14 best hd video capture cards
HD video capture cards, also known as internal TV tuner capture cards, are computer components that allow users to capture and record high-definition (HD) video and audio signals from various sources such as cable TV, satellite TV, gaming consoles, camcorders, and more. These cards are typically installed internally in a computer system and provide the necessary hardware for capturing, processing, and storing high-quality video content.
Key features of HD video capture cards include:
Video Quality: HD capture cards support high-definition video resolutions, including 720p, 1080p, and even higher resolutions for ultra HD content.
Input Connections: They have various input ports, such as HDMI, component, composite, S-video, and sometimes coaxial, allowing you to connect different video sources.
Audio Capture: In addition to video, these cards capture audio signals associated with the video source, providing a complete audio-visual recording.
Real-Time Capture: Many HD capture cards offer real-time capture and streaming capabilities, enabling users to record and stream video content simultaneously.
Software Compatibility: HD capture cards often come with bundled software or are compatible with popular video editing and streaming software, allowing users to manage and edit captured content.
Low Latency: Some HD capture cards are designed with low latency, which is crucial for capturing and streaming live gameplay without noticeable delays.
PCIe Interface: Most internal TV tuner capture cards use the PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) interface for faster data transfer rates and better performance.
Recording Formats: These cards support various recording formats such as H.264, MPEG-2, and others, allowing users to choose the best format for their needs.
Hardware Encoding: Some HD capture cards feature hardware encoding, which offloads the encoding process from the CPU, resulting in smoother performance and lower system resource usage.
Multi-Channel Capture: Advanced capture cards may support capturing multiple video sources simultaneously, ideal for multitasking or capturing content from multiple devices.
Users often utilize HD video capture cards for purposes like recording gameplay, creating video tutorials, archiving TV shows, digitizing old VHS tapes, and more.
It's important to ensure compatibility with your computer system, especially in terms of available PCIe slots and system requirements, before purchasing an HD video capture card.Additionally, considering the specific video sources you plan to capture and the desired recording quality will help you choose the most suitable capture card for your needs.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this to connect my Nintendo switch to my iMac |
Answer: | In theory, you should be able to display any device that outputs through HDMI to Any pc that allows a USB webcam. |
Question: | Can i use this to record old vhs tapes (played on my tv by an old vhs player) to my laptop or computer |
Answer: | Yes and no. In theory yes. You can have the VHS player plugged in by yellow, red, white, cables but most TVs will not have an HDMI out. As it is the TV, why would you have a secound screen. What you could do how ever. Get a HDMI converter. Plug the VHS yellow, red, and white cables to the converter. An hdmi out the other end of the converter. Plug the HDMI Into THIS hdmi to USB. You would then be able to record through your laptop. Through the free Camera application. A lot of connectors but it should get the job done. |

User questions & answers
Question: | The video is great, but the audio from the game console is delayed a bit, what do i do |
Answer: | Depends on WHERE the audio is delayed - is it delayed in the software you're using to capture with, or is it delayed via the HDMI loopout going to your TV/monitor? Also, is it a consistent delay (something like always 10ms of delay throughout the entire recording/stream), or gradual delay (the longer you're recording/streaming, the more out of sync the audio becomes over time)? If it's in the software you're using, AND it's a consistent delay, some possible solutions are: 1) When adding the capture device as a source in the software, make sure the video AND audio are added as ONE source, not separate sources. In OBS, the "Properties" of the capture device will have a checkbox at the bottom of the window for including audio, and it's usually unchecked by default, leading people to think there's no audio, so then they go and add a separate Audio source (again choosing the capture device as a source) and for whatever reason, this can cause sync issues. 2) Whether you added them as one source or separate sources, you can go into the Audio Properties for the capture device and set your own positive or negative delay on the audio - so if you have a consistent 10ms delay or something, you can get that back into sync by setting your own -10ms delay for that audio. Now for another possibility - the audio delay is in the software, AND, it's a GRADUAL delay vs constant delay: This is usually indicative of an audio sample rate issue. Somewhere in your GENERAL settings for the software, you'll likely have an option to set the recording/streaming audio sample rate to something like "16 bit 441000hz" or "16 bit 48000hz," etc - whatever option you choose, you need to make sure ALL your sources that are bringing in audio match this sample rate. This isn't something to be set in your software however, it's in the device properties directly via whatever OS your computer has. I don't know the process for Mac, but for Windows 10, you'll want to go down to the speaker/volume icon in the bottom corner, right click and bring up the Sound Settings, under "Input Devices" look for the capture device and hopefully a link that says "Device Properties," click that, then look to the right for "Additional Device Properties," and click that. Now go to the "Advanced" tab in the window that pops up, this is where you set your audio sample rate. Again, it needs to match whatever you've set your software to record/stream at. You may not have any option to change it at all (it could be greyed out), meaning the capture device only has that one sample rate and you instead need to change your software to match it, if possible. If you can't make them match, then unfortunately you're out of luck. There may be software or hardware you can utilize as an in-between sample rate converter but I've not looked into that. You could also look into alternate recording/streaming software that may have more sample rate options compared to what you're using now. As a final point, if you're also using a separate microphone as part of your recordings/streams, the sample rate of that also needs to match everything else. Okay, finally, the last and simplest possibility - the delay (constant or gradual) is NOT in the software, but is in the HDMI loopout going to your TV/monitor: This to me just sounds like a hardware issue (i.e. you got a bad unit and may need to return it). Hope this helps! |
Question: | How does this work? do you use a pc to record? or is it its own thing |
Answer: | A PC with recording software such as OBS is needed to record or Livestream. It's a pass-through. |
Question: | Will this work with Potplayer |
Answer: | Yes, it works. You just need the right cables for connection |
Question: | Is there any way to only use the microphone audio and not the hdmi audio |
Answer: | Do you see the MIC IN? It's a 3.5mm jack for microphone input, I think it's what you need. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone tried to use this with an external hdd or ssd? what is the maximum drive size it supports? several competitors only support up to 128gb |
Answer: | I've used a 250gb SSD with this devise. It may support higher, I haven't tried. PS: Just remember that all capture devices of this type will limit video files to multiple 2gb size. This means if you have a captured video that will need 20gb, it will create 10 files. There seems to be no frames missing as you go from one file to the next. Also, there is no audio output for headsets. I recommend you investigate the DIGITNOW video capture device (Also on Amazon). It is a much better device. |
Question: | how to recording from my laptop |
Answer: | Connect the HDMI out from your computer to the HDMI in on the recorder. Be sure to connect to an external monitor to verify that you are getting signal. |
Question: | What is the DC voltage range |
Answer: | My Unit says 5Volts, 2 Amps |
Question: | Will this unit record play back from my directtv dvr? just want to record 15 min's of a show that i have on my dvr, to my pinnacle studio 23 software |
Answer: | If the connectors going into the device are compatible, this should have no problem recording from a dvr. I use the HDMI input and directly record onto a flash drive at 1080 and then from the flash drive into my computer to edit. It's wonderful with no dropouts that I have encountered. I have been using this nonstop for 8 months with no problems. |
