14 best power supplies

Power supplies, in the context of computers and electronics, refer to devices that convert electrical power from an outlet into a form usable by internal components. Here are key points about power supplies:

  1. Function:

    • The primary function of a power supply is to convert electrical power from an external source, typically a wall outlet, into the appropriate voltage and current needed to power a computer or electronic device.
  2. Internal Power Supplies:

    • Internal power supplies are components installed within the case of a computer. They provide power to the motherboard, central processing unit (CPU), graphics card, storage devices, and other internal components.
  3. Form Factors:

    • Power supplies come in different form factors to match the design and size of various computer cases. Common form factors include ATX, Micro ATX, and SFX.
  4. Wattage and Power Ratings:

    • Power supplies are rated in terms of wattage, indicating the maximum amount of power they can deliver. The wattage requirement depends on the components installed in the computer, with gaming systems and high-performance rigs typically requiring higher wattage power supplies.
  5. Voltage Rails:

    • Power supplies provide different voltage levels on separate "rails" to meet the power requirements of various components. Common rails include +3.3V, +5V, and +12V.
  6. Efficiency:

    • Efficiency is an important factor in power supplies. Higher efficiency means less wasted energy in the form of heat. Power supplies are often certified with efficiency ratings, such as 80 PLUS Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, or Titanium.
  7. Modularity:

    • Modular power supplies allow users to detach and attach cables as needed. This helps in cable management within the computer case, reducing clutter and improving airflow.
  8. Connectors:

    • Power supplies come with various connectors to accommodate different components. Common connectors include those for the motherboard (ATX, EPS), graphics cards (PCIe), SATA for storage drives, and peripheral connectors for devices like fans.
  9. Overvoltage and Overcurrent Protection:

    • Good power supplies include protective features to prevent damage from overvoltage and overcurrent situations. These protections safeguard components from potential electrical issues.
  10. Cooling:

    • Many power supplies have built-in fans for cooling. The fan helps dissipate heat generated during operation. Some power supplies also feature semi-passive or fanless modes for quieter operation at lower loads.
  11. Compatibility:

    • Power supplies need to be compatible with the form factor of the computer case and the power requirements of the components. Ensuring compatibility is crucial to prevent damage and ensure stable operation.
  12. Power Factor Correction (PFC):

    • Power supplies may include Power Factor Correction to improve the efficiency of power usage and ensure a more stable power supply to the connected components.

In summary, power supplies are critical components in computers and electronic devices, converting external electrical power into the required form for internal components. The choice of a power supply depends on factors like wattage, efficiency, modularity, and compatibility with the components and form factor of the computer.

Performance, Reliability, the Convenience of Modular Cabling for Basic Upgrades

CX Series Modular power supply units are an excellent choice for basic system builds and desktop PC computer upgrades, offering high reliability, low noise, and the flexibility of modular cabling.

Low noise

80 Plus Bronze certified efficiency and clever fan design allow for little or no detectable fan noise during regular operation.

Reliable and compatible

CX Series Modular is built and tested to strict standards for trouble-free installation and smooth operation.

Faster installation and better-looking builds

The modular cabling system lets you use only the cables you need. You get to save space and reduce clutter for a cleaner-looking build and improved airflow.

Good looks

The matte black finish, black-sleeved cables and black connectors help give your system a restrained, high-tech look.

Modular cabling system

Since the peripheral power cables aren’t hard-wired to the power supply, you can connect only the cables you need for your exact configuration of PCI-E cards and storage devices. The rest of the cables stay in the box, and not in your PC’s case where they can add to the clutter and interfere with airflow.

Large-diameter, thermally controlled fan

Once you’ve installed a PSU, you shouldn’t have to think about it. Employing a thermally controlled fan makes the CX Series Modular quieter at idle, and the large diameter reduces noise even when you’re pushing your system hard.

Corsair Engineering and Quality Control

Every Corsair power supply is designed by our California engineering team and built to our exact specifications. The same care that goes into the design and testing of our renowned high-power enthusiast power supplies also goes into the CX Series Modular, because you need confidence and reliability regardless of your build budget.

User questions & answers

Question: I have a 600 watt APC UPS (Back UPS Pro 1,000). Am I safe with this 550 Watt Seasonic
Answer: 1=on and 0=off on the power supplies master switch sure jumping the green (on/off control wire) to black (ground) will turn on the power supply.
Question: Is this PSU fully modular or just partial? Which cables are able to be unplugged
Answer: To clear things up, I have the 600 watt version of this. And yes it does have a 8 pin 12v cable
Question: How many hard drives can i plug in
Answer: Joe, it's been a few months since I assembled my system but, as I recall, the cable lengths were all very generous. I don't think this should be a problem for you with this PSU. A big plus is all the variety of cables and connectors that are included with this unit. Very versatile package that was highly recommended to me by a serious "techie" at Tiger Direct. I took his advice but made my purchase here.
Question: I see that the picture shows no wires for the mobo does this power supply have these
Answer: It is semi modular. Semi modular means that that necessary plugs are not removable, but the optional ones for hdds, psu, etc come removable.

