14 best fanless cpu coolers
Fanless CPU coolers are cooling solutions for computer processors (CPUs) that operate without traditional cooling fans. Instead of relying on fans to dissipate heat, these coolers use passive cooling methods to maintain a CPU's temperature within safe limits. Here are some key points about fanless CPU coolers:
Heat Dissipation: Fanless CPU coolers are designed to passively dissipate heat generated by the CPU. They do this through a combination of materials and design elements that promote efficient heat transfer and dissipation.
Heat Sinks: The primary component of a fanless CPU cooler is a large heat sink made of materials like aluminum or copper. This heat sink has a substantial surface area with many fins or ridges, which provides ample contact with the surrounding air to facilitate heat dissipation.
Silent Operation: One of the main advantages of fanless CPU coolers is their silent operation. Since there are no fans, there is no fan noise. This makes them ideal for users who prioritize a quiet computing environment.
No Moving Parts: Fanless coolers have no moving parts, which means they are less prone to mechanical failure and have a longer lifespan compared to traditional CPU coolers with fans.
Low Maintenance: Because there are no fans to accumulate dust and debris, fanless CPU coolers generally require less maintenance. However, periodic cleaning to remove dust from the heat sink is still advisable.
Lower TDP CPUs: Fanless CPU coolers are most suitable for CPUs with lower thermal design power (TDP) ratings. They may struggle to cool high-performance processors that generate a significant amount of heat under load.
Case Airflow: Effective use of a fanless CPU cooler depends on the overall airflow within the computer case. Adequate case ventilation is crucial to ensure that the heat generated by the CPU is efficiently carried away from the heat sink.
Installation: Installing a fanless CPU cooler can be more challenging than installing a traditional cooler with a fan. It may require careful consideration of case compatibility and proper thermal paste application.
Performance Trade-Off: While fanless CPU coolers are efficient for basic computing tasks and lower-power CPUs, they may not provide the same level of cooling performance as high-end air or liquid cooling solutions, especially for overclocked or high-TDP processors.
Compact Systems: Fanless CPU coolers are often used in compact or small form factor (SFF) PC builds where space for traditional cooling solutions is limited, and silence is a priority.
Fanless CPU coolers are a niche choice for users who value a quiet computing experience, have CPUs with lower TDPs, and have the necessary case airflow to support passive cooling. They are commonly found in HTPCs (home theater PCs) and other situations where noise reduction is a priority.

Low-profile tower design with 3U compatibility
While most low-profile coolers blow air towards the motherboard, the NH-D9L is a tower style cooler that blows parallel to the mainboard, which allows for superior airflow efficiency in cases with front intake and rear exhaust fans that create an airflow path parallel to the mainboard. The NH-D9L's reduced height of 110mm also allows it to fit 3U chassis. This makes it ideal for noise-sensitive 3U applications in fields such as audio or video processing.
100% RAM compatibility
With its 95x95mm footprint, the NH-D9L does not overhang the RAM slots on current Intel and most AMD mainboards. This gives the user full access to the memory modules and ensures 100% compatibility with tall heatspreaders or optional memory fans.

User questions & answers
Question: | The manufactor have told me that the base is made of aluminum but I see an answer that say that base is made of nothing than copper. Who is righ |
Answer: | Although there are only 4 SATA connectors on the board, you can easily put one 3.5" HDD and 3 2.5" SDDs in (you might have to Velcro one to the top of the heat sink enclosure (just going by my previous Shuttles, and I've had many). Also with the M.2 NVMe connector, you can put a amazingly fast 4TB drive right on the motherboard. I have two other computers in my office/music studio. Except for the limitation of the power supply (which doesn't mean anything for SSDs), there's not much that this little box can do that they don't (if you don't need to put in the top of the line video cards). So, if you aren't a gamer who needs the latest NVIDIA top of the line card, I can't believe that you could go wrong with this little box! |
Question: | will it cool an i7-8700T |
Answer: | Yes, all Shuttle cases come with the proprietary I.C.E. cooling system, it's a heat sink that sits on the CPU and a fan that blows out the back. I'm using i7 6700K and it works great. |
Question: | Is the base pure copper. i want to use cooler laboratory pro thermal paste but it reacts with aluminum |
Answer: | Hello, thank you for your question. Here is Shuttle's GPU compatibility list:http://global.shuttle.com/main/productsSupportList?productId=1925This unit does support PCI-E x16. However, we are not sure if the case would be large enough to house a GTX 980 or provide enough power for it. We recommend you contact Shuttle technical support directly for assistance with this. Best Regards, MITXPC |
