User questions & answers

Question: Why is there such a big price difference in this lens? Some are $696 some $999 and in between. What gives
Answer: The more expensive lens is about 10 ounces heavier (!), and inch longer and has a wider diameter which you will see if you pull up the specs side by side on nikonusa.com. There are a few other differences like more diaphragm blades and a smaller minimum aperture. I am mostly happy with the less expensive model, but you might want to check out the Nikon P900 if you are shopping for a new camera and don't absolutely need a dslr.
Question: What is the difference between this new lens and the old 18-300 one? please be specific
Answer: Cheaper and lighter, but slower at the long end of the zoom when compared to the older Nikon 18-300. Lighter than my old Nikon 18-200 VR. A well worthwhile upgrade, for me that is.
Question: Will this lens work on a Nikon D
Answer: Nikon's 18-300mm is PERFECT for the D3200 & all DX SLR's from Nikon. It has a great range! Thanks - Service Photo in Baltimore.
Question: Which lens hood is compatible with this lens
Answer: This lens accepts the Nikon HB-39 hood.

User questions & answers

Question: Will it autofocus on D
Answer: I have the D5100... I would only be assuming it would focus on the d5300.
Question: Will the autofocus work on 50mm f/1.8G AF-S Nikkor lens for the D
Answer: Yes, the auto-focus will work. But remember this is an FX lens. Your DX D3200 camera will register it as a 75mm lens rather than a 50mm lens.
Question: Could you comment on the merits of 50mm F 1.8 vs. 85 mm F 1.8 for portrait photography much of which will just be shot in the home on a D
Answer: Either lense is fine for portrait use though, but I prefer to keep portraits to around 50-85mm so on my aps-c sensor body it left me with one choice. A fx lens on a dx body has a focal length of 1.5x the rating. So a 50mm on a D7100 comes out to a 75mm, and the 85mm lens acts like a 127.rmm lens. For this reason I chose the 50mm F1.8 lens. It has nice bokeh and since the length isn't too long the portrait image still has some depth and isn't flattened.
Question: nikon 50mm f/1.8g vs. nikon 50mm f/1.4g... which one
Answer: Get the 1.8 and use the difference to buy the 35 1.8g dx

Your DSLR’s Best Friend

A must-have for standard portraits and everyday use, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G is a lens that will absolutely surprise you. The 50mm focal length (75mm equivalent on DX format cameras) with a fast f/1.8 aperture allows you to capture stunning images with a shallow depth-of-field, letting your subjects stand out from their backgrounds. The AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G may soon become your new favorite lens.

Brilliance In Any Light Get Astonishing Low Light Results

This lightweight standard lens is a great travel companion because you never know when a beautiful, sunny day will turn cloudy and rainy. With its fast f/1.8 aperture, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G will capture even low-light situations with stunning brilliance.

Beautiful Background Blur Achieve More Natural Depth Of Field

Whether you're shooting portraits, food or nature—indoors or outdoors—the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G renders a beautiful, natural background blur (Bokeh) at its wider aperture settings. And its 50mm focal length is perfect for creating natural perspective in your photographs.

Capture Every Detail Shoot Tack-Sharp Portraits Every Time

Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior color consistency and reduced flare, while the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G's Aspherical Lens Element (AS) virtually eliminates coma and other types of aberrations, even when shooting at the widest available aperture. Pair that with Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for fast, accurate and quiet autofocus, and you can be sure all of your portraits will be tack sharp.

Silent Wave Motor

AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM). This technology converts 'traveling waves' into rotational energy to focus the optics. This enables high-speed autofocusing that's extremely accurate and super quiet.

M/A

Select NIKKOR lenses have a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens. This makes it possible to seamlessly switch to fine manual focusing while looking through the viewfinder.

Aspherical Lens

A lens with a curved, non-spherical surface. Used to reduce aberrations and enable a more compact lens size. Aspherical lenses minimize coma and other types of lens aberrations, even when used at the widest aperture. They are particularly useful in correcting distortion in wide-angle lenses and help contribute to a lighter, more compact design by reducing the number of standard (spherical) elements necessary. Aspherical lens elements correct these distortions by continuously changing the refractive index from the center of the lens.

