12 best marine vhf radios
Marine VHF radios are essential communication devices used in the maritime industry and recreational boating. They operate on the Very High Frequency (VHF) band, specifically allocated for marine use, and are a critical component of marine electronics. Here's what you should know about marine VHF radios:
Communication: Marine VHF radios are primarily used for ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communication. They allow boat operators to communicate with other vessels, marinas, harbormasters, and emergency services, promoting safety and coordination on the water.
Frequency Range: Marine VHF radios operate within the 156.0 to 162.025 MHz frequency range, which is reserved exclusively for maritime communication. This frequency range offers clear and reliable communication over relatively short distances.
Channels: VHF radios have specific channels allocated for various types of communication. Channel 16 (156.800 MHz) is the international hailing and distress frequency and is continuously monitored by rescue services. Other channels are designated for different purposes, such as weather updates, port operations, and ship-to-ship communication.
Emergency Communication: Channel 16 is the dedicated emergency channel. In case of a distress call or emergency situation, boaters can use this channel to request assistance. It is vital to have a functioning marine VHF radio on board to ensure prompt response from authorities and nearby vessels.
Digital Selective Calling (DSC): Many modern marine VHF radios are equipped with DSC capabilities. DSC allows boaters to send automated distress signals with their vessel's location information to the Coast Guard and other vessels equipped with DSC radios. This feature significantly enhances emergency response.
Range: The range of marine VHF radios varies depending on several factors, including the power output of the radio, the height of the antenna, and the local terrain. Typically, VHF radios have a range of up to 20 miles for line-of-sight communication, although this range can be extended with the use of repeaters.
Weather Updates: Some marine VHF radios can receive weather broadcasts and forecasts, providing boaters with up-to-date information about changing weather conditions. This is crucial for planning safe voyages.
Licensing: In many countries, operators of marine VHF radios are required to obtain a license. These licenses typically involve passing a basic competency exam to ensure users understand proper radio etiquette, safety procedures, and channel usage.
Antennas: Proper antenna installation is crucial for the effective operation of marine VHF radios. Antennas should be mounted as high as possible on the vessel for better range and reception.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance and testing of marine VHF radios are essential to ensure they are in working order when needed. This includes checking the antenna connections, testing the radio's functionality, and ensuring the DSC feature is properly set up.
Marine VHF radios are a vital tool for boaters to maintain safety and communication while on the water. They play a critical role in emergency situations and help boaters stay informed about weather conditions and other vessels in their vicinity. Proper knowledge of marine radio etiquette and regulations is essential for safe and effective communication.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this have a scan all channel feature? Also, does this use a common coax antenna connection |
Answer: | Yes, you can scan all channels or build a specific scan list. It uses a common PL-259 coax connector. SO-239 on the radio. |
Question: | So this fixed mount does NOT come with the exterior trim ring for dash mounting |
Answer: | no |
Question: | does this require an attena |
Answer: | Yes. It will require a VHF marine antenna. Standard Horizon does not make antennas. |
Question: | Does this broadcast and receive normal cb frequencies |
Answer: | No it’s a FM marine band radio |
Question: | Can readout be set for degrees, minutes, seconds |
Answer: | No...but converting is easy... Example: 38 15.625' is 38 15' 37.5' (.625*60=37.5) Also, one cannot change which system is used. Also, although it says BeiDou, I do not think it can use that as I display only shows GPS and GLONASS satellites and there is not menu setting that I can find to change that. But BeiDou is not needed and less accurage. |
Question: | can this unit help find survey pins |
Answer: | If you mean by location then yes it can give you the general area to search. |
Question: | Is their an owners manual for this unit |
Answer: | It comes with a folded sheet of instructions--the instructions are easy to read. The units measure position roughly accurate to about 5m and measure distance and areas with accuracies related to that accuracy. Note: Although the units advertise as doing BeiDou besides GPS and GLONASS, the units that I have received only do GPS and GLONASS. In the photo you can see a row of bars for GPS and a row for GLONASS. There is no third row for BeiDou despite the advertising that it will also use BeiDou. |
Question: | Is there a spanish setting for this gps |
Answer: | No but the language use is very little and it is simple to operate. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do i activate my radio |
Answer: | Go to https://www.boatus.com/MMSI/MMSI/Home and register for an MMSI number. Once the MMSI number has been obtained it must be entered into the radio. Push the "CALL/SET" to enter the DSC menu then look for the MMSI entry option. Follow the prompts. |
Question: | I have a cobra marine radio f57b. Can I use the radio without requesting a mmsi |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Does it work in the Middle east |
Answer: | i dont know works great midwest |
Question: | WHAT IS CLASS-D |
Answer: | Both category A and D radios can send and receive digitally encoded distress calls on channel 70, which is reserved exclusively for digital communications. Category A radios, however have two separate receivers, with one constantly tuned to channel 70. Category A radios are therefore more flexible and capable of delivering advanced communication capabilities. With the press of a button, all DSC equipped VHF radios can send a distress call in digital form on channel 70. The call, sent in much less than one second, includes your unique identification number (MMSI) and if the radio is connected to a GPS or Loran C, the precise location of your boat. The distress call will continue to be sent until it is answered by another station. The station hearing the call will likely call your radio on channel 16 or, in the case of the Coast Guard on 22A and begin the process of bringing you the help you need. Having a highly automatic way of making your need for assistance known has obvious advantages. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this radio as a scanner to listen to great lake freighter radio traffic |
Answer: | Yes, but if you only want to listen to voice traffic, a cheaper VHF, without DSC and GPS, will also work fine. Most are about $100 cheaper. This radio is suitable for recreational vessels involved in racing and coastal cruising. |
Question: | is this pair of radios? (2 radios for |
Answer: | Nope, it is a single radio. The two-way designation means it both receives and transmits, as apposed to, say, your car radio, which only receives. |
Question: | how far off shore will this radio work |
Answer: | Dennis, I have only used it in local waters but believe this VHF will work 15 to 20 miles away. If you go off shore (15 to 50 miles) you should rely on a VHF with large antenna etc. |
Question: | If I buy 3 of these radios can I talk and listen to others on the same channel |
Answer: | Recent FCC change makes it legal to talk from shore to a boat on the water. Must restrict oneself to marine related traffic. Effective January 2017, the use of portable VHF radio ashore is allowed, “so long as it is limited to enhancing the usefulness of marine VHF radios without negatively affecting maritime communications.” From BoatUS Magazine, April-May, 2017 |

If using a universal type AC charger, make sure to pay attention to the voltage/amperage/polarity requirements as you can destroy electronics very easily if using the wrong type.
