14 best desktop hard drives
Desktop hard drives, particularly external hard drives, are crucial devices for data storage and backup. They provide a means to store, access, and safeguard your digital files. Here's some information about desktop hard drives:
Types of Desktop Hard Drives:
- HDD (Hard Disk Drive): HDDs use spinning disks to store data. They provide a cost-effective option for large storage capacities.
- SSD (Solid State Drive): SSDs use flash memory and have no moving parts, resulting in faster read/write speeds and better durability compared to HDDs. They are ideal for quick data access.
External Hard Drives:
- External hard drives are standalone devices that connect to your computer via USB or other interfaces. They provide portable storage and are convenient for backup or transferring files between computers.
Storage Capacity:
- Desktop hard drives come in various capacities, typically ranging from a few hundred gigabytes (GB) to multiple terabytes (TB) for both HDDs and SSDs.
Connectivity:
- External hard drives connect to computers through various interfaces such as USB 3.0, USB-C, Thunderbolt, or eSATA.USB 3.0 and USB-C are common and offer fast data transfer rates.
Backup and Data Storage:
- External hard drives are often used for data backup to ensure redundancy and protection against data loss. They are also utilized for storing large files like videos, photos, music, and documents.
Portability:
- External hard drives are designed to be portable, allowing you to carry your data with you. They are compact and lightweight, making them easy to transport.
Durability and Reliability:
- SSDs are more durable due to their lack of moving parts, making them resistant to shocks and drops. HDDs are more susceptible to damage from physical shocks.
File Systems:
- External hard drives typically come formatted with file systems like NTFS, exFAT, or FAT32. The choice of file system affects compatibility and file size limits.
Encryption and Security:
- Some external hard drives offer built-in encryption and security features to protect sensitive data.
Use Cases:
- External hard drives are used for various purposes, including data backup, file storage, multimedia storage, gaming, and creating system backups.
Considering your storage needs, portability requirements, and budget, you can choose the appropriate desktop hard drive, be it an HDD or SSD, to effectively manage your data and ensure its safety and accessibility.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the 2tb (st2000dm008) internal hard drive cmr or smr |
Answer: | The 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB drives are all SMR, which means they are slow for random writes and not suitable as boot drives. (Google "Why SMR drives are sub-optimal for write-intensive workloads".) |
Question: | Is this really 7200rpm? the model number suggests otherwise |
Answer: | I got the ST4000DM004 which claims 7200 rpm on amazon and my computer is reporting it has a media rotation rate of 5425 rpm |
Question: | Is a sata cable included in the package |
Answer: | Cables not included. You can buy a SATA data cable and likely the appropriate power cable for your computer right here on Amazon. Depending on your power supply, the power cable may already be connected to it in your computer -- some have that and some do not. |
Question: | Is this 7200 or 5400rpm |
Answer: | Only the 1 TB (#ST1000DM010) and 2 TB (#ST2000DM008) models are 7200, all the larger models are 5400. Both the llisted speed and model number change in the product description as you pick different disk size options. This is consistent with Seagate's website -- From the home page, drill down through (or search for) Internal / Hard Drives / BarraCuda - Learn More, and then click the 3.5 inch models tab (NOT the 3.5 inch PRO models tab). Then click on the data sheet next to any model to get a PDF with a table containing all of the models along with their drive speeds and other specs.. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many RPM |
Answer: | I am 100% certain that the drive inside is 5400 RPM. The 4TB is a ASIN:B013HNYV8I WD Blue WD40EZRZ 5400rpm.See my review: https://www.amazon.com/review/R388G5P0ACHROS |
Question: | I did not realize this has a a/c power cord. does it require a/c power to work or will the usb power it |
Answer: | A desktop hard drive requires both 12 volts and 5 volts for power while a USB port only supplies 5 volt power. A laptop hard drive does not require 12V power which is why portable drives based on such drives can be powered by the USB port. |
Question: | What is the hd speed for this storage device? do they spin at 7500 rpm |
