13 best 120mm pwm fans

A 120mm PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) fan is a popular choice for cooling in computer systems. Let's break down some key aspects related to these fans:

  1. Size: The "120mm" refers to the diameter of the fan. These fans are 120 millimeters across and are commonly used as case fans or for cooling various internal components of a computer.

  2. PWM Control: PWM is a method for controlling the speed of the fan. A PWM fan can adjust its speed based on the PWM signal it receives from the motherboard or a dedicated fan controller. This allows for dynamic fan speed adjustments based on the system's temperature, optimizing cooling performance.

  3. Airflow and Static Pressure: 120mm PWM fans come in various designs optimized for either high airflow or high static pressure. High airflow fans are suitable for general case cooling, while high static pressure fans are ideal for cooling components like radiators or heatsinks.

  4. Noise Level: Manufacturers often provide information about the noise level of their fans, typically measured in decibels (dB). Lower noise levels are desirable for users who prioritize a quieter computing experience.

  5. Bearings and Longevity: Fans may use different types of bearings, such as sleeve bearings, ball bearings, or fluid dynamic bearings. These impact the fan's lifespan and noise levels. Fans with longer lifespans are usually preferred for sustained use.

  6. Connector Type: 120mm PWM fans typically come with a 4-pin connector. The fourth pin is dedicated to PWM control, allowing for precise speed regulation. Some older fans may have 3-pin connectors, lacking PWM functionality.

  7. RGB and Aesthetics: Many 120mm PWM fans come with RGB (Red, Green, Blue) lighting options, allowing users to customize the appearance of their system. These fans can contribute to the overall aesthetics of the computer build.

  8. Installation: Installing a 120mm PWM fan is usually straightforward. They are designed to fit standard mounting points in computer cases.Ensure compatibility with your case and consider cable management for a tidy setup.

In summary, 120mm PWM fans are versatile components commonly used for cooling in computer systems. Their size, PWM control, and various design options make them suitable for a range of applications, from general case cooling to specialized cooling of components like CPUs and GPUs.

Optimised for Static Pressure

During the development of P12 PWM PST, special emphasis was placed on a focused airstream and thus a high static pressure. The fan ensures extremely efficient cooling, even with increased air resistance. Therefore, the P12 PWM PST is particularly suitable for use on heatsinks and radiators.

More Efficient Technology

The motor is powered by a Magnet ring, which allows the P12 PWM PST to run much more efficiently than its predecessors. This saves energy and lowers the coil temperature without comprimising the performance.

200 to 1800 RPM regulated via PWM

Thanks to the 4-pin connector, the RPM can be regulated in a broad spectrum via PWM. In this way, noise is kept at a minimum while maximum cooling performance is guaranteed when needed.

High Quality Bearing

Thanks to a special technology developed in Germany, friction within the bearing is reduced and greater efficiency is achieved. As a result, there is less heat development as well as less bearing noise, which means you can enjoy a longer service life from your fan.

User questions & answers

Question: Does these have PWM
Answer: No, please consider F12 PWM Rev.2 or F12 PWM PST. -Justin@ARCTIC
Question: Is it 4 pin or 3 pin? The earlier answer seems to be guessing. 3 pin is PWM, and 4-pin is both PWM and measured RPM (tachometer pulses) as feedback
Answer: there are different versions of each type of fan (P or F series) and the different sizes. 3 pin (usually) means voltage control, 4 pin (most of the time) runs in pwm mode. no difference in operating (one better than the other), as long as the board/fan controller recognizes the fan properly, and 3 pins transfer rpm as well. but fan rpm controlled by voltage seems to be a bit smoother at the lower end (~500 rmpand lower), versus the pwm one. then again, the "normal" F/P fans with pwm (0.3 sone) usually allow for lower minimum rpm (down to ~200) versus the silent type about ~350 (0.08 sone)
Question: What is the difference between Rev. 2 and Rev. 1 - I can't find the differences on their site. Thank you
Answer: Hi,The Rev 1 is now the PWM PST fan and comes with a PST adapter to add more fans to the same PWM Signal. The Rev 2 is the same fan but without the PST adapter. Best regards,Jens
Question: Static Pressure? can't seem to fine it any where online
Answer: Air Flow: 74 CFM / 126 m³/h (@ 1,350 RPM)Noise Level: 0.3 Sone (@ 1,350 RPM)This is from URL: http://www.arctic.ac/us_en/arctic-f12-pwm-pst.htmlThe included manual / instructions say noting but "high static pressure"

Product features

Highly optimised P/Q curve for all applications

The NF-A12x25’s sophisticated aerodynamic design allows for a pressure to airflow (P/Q) curve that is extremely strong in the critical mid-section. This means that the NF-A12x25 is a true jack-of-all-trades with excellent performance in both static pressure demanding and airflow demanding applications.

Next-generation performance

Noctua’s 120mm fans such as the NF-F12 and NF-S12A are renowned as being among the best on the market and have received more than 400 awards and recommendations from the international press. With its further improved efficiency and novel, state-of-the-art engineering, the NF-A12x25 represents another step up in performance and manufacturing.

Ultra-tight tip clearance

The NF-A12x25 has a record tight tip clearance (distance between the blade tips and the inside of the frame) of only 0.5mm. This highly ambitious design sets a new benchmark for 120mm fans and helps the NF-A12x25 to work more efficiently against back pressure, such as on heatsinks or radiators, by reducing leak flows through the gap between impeller and frame.

