Sabrent 4-Port USB 3.0 Hub with Individual LED Lit Power Switches, Includes 5V/2.5A Power Adapter (HB-UMP3)

SABRENT

Based on 6 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Add up to 4 devices quickly and easily with the Sabrent 4-Port USB 3.0 Hub. The thin, lightweight design makes this hub a great travel companion to expand one USB 3.0 port into four. Especially great for notebooks which come with only a few ports in an era when you need to attach many USB devices at once, such as a printer, card reader, cell phone, iPod, thumb drive, mouse, keyboard, or an external hard drive. Fully backwards compatible with the USB 2.0/1.1 products. Plus, each port has its own separate power switch so you can control each port independently.

Expand your high speed USB 3.0 ports

Technology seems to advance at ever increasing speeds. With the recent release of Super-Speed USB 3.0, you can now transfer data at up to 10 times the speeds of the older USB 2.0 standards! Speeds of 5Gbps are a vast improvement over USB 2.0 that only supports up to 480Mbps. The Sabrent USB 3.0 Hub is a great tool to expand a single USB 3.0 port into 4 ports, so now you can connect all of your USB devices at one time. Plus, its small and elegant design has been configured to be as thin as possible so as to not take up precious space as you travel. Yet, it is still backward compatible with your older devices, so you can still use it in conjunction with USB 2.0 devices.

System Requirements:

* Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7/8/8.1/10

* Mac OS X

Please Note:

2.4Ghz wireless devices, such as wireless keyboard and mouse adapters, may not work in close proximity to USB 3.0 devices or hubs. Connecting to a USB 2.0 port is recommended.

For a stable connection, the devices connected to the 4-Port USB 3.0 Hub must not exceed a combined current of 5 volts 900 mAh.

This 4-Port USB 3.0 Hub will not charge an iPad (it will only sync).

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use the power supply one, without the power supply if you wanted to
Answer: Yes the USB hub will work fine without the AC power adapter. You will need the AC adapter if you want to charge more power-intensive accessories like iPads, etc. that require higher current or if you want to charge 4 devices at one time.
Question: How long is USB3 cable
Answer: measured mine at about 1 meter. I really like this thing. The two red high-power only ports are oriented 180 degrees from the USB 3.0 ports so you physically can't mix them up either.
Question: How many ports can I have active at one time, without overloading the single port of the computer
Answer: You can use all 4. However, If you need to utilize the speed of 3.0 x4 you will need that kind of throughput on the port you attach it to and this device as well (not sure of max throughput). Most USB devices don't need that kind of speed (such as web cam, keyboards, mice) For instance, if you hook up 3 external SSD drives and VR headset, you will potentially bottleneck on speed. The devices will still function, just not at 100% speed.
Question: what's the different between the one with the external power adapter and the one without
Answer: With my USB 3 Ports on my Acer TC-780 front panel ports, I can power all four ports with thumb drives. When I tried the same with a Dell U473D Slim Multimedia Keyboard with 2 USB Port I had to use the pawer supply that came with the HB-UMP3 4-port Powered USB hub. I would advise getting the powered hub because you don't know if your USB port will support enough devices without the power supply unit.

User questions & answers

Question: USB Hard Drives with their own PS adapters... Can I access all of them at same time? Drives C-I
Answer: I have 2 Sabrent Ports with, right now, 7 drives attached. I have no problems getting to any of them. I'm not certain if "at the same time" means to access each in sequence or to access each concurrently. I ran a test and did an Explorer search for *.* while I then went to access each of my other drives, including the 2 internal drives in my laptop. I had no problems but need to disclose the fact that my development laptop has 16GB memory so that very probably affects things.
Question: What is the maximum amp output
Answer: Each port will only provide 5 volts 300 Milliamps
Question: length of the usb cord
Answer: Not very long....about a foot
Question: Does this have holes on the back so I can mount it on a wall
Answer: let me qualify that just a bit, I have the 7-port, it has mounting holes, which I am in fact using. I'd be surprised if the 13-port didn't have them.