Answer: | We'll need to clarify "speed" vs. rpm to answer the spirit of your question. First, to answer one of the above commenters,- Having RAID doesn't alter the disk spin rate of each drive, and for the original poster the hard drive rpm speed is not necessarily directly tied to the ultimate "speed" you're thinking of, for general questions of speed you should be looking at the Data Read/Write speeds. This unit does have RAID 0 setup out of the box with two 4TB WD Red 5400 rpm drives. But the fact that it's 5400 rpm isn't because it's "cheapo" as mentioned above, it's a very deliberate decision on behalf of the product manufacturers, for very good reason. Most "NAS Certified" spinning hard drives, as the WD Red series is, are 5400 rpm, this is because NAS devices are generally always left on, so that any PC on the network can access the device when needed. Using 5400 rpm drives in this way saves power consumption for each drive; it also keeps the radiant heat down coming off each and every drive in the NAS unit (this unit only has two hard drives but they can have any number of drives: 2, 4, 5, 8, 12, even more in high end units), so if you keep a unit like this on in your room or office it keeps the temperature of the room cooler; it also extends the life of each of the drives, slower spinning disks are proven to be less likely to run into issues than their faster spinning counterparts, and a longer life is CRITICALLY important given the use case of these drives as RAID enabled backup/storage destinations- If RAID 1 is being used, the higher the drive failure rate, the more often you need to be reacting quickly to replace the failed drive, because the second a drive dies in a RAID array you're up against a clock of unknown time-limit counting down to the loss of your data, because if another drive dies before you replace the first and rebuild the array, you will lose all the data on the NAS (in most cases); If RAID 0 is being used as is setup by default, you lose ALL the data the moment EITHER drive dies. So drive longevity is very important. Beyond all those benefits, there's one very important reason to note regarding why it doesn't really negatively impact speed very noticeably when 5400 rpm drives are used- Drives used in a RAID array work as a team, and generally speaking the more drives in a RAID array the faster the read speed, because reads for each file are distributed across all of the spinning disks, meaning the 2 discs in RAID 0 only need to spin up to retrieve half the file each. 3 Discs? 1/3 the seek time (i'm oversimplifying but that's generally a good way to look at it). Given these massive speed increases while working in parallel, any speed bottlenecks you may run into are just as likely to be due to any number of other interface areas. TL;DR- 5400 rpm is GOOD for NAS devices! Increasing to 7200 rpm provides negligible data access speed increases, and could cause various long-term issues. If you need a drive speed increase nowadays you simply pay-up for SSD drives and live in luxury. |
Question: | Does somebody know which hdd is inside the new wd my book 8 tb ? maybe a helium hitachi or a red wd |
Answer: | Previously in the case of the 8TB model WD80EZAZ. As of Jan 2021 (and probably earlier) they use WD80EDAZ, mine was manufactured late Sept. 2020. These new ones don't appear to be helium sealed and run quite a bit hotter. Previously the EZAZ drew 400/500mA while these newer EDAZ draw 700/900mA from the +5/12V rails so that probably accounts for the extra heat. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I take the hard drive out and use it as a regular desktop hard drive |
Answer: | I’ve done this with about 30+ 2tb, 4tb, and 8tb drives over the years- converting an external to an internal- and they are all still running fine to this day. Usually $30-40 cheaper than the internal and you get a free usb cable to boot. Just make sure you don’t hurt your hands while doing it. Twisting a flathead screw driver in the seams seemed like the way to go if I recall. They don’t make the cases easy to open. For someone below: Don’t use these for RAID. NAS rated drives are different because they handle higher heat, able to run 24/7 with cross checks, etc. read more about what makes the iron version a NAS approved drive compared to the standard barracuda. |
Question: | will it work with a mac for time machine |
Answer: | Just reformatted the external hard drive using Disk Utility. Works for Mac :) Im not a tech savvy person, so I found this website to be useful when selecting what option to select when erasing the hard drive. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4276140?start=0&tstart=0I chose to use Journaled as I am using this for a Time Machine back up, like Matthew Chellew suggests in the first answer. |
Question: | Does it work well with an Xbox One |
Answer: | Like a charm, exactly what I purchased it for. Plug into any of the three ports (all 3 of the original XBox One ports are 3.0) and give it a minute. The XBox will recognize it and you have to choose for storage or media. Choose storage for games and you are up and running. Do be aware that this HDD does require its own power supply. I was transferring games within 5 minutes. FWIW within half an hour there was a power outage in the middle of a transfer and the external drive, the XBox One and the data are were ok when power came back on. If a data transfer is interrupted for any reason simply delete the failed portion on the destination drive and start the process over. |
Question: | What is the diference between Seagate 5TB usb 3 model numbers STEB5000100, STBV5000100 and STDT |
