Radios operating on VHF (Very High Frequency) are commonly used in various fields, including marine two-way radios, marine electronics, car and vehicle electronics, and general electronics. Here's some information about radios operating on VHF:
Marine Two Way Radios: VHF radios are widely used in the maritime industry, both for professional and recreational purposes. Marine two-way radios operating on VHF frequencies are crucial for communication between boats, ships, and coastal stations. They are used for safety, navigation, and general communication on the water.
Marine Electronics: VHF radios are often integrated into larger marine electronics systems. They are equipped with features such as weather channels, emergency alert functions, and GPS capabilities to enhance safety and navigation for boaters and sailors.
Car and Vehicle Electronics: In some cases, VHF radios are used in vehicles, especially in certain professions like long-haul trucking or off-road adventures. They can be used for communication between vehicles or with base stations, ensuring that drivers can stay in touch, especially in remote areas.
Electronics: VHF radios are also used in various other applications outside of marine and vehicular contexts. For example, they are used in aviation for air traffic control communication. In the electronics field, they may be used for specific communication needs where VHF frequencies are suitable.
Frequency Range: VHF radios typically operate within the frequency range of 30 MHz to 300 MHz. This range allows for line-of-sight communication over relatively long distances, making VHF radios ideal for open water communication and other scenarios where uninterrupted communication is essential.
Licensing: In many countries, operating VHF radios, especially in marine and aviation contexts, requires licensing. Users must adhere to regulations and use the radios responsibly to avoid interference with other radio users.
Antennas: Antennas are a critical component of VHF radios. Proper antenna installation and positioning are essential for maximizing the range and effectiveness of communication.
VHF radios play a vital role in ensuring communication, safety, and coordination in various industries and activities. They are known for their reliability and effectiveness, especially in scenarios where direct communication over longer distances is necessary.Whether used on the water, in the air, or on land, VHF radios are valuable tools for maintaining contact and responding to emergencies.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it transmit gps when transmitting a mayday |
Answer: | No, this is not a GPS equipped unit. You'll have to spend significantly more for that capability. |
Question: | When will you ship my order |
Answer: | They shipped my order to NZ within a few days |
Question: | Can the Atlantis 155 be recharged with an optional or universal AC charger |
Answer: | The unit I purchased included a 120v AC adapter. If using a universal type AC charger, make sure to pay attention to the voltage/amperage/polarity requirements as you can destroy electronics very easily if using the wrong type. This information can be found in the included manual. We really like this radio for what it is, but do not expect a $500 radio at this price. |
Question: | Want to connect the handheld to my mast antenna that has PL259 Is the antenna on the 155 removable and what type of connection is it |
Answer: | Kids have it at beech house might not see it for weeks |

User questions & answers
Question: | I can only hit two where I live. Is the extra 3 watts going to gain any range |
Answer: | ANTENNA ANTENNA ANTENNA The extra watts will do less to improve transmission and reception than a quality antenna. As others have said, to increase your signal strength at the receiving radio by one S unit you have to quadruple the power output. The difference between the UV-5R standard radio and the "8 watt" "high power" radios is only a doubling of power. If you are on the move use the Nagoya 771 antenna (and watch you don't poke out your eye). If you are stationary, a homebrew 2 meter dipole or the Ed Fong antenna will significantly improve your transmission and reception. Amateur Extra HAM instructor VP local HAM club |
Question: | what kind of range can I expect |
Answer: | With the included antenna, you will get about 10 kilometers on open area land. About 5 kilometers in suburban settings. In urban settings, aabout a kilometer or two. In a boat, a bit further than 10kilometers. With the Nagoya extended antenna, you can make 20 kilometers, more or less, on open ground. However, use an external antenna on the roof of a building and you can double that range! Power does increase range. But, antenna increases range far more than more power. |
Question: | I am trying to receive frequencies in the 800mhz range but it will not allow me to enter |