User questions & answers

Question: I have 2 external hard drives: 1 is 500 GB, 1 is 2 TB. Both have their own power cords. Will they work with this hub
Answer: yes they will, I have a 3 tb WD, a 2 tb Fatom, and a 1tb HP they all work fine, and and any thumb drive that I plug in syncs right up.Some of the thumb drives are usb 2.0 , no problem
Question: What is the recommended ac adapter to use with this
Answer: JTJ said he didn't have a power jack. Either there is more than one version or he has one but didn't find it. It would be easy to miss. It's next to the USB cable. For basic devices, like a mouse, keyboard, etc, you do not need a power supply. The computer will power them, but the current the computer will supply is limited. If you plan to charge a smart phone, tablet, or something like that you should make the adapter part of your plans.(http://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-100V-240V-Adapter-Support-PS-5V4A/dp/B00MRGKPH8 )
Question: If I plug this into a 2.0 USB port on my CPU, will I still get the benefit of Sabrent's 3.0 speed? Or is it about time I update my motherboard? Thanks
Answer: @T. Freese: No. The nature of USB is that devices can not communicate among themselves. All communication goes through the host computer. So a pair of 3.0 devices sharing a hub attached to a 2.0 computer will communicate at 2.0 speeds.
Question: Does the fact that each has a switch mean that you can just turn each of them off without doing "safely remove" or "eject" devices
Answer: The reason that you use the Windows Option to safely remove the drive is so that windows has a chance to close any File Pointer that is in use. If this is not done, then there is a chance that the file(s) will be locked and/or corrupted the next time the drive is accessed.So. It is recommended that you safely remove the drive before you hit that power switch on the hub.I have this hub and use it to access 1 4TB drive, 2 5TB drives and 1 8TB drive. That is a LOT of data to loose just because I got lazy. The one reason to have switches on a hub is so that you can have the drives OFF when not in use. This will save some life on the hard drive.Lance

User questions & answers

Question: Does it have a built in power connection? Looks like it does, just doesn't come with power adapter plug
Answer: This is not powered at all... there is no power connection and it will not charge any device plugged into it. It is strictly for data.
Question: CAn you use this on a windows PC
Answer: I don't see why not. It's a standard USB 3.0 device (backwards compatible to USB 2)
Question: answer says cable disconnects; 1 says it does not. if it does, what kind of plug does it accept? mini-usb? proprietary
Answer: Usb 3.0 on the far computer end. Mini usb (Samsung note 3 and up, tablets, etc) on the end which plugs in to the unit.
Question: does it interfere with the apple bluetooth keyboard and mouse connectivity
Answer: Yes, this can interfere with the bluetooth keyboard and mouse connectivity. If the hub is to close to the laptop, Mini Mac etc. it will cause interference with bluetooth connectivity. If this happens move the hub farther away from the computer and the interference will be eliminated. I can verify this as I am using a Mini Mac for a media server and when I hooked up the hub it was within 5 inches of the Mini Mac and I had all sorts of issues with the bluetooth keyboard and mouse once I move the hub past about 18 inches from the Mini Mac all was well.

User questions & answers

Question: What's the performance when. let's say, 4 pendrives are connected in? Do you experience any troubles moving data between them or to the computer
Answer: As a result of some files transferring test, I think this item has not trouble some. However, I found one of trouble on USB memory stick. Here I show you my test result. I use Mac mini 2012 late model with MT Lion, Kingston USB 2.0 Memory Stick 16GB, 1TB Micronet Fantom Drive (HDD) and Sabrent 4-port USB 2.0 Hub.Transfer Speed Test result (4 files total 5.19GB): 1. Direct USB port connection (HDD)--32.44mb/s. 2. Use USB Hub (HDD)--34.83mb/s. 3. Direct USB port connection (Memory stick)--3.74mb/s. 4. Use USB Hub (Memory stick--3.65mb/s. In my conclusion, USB stick is much much slower than HDD. Sabrent 4-port USB 2.0 Hub has not trouble some. USB memory stick has a trouble to transfer a large size file. I need more test, but I found a large size file can not copy into the memory stick with error message "...can't be copied because it is too large for..." or "...can't copy because there is not enough space to copy...". However, when I got this message, it was empty on memory stick. I could copy 1gb, 2gb, 4.21gb files but cannot copy 8.75gb and 15.04gb files. I need to find out from the what size cannot copy.
Question: can i connect this device to a wall plug and charge my iPhone/apple products or does it have to be connected to a computer to charge my apple products
Answer: This is a UN-powered USB hub and is intended for devices which do not draw more than minute amounts of power from the USB port such as printers, thumbdrives, memory card readers. USB 2.0 specs state the maximum power to be drawn off a USB port is 500mA (0.5 Amps). A typical smartphone charger provides twice as much power -- 1000mA (1.0 Amp). Tablet chargers provide even more -- 1.8A to 2.1A.If you want to charge a phone, tablet, portable battery pack, or power a USB-powered device, you need to get a POWERED USB hub. The easiest way to identify one is that it comes with an AC power adapter which must be plugged-into the USB hub.
Question: How long is the connection cable? Does it require AC adapter
Answer: Maybe they have changed this device recently but the cable on my hub is 10" long. The power is supplied by the source USB to which the hub is connected. You will only get out what you put in. As such it will not charge power hungry devices like an iPad when connected to a computer but will when connected to a wall charger.
Question: If I plug this into the front of my computer and let it dangle will it fall out
Answer: I don't think it will fall out. I have mine plugged into the back of my computer, it just hangs there, seems pretty secure. I've also used it on my Xbox to connect 4 controllers and it didn't fall out.