Super Integrated Coating

Nikon Super Integrated Coating is Nikon's term for its multilayer coating of the optical elements in NIKKOR lenses.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work with NO PROBLEM AT ALL in a D7000? I read that the autofocus dosn't work in a D
Answer: Yes, it will. The D7000 has a focus feeler that allows it to focus older "AF" lenses. I have an old AF 28-105 and autofocus works flawlessly.
Question: Is this compaible with the Nikon D40X
Answer: It will work, and all in all work as well as most manual focus lenses, better than some, since the d40x will meter correctly. It will however NOT autofocus. If manual focusing is your cup of tea, have at it, as the focal length will be fine for portraits and it is affordable.
Question: Is this lens compatible with Nikon D
Answer: Yes, it's compatible. But you won't get the autofocus feature. You will need an AF-S lens.
Question: I am a newbie with a d5100. I don't understand how some reviews say it is autofocus, & some say it is not
Answer: The D5100 only autofocuses with the latest AF-S lens, and also older professional AF-I lens. Briefly, AF-S lens have a built-in motor to drive the focusing mechanisms on the lens, whereas AF lens rely on the motor in the camera body (like the D90 or the D7000). Most traditional screw-drive AF lenses will not autofocus on the D5100, but will autofocus on the D90/D7000. Lens that say "AF-S," will autofocus with the d5100, and most lenses sold today for the D5100 are AF-S. The D5100 has no internal autofocus motor, so it will not autofocus with original-style screw-drive AF lenses. This is why some lens will autofocus with the D5100, and some won't.

User questions & answers

Question: is this lense good for macro photos
Answer: Yes, the lens does very good macro photos, to get 1:1 aspect the distance is about 6 inches, I also recomend tu use a flash ring to avoid thshadows in some shots. The lens is great, works very good on macro and casual shooting with a very good f2.8 stop.
Question: Is this lens a wide angle lens? I guess I just might be confused on what that term "wide angle" actually refers to
Answer: No, it's not a wide angle lens, it's a close-up lens. It's an excellent prime lens that I use routinely but it has the bonus capability of getting in very very close. There have been situations that I have had the thing I was shooting under the lens hood, it gets that close. It's my favorite utility lens and use it on my D7000 as well as my D600.
Question: is this good for close ups
Answer: Yes, I like to use manual focus, sometimes I use aperture priority mode to change the depth of field. This week I've gotten some good clear pictures of honey bees on flowers.
Question: I want to shoot jewelry. w the 100mm Macro I have now, the depth of field if such that only part of a ring will be in focus. Will this lens help
Answer: Greetings, close up photography has been my preference for 35 years. I've used everything from point &shoot's to medium format cameras. From Leica, to Konica. Nikon, being my preference. So, I'd like to try to help you with this question, as I've photographed a lot of jewelry, for Estates. 100 mm, is pretty long, for getting really close. The 1:1 (life size) factor, although true doesn't mean distance is moot. Keep in mind, any dedicated "micro" (macro) lens, has a very short depth of field. Unlike say a prime 50 mm, where depth of field is based on the f stop, with a dedicated micro, you only have a single stop. So, depth of field, remains very short. Now, for the best lens to shoot very close jewelry. The shorter the focal length, the better. My favorite is in the 50 mm or shorter, depending on what camera I'm using. Not all brands, offer the same focal length in micro lenses. Nikon's long time AF 60 mm 2.8, later AFD 60, and today's 40 mm G series (G for APC forma) all work well when you want to get very close. Photographing jewelry is always a challenge. Lighting is diffacult, controlling reflection, and motion need to be considered. Jewelry, requires a very steady rest. Tripod, or otherwise. If your camera has a mirror lock up, that helps also. Best wishes. Michael T.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this work with the d
Answer: Yes
Question: Does this work good for nikon D
Answer: With this you can see daytime and nighttime vision, which changes automatically in my experience. Additionally, there is a dial you can use to adjust the infrared light for night vision.
Question: Would this work with the nikon d500? And autofocus too? Thanks
Answer: Yes, this night vision device is locked at 2 magnification.
Question: Would this work with the Nikon d5200? And autofocus too
Answer: Though it's packed away in our paranormal equipment Pelican cases, I do believe this unit is 7.5v (volts). That mean it would take 5- 1.5v AA batteries. I'm sure it would NOT take "AAA" size batteries, even though they are also 1.5 volts; this would be because the AA are bigger, and would last a little longer than AAA using the Infrared features. Product features