Answer: | You can program these for whatever frequencies you want by downloading CHIRP and modifying the radio drivers with a text editor... Then just change the frequency range to 900mhz or whatever you want... I would not suggest trying to transmit at those frequencies but people have had some success with receiving frequencies out of band that way... You may also want to try an RF downconverter if you would rather go the hardware way instead of the software way... More info at http://www.brickolore.com/2012/05/baofeng-uv-5r-extreme-receive.html |
Question: | Which frequencies will I be required to become licensed for? How do I know which repeaters I might use and their associated membership fees? Thank you |
Answer: | You cannot use this radio in any unlicensed frequency. It is not type accepted for any radio service and is therefore illegal to sell, advertise, market, or ship to anywhere in the US. It is probably legal to use in a Ham band if you have a ham license. Ham licenses come with some great benefits, such as being able to use un-aproved radios, it is well worth the effort to get one. BTW, I have two of these radios. They work about as well as a UV-5R, of which they are a derivative They just over-powered a 5 watt radio to make it spit out 8 watts. It gets you VERY little extra distance and the transmission is really really dirty. It blows all over the 2 meter bands. If you want to see what the FCC does to out of service marketing Google "FCC DA-18-980A1". This radio has no legal use in the US except on the ham bands by hams. It is very illegal to use for MURS and FRS, and not even OK for FMRS. It transmits so dirty it is pretty obvious to anyone with a good HR rig with a display or an FCC truck that you are using a BF-F8HP. It's got a rather unique signal signature. If you want a Baofeng get one of these. They are all certified part 90 which makes them legal to sell and ship, and no questions about using them for Ham use. And get a ham license, it really opens up your options. User questions & answers
Question: | Does this have a scan all channel feature? Also, does this use a common coax antenna connection |
Answer: | Yes, you can scan all channels or build a specific scan list. It uses a common PL-259 coax connector. SO-239 on the radio. |
Question: | So this fixed mount does NOT come with the exterior trim ring for dash mounting |
Answer: | no |
Question: | does this require an attena |
Answer: | Yes. It will require a VHF marine antenna. Standard Horizon does not make antennas. |
Question: | Does this broadcast and receive normal cb frequencies |
Answer: | No it’s a FM marine band radio |
Question: | Can readout be set for degrees, minutes, seconds |
Answer: | No...but converting is easy... Example: 38 15.625' is 38 15' 37.5' (.625*60=37.5) Also, one cannot change which system is used. Also, although it says BeiDou, I do not think it can use that as I display only shows GPS and GLONASS satellites and there is not menu setting that I can find to change that. But BeiDou is not needed and less accurage. |
Question: | can this unit help find survey pins |
Answer: | If you mean by location then yes it can give you the general area to search. |
Question: | Is their an owners manual for this unit |
Answer: | It comes with a folded sheet of instructions--the instructions are easy to read. The units measure position roughly accurate to about 5m and measure distance and areas with accuracies related to that accuracy. Note: Although the units advertise as doing BeiDou besides GPS and GLONASS, the units that I have received only do GPS and GLONASS. In the photo you can see a row of bars for GPS and a row for GLONASS. There is no third row for BeiDou despite the advertising that it will also use BeiDou. |
Question: | Is there a spanish setting for this gps |
Answer: | No but the language use is very little and it is simple to operate. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the transmission range |
Answer: | The neckband allows you to have your earbuds handy at all times without actually having them in your ears. This is particularly useful if you are using them for phone calls and don't want them in your ears between calls. (I tried regular buds once, but found I couldn't hear the person standing next to me with them in.) The next band also keeps them secure if you are using them while being active (physical work, sports, etc.). |
Question: | can the HX890 be charged with a solar panel |
Answer: | I’ve had it connected to an iPhone and my computer at the same time, but never 2 iPhones at the same time. |
Question: | What chart does the gps use & displayed? i'd like to rely on this for basic navigation in the san juan islands on my 25' sailboat |
Answer: | Yes, it's just about correct positioning of sensor. |
Question: | Is the one negative review on here actually pointing out that water got under the plastic lcd film that protects the radio in shipping |
Answer: | Those details will be stored on your wrist unit or cycling computer; not on the sensors themselves. |