User questions & answers

Question: can this work for usb
Answer: Yes. That's actually in the description of the product. "... 3.0/2.0/1.1..."
Question: Will this work with an external Iomega zip 100 drive that has parallel port
Answer: No
Question: After connecting the converter, i have access to all the old program files, but no data files. not even the folders for data. any ideas
Answer: Were your files on a separate partition or drive letter on the drive? You will only see the primary partition. If your data folders were part of your C drive or primary partition, then I can't say why. Possibly use a file recovery/restoration program like GetDataBack. That's an old one I used to use, there are newer ones now (possibly free ones, not sure) that may show the other partitions if you had any like that.
Question: Is this better than: www.amazon.com/startech-com-sata-drive-adapter-cable/dp/b00d76j1ko/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=utf8&qid=1532781036&sr=8-1-spons&keyw
Answer: The startech gets its power to work from the usb, the sabrent has a power adapter that plus in to power the hard drive up. I think that the external power helps it work. I've tried this one with 2.5 sata and older 3.5 ide. Worked great.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it safe to use this for media files and run
Answer: Absolutely. I have had mine connected to my PC for 2 months 24/7, and it runs just like an internal Sata HDD. Have a good one!
Question: Will this product support a 6TB
Answer: My 6TB Seagate hard drive didn't work for this product. On Amazon website said 3TB desktop, it might be up to 3TB.
Question: Is the power supply universal (110-240V
Answer: 12v ps. Provided...do not use 12v supply with 5v drives. Some drives are ranged 5v to 12v . Some just say 5v.
Question: I have a 1TB internal hard drive which I want to convert to external for backup storage. Is this a viable solution
Answer: Depends on the HDD or SSD you are using and how you intend to use it. This drive is really made for fast-access to a variety of different drives for shorter periods. The interface is high-speed, but the case does NOT seal out dust, it does not give any sort of shock/impact damage protection, and not having any sort of cooling, it can get very hot with high speed HDDs. I have a 10k RPM WD Raptor from quite a few years back that I wanted to pull music off of. Over about an hour of usage, it got quite hot. While perfectly fine for intermittent usage, this is not ideal for frequent or prolonged usage given heat is a major catalyst of premature hard drive failure. So with higher RPM HDDs, this is not as good a choice for constant usage as a dedicated enclosure with some shock protection and a cooling fan/heat sinks. With a SSD, this is obviously not of concern. So if your 1tb is a HDD and you want to have it running constantly for backups, an external with a fan and shock protection would be a better match, IMO. Depending on the age of your drive though, it may be worth considering buying a new drive outright given you can get enterprise grade drives like the WD RE4's in that size for under $70 and SSDs have even gotten very affordable. While predicting when a specific drive fails is very difficult to do, standard consumer-grade HDDs tend to have failure rates increase at the 3-4 year mark and really spike at the 4-5 year mark (Google's study on this is the most detailed I know of to date.) An enterprise drive would give you a more reliable backup system with a longer reliable service life, and usually read/write speeds that are 2-3 times faster than standard internal HDDs (of which you would need to use USB3 or ThunderBolt to take full advantage of.)Sorry for the long response.

User questions & answers

Question: Only works on my laptop, will not work on a usb from my cigarette lighter adapter. what's up
Answer: Ot is not a power hub. I used mine on my laptop only for connecting devices. It atopped working in 6 weeks. No reply from company when i complained
Question: So you can use this as a regular usb port, such as plugging my mouse / keyboard in it
Answer: Yeah, that's what I use it for anyways. Since I only have 2 USB ports on my laptop, all my ports are used up most of the time so this makes it easier.
Question: Will this charge 4 Iphones at same time
Answer: It says in the description "For a stable connection, the devices connected to the 4 Port Hub must not exceed a combined current of 5 volts 500mAh. External hard-drives should be connected to an external power source. This 4 Port hub will not charge your devices. (it will only sync)." your phone might accept 500mAh but it's about 25% (slower actually) of what your phone wants / needs, especially if it's a newish phone =P
Question: I'm using this in my car. Will this draw power when the car is off? I saw the blue light still on even though the car is off... will my battery die
Answer: If your outlet is live, even when the isn't operating, it will draw power. Will it be enough to drain your battery? Try it and see. Unless your battery is nearly done, or you're powering something that has a high draw, I would say no, but that's no guarantee.
