12 best pci video capture cards

PCI video capture cards, also known as internal TV tuner capture cards, are hardware components designed to capture and record video and audio content from various sources. These cards are typically installed inside a computer's PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) slot, providing a convenient way to capture, edit, and digitize analog video content. Here is some information about PCI video capture cards:

  1. Capture Sources: PCI video capture cards can capture video and audio signals from various sources, including:

    • Television: They often include built-in TV tuners, allowing users to watch and record TV broadcasts.
    • Analog Video Devices: These cards can capture content from analog video sources like VCRs, camcorders, and analog cameras.
    • Digital Video Devices: Some capture cards support HDMI, DVI, or DisplayPort inputs, allowing users to capture content from digital sources such as gaming consoles or Blu-ray players.
    • Security Cameras: Capture cards may be used in surveillance systems to record footage from security cameras.
  2. Video Capture Quality: The quality of video capture depends on several factors, including the card's resolution support, frame rate, and video compression capabilities. High-end capture cards can support Full HD (1080p) or even 4K video capture.

  3. Audio Capture: Most PCI video capture cards also capture audio along with video, allowing users to record sound from the source being captured.

  4. Real-time Playback: Many capture cards support real-time playback, enabling users to watch and listen to the captured content while it is being recorded.

  5. Software Compatibility: Capture cards often come with software packages that allow users to control the capturing process, edit videos, and save them in various formats. They may also be compatible with third-party video editing software.

  6. Streaming: Some capture cards are designed for live streaming, allowing users to broadcast their captured content on platforms like Twitch, YouTube, or Facebook Live.

  7. Hardware Encoding: High-quality capture cards often have hardware encoding capabilities, which reduce the strain on the computer's CPU during video capture and encoding processes.

  8. Time-shifting and DVR Features: Many TV tuner capture cards offer time-shifting capabilities, allowing users to pause, rewind, and record live TV broadcasts. Some also function as digital video recorders (DVRs).

  9. PCI vs. PCIe: While traditional PCI capture cards are still available and compatible with older motherboards, many modern capture cards use PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) slots for faster data transfer speeds and improved performance.

  10. Compatibility: It's essential to check the compatibility of the capture card with your computer's operating system and hardware specifications.

  11. Multiple Inputs: Some capture cards offer multiple input ports, allowing users to switch between different video sources without needing to disconnect and reconnect cables.

  12. Pass-through: Some high-end capture cards feature pass-through capabilities, enabling the source video to be routed directly to a monitor or TV while being simultaneously captured.

PCI video capture cards are valuable tools for content creators, video enthusiasts, and professionals who need to capture and edit video and audio content. They are particularly useful for digitizing analog video tapes, recording live TV, creating gameplay videos, and streaming live content on the internet. Choosing the right capture card depends on your specific needs and the type of content you want to capture and work with.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this record to 2 separate channels
Answer: This card can accept an input from ONE video source at a time, using either the HDMI or SDI port, but not both at once. Black Magic does make cards with multiple active inputs, such as DeckLink Duo 2, if you need that functionality.
Question: Really torn between this and decklink duo 2. i want to record two signal from two cameras to my live stream. duo is great but only 1080p.any ideas
Answer: Read up on the ATEM mini series. Purchase one to solve your headache. I think you can actually mix formats on it. With the ATEM mini you need no capture card. So you just connect to a third party streaming software. I prefer the ATEM mini pro. It has great capabilities.
Question: Our church is live streaming services, will this card work for two cameras panning from one to the other one is sdi the other is hdmi
Answer: From the BM site: DeckLink Mini Recorder 4K is a low profile PCI Express capture card, featuring 6G-SDI and the latest HDMI 2.0a connections so you can record all formats up to 2160p30 on your computer! The SDI and HDMI inputs automatically detect and switch between all video formats. You even get high dynamic range recording and metadata over HDMI. Question: Will this capture 7.1 sound (dolby digital/digital+/truehd), ac3 (this is what cable/satellite boxes use and i don't need to support idevices
Answer: Tested it will pass 8 channel but will cause a cracking noise in the audio. Usually when you use this you use the stero track to line up the good audio which could be a 7.1 or 5.1 track. AC3 uses 6 wav files packed in a container called ac3. You can extract these to wavs import to davanci resolve and line up or some called sinc the audio then export out a 5.1 ac3 with the video. Usually a prores 422 is a good import codec. Google gereral1 and you can learn how to do this with videos I created to teach you how to capture with this thing. The raw capture in media express you cannot use. 12 gig every so many sec. You need to capture to prores 422 into a video editor then export out 422 10bit then encode to a deliverable format like h265 or h264. You never work native with post production codecs. This is a great card. It wlll capture the 8 channels on uhd signal but the cracking makes it only good for a sinc audio function. I own a happauge col2 and it does perfect ac3 in AAC at 660kbs which is the max bitrate for 6 channel toslink fibre optic capture. I use this card for studio work.
