives i have no idea but that does not matter since you get a 5 year warranty no matter what and they are great drives they offer great performance definitely worth the price get this drive for your laptop you wont be disappointed |
