    User questions & answers

Question: Is this drive smr if so i don't want it
Answer: No, it’s not. All Ironwolf and Itonwolf pro drives are SMR free, according to Seagate
Question: Does any one know a case where 3 could fit inside
Answer: I have 3 of these in a Synology 4 bay NAS DiskStation DS918+ works great!
Question: I purchased (2) 12-tb: anyone knows why i get 10.91-tb for each? why are we short
Answer: manufacturer considers 1 Megabyte to be 1000 Kilobytes, 1 Gigabyte to be 1000 Megabytes, 1 Terabyte to be 1000 Gigabytes and so on. This is correct considering that kilo means 1000 and mega means 1000000 (10^6). However, computers calculate on base 2 and to them, 1 MB is actually 1024 kilobytes, 1GB is 1024MB and 1 TB is 1024GB. This difference in the method of computation is responsible for this "missing space." Let's take an example of a 500 GB hard disk. From a manufacturer's point of view, the 500GB will have 500*1000*1000*1000 = 500000000000 bytes. From a computer's point of view, 500GB is actually 500*1024*1024*1024 = 536870912000 bytes. So, a hard drive that promises to have 500 GB storage space will actually display 465.66GB, 536870912000-500000000000 = 36870912000 bytes (34.34GB) less storage space when connected to a computer. This is true of every drive you buy
Question: Can this be used as a normal hdd storage drive for a desktop pc
Answer: I have two NAS drives in my computer, and they work great. I bought two easystore external hard drives and removed the hard hard drives from the case. The hard drives are 5400 rpm drives. I only archive things on those drives, and they work great. The 7200 rpm drives are better for gaming but more expensive. The easystores only costed me $150. They also have a 256mb cache.

    User questions & answers

Question: Does this Work with tivo
Answer: Simple: 1. These are mechanical drives - not SSDs. 2. Drives vibrate when they spin. 3. The more drives you have the higher the accumulative vibration of NAS from the mechanics of all the drives. 4. Too much vibration for the drive not designed for it means faster death of the drive - anything from bad blocks to electronics. 5. NAS designated drives have higher requirements for being able to cope with vibration and have vibration sensors and algorithms that may alter drive operation in high vibration scenario.
Question: My toshiba 8gb came with two partitions on it already - 2 and 5.4gb. is that how your 8gb hdd was, or is that a sign that it was used and returned
Answer: Your question is impossible to answer. Not enough information. To start with: internal or external? IF INTERNAL You really need to look at your laptop specs to see what can fit into it. Some laptops nowadays no longer come with any room for SATA drives which means you cannot ever install an HDD inside them. These laptops typically either have on-board SSD or NVMe SSD. If your laptop supports SATA drives then most likely it is 2.5 inch drive which is far smaller than this NAS drive. But that is not all the drives also differ in thickness. So you need to know what thickness your laptop supports. E.g. most laptops that support SATA restrict thickness of HDD to 7mm while there are also thicker HDDs on the market. IF EXTERNAL You need an external HDD caddy with the interface supported by your laptop. You really need a caddy with fan as well to dissipate heat.
Question: does it come with migration software
    Answer: https://www.vueville.com/home-security/cctv/nvr/seagate-ironwolf-vs-wd-red-nas-hard-drives/
Question: drive buy limit on a nas drive, makes sense. raid5 or something with not 100% parity overhead would require at least 3 drives. why
Answer: Normal up to 4tb is at 5900rpm, 6 tb above at 7200 rpm. Pro all at 7200 rpm. Warranty 3 yrs vs 5 yrs. MTBF (meantime b4 failure) 1m vs 1.2m and lastly the cache differs from model/size

