12 best flash meters
Flash meters, also known as light meters or exposure meters, are essential tools in photography and cinematography used to measure the intensity of light in a given scene. These devices help photographers and cinematographers determine the proper exposure settings for their cameras and lighting equipment. Here are some key points about flash meters:
Light Measurement: Flash meters are designed to measure both ambient light (available light in the environment) and artificial light sources, such as flashes and studio lighting. They provide precise readings of light intensity in units such as lux or foot-candles.
Exposure Control: Flash meters are used to calculate the correct exposure settings for a camera, including shutter speed, aperture (f-stop), and ISO sensitivity. By measuring the light falling on a subject or scene, photographers can ensure accurate and consistent exposures.
Incident vs. Reflected Light: Flash meters can measure both incident and reflected light. Incident light meters measure the light falling on the subject, while reflected light meters measure the light that bounces off the subject. Incident light metering is often preferred for studio and portrait photography because it provides more accurate exposure information.
Spot Meters: Some flash meters are equipped with spot metering capabilities, allowing photographers to measure the light intensity at a specific point within the frame. Spot meters are valuable for precise control over exposure in complex lighting situations.
Flash Metering: Flash meters are particularly useful for photographers working with flash photography. They can measure the output of studio strobes, speedlights, and other artificial light sources, helping photographers adjust the flash power for desired lighting effects.
Lighting Ratios: Flash meters can be used to measure the lighting ratio between different light sources or areas within a scene. This is crucial for achieving desired lighting contrasts and mood in photography and cinematography.
Calibration: Flash meters should be regularly calibrated to ensure accuracy. Some models allow for user calibration, while others may require professional servicing.
Digital vs. Analog: Flash meters are available in both digital and analog (needle-based) formats. Digital meters often offer additional features such as data storage, exposure calculations, and customization options.
Built-in Memory: Some advanced flash meters have built-in memory to store exposure readings, which can be useful for reviewing and analyzing lighting setups.
Usage: Flash meters are commonly used in portrait, fashion, studio, and architectural photography, as well as in cinematography. They are valuable tools for achieving consistent and controlled lighting in various shooting scenarios.
Compatibility: When using flash meters with digital cameras, it's important to ensure compatibility with the camera's exposure system. Some flash meters are designed to work seamlessly with specific camera brands and models.
In summary, flash meters are indispensable tools for photographers and cinematographers seeking precise control over their lighting and exposure. Whether used in studio settings or on location, these meters provide valuable information to help achieve the desired look and mood in photographs and videos.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you check par readings with this |
Answer: | There really is only one way to calibrate a light meter; that’s to check the results with your particular camera. The exposure sensitivity with digital cameras will vary, so any meter’s factory pre-set calibration is usually a little over or under what the camera requires. Since the camera’s sensitivity is inflexible, the meter is designed to be adjustable. Take a few test shots based on the meter’s readings. After evaluating the exposures, you feel that some over or under exposure is needed, you may adjust the meter in 1/10 stop increments to match the camera. With the L-478 press "MENU", then Item #2-"Set Exposure Compensation". Take another round of test images to check if your adjustment is correct; repeat if necessary. Remember that the adjustment is specific to the camera in use; using a different camera may require performing this test again. |
Question: | is there a way to convert Lux readings to photographic EV values |
Answer: | Hi,The L-478D-U is a non radio unit. You can attach many manufacturers triggers via sync cord. The Sekonic L-478DR-U series meters have built-in wireless triggering for Elinchrom (Skyport), Phottix (Strato II, Ares II) and Pocket Wizard.Regards,Will H. |
Question: | Would you consider this an incident meter or does measure more reflective light |
Answer: | You will need the L-478DR-U version. It comes with a built in radio trigger. You will also need a flash with pocket wizard or external pocket wizard attached to flash. |
Question: | Does it work for Photography? Does it tell me the right aperture in F and shuttle speed |
Answer: | No difference really, just a way to tell US radios from others- FCC vs CE designations. The new model designated by "-U" was created to indicate that it operates on US frequencies (the FCC radio frequencies that PWs operate on in the US market). The purpose is to combat grey market product sold from overseas that often is not compatible with PW sold for the US market. Prior to the new model designation, the only way to tell if it was a US model was to look for the FCC or CE markings inside the battery cover, something not readily apparent when shopping on Amazon or eBay. In fact, I bought 2 L478D (sold and shipped by Amazon) over the past 2 years and both were not US FCC models so I had to return them. I bought the U model when it came out and am very happy with it. If you don't use the PW radio function, you won't see any functional differences. |

The flux of light received in a unit area of a certain side being shown is popularly known as illumination. The measuring unit in both United Kingdom and America is known as footcandles light,
but in Europe it is also known as meter candlelight. One foot-candles light is the illumination of light that falls on one side which is one foot away from a one foot-candlelight and exactly
intersecting with the light. Its abbreviated form is written as 1 Fc=1 Lm/ft, similarly, one-meter candlelight is the illumination of light that falls on a side which is one meter away from a
one meter candlelight and exactly intersecting the light. It is also called Lux i,e. the flux of light being received in each square meter is called the illumination of one Lumen.
