12 best pc power supply tester

A PC power supply tester is a diagnostic tool used to check the functionality of a computer's power supply unit (PSU). It falls under the category of computer components and is essential for troubleshooting hardware issues related to power supply. Here's what you need to know about it:

  1. Purpose: A power supply tester is designed to verify whether the PSU is providing the correct voltage levels and is functioning properly. It helps users determine whether a malfunctioning power supply is the cause of computer issues like system crashes, random shutdowns, or failure to boot.

  2. Types: There are different types of power supply testers available, but the most common type is a small device with a digital or analog display and multiple connectors. These connectors fit into the various power supply cables (e.g., 24-pin ATX, 4-pin CPU, 6/8-pin PCIe) to measure voltage levels.

  3. Testing Voltage Rails: A power supply tester typically checks the +3.3V, +5V, and +12V voltage rails, which are crucial for the proper functioning of computer components. It ensures that these rails are providing the expected voltages.

  4. LED Indicators: Many power supply testers have LED indicators that light up or display a specific code to indicate the status of each voltage rail. Green lights typically indicate that the voltage is within the acceptable range, while red or no lights suggest a problem.

  5. Easy to Use: Power supply testers are user-friendly and don't require special technical knowledge. You simply plug the connectors into the PSU's cables and observe the readings or LED indicators.

  6. Safety: Using a power supply tester is safer than testing voltages directly with a multimeter, as it eliminates the need to open the computer case and expose yourself to potentially hazardous electrical components.

  7. Diagnosing Issues: When a computer experiences power-related problems, a power supply tester helps you quickly determine whether the PSU is the culprit. If the voltage readings are outside the expected range or if there are no LED indicators, it suggests a faulty power supply.

  8. Affordability: Power supply testers are relatively inexpensive and can save you time and money by helping you pinpoint hardware issues without the need for guesswork or replacing components unnecessarily.

In summary, a PC power supply tester is a valuable tool for diagnosing power-related problems in a computer. It ensures that the power supply unit is functioning correctly and providing the necessary voltage levels to keep the computer running reliably. If you suspect power issues are causing computer problems, using a power supply tester can be an efficient way to identify and address the root cause.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this do any load testing or just a simple voltage check under a 0 load? for finding those flaky ps that won't hold the 5v on a gpu load
Answer: No. All the sheets come in one package.
Question: Do you have to connect the motherboard power supply connector to it or can you test each power source individually? for example, plugging sata only
Answer: Some of them you can’t tell what they say until you put it on which is a little frustrating.
Question: Can this power supply tester act as a psu jumper? thanks
Answer: I didnt have that problem however the tattoos on the sheets were very tiny
Question: How does the tester turn power on? doesn't an atx power supply require a 'signal' from the mobo to the ps so that it turns on
Answer: A washcloth and water. I usually just do it in the shower and it comes right off.

Product features

Operation method:

  1. Insert the power 20-pin or 24-pin and P4, P6 or P8 plug into the corresponding position of the power tester. (if Insert the 20pin or 24pin connector, tester alarms and displays “LL”, it needs to plug in 4P connector! Please make sure 4P connector is inserted in 4P position! )
  2. Turn on the power supply, at the same time, "didi" sounds twice. If the values of each group do not flash, it indicates that the power input of this power supply is normal.
  3. The voltage of IDE / SATA / P6 / P8 interface is displayed by the three lights on the left of the power tester. If their voltage is normal, the three groups of lights (+ 12V, + 3.3, + 5V) will be on. If the light is not on, it indicates that the interface line group is faulty.
  4. If the voltage signal of a circuit is not detected (such as 20-pin or 24-pin connector) or the detected voltage exceeds the normal range, the buzzer will send out a warning sound of "di di" for a long time, and the corresponding voltage or PG value display status is flashing state, it means that the power supply is a fault source!
  5. Special reminder: The power supply tester is not supported Hot Plug

NOTE:

  1. The power tester has no battery and is completely powered by 20-pin or 24-pin interface, if there is no 20-pin or 24-pin interface powered, tester screen will not light up and the value cannot be read.
  2. The Product Screen Has Scratches?Because the LCD screen is easy to scratch, we put aprotective film on It, if you think It's not beautiful and useless, you can tear it off by yourself.
  3. The protective film of the screen fits very well and is not easy to tear off. Please operate carefully to avoid scratching the LCD screen.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this work for all types of power supply
Answer: If you're not familiar with power supply testing routines and do not have adequate electrical knowledge and troubleshooting experience please do not attempt any diagnostic outside the tester manufacturer's instructions. Safety first. There's no "thruput" mode on the tester. A DVM without a memory hold function connected to the suspect lead will be a better bet while the PC operates and the PS is under load.
Question: on mine pg is blinking what does that mean? thanks tom
Answer: You can test this way but it will only give an led light readout no lcd info on the power levels. Green ok red if there's a problem.
Question: The piece of cardboard says there is a user manual. However there is only the piece of green cardboard. Is that all there is? Any online sources
Answer: I have connected the PC power supply tester to test power supplies voltage outputs on a work bench. Using the tester for any other purpose, invalidates the test results.
Question: Does this tester provide any load?!? Testing voltage in an open (or near-open) circuit isn't all that useful
Answer: The MOBO 20/24 pin and the 4/8 pin need to be plugged in at the same time for power supply to activate.

User questions & answers

Question: Is there any volume control or alarm control over the sound? Can the alarm be turned off if you do not want an audible alarm
Answer: Most desktop type
Question: Is there any advantage with this over the basic PSU testers
Answer: I believe that means that is bad (or you don't have it puged in correctly). Everything should give you a solid number with little values changing. As long as you don't get a "DuDu Ring" or "DuDu Long Buzzer" everything is good. If you do a internet search, there are a couple of videos out there using this model tester.
Question: Can you leave this tester connected to a PSU for long periods of time? Most of the cheaper testers advise against this, I'm guessing because they may over heat
Answer: I bought this for my hubby and he tells me the green cardboard is all you get...I didn't see any other info online either, sorry. My hubby tested a power supply that he knew as good to see how it reacts/reports. Hope that helps, Jeanne
Question: Does this tester put a load on the PSU or does it solely display voltages
Answer: No. This tests the Power Supply Unit itself; it does not test any other computer component. To use this tester the power supply is disconnected from the computer components (Mother board, Hard drive, video card, floppy drive, DVD burner, etc.) and the PSU cables connected to the tester instead. When the PSU is switched on, the tester will read the current being supplied by the PSU to the various power cables (24 pin, P4, P6, P8). As you may know, improper current can wreak havoc with electronic systems. For example: This tester told me that the current being supplied by a PSU to one of its power cables was borderline minimum and fluctuating. A close examination of the PSU revealed that a couple of capacitors were swelling and barely beginning to split and leak. Hope this helps.

User questions & answers

Question: Do all pin connectors (24,4,6 etc) need to be plugged in? plugging in he 24pin only, gives double beep, then garbage on lcd, and non-stop short beeps
Answer: I've been able to answer my own question after receiving my this tester today. If you leave it connected it will power down the PSU and itself automatically after 10-20 seconds.
Question: Just bought the item. Seems good but there's no instructions or manual. Can you provide something
Answer: The manual states that the tester is powered by the PSU, however I would expect the load from this function to be trivial relative to load required to properly test the PSU. I am also interested in knowing whether or not this tester puts a substantial load on the PSU, and I could not find this information on the website.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work with a cooler master psu with the 18 and 10 pin that goes to 24 pin
Answer: Not necessarily, many ATX PSU's don't have -5v output. Check the PSU label to be sure.
Question: Can i use this to start a pwm pump for a water cooling loop
Answer: i had issues myself, trying to use it as a way to test the motherboard alone. instructions are quite hazy. i ended getting rid of the motherboard and power supply without being positive which was shot or whether it was just one module.
Question: I want to use this to power up two 3070s, is it safe? My psu has enough wattage
Answer: Just plug the large plug to large jack on the tester. use the key to connect your PS will have either 20 or 24 pin. once thats in the lights will light if the voltages are there. Most PS units no longer use -5v so that prob won't be lit. with the large connecter still attached plug the additional connectors one at a time in to check the voltages on them.
Question: what is this for
Answer: I would assume that it uses a standard beeper, a round, squat plastic cylinder with a small hole in the top that projects the sound. You would have to open up the unit, which would void your warranty, and place a small piece of tape over the hole, thus reducing the beep to a very low sound, but it would still be there.