Metal-reinforced motor hub

The centrepiece of the NF-A12x25’s motor hub is made entirely from steel and the axle mount is reinforced with an additional brass structure. In combination, both measures ensure ultimate precision and increased stability in the critical hub area.

User questions & answers

Question: The title says 3000 RPM, but the description says 2000 rpm. Which is it
Answer: It's 3000 RPM but can be adjusted to 2000 with software.
Question: What's the difference between 3000 RPM and 2000 RPM? and which one is better
Answer: More speed means more air. More air, more cooling and more noise. If you have a top grade fan controller it should be able to run these fans right down to the stall speed which is 750 RPM for the 3000RPM and 450 for the 2000RPM version. So if you want ultra-quiet then the 2000RPM is going to be better, otherwise the 3000RPM. I just bought a 3000RPM to test against the consumer 1500RPM. The only thing I would really knock the consumer fans for is the colors. I would have bought four of the consumer version straight off if they weren't vomit colored.
Question: How many CFM's does this fan push
Answer: The fan was designed is Austria ( I doubt it was made there); so the specs are 186.7 cubic meters per hour which is 109.9 CFM.
Question: this model is 120 mm
Answer: The nf-f12 is 120 mm, nf-a14 is 140 mm

User questions & answers

Question: How are the mounting holes on the 200mm fans laid out? will they fit in cases with one screw per corner
Answer: Yes.
Question: Me gustaría saver si trae el juego de cables para conectarlos todos a una sola coneccion de corriente y rgb
Answer: I am not sure. But they do have an awful odor.
Question: Please clarify each fan cable distinctly; are the digital argb cables 3-pin and are the pwm power cables 4-pin
Answer: Yes, the countries are labelled, but the lettering is very tiny. A magnifying glass might be fun for kids to use. I use this more for continent location and location of countries relative to each other on the continent. The kids enjoy them because they are squishy. I love them because they don't make noise if dropped and don't usually roll to far away.
Question: I know it is certified for "asus aura, msi" but can it work with gigabyte rgb fusion
Answer: According to my experience, First, I need to know what is your printer's brand and model to make sure if it supports wireless connections. If it does, you don't need any hub and wired cable. If not, the Ethernet port on your printer should be only for your router, but not any other device like PC/laptop... not suggest you get your printer connected via this hub. This hub can only be used as an extension device of a PC/laptop/tablet/smartphone...etc, but not of a printer.

User questions & answers

Question: What all exactly is included in this item
Answer: http://noctua.at/en/products/product-line-chromax/nf-f12-pwm-chromax-black-swap/specification
Question: Is the fan reversable to become an intake or exhaust fan as neeeded
Answer: All fans are reversible, based on how your mount them in the case. Fan facing the case it’s an intake, fan facing the inside, it’s an exhaust.
Question: Can I use 1 to 2 of these nf-f12 chromax black fans in place of the tan/brown fan that comes with the noctua nh-u12s cpu cooler
Answer: You absolutely can, it’s what I have on mine. There’s no performance difference, it was simply to keep my color scheme matching. The original tan one went into a different case that doesn’t have a window.
Question: are these good for radiators
Answer: Yes, they have higher static pressure, which is what you want to push air through something that provides resistance (e.g., radiator fins).

Award-winning NF-F12 design

Having received more than 150 awards and recommendations from the international press, Noctua's NF-F12 has become a proven premium choice for 120mm cooling needs. Its renowned efficiency has convinced tens of thousands of customers all over the world.

Swappable anti-vibration pads in 6 colours

The NF-F12 PWM chromax.black.swap comes with 4 black, white, red, blue, green and yellow NA-AVP1 anti-vibration pads respectively. By combining the various colours with black or leaving off the pads on one side, the fan can be coordinated with most popular build colour schemes out of the box. Additional NA-SAVP1 sets for outfitting both sides in one colour can be purchased separately.

SSO2 bearing

The chromax line fans feature the further optimised second generation of Noctua’s renowned, time-tested SSO bearing. With SSO2, the rear magnet is placed closer to the axis to provide even better stabilisation, precision and durability.

Varying Angular Distance and Vortex Control Notches

The NF-F12's stator guide vanes are set out in Varying Angular Distance and feature Vortex-Control Notches. Both measures help to spread the noise emission over a broader frequency spectrum and thus make the fan's sound pattern more agreeable to the human ear.

Focused Flow frame

Designed for pressure demanding applications such as heatsinks and radiators, the Focused Flow frame features eleven stator guide vanes that straighten, channel and focus the airflow, which allows the NF-F12 to rival the performance of conventional fans running at much faster speeds.

User questions & answers

Question: can I connect the just the fan to the montherboard not though the controller
Answer: We used these as party favors. So not really sure about long term wear. But, the print is more of a plastic lining type picture, it crunches a bit when you squeeze them, not soft...if that helps any...

User questions & answers

Question: Do these lights come with a controller for the rgb ? And how do i control the fan speeds? Also i need to hook up 9 of these fans, is that possible
Answer: Late answer, sorry. BQ-DRP4 has two fans of different size (120mm and 135mm). None of those fans is 140mm, like this BL090 and that means either a lot of ghetto-rigging or no luck at all. Additionally, the speed of this one (900rpm) is not enough for proper cooling of an OC'd CPU and I am not even sure if it would work for a non-OC'd.
Question: How long does it take for delivery for free shipping
Answer: 900
Question: I've installed the fans and downloaded mystic light, but it only allows changing of the effect not the color, any help
Answer: Only if you have a full size tower case you will need extensions
Question: Will this work for gigabyte b450m ds3h seeing how it only has one fan header and one led header
Answer: 49.8 cfm
