3 best portable raid drive
RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks, and it involves combining multiple hard drives or solid-state drives (SSDs) to create a single storage unit with enhanced performance, data protection, or both. Here are some key points about portable RAID drives:
It enhances storage capacity and read/write speeds but does not provide redundancy. If one drive fails, data loss can occur.
- RAID 1: In RAID 1, data is mirrored across two drives. This provides redundancy; if one drive fails, data remains intact on the other drive. However, storage capacity is limited to half the total drive capacity.
- RAID 5: RAID 5 requires at least three drives. It combines striping and parity to provide both enhanced performance and data redundancy. If one drive fails, data can be reconstructed from the remaining drives.
- RAID 10: RAID 10 is a combination of RAID 1 and RAID 0. It requires at least four drives and offers both redundancy and increased performance. Data is mirrored and striped across the drives.
They often come in an enclosure with multiple drive bays and may support various interfaces like USB, Thunderbolt, or eSATA for connectivity to computers and other devices.
In the event of drive failure, data can be recovered from the redundant copies.
They can range from a few terabytes to several terabytes or more.
g., Windows, macOS, Linux) and the devices you plan to connect it to.
They are commonly used for data backup, storage, and redundancy in both personal and professional settings, providing a balance between capacity, performance, and data security.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this 4tb in raid or two 2tb ssds internally |
Answer: | Seems like you can purchase the case with or without drives installed, but the intention is two 2TB drives that may be run RAID 0 striped as a fast 4TB but perhaps higher failure probability, as RAID 1 which is 2TB with a redundant copy, or as JBOD which would shore up as two separate 2TB drives. There's a small dip switch on the back to set followed by a button press to change the drive's mode. I'm running it as RAID 0 right now for a fast 4 TB which has worked well so far. |
Question: | Will this enclosure work with one drive installed and second bay left empty? Thank you |
Answer: | Yes. |
Question: | will this work with windows 10 pro as independent drives not raid? will this have to be formatted on arrival |
Answer: | yes, it can, Not sure as I did format it, but if you do you can do a quick format, takes a min or two |
Question: | Does it support no raid mode |
Answer: | Yes. Set it up for JBOD (just a bunch of disks) and the drives will function as independent drives. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this enclosure be positioned on it's side (vertically) to save desktop space? [Rather than flat/horizontally as pictured] |
Answer: | Yes, it can be positioned horizontally or vertically. I have two SSD drives in it and since there are no moving parts, then you could place it in any position you feel like. As far as the two SSDs, I simply kept them as separate drives rather than making them both one large drive. This enclosure is one of the best pieces of computer hardware I've bought in some time. Very well made, very well packaged. Total quality in my opinion. I don't even need to use the power supply since I have it plugged into the Type-C port on my laptop. That was a very welcome surprise, one less power adapter to worry about. |
Question: | What is the voltage/amps of the adapter |
Answer: | Okay, I do own this RAID enclosure and will say that I am absolutely pleased with it. Well built and the hardware electronics are completely USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps). In other words, it's not just a Type-C port connection, the electronics fully support the USB 3.1 Gen 2 Standard. Now, I will say that I have never used the power supply to power the enclosure ever. Why? Because I have it connected directly (with a Type-C to Type-C cable) to my new HP Spectre x360 2-n-1. The HP has (2) USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps) Type-C ports. I am able to power the RAID enclosure with the HP and not have to use the power adapter whatsoever. Unfortunately, I have multiple power adapters lying around my computer system. And while I try to be in the habit of using a label machine to print out a label that I can stick on each adapter so that I know which piece of hardware it is for, I failed to do that with the OYEN RAID enclosure. I don't want to try and guess which power adapter it might be and give anyone the wrong information. My suggestion would be for you to go to the manufacturer's website www.oyendigital.com and see if you can contact their customer support with your question. I downloaded the owner's manual but it doesn't give the specs of the power adapter. So try contacting them directly. Good luck, sorry I couldn't be off much help. |
Question: | Can anyone tell me if it is silent |
Answer: | I use it with SSDs and it is totally silent with them. The only noise you will hear using HDDs is the drives themselves. The case adds no sound. |
Question: | When used in jbod mode, is it still possible to read the s.m.a.r.t. values of the two individual drives |
Answer: | Hi, yes S.M.A.R.T. data is supported in JBOD mode and can be viewed using 3rd party applications such as DriveDX, Drive Genius, Hard Disk Sentinel and many others. Thanks! Oyen Digital Support |