Question: | I don't suppose this supports the Intel i7-4790K (TDP 88) processer |
Answer: | Yes, you can use multiple inference engine at the same time. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this fit in a mini itx case???? Does anyone recommend this over a water cooling?? How cool does it make your cpu w/out overclocking |
Answer: | This is designed to fit in small cases, like mITX. So yes, it will fit. I can't think of a case this won't fit. Now, you're talking about water cooling. Water cooling is going to cool FAR better than this cooler ever will. This cooler will always be a compromise and the only reason to use it would be because you don't have the space for a better one. As long as your processor uses under 65 watts it will be fine. So, the current i3 or i5. Iy you're using an i7, do NOT use this cooler. You'll have to check for an AMD. |
Question: | Will this fit in a mini-stx case such as the silverstone vt |
Answer: | There is no issue with the size of the cooler itself. Silverstone's VT02 is able to fit a cooler up to 46mm tall, and the NH-L9i stands at about 37mm. However, there could potentially be a compatibility issue with the motherboard as some of its components (capacitors, rear IO, etc.) could prevent the cooler from being installed properly. Some mini- and micro-STX boards are designed primarily with small circular coolers like Intel's stock solution in mind. Keep this in mind. |
Question: | Can I use liquid metal for this cooler |
Answer: | I wouldn't. Liquid Metal is for de-lidding and replaces the questionable TIM Intel uses between the CPU core and the lid, not between the lid and a heatsink. |
Question: | Does anyone know if this or the full sized one is quieter? I'm not going to overclock and all I want is a near silent computer |
Answer: | any cooler noctua makes is quiet - i had that cooler and it left me slightly under-whelmed, and i was thinking it'd be a much better cooler with 4 heatpipes, vs the two it comes with. About 2 weeks later they released the same cooler, slightly taller, with 4 heatpipes - i'd suggest going with that one, fwiw |
Product features
37mm low profile
Due to the slim 23mm heatsink and the NF-A9x14 low profile fan that measures only 14mm in thickness, the NH-L9 stands a mere 37mm tall, which makes it ideal for use in compact HTPCs or Small Form Factor cases that offer minimum clearance for CPU coolers.
100% RAM compatibility
The NH-L9i has a 95x95mm footprint that complies exactly with the Intel LGA115x socket keep-out zone. This means that it won't cause issues with chipset coolers and doesn't overhang the RAM slots, so it's fully compatible with tall memory modules.
100% compatibility with PCIe cards on mini-ITX
Most Intel LGA115x based mini-ITX motherboards have the PCIe slot sitting right next to the 95x95mm socket zone. While larger coolers that exceed this zone are likely to block the PCIe slot, the 95x95xmm sized NH-L9i provides full compatibility with PCIe cards.
NF-A9x14 PWM premium fan
The highly optimised NF-A9x14 premium fan features Noctua's proprietary AAO frame as well as sophisticated aerodynamic design measures. Supporting PWM for fully automatic speed control, the NF-A9x14 allows the NH-L9i to stay remarkably quiet.

Question: | Does the software collect information from my computer and send it over the internet |
Answer: | You find the specs of the case at coolermaster.com |
Question: | will this cooler fit inside a nzxt 710 mid tower |
Answer: | You would need to get a Universal Vertical GPU kit in order to do that in this case. It does not in it's stock form. CM-PNguyen |
Question: | Does the newest z73 version come with an am4 bracket? the description isn’t clear with which bracket is not included |
Answer: | My lights took a bit to figure out. You need to plug the fan and light stuff into that board on the right side (when facing front of case) inside the door. Then give that thing power from your PSU. Then I think you hook up the wire FROM that board into your motherboard. I had it working perfect for a while, but at some point my lights came on and stuck that way. I will fix it eventually, but I have a feeling the lights on this thing are kind of hit or miss. I personally don’t like the lights so I don’t really care much. Oh and there is a button on the top front on the right side that controls the lights. It’s actually an up/down dual button thing. If you hold it for like less than 10 seconds it should toggle it on or off. The up/down toggles through built in modes/colors. I think the top most option is what allows your motherboard to actually control it, but it may be the bottom most, not 100% sure. Check the cooler master pdf of the instructions to see a picture of how that board should work. Do the same for your motherboard to see where to connect the fans and lights. Good luck. |
Question: | is thermal paste included |
Answer: | I didn't really have an issue. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How does the performance of this setup compare to say the h80i liquid cooling system or comparable ones |
