11 best black box cameras
Black box cameras, often referred to as "black box recorders" or "event data recorders," are devices used in vehicles to record and store data related to the vehicle's operation and surroundings. They are typically installed in cars, trucks, and other vehicles for various purposes, including safety, security, and data analysis. Here's what you need to know about black box cameras:
Data Recording: Black box cameras record a range of data about the vehicle's performance and behavior. This data can include vehicle speed, acceleration, braking, engine RPM, steering input, and more. Some advanced models also record GPS location data.
Event Recording: These cameras are designed to capture specific events, such as accidents or incidents that trigger the device's sensors. When a significant event occurs, the black box camera saves a snapshot of data from before, during, and after the event. This information can be invaluable for accident reconstruction and analysis.
Accident Reconstruction: Black box cameras play a crucial role in accident reconstruction by providing objective data about the vehicle's actions leading up to and during an accident. This information can help determine the cause of the accident and establish liability.
Driver Behavior Monitoring: Some black box cameras are used by fleet operators and insurance companies to monitor driver behavior. They can track factors like speeding, harsh braking, and erratic driving, which can be used for safety training and risk assessment.
Security: Black box cameras can serve as a security measure for vehicles. They can record video footage of the vehicle's surroundings, both inside and outside, which can be useful for identifying and preventing theft or vandalism.
Data Retrieval: To access the data recorded by a black box camera, a specialized tool or software is typically required. This data can be used by law enforcement, insurance companies, and vehicle manufacturers for various purposes.
Privacy Concerns: The use of black box cameras raises privacy concerns, especially when they record both vehicle data and video footage inside the vehicle. Privacy regulations and laws vary by region, and it's essential to be aware of the legal requirements and restrictions regarding data collection and privacy.
Legal and Insurance Implications: The data recorded by black box cameras can have significant legal and insurance implications. It can be used as evidence in legal disputes, insurance claims, and investigations related to accidents and vehicle incidents.
Installation: Black box cameras are typically installed by professionals or individuals with knowledge of vehicle electronics. They are connected to the vehicle's electrical system and often have a discreet placement to avoid obstructing the driver's view.
Overall, black box cameras are valuable tools for vehicle safety, security, and data analysis. They can provide critical information in the event of accidents and offer insights into driver behavior and vehicle performance, making them essential devices in the realm of car electronics and vehicle electronics.

User questions & answers
Question: | I am planning to use A118 as a security surveillance DVR for the car. If I plug in or hardwire to 12V fuse over night, would it drain battery |
Answer: | I believe the input power to this unit is 5v and 1000 mA so ~5 watts, and if your car battery is rated at 12 V and 40 Ahrs so ~500 watts. You should be able to run this unit for 100 hrs from your car battery. You could have trouble starting your car depending how long you left the camera running also if there is one day you do not start your car I would say its not going to start if the camera is left running. You also have to be sure that you run the car enough during the day to charge back the power lost from running the camera at night, otherwise one unexpected day your car just wont start. So short answer one night should not completely drain your battery, but might be enough to have starting issues. |
Question: | Where can I get replacement adhesive |
Answer: | Also - http://www.amazon.com/NEEWER%C2%AE-Adhesive-Curved-mounts-helmet/dp/B00H5L2DX4/ref=pd_sim_sbs_hg_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=01G4S3CVSN4EHKAGTHVD |
Question: | what is the HDR button for |
Answer: | HDR is an acronym that stands for High Dynamic Range. It is a technique in Photography to capture a greater dynamic range of Brightness, between the lightest and darkest area of a scene or an object being photographed. |
Question: | I don't understand all these things included with the package, and what to do with them, how to use them to properly attach the camera to windshield |
Answer: | Hello,I am sorry you are having trouble but I will do my best to explain the answer box space provided. The main way to attach the camera is with the mount/clip. You should see a plastic piece that you can attach the sticky 3M red tape to on the back and groves on the other side where the B40 slides in and out of if you want to detach. The other accessories include a sleeve which hide your wires and bracket mounts which help in hiding and bundling them together. This is a great thread I am linking below so you can see how other users installed their B40 - https://dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/b40-a118-ae-cc30-mounted-in-your-car-photos.5909/ |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this make a decent recording of my baby in the back seat? She sings in the car and I want to catch a video |