Super-telephoto Reimagined

Proprietary Phase Fresnel technology

For nearly two centuries, Fresnel lenses were used in lighthouses to project a strong beam of light. By harnessing the idea in reverse—for gathering light instead of projecting it—Nikon engineers can create lenses that are shorter and lighter, with the same image quality and zoom power of much larger lenses.

Versatile and Durable

Ready for the field The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR is extensively weather-sealed and includes a protective front meniscus with Nikon’s Fluorine Coating (FLC), which repels water droplets, dust and grime and easily wipes clean.

Travel light

Nikon’s smallest, lightest full-frame 500mm prime lens ever—approx. 9.3 inches long and 3.2 lbs.

Bring the world in reach

Powerful 500mm focal length (750mm equivalent on DX-format) brings the shots that matter in reach.

Shoot in the moment

Handheld vibrations are tamed by VR image stabilization equivalent to a shutter speed 4.0 stops* faster.

Outstanding image quality

When combined with Nikon’s Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass and other NIKKOR glass elements, the Phase Fresnel element produces high resolution, high contrast images with beautiful background blur.

More reach when you need it

When shooting with a DX format DSLR or a full-frame DSLR in DX-Crop Mode, the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR produces a whopping 750mm equivalent angle of view. Add the optional AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III for 1.4x more reach with only 1-stop loss of light and maintain autofocus.

Fast autofocus

Lighter, more compact optics don’t just benefit your mobility—a lighter focus lens group allows the autofocus system to focus faster, too. With the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR, Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM) is able to operate at peak performance for fast, quiet autofocus.

The ring type SWM offers quiet AF operation. Although all lens groups shift during focusing, the front element and filter mount do not rotate and the barrel length does not change, which is useful when using filter mounted SB-R200 Wireless Remote Speedlight units.

Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens: Highly Recommended by dpreview.com

The AF-S Nikkor 35mm F1.8G DX is a lens which certainly caused a degree of dismay on its release, with many Nikon fans disappointed by the decision to make it compatible with the DX format only. However the main benefit of that decision is plain for all to see - even at its introductory price the lens costs rather less than the venerable AF-Nikkor 35mm F2.0D, despite the addition of an AF-S motor to allow autofocusing on Nikon's entry-level D40 / D40X / D60 bodies. It's also less than half the price of the few other DX format standard primes currently on the market (such as the Pentax 35mm F2.8 Macro, Tokina 35mm F2.8 Macro and Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM), so Nikon has managed with this lens to produce the first genuinely inexpensive (sub-$200) fast standard prime designed specifically for digital SLRs.

Within this context, the lens's performance is very impressive. It produces finely detailed images at all apertures (although with somewhat low contrast wide open), focuses quickly and accurately, and handles well in a small, light package. In particular, it's much sharper than typical DX standard zooms such as the Nikon AF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 DX VR or Nikon AF-S 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 DX VR. The fast maximum aperture allows pictures to be taken hand-held in low light levels, while maintaining relatively fast shutter speeds to avoid blur from subject motion (a key advantage over image-stabilised, but slow, kit zooms when photographing people without flash indoors). The slightly less tangible aspects of image quality - such as resistance to flare, and the rendition of out-of-focus regions of the frame - are also dealt with nicely.

If the lens has one major flaw, it is a certain propensity to show chromatic aberration, of both the lateral kind (which can be corrected by the in-camera JPEG processing of the D90 and D300), and the longitudinal (which cannot). To be fair the latter is a pretty well unavoidable with a fast prime, but the 35mm F1.8G DX suffers from it to a rather high degree, and in particular can give some unpleasant purple fringing effects if you're not careful.