Answer: | I know this question is old, but I have had the h80i for two years on two rigs and I moved one over to this cooler, and now I’m buying another one of these to replace the other h80i. Temperature differences? The h80i did fine for a while, but it’s gotten slowly louder and hotter over time...liquid may be drying up. Meanwhile the noctua is quieter than the h80i EVER was, and keeps the cpu (a 4970) cool enough that it’s always running at boost clock speed. I don’t overclock, I just want my computer quiet and running fairly cool. These do the trick, and they’re far easier to assemble than the Corsair water blocks. I have a third machine that I started out with this cooler on, and it’s worked like a champ for YEARS. I’m a bit mad at myself for ever going the water cooling route. |
Question: | I have a spare Noctua fan, could i mount it on the other side of the radiator for more efficient cooling? I have the ASUS Maximus Formula VI |
Answer: | Who has such an expensive fan as a spare? Anyway, of course you could use it. There is an extra bracket provided for this exact application, along with some thicker anti-vibration rubber pads. I personally would mount the second fan in the exact same orientation as the first fan so that it still pulls air from the right side of your case and pushes it out the left side. I don't like air-flow working against each other. I create kind of like a wind tunnel in my case.By adding this second fan to just aid in helping to 'pull' the air through being pushed though by the first noctua nf-f12 fan, you could set both fans to about 900 rpm. Not that there isn't efficient cooling already in my case with just the one fan at 900 rpm. What model is that extra fan you have, is it another nf-f12 or nf-s12a? I would mount a nf-s12a as a second fan since the nf-f12 is optimized to push air through restrictive areas, i.e. the cpu heat sink and then I wouldn't use the thicker rubber spacers provided in the box with the NH-U12S cooler, but I would use the thinner rubber spacers already on your additional noctua fan.I am not sure why noctua provides thicker rubber pads for the second optional fan, maybe it's because they think you will use another nf-f12 pressure optimized fan and it needs that little bit more breathing space since it is more designed as a 'pushing' air type fan rather than pulling, I don't know. I would still prefer the nf-s12a as a second fan. I read reviews where a second fan on this cooler only managed to give 1-2 degrees C better temps...run a benchmark with one and then two fans, keep your eyes on your temps and if you only see a small improvement like this, I don't think I would waste such a good fan for that 1 or 2 better temps. Rather mount it as an intake fan then. Hope I could help. |
Question: | Does this come with thermal paste? If so, is it applied already onto the heatsink, or does it come into a tube |
Answer: | The heatsink or cpu cooler come with high quality thermal paste plus mounting for LGA 2011 and 1150. However, you need to apply the paste on top of the cpu. There are many videos on YouTube that shows you the proper way of putting it if you want to know how exactly it is applied on top of the CPU. To answer you question, it comes in a tube of about 50 ml if I am not mistken. |
Question: | So if I want a Noctua cooler in something than this hideous brown, I have to buy black fans separately |
Answer: | exactly! |
Product features
Classic 120mm tower size for excellent overall compatibility
Standing 158mm tall, the NH-U12S is short enough to fit most modern mid- or high-end tower cases. Measuring 125mm wide (including fan and fan clips), the cooler stays clear of the top PCIe slot on standard ATX or Micro-ATX motherboards, ensuring best compatibility with SLI and CrossFire setups.

Product features
A-RGB for Full Color Control
The 13 A-RGB LEDs installed in the Freezer 50 are autonomously controllable. The Freezer 50 is compatible with the common A-RGB standards of leading motherboard manufacturers for the simplest possible use. It can therefore be fully illuminated directly via the A-RGB mainboard connection or via an external controller and synchronized with the lighting of other hardware.
Dual Tower Design and 6 Heatpipes
The massive, asymmetrical twin-tower CPU cooler offers more cooling surface and, together with its six U-shaped Direct-Touch Heatpipes, ensures better heat distribution and faster heat dissipation. This enables the highest possible cooling performance and makes the one of the strongest air cooler ARCTIC ever made.
Ideal airflow
The Freezer 50 features two P-fans working in push-pull-configuration. Combining a 120 mm and a 140 mm fan leads to an increase in airflow for improved cooling, while keeping the noise level and the installation height down.
RAM Clearance
Since the Freezer 50 is built for maximum performance, including a massive heatsink, it does not have limitless RAM Clearance. Recommended is a maximum memory module height of 37.5 mm. This stipulation is mainly due to the tip on the underside of the Freezer 50, which means modules that exceed this height could still be compatible if they have V-shaped or centrally recessed heatsinks.