- Measuring lights source: LED white light and all visible light.
- Measuring intensities of illumination in Lux or footcandles.
- Many applications include: Warehouses, factories, office buildings, restaurants, schools, library, hospitals, photographic, many video, parking garages, museums, art galleries, stadiums, building security.

Indispensable when establishing safe or minimum levels of illumination in a work or living environment.
- WORKING ON THE LIGHTING IN YOUR HOME? It can be very difficult to objectively assess light levels with the naked eye - use this meter to get an accurate reading of the actual light levels every time. Compare different lamp types and wattages. Check the light level when installing accent lighting. Or maybe you're replacing incandescent light bulbs with LED light bulbs? Use the ennoLogic lux meter to compare brightness before and after.
- DO MY PLANTS GET ENOUGH LIGHT? The quickest way to find out is with a portable luxmeter like this one. Whether it's for your beloved orchids, indoor herb garden, hydroponics setup, plant nursery or greenhouse, the eL200K makes checking light levels easy. Maybe you're using LEC grow lights and are wondering how much light actually gets to the plants? This tool will give you the answer.
- MANY OTHER USES: Find out how many lux of light the light box you use for bright light therapy puts out. Or maybe you need it for a science fair project. IMPORTANT NOTE: The ennoLogic lightmeter is NOT for photography. This device does NOT allow you determine the proper exposure for a photo. Its purpose is to show you light INTENSITY in lux or foot candles at any given spot.
- RELIABLE AND ROBUST LIGHT METER: Measurement range 0-200,000 lux. Lux and Foot-Candle units. MAX, MIN, and AVERAGE reading display and ANALOG BAR GRAPH DISPLAY. HOLD function. Analog outputs (DC and AC). Large 1.5"" LCD display with BACKLIGHT, easy to read even from a distance. Tripod mount (tripod not included). External power option. Auto power off with override option. Comes with carrying case, 4x AA batteries, analog output interface cable and user manual. 10 YEAR WARRANTY.
User questions & answers
Question: | Does this meter measure white led, hps, incandescent, and other types of outdoor lighting |
Answer: | I am not sure I understand the question. When used in the standard incident light meter mode (aimed at light source) it will give you the combinations of shutter and aperture values for a given ISO setting. In flash meter mode, it will give you the aperture values for the strobe or speedlight source for a given ISO. Shutter speed has no effect on the amount of strobe light entering the camera, only the aperture. However you must remain below the shutter sync speed for your camera unless your strobes are capable of hi-speed sync. Shutter speed only affects the amount of ambient (non-flash) light entering the camera. If you are using an external light meter such as the L-358, I would suggest setting the camera for manual aperture and shutter. |
Question: | Does this tell the par reading |
Answer: | Standard Sync cord for strobes. |
Question: | Does the light meter include calibration certification paperwork |
Answer: | Yes, The white lumisphere is part of this Sekonic L358 flash meter. Please see my photos. |
Question: | Can I use this on my fish tank |
Answer: | As far as I know the only internal modules for the Sekonic L358 are the FCC (US) and the CU (European) versions for the Pocket Wizard controllers. The transmitters operate on both ControlTL® and Standard frequencies of Pocket Wizard devices. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the battery included |
Answer: | Par is the dia. of a lamp in 1/8" s of an inch. Par38 = 4 3/4". |
Question: | Can I use this item to quickly and easily determine whether the working surface in a room is at or slightly below 25 foot-candles |
Answer: | I'm throwing in this answer because I wasn't satisfied with the answer holdpeak gave. I interpreted the intent differently so I'll answer according to my interpretation. First, No this device does not have the capability of outputting an EV value based on it's light measurements or directly doing a conversion from LUX to EV. It is NOT for photographic use. Second,It is an industrial incident meter for measuring light reaching surfaces only and would be used to comply with OSHA standards for minimum required work space illumination levels as an example. Because photographic work requires knowing how much light is reaching the film this and similar meters will not give useable readings. An example would be a mirror and a piece of black velvet on a table lit by the same light source at 500 LUX. The mirror reflects nearly 100% of the light while the velvet only reflects 2%. The meter will not show the difference in reflected light levels! Third, There is No formula for the direct conversion of LUX to Photographic EVs. EV scales are relative to film speeds more than LUX levels so calculations become multi-step processes to go from LUX to EVs. However you can find a standard EV scale and a generic chart showing approximated LUX levels for various light sources on Wikipedia. Be aware that the standard EV scale is based on a film speed of ISO100. Any change in film speed requires a shift in EVs for any given LUX level. Comparing the charts and adjusting for film speeds can help you create your own EV scale based on relative LUX levels which does not change the requirement to measure light reaching the lens not just falling on a surface. Last, this meter can be used for balancing the illumination from multiple light sources on a stage set or display to be photographed but would still need a photo exposure meter to set the camera for the shoot after doing so. |
Question: | Dose this work with 1000 watt hps lights |
Answer: | This product is used to measure incident light. |
Question: | Can the light meter store the data it measured |
Answer: | No, while it measures light levels, it doesn’t convert them for photo, cine, or video use. I use them to balance light on video shoots, but not determine settings. |