Overall, though, it seems almost churlish to complain about these flaws in a lens so inexpensive, which gives otherwise such fine results. It's good to see Nikon finally addressing the lack of purpose-designed, inexpensive fast primes for DX format DSLRs, and we hope they - and other companies - continue with this trend. As it is the 35mm F1.8G DX is, for its winning combination of high image quality, large maximum aperture and low price, a lens which deserves to be on many a Nikon shooter's shopping list.

User questions & answers

Question: when shooting at 1:1 does the built in flash get blocked by the lens
Answer: If you do not use the lens hood it shouldn't be a problem. If you do,you should use an exterior flash. I use an SB800 but that's personal preference. While the built in flash is handy it makes the photos' seem flat. However at times its better than the alternative
Question: is this lens make in china or Japan
Answer: Used to be made in Japan now made in China. Best to get a old one off of eBay if you want a Japanese made one. That is what I did
Question: Is this lens good for taking portraits? Is there a difference between taking portraits with macro and a dedicated 105mm lens
Answer: Hi Chandana,I own the 85mm 1.8G and 105mm 2.8G Macro for different purposes. The 105mm 2.8G is a great lens for product photography and for some portraits however for portrait shots, I shy away just because it is too sharp. From my perspective, the image is crisp but it does not look natural in my eyes. It looks somewhat Artificial just because it is optimized for close up macro. Thats why I use the 85mm instead which looks really natural. This will really depend on the person. People have different perspective. hope it helps :)
Question: Does this maintain it's 2.8 across magnification range
Answer: Before you read the data spec answers, consider that Macro is not the same as your normal understanding of a 2.8 aperture. The challenge with this lens is actually that the DOF is SO RAZOR THIN that it's hard to get anything in focus...even at F11 (yes, eleven!!). It's totally different than what you think of a standard lens at F/1.4... when you're shooting objects that are just 6 inches away from the front of this lens, the maximum F4.0 aperture is almost impossible to use without getting a blurry photo...it is so thin that you will be frustrated getting focus right just because you can't stop your own heartbeat from slightly moving your body forward/backward, or worse if the wind even barely blows to move something out of the RAZOR THIN DOF. I shoot this lens at F8 when I want to completely blur everything behind the subject and F16 when I want to ensure tricky situations (wind, I'm reach and it's hard to hold myself still) get AT LEAST SOMETHING in focus. It's not the same as a what you're used to with a standard DOF...that's not an insult, it's an education. I personally did not know this and found shooting macro to be VERY challenging to get anything actually IN FOCUS at even F11. Hope that's helpful, now read on as everyone gives you data specs below...

Capture Every Detail Shoot Tack-Sharp Portraits Every Time

Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior color consistency and reduced flare, while the AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G's Aspherical Lens Element (AS) virtually eliminates coma and other types of aberrations, even when shooting at the widest available aperture.

Question: Anyone used this lens in an indoor basketball game? Wondering if it focus fast enough, especially comparing to the F mount equivalence
Answer: David, The Canon version does not have the focus confirmation chip like the Nikon version. Only the Samyang 35mm has a Canon version with a confirmation chip. It is a nice feature when you are going through manual focus to get the beep or red dot indicating focus or highest contrast. I hope this helps and don't mean to give you information you already know.
Question: Where is it made
Answer: It's great for long exposures. I used at night to capture Aurora and galactic core with very long exposures. For day time I used the ND filter. Haida has ND filters and holder to work with this lens. Excellent lens.
Question: Is this an usa model camera with a usa warranty or this is a gray market camera
Answer: I use Fotodiox Pro. Filter Adapter Kit (145mm) with Circular Polarizing Filter on this lens, works fine.http://fotodioxpro.com/index.php/wonderpana-145-essentials-kit-system-holder-lens-cap-and-cpl-filter.html
Question: Does this come with the USA warranty
Answer: I am using it with Nikon D750, and Aperture can be controlled with command dial with F2.8, 3.2, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.6 -- upto F22!. It even has Focus confirmation thru view finder and Live View.