    User questions & answers

Question: I want to set up a mycloud nas system with four 1 tb hard drives. wd red is not available in 1 tb. what other wd drive would you recommend
Answer: The only NAS drives I use are WD Reds. I have a 16TB Unraid NAS with 5 4TB Reds, and a 28 TB Unraid NAS with 2 8TB Reds and 5 4TB Reds. The only failures in either of the 2 NAS's is with a couple of non WD red 2TB drives. I checked the pricing on CDW, and the 2TB reds are only 14 dollars more expensive than the 1TB, so if you can afford it, that may be the way to go. I have heard that the Seagate Ironwolf is a reliable option but don't have any first hand evidence of that. My experience with WD Reds tell me that they are the only drives I would use in either of my NAS's.
Question: Is this the 68n32n0 model
Answer: No, if you check the label... it's the 68JH4N0 model.. besides, the 68n32n0 is the WD40EFRX-68N32N0, not the WD40EFAX listed here (R vs A).
Question: I just registered 2-4tb wd red hard drives online at wd and it says they only have 115 days of warranty remaining? whats the deal
Answer: Your credit card used to make the purchase probably has extended warranty which usually doubles the manufacturers warranty. Maybe check with WD to verify and then call your card issuer to register with them.
Question: Can you please confirm if this drive is smr or pmr? drives with smr are inappropriate for in zfs storage pools and may cause loss of data
Answer: All of the research I have done points to that this is a SMR drive. If you search for model WD40EFRX, it should be a CMR drive.

Question: Is it possible to use this drive as a normal desktop drive for storage
Answer: Hi, There is no glass or plastic in the opening. Each Lens Filter Adapter Ring is made of durable anodized aluminum. They will last much longer than plastic adapter rings. Best, Mynchie/ECO-FUSED
Question: Can you use this drive as a media storage in a HTPC but not necessarily in a NAS/Server configuration
Answer: Hi, The Step Up Lens Filter Adapter Rings works with various cameras as it allows you to fit larger size lens filters on a lens with a smaller diameter - Sizes: 37-49, 49-52, 52-55, 55-58, 58-62, 62-67, 67-72, 72-77, 77-82 mm.Each Lens Filter Adapter Ring is made of durable anodized aluminum. They will last much longer than plastic adapter rings. Best, Mynchie/ECO-FUSED
Question: how long is the warranty
Answer: Hi, These step-up rings are for use when you have a smaller lens diameter than your filter. As an example, if you own three lenses—one with a 52mm thread, another with a 67mm thread, and a third with a 77mm thread—you want a filter to fit the widest diameter thread size, in this case 77mm, and a pair of step-up rings, 67-77mm and 52-77mm, to couple the larger 77mm filter to the smaller-diameter thread sizes. Please visit our store for more products: http://www.amazon.com/shops/ECO-FUSED Regards, Michelle/Eco-Fused
Question: Silly question, these DON'T have to be used for NAS/RAID. Can be stand alone
Answer: Hi, These lens hoods were designed for DSLR with interchangeable threaded lenses. We cannot guarantee that they will also fit point and shoot cameras like the Lumix fx80. To determine the correct size you need, please look for this symbol somewhere on your lens, "ø" it will be followed by a number. That is the size you need. Best regards, Michelle/Eco-Fused

Question: Can this hard drive be use to replace the 4gb in a toshiba satellite c55-a
Answer: No. You have to buy them separately. Normally your desktop will have extra power cable and SATA Cable.
Question: Does this come with power cables
Answer: I would be in the other camp with WD being the lesser product. These were selected due to NAS manufacture recommendation / compatibility.
Question: Can you please compare newer seagate to wd? i have had trouble in the past with seagate but not so much with wd. thanks
Answer: Hard drives almost never come with mounting screws. The screws come with the chassis that you are going to mount the drive into. BTW these are standard hard drive mounting screws and no different from any other hard drive.
Question: Why does this not come with mounting screws? Having a hard time finding the right ones
Answer: Yes, I actually tried charging while using this light when I was in video recording with my family. Directly plug its USB port to my laptop, and it works well.

    User questions & answers

Question: Why do the number of bays matter to the drive? i've got 18 drives in my unraid nas - couldn't i use this non-pro drive (1-8 bays) in my nas
Answer: Jspeck, the few times I've had problems with these I have always been able to format them and get them to work. I would make sure your cannon rebel t2i is compatible with a 64GB . If so and format won't work. I would return it and request a new replacement or refund. Hope this helps some. Bob....
Question: Can this hard drive be compatible with any laptop? If not what laptop do I need to have the hard drive to be compatible
Answer: Cards labeled SDHC usually have a capacity of 4GB - 32GB, cards labeled SDXC have a capacity of 64GB and larger. SDHC cards work in both SDHC/SDXC devices, SDXC cards work only in SDXC devices.
Question: How do these compare to WD Red 7200rpm drives
Answer: I think Android Smartphones use micro SD cards instead of regular SD cards. Regular SD cards fit into DSLR and pocket cameras. To answer your question, I think it will not fit.
Question: What is the difference between the normal and the pro
Answer: Yes to your first question. I've been using it on a Windows 10 laptop running games and office like a second drive, reliably. It's faster than a 5400rpm HD. High quality SD cards are just that--quality and reliable. The newer your hardware (USB 3.0 etc.) and system the better the results. Spend 30 minutes and google it.External SSD drives perform much better but SD cards are pretty much plug in and forget.