Answer: | The STBV is the older "Expansion" model with a lightly textured plastic case and slightly sloped front bezel. Sold only in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific with a 1-year, 2-year, or 3-year warranty, respectively. The STEB is the replacement "Expansion" model for the above with a more interesting texture and feet on one edge to stand vertically. It is sold in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific with a 1-year, 2-year, or 3-year warranty, respectively. The STDT is the "Backup Plus" model that looks like the STBV except with no sloped front and comes with backup software (on the disk) for both Windows and Mac OS, and includes 200GB of cloud storage with OneDrive for 2 years. It is sold in North America only with a 2-year warranty. The STDT comes in capacities of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8TB. The STEB and STBV go up to 5TB.They all use the same SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface. I suspect the internal drives have small differences and firmware, but I can find no information about that. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I plug this in as an external hdd enclosure with usb 3.0 capabilites and have it function on an xbox one |
Answer: | Yes, the only requirement on the Xbox One side is that the connection be USB 3.0 and the drive be a minimum of 500 Gb. Other than that purchase a reliable enclosure kit that also supplies power and uses the SATA connection already on the HDD. |
Question: | On the picture it shows the hard drive's insides, do I need a special enclosure besides me computer case for this |
Answer: | If your are installing in a Windows PC, that is a new-ish computer (probably any that came with vista and many that came with XP) it will support Serial ATA hard drives, open abbreviated to SATA drives. You should look up the specs on your computer to insure compatibility. This hard drive is a SATA drive so it will install and replace your other computer. I purchased this drive, and also bought an external case. This would allow this internal hard drive to work as an external drive. It plugs into an external power supply and connects to the computer with a USB cable. The external case I purchased here on amazon is a: Sabrent USB 3.0 To 3.5-Inch Sata Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure Black Case.I was installing Windows 7 on my PC. I stalled the WD 1 TB drive in the PC, installed the Windows 7 software, then installed my older smaller drive in the external case. |
Question: | Is this the retail version (boxed) or is it an OEM bulk drive |
Answer: | What do you think you get for $86/4TB? It's OEM without a warranty. If you want that spend $20 more for 2 years with the retail version. For my use I don't need a warranty anyway, odds are it will fail decades from now since I use these as storage mostly sitting unpowered on a shelf 95% of the time (with LTO backups just in case I'm unlucky). The 4 in my PC are the same drives in an 8TB raid1, and they have been spinning 24-7 for 3 years now with no HDD replacement needed. |
Question: | Which 1 TB hard disk you recomend between the Western Digital Blue WD10EZEX or the Seagate Barracuda ST |
Answer: | I have bought and used WD and Seagate hard drives. I have never had an internal WD hard drive fail on me yet, but I have had one of their older Elements external hard drives fail on me. As for Seagate, I purchased an ST2000DM001 (which is the 2tb version) several months ago that has now failed. I lost everything and got a clicking sound, as if it were stuck. Only lasted 5 months. In comparison I have had my 1st WD blue WD10EZEX for more than two years now and I have not had a failure at all. It's extremely reliable, so much so I decided to replace the Seagate one with a another one of the WD10EZEX's. I have 4 hard drives in my computer 1 SSD (For operating system), 2 WD Blues 1tb and an older Seagate one from an older computer (a dell dimension) with about 250gigs of capacity. I'm planning on getting another blue or black 1 tb to replace it later. I definitely would recommend the blues. It's not that expensive, it's reliable and comes with a decent warranty. I would not recommend Seagate. Just can't trust it. No matter what hard drives should last past the warranty, not even a year and it fails? What kind of QC are they having at Seagate? |

User questions & answers
Question: | Mine makes popping noise while the drive is writing. Is this normal, or should I return it |
Answer: | Inside this housing is a 2.5" laptop-style HDD, with a transfer rate of 135MB/s. Also, the interface is actually USB-C, which is "Thunderbolt 3-compatible" but is not Thunderbolt 3. What this means is that USB-C drives can be connected to Thunderbolt 3 ports and they work (as part of the TB3 spec). All of that said, the drive itself is the limiting factor in the transfer rate. Many manufactures like to put out the "5GB Transfer" funny business in their specs, but they are really only referring to what the port or cable is "capable" of, however the actual hard drive determines how fast it can read and write regardless of connection used. In fact, you will get the same performance out of this particular drive whether connecting to a USB 3.0, USB-C, or Thunderbolt 3 port as all are more than capable of handling the 135MB/s that the drive can put out. |
Question: | I have two and they run extremely hot. Anyone have any advice for fans or stands that can separate the two to help keep them cooler |