Answer: | I don't think it will record a video inside the car since the camera is normally mounted on the windshield pointed to the front. You need a dual camera for front and back or a single camera that can be mounted to shoot inside the car. |
Question: | Is this capacitor based model or has internal battery |
Answer: | Internal battery |
Question: | Can this camera be swiveled around for rear recording |
Answer: | No its only foward recording |
Question: | How is the performance on this dashcam? I'm debating between this and the Rexing v1 2.7" Thanks |
Answer: | I'm definitely not happy with this device I spent 80 dollars on it for it to stop working after two weeks! I got it as a Christmas gift for my brother and it just stopped working now it won't go past the "welcome" screen the bad thing is that I didn't purchase the warranty but electronics don't always fail right away. Well this one did and now I don't know how to get it fixed for him. VERY UPSET & UNSATISFIED CUSTOMER!!! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be hardwired directly to battery? the car is bmw |
Answer: | Use an Add-a-Circuit device at the fuse block plus a ground wire and a dependable 12V to mini-USB adapter such as EDO. Check your fuse block for the correct fuse type. Use the smallest fuse you can find (2A?) I'd stick with a well-known brand for the adapter for safety. Most auto parts stores sell the necessary stuff. Be sure to use a fuse circuit that is switched with the ignition (or the delayed power circuit on some cars that keep accessory power on until the door is opened). |
Question: | Does the GPS track the speed or just the location |
Answer: | It logs the location coordinates and time. From that, an appropriate viewing software can calculate the speed as well. I use Registrator Viewer when I want to see my speed and location displayed while viewing. You can toggle between metric and standard. There may be other viewers out there as well, but Registrator is the first one I found that worked for me and I liked it enough to stop looking for others.http://www.registratorviewer.com/index_en.html |
Question: | Does the camera update it's time and date from GPS signal so that they never become wrong after long periods of not using vehicle |
Answer: | Yes it does. However, it does not correct for daylight savings time. I'm in the Easter time zone but set the camera to Atlantic time during Daylight Savings Time so that the date/time stamp is correct. |
Question: | Does anyone know if Black Box offers any warranty with these dash cams? I just had my first dash cam (different camera) go out after 6 months of use |
Answer: | I called on this & several other issues. I talked to competitors and got the most information on how things are made in China for this particular product and what "Black Box" actually means. According to these two companies there are small assembly houses, about 150 cottage assembly houses was estimated just for this product. The term "Black Box" is not the name of the company as you would expect. It actually just is a generic term for Dash Cam. Honoring your warranty is mostly based on the US importer that supplies Amazon. So you need to find out what you can from Amazon and the supplier. Where they are located etc to see if it is an enforceable policy as well as satisfaction from other customers in the US. I have not had a problem yet so nothing else that I can report. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a way to use the power in the rear view mirror? I know for radar detectors you can get adapters to hook into the power at the mirror |
Answer: | If there is 1 amp of 5 volt available your set. i doubt it's there though. There is plenty of room in the roof cavity above the map lights to install an adapter and a short cord to the unit. |
Question: | I cannot get the micro SD card to stay in. Frustrating! Any suggestions before I return it |
Answer: | My unit works perfectly - I don't know why yours is giving this trouble. Is the microSD card "right side up"? The included manual is worse than useless though. Herb Harm at www.octabode.com/herb/Baiklov_Instructions.pdf provides a 5 page self-generated manual which I found essential; the included manual is quite vague, even wrong in places. Print out Herb Harm's instruction, take it into your car, and set about doing exactly what he proposes. I don't know who he is - I found his paper by searching the web for a manual on the G1W-C. I read a few and settled on his. |
Question: | When I plug in my GW1-C, it interferes with my FM radio reception. Anyone else experience this |
Answer: | I experience no interference with radio reception. Does the interference happen with a certain frequency/station? Do you have anything else plugged in? Are you by any change using an FM transmitter?I mounted my camera pretty close to the roof line on my windshield. The antenna in my car is actually on the roof, and I have experienced no interference or problems with FM radio reception. You may have a faulty unit. |
Question: | With a 32 gig card how many hour will it record at best resolution1090 and at |