    User questions & answers

Question: Is the red wd drives better for cctv/nvr in raid setup than the purple drives? i hear purple drives are not lasting long. both red and purple are
Answer: I have four of the earlier 3tB versions of this drive in external USB3 enclosures and use them in rotation for critical full system backups. They have served very well in that capacity. I also have one of the 3tB drives in my main daily-driver computer now and it does that quite well although it isn't as fast as some but since it is used mostly for secondary data store it doesn't matter so much. The reason that I have so many of the older 3tB drives is that I upgraded all of the drives in my Drobo NAS to 6tB drives a while back. Those drives as well as five of the 8tB units in another NAS have worked perfectly so I can highly recommend them (for the proper use, of course).
Question: Can I use this as an external storage for my desktop
Answer: The Red is engineered for 24/7 usage. The Black is not.
Question: What is the difference between this and the WD Black drive
Answer: I don't know if they are "DLNA Compliant" or not, but that's more or less how I use them. I believe the WD Red drives are intended for 24/7, NAS and streaming type usage. I've not had a WD Red fail me in several years, where a couple of Seagates have died prompting me to move to the WD Red and the RAID configuration.
Question: of these drives good for 32tb 24/7 dlna nas server? Don’t want to beat a dead horse here... Really it’s just to stream my 10Bit 4K movies using DLNA
Answer: Not sure what you mean by 4Gb? The Ironwolf is a full 3.5 inch internal hard drive and therefore would not fit inside any laptop.

    User questions & answers

Question: I had to replace a seagate st3000m001 in my synology ds212j, will the seagate 4 tb ironwolf pro work
Answer: No idea. Mine failed and I could get no response from them or the extended warranty I bought on Amazon. Totally useless.
Question: This has failed after 4 months of use, how do I go about getting it replaced under warranty
Answer: Yes. It's a bit of overkill as it's designed to run 24/7/365 along with other drives that will vibrate at their own frequencies. A desktop drive can be purchased for a lower price.
Question: Can this NAS drive be used as a desktop drive
Answer: Short answer: No Seagate Ironwolf Pro HDD's do not support the obsolete AAM protocols. They have rotational vibration sensors and dampers which make the drive quiet. Long answer: Automatic Acoustic Management (AAM) was a feature popularized by WD in which the spin up rate of the disks in a HDD was slowed down to reduce vibration and noise. This feature was declared obsolete in the 2010 ATA protocols because it made the drive spin up slowly and increased access times. Seagate Ironwolf Pro NAS drives are made to run 24/7/365 @ 7200 rpm. These drives spin up as quickly as any HDD that I ever tried including 15,000 rpm drives. They are not "green drives" which spin down and back up to conserve energy. The drives have rotational vibration sensors and self correct for drive eccentricities. The result is that the Ironwolf and Ironwolf Pro HDD's are very quiet. I have WD Reds, HGST's, and Toshiba drives along with Seagate Ironwolf and Ironwolf Pro 4TB, 6TB, 8TB, 10TB and 12 TB drives. The Seagate Ironwolf and Ironwolf Pro drives are the quietest drives of all the drives I own. Note: I am not employed by Seagate. I do not have any financial interest in the company. I am not paid to endorse Seagate drives nor have I ever been given Seagate drives for free to evaluate and write positive reviews. My opinions and statements are based on experiences with drives I paid for and use in my own equipment.
Question: Does the ironwolf line suppor automatic acoustic managment
Answer: I use my purple drives with 9 cameras 24 x 7 and have over three years without a single failure. pretty good if you ask me.