Answer: The 80 plus bronze rating of the power supply describes the efficiency of the power supply. Based on this rating, the power supply will draw a maximum of 612 Watts of power from the wall when it is supplying 550 Watts to your computer. This assumes that your computer is actually drawing 550 Watts from the power supply when the power goes out.
Question: If I have the fan exhausting down will the logo on the side be upside down
Answer: I just bought this 08/04/2019 from newegg because it was on sale there. The one I received is FULLY MODULAR. I like it, so far, so good.
Question: How many pcie cables are there
Answer: As of January 2020, this PSU ships with these cables: 1 - 24/20 PSU mobo connector 1 - 8/4 PSU mobo connector 3 - 8/6 PCI-e connectors with 2 connectors per cable 1 - SATA cable with 4 straight connectors 1 - SATA cable with 4 right angle connectors 1 - SATA cable with 2 straight connectors 1 molex cable with 3 connectors 1 molex with 2 connectors 1 molex to SATA cable with 2 connectors 1 molex to SATA 3.3 adapter Bottom line: one can connect however many peripherals as the supplied cables will provide, limited only by the number of mobo connectors. If one has devices with molex connectors, one can connect 5 such devices directly.
Question: Which power supply is better? the br, bq or this model
Answer: I bought the SeaSonic M12II 520 Bronze EVO Edition on newegg.com when it was on sell; It came w/ these "connectors", 1 "M/B 24/20P"; 1 "CPU 8/4P"; 1 "CPU 8P"; 2 "PCI-E 8/6P"; 4 "SATA" connectors @ 760mm, 2 "SATA" connectors @ 420mm; "Peripheral 4P" connectors 3 @ 640mm & 2 @ 420mm; 1 "FDD" @ 101mm. "P" = pins. The 'manual' shows 6 cables, I only used 4, no floppy drive so no "FDD" cable & I didn't need 'Molex'/ "Peripheral 4P" connectors.

Question: Will the 750w be able to handle a 1080 ti and a amd ryzen
Answer: For your information, the Apevia Prestige Gaming PSU is not modular.
Question: can I do gtx 960 sli with this power supply
Answer: It should be a 20 pin or 20+2 for mobo power connector. 4 pin is power for CPU and other components. Will it fit your mobo? Well im sure you know it doesnt go on the mobo, right? If your mobo is an ATX, then the case should use an ATX power supply. The ATX form factor is a consistent set of dimensions that have nothing to do with brand. As long as your case is designed for ATX, then an ATX power supply like this and any other brand of psu labeled as "ATX" will fit.
Question: does it have enough pin for a 5700xt it takes both 6 and 8 pin togheter to power it
Answer: I have already installed the PSU and did not note the UL number. But l did check Andyson's as a supplier to the US. Apevia only uses Andyson according to the official supplier documents. And Andyson only manufactures for two brands to the US. Apevia and EVGA. I don't feel like taking my computer apart, but maybe one weekend I'll try to see if there is a UL number. For all intents - the specs exactly match Andyson and so does Apevia's official supplier lists.

User questions & answers

Question: Out of the box what is the actual size of the power supply . can i use this in a small micro atx case . i have a deepcool matrexx 30 micro atx
Answer: the 430 watt ersion it only comes with (1) PCIE 6+2 connector... many graphic cards need 2 of them plugged in.. so that kinda stinks.. not sure about the 500 watt version of the power supply..
Question: Will this fit a Dell Precision T1700 mini-tower case (not the micro case
Answer: Have an older Dell XPS 420 and when i had the older power supply{375W} I had to use an adapter to increase my 6 prong plug to an 8 because I installed a EVGA GeForce GTX 960. Well This Power supply has two plugs for either 6 or 8 as both plugs will power your video card. Good luck.
Question: my X570 board has an additional 4 pin power besides the 8 pin connector. Does this psu have more than 1 4 pin connector
Answer: Yes, If your Goldfish has a 6 pin PCI molex female receptacle near it's urinary duct (https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Express-Power-Adapter-Cable/dp/B001TK3TJY)
Question: What are the dimensions of the power supply box (not the package
Answer: This is a valid question. People seem to get confused as to why there is a power switch on the computer (which they always use) and another on the power supply itself (which they never use). The power switch directly on the power supply itself provides the ability to cut electrical output to all physically attached components. This is useful, for example, if the COMPUTER power switch (typically on the front of the computer) has been damaged or is otherwise not functioning. It is a directly connected mechanical switch. It is also used during the replacement and building of computers. DO NOT simply turn off the computer and then attempt to replace the power supply. The proper way to do this is:1. Use switch on the current power supply itself and put it in the "off" position.2. Unplug the current power supply from the wall socket.3. Press the power switch on the front of the computer twice (as a safety precaution).4. Take note of all electrical connections, locations, and plug types.5. Remove the current power supply from all electrical connections and physically remove from computer.6. Prepare your new power supply for installation by placing the switch in "off" position.7. Install power supply and connect to all electrical connections as noted in step 4.8. Plug new power supply to wall socket.9. Change switch position of new power supply to "on".10. Use the switch on the front of the computer to power on.
