4 best rearview cameras

Rearview cameras, also known as backup cameras or reversing cameras, are electronic devices installed in vehicles to provide a clear view of the area behind the vehicle when reversing. They are a valuable safety feature, particularly in larger vehicles like trucks and SUVs, as well as for improving overall driving safety. Here's what you should know about rearview cameras:

  1. Purpose: Rearview cameras are primarily designed to help drivers when reversing their vehicles. They provide a visual aid that helps drivers see obstacles, pedestrians, and other vehicles in their blind spots, reducing the risk of accidents while backing up.

  2. Installation: Rearview cameras can be factory-installed in new vehicles or added as aftermarket accessories to existing vehicles. Aftermarket options are widely available and can be installed by professionals or even as DIY projects for those with some technical expertise.

  3. Components: A typical rearview camera system consists of a small camera mounted on the rear of the vehicle, a display screen (usually integrated into the vehicle's dashboard), and wiring connecting the camera to the display. Some modern vehicles have wireless camera systems.

  4. Types of Displays: The display can be integrated into the vehicle's rearview mirror, dashboard, or infotainment system. Some cameras provide a direct feed to a smartphone or tablet through a dedicated app.

  5. Wide-Angle Views: Rearview cameras often have wide-angle lenses to capture a broad view of the area behind the vehicle. This helps drivers see not only obstacles directly behind them but also those in their peripheral vision.

  6. Guidelines and Gridlines: Many rearview camera systems display guidelines or gridlines on the screen to assist with parking and alignment. These guidelines can help drivers gauge the distance to objects in the camera's field of view.

  7. Night Vision: Some advanced rearview cameras are equipped with infrared technology to improve visibility in low-light conditions or at night.

  8. Legislation: In several countries, rearview cameras are required safety features on new vehicles, particularly in the United States, where they have been mandatory in all new passenger vehicles since May 2018.

  9. Safety Benefits: Rearview cameras have been shown to reduce the risk of accidents, especially involving pedestrians and children, who may be less visible to drivers when they are close to the rear of a vehicle.

  10. Parking Assistance: In addition to safety benefits, rearview cameras are helpful for parking in tight spaces, making it easier for drivers to parallel park and maneuver in crowded areas.

  11. Maintenance: Like any electronic component, rearview cameras may require maintenance or occasional cleaning to ensure clear and reliable operation.

In summary, rearview cameras are essential safety features in modern vehicles that help drivers safely navigate while reversing. They come in various configurations, provide wide-angle views, and often include useful features like guidelines and night vision capabilities.Additionally, they contribute to improved safety, especially in preventing accidents involving pedestrians and obstacles behind the vehicle.

Rear View Mirror: Necessity!

One of the best ways to protect yourself and other people from an accident is to have a backup camera on the rear end of your vehicle. These cameras are basically a rearview mirror with the one distinct modification: they can screen built into the mirror and camera lens facing outside, enable you to see what is behind and potentially what is under your vehicle as you reverse. New model vehicles have a built-in camera, but what if yours have not. For those who have no plans of buying new cars, the good news is you can buy a backup camera alone and all you have to do is to install it. The Pyle PLCM 4550 backup and rearview camera features a Marine Grade Camera Construction, waterproof and fog resistant, low lux light performance, 170° viewing angle that automatically activates when placed in reverse gear. Sure, you can buy generic ones but why settle for something ordinary when you can get extraordinary? Pyle PLCM 4550 is a great investment and can save lives by preventing accidents.

User questions & answers

Question: Wondering about the working distance. Will this work behind my travel trailer a distance of 22 feet from behind my tow vehicle
Answer: Mine works great behind my 28 foot Terry Trailer.
Question: Will it drain the battery if connected to a constant 12v supply
Answer: Yes. If the unit is on and the vehicle is off the car battery will discharge and will need a jump to start. There are two ways to avoid this. One is to plug the unit into a power accessory outlet that does not supply electrical power when the ignition is turned off. Another option is to wire the unit into a fuse box cavity or hot wire somewhere in the dash that does not supply power when the ignition is off. Of course you could manually turn the device on when you start the vehicle and turn it off or unplug it from a power outlet each time you turn off the ignition. I preferred to tap into the dash fuse box using an inexpensive adapter that I purchased from an auto supply store. In doing so the unit is protected by a fuse and it turns on and off automatically with the ignition switch.
Question: What is the view angle
Answer: According to a website which reviewed 2014 models, the viewing angle for this product is 110 degrees. http://rear-view-cameras-review.toptenreviews.com/yada-digital-wireless-backup-camera-review.html
Question: I want to put this on a motorhome but I can't see what the camera looks like. Can anybody tell me where I can find a picture the camera
Answer: Thanks for asking! I was about to buy this, and you question reminded me that I did not know what the camera looks like! I found a picture of it on page 2 of the User Manual. You can find the user manual on the main Amazon Product page, in the Product Details section, under the Technical Specification heading.
