14 best sub enclosures
Sub enclosures, also known as subwoofer boxes or subwoofer enclosures, are specially designed structures or containers used to house and enhance the performance of subwoofers in car audio systems. These enclosures play a crucial role in optimizing the sound quality and output of subwoofers, which are responsible for producing low-frequency bass sounds in car audio setups. Here's what you should know about sub enclosures and their relevance in car audio and electronics:
Purpose: The primary purpose of a sub enclosure is to provide an acoustic environment that allows the subwoofer to operate efficiently and reproduce low-frequency sound waves accurately. It helps control and enhance bass response, ensuring that the bass is deep, tight, and powerful.
Types of Sub Enclosures:
- Sealed Enclosures: These are airtight boxes that provide tight and accurate bass. Sealed enclosures are known for their clean sound reproduction but typically require more power to achieve the same volume level as other types.
- Ported or Vented Enclosures: Ported enclosures feature a vent or port that allows air to flow in and out. This design can produce deeper bass with less power but may be less precise than sealed enclosures.
- Bandpass Enclosures: These enclosures use a combination of sealed and ported designs to produce extremely loud and focused bass, often at specific frequency ranges.
- Free-Air Enclosures: Also known as infinite baffle enclosures, these are designed to use the trunk of the car as the enclosure, saving space but requiring specific installation considerations.
Enclosure Size: The size of the sub enclosure is critical and should be chosen to match the specifications of the subwoofer. The enclosure's internal volume, shape, and design significantly impact the subwoofer's performance.
Materials: Sub enclosures are typically constructed from medium-density fiberboard (MDF) or plywood. These materials are rigid and minimize vibrations, helping to maintain sound quality.
Design Considerations: Proper design and construction of sub enclosures involve calculating the internal volume, tuning frequency (for ported enclosures), and ensuring airtight seals and bracing for rigidity.
Custom vs. Pre-made: Sub enclosures are available in both custom and pre-made configurations. Custom enclosures are often designed to match the specific subwoofer's requirements, while pre-made enclosures provide convenience but may require adaptation to the subwoofer's specifications.
Placement: The placement of sub enclosures within the vehicle can significantly affect sound quality. Common locations include the trunk, under seats, and in custom enclosures within the cabin.
Amplification: Subwoofers in enclosures require amplification to operate effectively. Car audio systems typically include dedicated subwoofer amplifiers to provide the necessary power.
Sound Quality vs. SPL (Sound Pressure Level): Sub enclosures can be tuned for different purposes. Some prioritize sound quality, while others aim for high SPL for competitions. The choice depends on the user's preferences and requirements.
Installation: Proper installation, including wiring, positioning, and sealing, is essential to ensure the sub enclosure's optimal performance and safety.
Sub enclosures are fundamental components in car audio systems, allowing enthusiasts to customize their sound experience and enjoy deep, powerful bass. Selecting the right type and size of sub enclosure is crucial for achieving the desired audio quality in car electronics and car audio systems.

User questions & answers
Question: | Could I pus these on a monoblock amp? Or would I have to bridge them myself |
Answer: | Yes they can be put on mono block, that's what I have set up. Just don't bridge it, it's only 2ohm stable not 1. |
Question: | Does anyone have the BOSS 1100 watt riot amp with these? If so how do you like? Does it hit hard |
Answer: | I've used it temporarily on the sealed enclosure version of these. BOSS amps are cheap for a reason though. Poor sound quality and it doesn't push anywhere near the 1000 watts these can handle. If you want a cheap amp that actually sounds good I'd recommend the Power Acoustik rzr1-2500d it's not 1000 watts RMS but it'll do 700+ on good electrical & sounds Way better than the boss amp |
Question: | anybody had these subs for awhile do they last |
Answer: | I have had these subs in the box 4 going on 6 years with a 3000 watt competition massive amp pushing 800 watts RMS bridged making it 200% overpowered I paid $122 for them six years ago and they are still thumping to this day |
Question: | Is this just the enclosure or is it the two 12" subwoofers and the enclosure in one deal |
Answer: | Everything you see, you get...no speaker wires though... |

User questions & answers
Question: | will this box fit in a 94 firebird in the hatchback |
Answer: | Yes it will fit but not enough air space according to the Rockford Fosgate's website recommended enclosure specs. Looks like they recommend approx 1.40 cu ft. and this box is right around .82 net volume. It'll work but if you really want to get the most out of that P3 I'd go with Crutchfield's Bass Bunker Model BB10-1V (1.20 cu ft) or maybe even the BB10-125V. (1.47 cu ft)- this will help that awesome p3 breathe. I own this E10SV and the BB10-1V and after switching to the Bass Bunker it's made a world of difference for me. I'm running a Sundown SA-10 in that Bass Bunker BB10-1V because Sundown calls for 1.0 to 1.25 cu ft in a ported box. Best decision I've made when it comes to a box. Crutchfield is of course known for their quality. This E10SV is not bad at all and is well built. Especially for the price. I just can't stress enough the importance and the difference it'll make by matching box specs to manufacturer's specs. Hope this helps. |
Question: | How big is the binding post mounting circle on the 10" sealed box? 3" or 4"? I would be replacing it with a better one |
Answer: | No but I have two of these boxes. One with a type r 10 and the other with an RE 10. For both of these setups they are wired down to 1ohm and I highly recommend adding polyfil to the box. I just added to the sides of the box. Gives it a more deeper bass than boomy. The box is tuned to 37 so it makes it sound a bit boomy on certain notes. Adding polyfil sorted that problem out for both boxes. So if you get it, polyfil is a must unless you like the boomy bass |
Question: | Will a 10 in hcca 2 ohm 2000 rms fit |
Answer: | why not measure the space you have and look at the size of the box to determine if it will fit? |
