10 best handheld vhf transceivers
Handheld VHF transceivers are portable two-way radios that operate in the VHF (Very High Frequency) band and are commonly used in marine and boating applications. These devices are essential for communication between vessels, marinas, and the shore, ensuring safety and coordination on the water. Here's what you should know about handheld VHF transceivers:
Marine Communication:
- Handheld VHF transceivers are a crucial part of marine communication equipment, enabling boaters and sailors to stay in touch with each other and with coastal authorities.
VHF Frequency Band:
- VHF radios typically operate within the 156-174 MHz frequency range, which is reserved for marine communication. This band offers better signal propagation over water compared to UHF (Ultra High Frequency) radios.
Channel Selection:
- Handheld VHF radios come with multiple channels, including both international and local channels, for various purposes such as distress calls, hailing other vessels, and general communication.
Emergency Functions:
- Many handheld VHF transceivers have dedicated emergency buttons (e.g., the "red button") that can transmit a distress signal with GPS coordinates to nearby vessels and authorities, ensuring rapid response in emergencies.
Waterproof and Buoyant Design:
- Marine VHF radios are designed to withstand exposure to water and are often buoyant, making them float if accidentally dropped in the water.
Range and Antennas:
- The effective communication range of handheld VHF radios varies depending on factors like antenna height, atmospheric conditions, and obstacles. Using external antennas can extend their range.
Weather Alerts:
- Many models include NOAA weather alert features, allowing users to receive real-time weather updates and storm warnings.
Battery Life:
- Battery life is a crucial consideration for handheld VHF radios, especially on long journeys. Some models come with rechargeable batteries, while others use replaceable batteries.
Channel Scanning and Monitoring:
- Handheld VHF transceivers often support channel scanning and monitoring features, allowing users to listen to multiple channels simultaneously.
VOX (Voice-Activated Transmission):
- VOX enables hands-free communication, activating the radio when you speak. This is useful when your hands are occupied with other tasks.
Regulations and Licensing:
- To use marine VHF radios legally, operators must adhere to regulations specific to their region, including obtaining the necessary licenses.
Brand and Model Options:
- Various reputable brands, such as Icom, Standard Horizon, and Uniden, offer a range of handheld VHF transceivers with different features and price points.
Handheld VHF transceivers are an essential safety tool for any boater or mariner, as they facilitate communication and coordination in various situations, including emergencies. It's crucial to choose a reliable and suitable model for your specific needs and to be aware of the regulations governing their use in your area.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work with a Kore Aviation P |
Answer: | no |
Question: | Can I listen to 700mhz / 800mhz freqs |

Question: | Will this radio transmit on any ham frequencies outside the air / nav bands? Would like to communicate with wife on ground with her VX |
Answer: | No. This is an amateur band radio on 2 meters. It requires an FCC license (test required) to operate. It will not transmit nor receive on CB frequencies. |
Question: | What does it include in the package |
Answer: | This is a "Customer questions & answers" area, not the dealer/distributor question area, so don't expect an answer from Amazon or SARASOTA AVIONICS INTERNATIONAL. However, I can provide that the US AC adapter with US prongs, is capable of an input of 100-240V ~50-60Hz (Yaesu AC Adapter SAD-18B). So all you'd need to get to make it work is a simple, appropriate country adapter to plug the provided AC adapter into. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there an adapter pack to use aa batteries such as with the earlier fta |
Answer: | No. This is a compact radio and comes with a rechargeable Li-ion battery pack and charge cradle. No option for using AA cells. |
Question: | I see Software for programing as a download but no programing cable? Is it avaiable |
Answer: | The reprogramming cable does not come with the radio. You can buy one for about $25 if you need it. (I just did a Web search for “Yaesu 250 programming cable”.) 99% of all the features are accessible via the Setup menu on the radio. This is a great basic VHF backup radio for the price. |
Question: | Does the headset adapter allow you to plug directly into the Bose A20 and uses the mic activator on the airplane yoke |
Answer: | The BOSE A20 will connect to the radio via the supplied headset adapter. Ensure that you set the mic to external on the radio, otherwise the headset microphone will not work to the radio. You will need an inline, remote PTT switch, connected via the headset adapter, and mount it on the yoke |
Question: | What does it mean by comm only? i would still be able to talk 2-way |
Answer: | It means that receiving radio-navigation channels (108-117.95 MHz;"VOR") is not included. Yes, you will be able to talk and receive on other channels(118~133 MHz). |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where this device has been manufactured |
Answer: | The ICOM IC-A25N Transceiver is manufactured in Japan. |
Question: | Does this come with a charger |
Answer: | Yes. It comes with the 110 wall plug in |
Question: | Is there DME capability |
Answer: | No, but has GPS. Not much experience playing with the Nav functions. |
Question: | Can the gps functionality connect to an ipad to use foreflight |
Answer: | No. From my experience there is no connectivity with foreflight. This radio uses the Icom RS-Aero app and Bluetooth to communicate. You can plan your own routes in their app but no connectivity with anything even google or Apple Maps. Great radio but stand alone unit. Bluetooth will work with your ipad and headset though if it is equipped. Nice for back up without fumbling for cords but you do need to turn on Bluetooth from the radio. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do these monitors use a male or female voice to sound alerts |
Answer: | These detectors are best at detecting motion across their field of view. The field of view is about 60 degrees from side to side and about 30 degree up and down. The range is less than 20 feet. They are not good for detecting head on movement. |
Question: | Does this dakota alert murs transmitter come with the silver extendable antenna (older model) or a shorter black whip antenna (newer model). thanks |
Answer: | I see no lights on the device when it is triggered. |
Question: | Will the transmitter ( sensor ) work thru glass |
Answer: | The following chart compares the differences between the Motion Sensors:X10 Part PRO Part Detection Dawn/Dusk Detection No Motion Off Time Weather ResistantMS14A PMS03 Always or Night Only Fixed Enabled Variable YesMS16A PMS04 Always or Night Only Variable Variable Yes |
Question: | Is this the same model as the "Dakota 4 mile |
Answer: | I only have a 1500 ft driveway with sensors located at different points. I do not extend the antennas of either sending unit as the signal at the receiver is quite strong. If I extend either antenna I pick up CB traffic over a mile away on I-40. |
Product features
MURS Alert Probe Sensor
The MURS Alert Probe Sensor is a long-range wireless driveway alarm that will detect vehicles only. It combines the features of the vehicle sensor drive alert with our MURS Alert technology. The MURS Probe is very reliable and will not give false signals from large animals or other sources. When it detects a vehicle, it will send an alert signal to either the M538-BS or M538-HTtransceivers.
Chime Module for MURS
The MURS Chime is an auxiliary chime that can be connected to the NO relay output on the M538-BS transceiver. It will play one of three tunes ("Westminster Chime", "London Bridge" or "Oh, My Darling") when the base station receives a signal from one of our MURS transmitters. The chime has a volume control and operates on two AA alkaline batteries.
2-Way MURS Base Station
The M538-BS is a base station MURS transceiver that will receive alert signals from the MURS Alert transmitter and also can be used for two-way voice communications between other MURS transceivers. The M538-BS has five channels and 38 sub channels to help you communicate with other users. It is powered by a plug-in transformer and capable of communicating over distances of several miles, depending on local terrain.
