3 best tv tuner card
A TV tuner card, also known as a TV capture card or TV tuner capture card, is a hardware component used in computers to receive and display television signals. These cards are related to internal components, computer components, computer accessories, and electronics. Here's what you should know about TV tuner cards:
Functionality:
- A TV tuner card allows a computer to receive television signals, including over-the-air broadcasts, cable TV channels, and sometimes satellite signals.
- It converts the incoming analog or digital TV signals into a format that can be displayed on a computer monitor.
Types of TV Tuner Cards:
- There are two primary types of TV tuner cards:
- Internal TV Tuner Cards: These are installed directly inside a desktop computer's PCI or PCIe slots. They are not easily portable but often provide higher performance and more features.
- External TV Tuner Cards: These are standalone devices that connect to a computer via USB or other external ports. They are more versatile and can be used with laptops and desktops, offering portability.
- There are two primary types of TV tuner cards:
Analog vs. Digital:
- TV tuner cards can be classified as analog or digital, depending on the type of TV signals they can receive.
- Analog TV Tuner Cards: These are designed to receive older analog TV signals, which are no longer prevalent in many regions as digital broadcasting has become the standard.
- Digital TV Tuner Cards: These cards are capable of receiving digital TV signals, including high-definition (HD) broadcasts. They are more common in today's market.
- TV tuner cards can be classified as analog or digital, depending on the type of TV signals they can receive.
Recording and Timeshifting:
- Many TV tuner cards come with features that allow you to record TV shows or movies directly to your computer's hard drive. This is useful for creating a digital video library.
- Timeshifting capabilities enable you to pause, rewind, or fast-forward live TV, similar to the functionality of a DVR (digital video recorder).
Software and Drivers:
- TV tuner cards typically come with accompanying software that allows you to set up channels, schedule recordings, and control playback.
- It's essential to install the necessary drivers and software to ensure proper functionality.
Compatibility:
- When purchasing a TV tuner card, ensure that it is compatible with your operating system and the type of TV signals you want to receive (analog or digital).
- Some TV tuner cards also support additional features like FM radio reception.
Use Cases:
- TV tuner cards are commonly used for watching TV on a computer monitor, recording TV shows or sports events, and even turning a computer into a home media center.
- They are also popular for HTPCs (home theater personal computers) that are used to consolidate entertainment systems.
TV tuner cards provide a convenient way to enjoy TV content on your computer and expand your multimedia capabilities. Whether you want to watch live TV, record your favorite shows, or create a personalized media center, a TV tuner card can be a valuable addition to your computer setup.

User questions & answers
Question: | can you plug this straight into a cable line coming into your house |
Answer: | Only if it is attached to an antenna. If it is a line with "cable" service this is the wrong tuner card for you. You need one that has a tuner for "cable" channels, not just ATSC over the air channels. Hauppauge has cards with both. The part number usually has an "H" in them and you'll see two F-connectors on the card, one for an antenna for ATSC over the air channels, one for cable channels. An old card, that had this was WINTV-HVR1600. It is so old it is ISA, not PCI. |
Question: | If i do not have cable, what more do i need to buy to access local stations (abc, nbc, cbs |
Answer: | an antenna, big enough to receive your local stations (depending on your distance from their transmission point, obstacles in the way, and height that you can mount antenna (22 -24 feet is preferred)), probably will need in line amplifier depending on the distance between your antenna and your computer (if greater than 25-50 feet), and you should already have Windows Media Center installed. When you upgrade to Windows 10, you can use the Hauppauge WinTV8 software instead of WMC. |
Question: | Are there Linux drivers |
Answer: | It is my understanding that Hauppauge drivers are included with many Linux versions (distros). I am curently running Linux Mint 19.3 with Hauppauge 2250 pci internal card. If you run dmesg in your terminal window you should see something similar to: [ 13.684556] saa7164 0000:06:00.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0002) [ 13.684691] CORE saa7164[0]: subsystem: 0070:8851, board: Hauppauge WinTV-HVR2250 [card=7,autodetected] [ 13.684694] saa7164[0]/0: found at 0000:06:00.0, rev: 129, irq: 18, latency: 0, mmio: 0xfd800000 [ 13.881484] saa7164_downloadfirmware() no first image [ 13.881496] saa7164_downloadfirmware() Waiting for firmware upload (NXP7164-2010-03-10.1.fw) [ 14.049710] saa7164_downloadfirmware() firmware read 4019072 bytes. Question: | Has anyone folund a similar replacement for windows medias center to record programs |
Answer: | Old question, but I'll answer anyway. When I could no longer run Windows Media Center, I could only find one product that offered the same functionality as WMC, specifically the ability to have a movies only guide. And that product is J River Media Center. It is as good as or better than WMC, although it take more effort to configure it for some functionality. And it records into the TS format, which can be played on practically any media play, such as Roku, Fire TV, Shield, or any of the inexpensive Android boxes. It's not free, but it's not really that expensive. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Since it is a low profile card, does it comes with low profile bracket? Please let me know |
Answer: | No, this is not a low profile card. There is no such low profile bracket from the package.... |
Question: | Does this card work with Windows 10, 64-bit |
Answer: | It worked on my Windows 10 pc. All I had to do was download the drivers and software from the disk, then manually go into device manager and search for the drivers through windows. The device should be listed under “other devices” as a multimedia card. Once you do that, the tvr software license key is in a text file inside the disk. Then I had a weird audio glitch that may or may not be windows 10 related, where there was a rhythmic thinking sound. You have to manually change the audio output in the settings and restart the software. |
Question: | Will this card allow multiple feeds to be viewed simultaneously? (Can I keep a security cam feed on the composite input on-screen while watching tv |
Answer: | No, the TVR software only allows one video feed to be displayed at a time. |
Question: | Are the cables included with this? Thanks |
Answer: | The cables included are IR remote senor cable and FM antenna wire. That is all. |