Answer: | Never owned a game console but I don’t see why not if it has a USB port-however I found this on the net -Very Important Note It’s very important to note that PS4 only accepts 250gb of usable storage space, not the actual storage capacity. That means if your drive comes with an exact 250gb storage capacity, PS4 system will REJECT it. Why? Data storage manufacturers market drives in terms of decimal (base 10) capacity. In decimal notation, one megabyte (MB) is equal to 1,000,000 bytes, one gigabyte (GB) is equal to 1,000,000,000 bytes, and one terabyte (TB) is equal to 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. PS4 system use the binary (base 2) numbering system. In the binary numbering system, one megabyte is equal to 1,048,576 bytes, one gigabyte is equal to 1,073,741,824 bytes, and one terabyte is equal to 1,099,511,627,776 bytes. Accordingly, the 256gb of USB flash drive is actually 256,000mb, which is calculated by PS4 system as an exact 250gb. But this isn’t the end of story. The drive needs to reserve a few gigabytes for the file system (around 2.5gb). Therefore, the usable storage space on the 256gb flash drive is almost 247.5gb, which is NOT acceptable by PS4 system. That’s why if you’re going to buy a flash drive for the extended storage purpose on PS4, the minimum storage capacity has to be 512gb not less. |
Question: | does it work with time machine |
Answer: | You can format either as NTFS or FAT32. It’s not preformatted |
Question: | does this drive have a fan? and are its cooling capabilities less than the g-technology drives that are elevated by a frame / heat sink on underbody |
Answer: | When people report heat issues it is because the product has a metal case that more rapidly conducts the heat to their fingers. This and similar hollow plastic encased drives could operate hotter as a result but still feel cooler to the touch. I am suggesting that your question cannot be answered without destructive testing. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used for hd or 4k streaming as a nas when connected to a good router like asus 87u or 5300? has anybody tried playing 4k movies off it |
Answer: | It is certain fast enough when connected to a USB 3.0 device. It take only a few second per gigabyte. Unlike the other Wong Sze Cheong 's claims mine is not noisy at all since it has NO fan. The must be using another HD next to this one. Streaming is LOW HD use. A few MB, not 100+ MB like the drive isd capable of doing. I would IGNORE Wong Sze Cheong's evaluation. I have no idea how a fanless HS can be noisy. I have a SSHD in a fan case and it IS noisy unlike this one. My laptop is MUCH noisier when it does run it fan. |
Question: | Can i hook up 2 different windows machines and can they both (for back up) accessed? as in running 2 different backups at different times |
Answer: | +derkalakader. This unit plugs into a USB port on your computer. The two ports on the front of the unit gives you back that port you used, plus one extra. Very handy on a laptop that only has one or two to start with. But to use it on two different computers, you need to do it on the network or just unplug it from one and plug it into the other. Or others. 4TB is a lot of room. I have 4 different laptops backed up on one 500 GIG. drive. But then I have another one that is used for Karaoke, and it uses a 500Gig. drive for back up all by itself. So it depends on what you are backing up. |
Question: | Any idea what is the power rating of this external drive? and also the power adaptor |
Answer: | It doesn't get enough power, I'll say that. This drive grinded to a halt on me after 7 months. Sold and shipped brand new from Amazon. |
Question: | can I use it as extra space on a airport |
Answer: | Yes, you should be able to connect this to your Apple Airport Base Station to give you extra network attached storage. |

Question: | I read that Xbox 360 couldn't use more than a 32gb external hard drive, so how will this work |
Answer: | There was an Xbox live system software update for the 360 consoles that went live on August 30th ending the 16/32GB external memory cap. The USB ports on the console will now recognize external hard drives up to 2TB per slot, and two 2TB hard drives can be used simultaneously giving you 4TB total if you need it. It took ten years, but Microsoft finally listened to the masses. |
Question: | do you have to select whether the Xbox uses the internal or external drive when you are loading up a game? or will it find it automatically |
Answer: | I think the short answer to your question is the Xbox will find it automatically. The long answer is that during initial configuration of the drive (when you connect it the first time) it will ask you if you want to use this to install games to. After this, the Xbox manages the drive and knows where it has installed the games. If you want to clear up space on the internal drive, you can move games previously installed on it from the internal drive to the external drive. You will do this through the Xbox manage storage feature, so the Xbox will know where it installed the game. |
Question: | Does it come with the connecting cord |
Answer: | u mean the usb 3.0 cord? |
Question: | Will any external hard drive work for extra storage or do I have to buy this one |
Answer: | Like others have said, any 3.0 USB drive will work. Funny thing I picked up the same brand 2tb hd and it was like 10 to $15 cheaper as said before, plus it came with a silicone protection sleeve/case and had a 2 year warranty instead of the 1yr that this xbox version drive has. Also this drive is made and assembled in China whereas the same brand 2tb external plain drive is from China but assembled in thailand |