Answer: | At 1080 it will record without looping for 4 hours, at 720 it will record just a little less then 8 hours. I usually don't watch the footage unless something interesting happens during a trip that I want to look at. After the card is full the unit starts over and erases the card replacing older footage, so it never stops recording. It creates files that are 3 min. or 6 min. or 10 minutes long depending on your settings. when the card is full it simply erases 1 file, records over it, erases the next file and records over that, then the next and the next. If you record for 4 hours and plug it into your computer you will see 24 files, each 10 minutes long, 40 files 6 minutes long, or 80 files 3 minutes long depending on your settings. I suggest 10 minute loops. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have three question. First how long can you record. Second will the speed also be displayed in the recording. Lastly does it loop |
Answer: | Third question first - yes it loops, so you can record as long as you'd like to the limit of the storage card. I kept the one provided as all I am using it for is in case of an accident. I am not using the GPS, so it does not display speed. If you use the GPS feature, it will. |
Question: | Can you add a rear cam |
Answer: | You could use this as a rear camera if you have an adequate power supply available. |
Question: | Mine failed after 8 months. Battery expanded and the case just blew apart. How do I get warranty support |
Answer: | I would love to know this as well. Possibly try contacting the seller possibly? I've had mine for 2 months and the heat split the casing and it only gets around the low to mid nineties in my area. I also kept sun shades over my vehicle and it is garage kept. Dissapointing. |
Question: | Why does my unit keep freezing randomly? i'm using a 32gb class 10 samsung micro sd card thats been formatted. set to 3 minute loop |
Answer: | Hi - Can you try formatting the SD card to Fat32 Setting with 32bit cluster size on your computer or laptop? If this does not help afterwards, along with a reset, please contact your seller and they will send you a replacement without any hassle. |

Answer: | Here is an email exchange I had with Black Box. Looks like 64GB will work if formatted to FAT32 on your computer. Black Box - Amazon Marketplace Today at 4:48 PMTo xxxxxxxxxxxxxxHello you should be fine, 99% of cards will work, even up to 64GB as long as they are properly formated to Fat32 on your PC/MAC--- Original message ---I have ordered 2 Black Box G1W-H Hidden Dashboard Dash Cams and have a question regarding the proper mini SD card to purchase. I've read reports online that some cards malfunction in this unit. Are there specific cards that are known to not work properly with this unit? Can I buy any Class 10 card from a known manufacturer and be reasonably assured it will work?Thank you...Update: I've been using both units now for a of months now and everything is functioning normally. I'm using PNY 32GB, Class 10 cards in each of them with no issues. |
Question: | How long is the usb/charging cable? Can it be run around the frame of the windshield, or does it just hang down in the middle of your view |
Answer: | My cigar lighters/power ports on ford are always on so will hardwire into that and to an accessory On 12V + to a 3 way switch then to the HardWire Cable for this model so with 12V cut down to 5v into USB I will have choice of Always On/Always Off/ and On while Engine or key is on. BECAUSE....There are times for all three. Think About it. Best way to go. PS mine will be out of arms reach for power button in one configuration of two planned so a 3 way switch near me will work well. So hard wiring can tap into a dome lights power in rear. Also ordered a USB cell portable power for 10 bucks to Triple the battery on board cam for using away from car for a few hours.I would also avoid it pointed at sun setting/rising like every camera and think about your Sub Woofers forcing that G force detector to fill up files auto saved. Might be Most of you people's issue with a randomly quickly filled up flash card. |
Question: | Is there a way to turn off or down the display while driving |
Answer: | There is a timeout setting in the device so that after a certain time of being on, the screen will blank out. I think I have it currently set at 3 minutes so after it turns on, you can see the display for 3 minutes, after which, the screen will just be black for the remainder of the time that it is on. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I bought a 64gb sandisk sdxc card with my camera; has anyone had a problem with the 64gb sd cards..? mine will not work |
Answer: | I bought one of these today and figured out that they lied about the memory card capacity. I also received an error with my 64gb card. Luckily i can use the 64gb card in my Canon 7D MarkII otherwise i'd be pissed. |
Question: | The other G50 models have a 4x zoom. Does this G50 have it also |
Answer: | No idea |
Question: | What is the A V port for |
Answer: | Audio and video output to tv with proper cable. (Not included with camera) |
Question: | how to set IR night vision on this model ? manual says: short press of power button to open and close IR light .. tried that, no change |
Answer: | To my knowledge this camera does not have a true IR night vision mode. I tried various buttons as well. Cameras at this price point would not have this technology. With that being said, the unit's low light capability is mediocre. If there is ambient lighting (streetlights) it will capture decent video, however on a dark, unlit road you will not see any image other than the objects within the field of your headlights. You will not see anything outside the range of your headlights. |
