    User questions & answers

Question: Can the TS-328 ram be upgraded
Answer: I do not believe any of the lower-end QNAP NAS models can be upgraded. I have the TS-431 and it cannot be upgraded. The only way to increase memory on these models is to order the model with more memory.
Question: Can i use raid 5 hard disk and the other bays is just ordinary harddisk
Answer: The quick answer is yes, you can use any 3.5" SATA 6GB/s drives (or 2.5" SATA drives, even 2.5" SATA SSD, with proper tray adapter) for this QNAP TS-328 NAS to function. But the durability and performance of any hard drive will depend on the specs of that hard drive itself- e.g., designed for desktop (usually considered as "ordinary"), server, NAS, etc). Just to clarify the definition of "RAID 5 hard disk"- I think you meant hard drives specifically designed to used inside a NAS (RAID). While you can use any "ordinary" 3.5" SATA hard drive (or 2.5" with tray adapter), how long it will last and how fast it can perform will be different than a hard drive designed to be used in a NAS. There is no single "RAID 5 hard disk" as an individual hard drive type per se. On the other hand, "RAID 5" is a specific RAID level configuration that uses block-level data striping and distributes parity to all the disks. A group of hard drives installed in a NAS (RAID) can support various RAID configurations if that NAS offers those configuration options (e.g., RAID 1,0, RAID 5, RAID 6 etc). In the case of the QNAP T-328, it is designed to support RAID 5. Hope this helps.
    Question: How many disk included
Answer: No disks includes with this.
Question: Can hard drives be upgraded? let’s say i start with 3x1tb drives then i replace the 1tb drives to 4tb ones
Answer: Hi D.L., Yes, drives can be upgraded. You can reference the following to see how this works. https://www.qnap.com/en/how-to/tutorial/article/online-raid-capacity-upgrade/ Thanks!

    User questions & answers

Question: Does anybody know if lightroom catalogs are running on such a thunderbolt 3 nas
Answer: I have my catalog files and previews local, and my image files on the NAS. Works just fine.
Question: I have two monitors connected via the usb-c ports on my imac. how can i best directly attach this and still use 2 screens
Answer: First screen: connect screen to the iMac's first TB3 port. Second screen: connect the Qnap to the iMac via the TB3 ports on both devices, then connect the second screen to the Qnap's second Tb3 port. The screens can be up to 5K resolution ones, on the latest iMac and iMac Pro computers.
Question: Can you run it over the network and via thunderbolt at the same time, so that when you disconnect thunderbolt it keeps running over the network
Answer: Hi Jeff & Michele, You can have it connected to your network while simultaneously having Thunderbolt connections. Thanks!
Question: When you connect it via thunderbolt does it mount as a shared drive or does it have a letter like D:\
Answer: The Thunderbolt connections operate with the Thunderbolt Networking technology. This means you're using a network connection, and the connection behaves in the same fashion. Thus, you need to configure the network interfaces on both ends (the NAS and the connected computer) to speak on the same network subnet. While this is a 20 Gbps (bi-directional) Thunderbolt 3 connection, you are limited by the speed of the drives on the NAS as well as the operating system of the connected device. That said, I can actively work with the content on the NAS as if it were a connected external drive (rather than a network connection) because of the throughput. It sounds complicated, but, once you set it up, it's done. QNAP has plenty of documentation to take you through the setup process step-by-step.

    User questions & answers

Question: Does the device restore it's power state, after a power outage? (Power back on
    Answer: Yes, configurable.
Question: Will it reboot after power loss or does the power button need to be manually pushed
Answer: There are three options selectable in the Control Panel->System Settings->Power: O Resume the server to the previous power-on or power-off status. O Turn on the server automatically. O The server should remain off. There are many options and I recommend downloading the Software Manual and Hardware Manual from the manufacturer site.
Question: Can I run this with only 2 drives and add 2 more drives (of the same or different size) later when I'm ready to expand
Answer: Yes but it depends on how you want to add those 2 drives. Add them and create a separate raid array? Yes. But if you want to expand the initial RAID Array then no. Of course you don't have to setup raid at all but that is kinda the point of this device is to have that redundancy of raid.
Question: What model ram can I buy to upgrade this to 8gb

Question: Can I backup Time Machine on Mac OS X Yosemite using wireless, remote access and USB 3.0 depending on where my computer is located at any given time
Answer: using afp and myqnapcloud ddns and upnp port forwarding you should be able to connect to your NAS from anywhere and do a time machine backup
Question: Can i upgrade ram by inserting a 8gb of ram in the primary slot, and leave the secondary slot blank
Answer: Be careful. I installed 8gb. In order to get to the second memory slot (I had 2x4gb) you need to remove a screw with a piece of paper on top that clearly says warranty void if removed. I found it to be really annoying since to install 4gb (in one dimm) you don't need to break the warranty (that piece of paper). Also the whole thing has the screws marked with a red marker to know if you moved a screw.
