Answer: | Build quality is better on the new model, and the STM focus is better for video. IQ for stills is about the same, with the new STM model having a little better color and less aberrations at wide open apertures. So if you don't have either, get the STM model. IF you have the older molder, then it is only worth the upgrade if you plan to do a lot of video. Answer: | You will have a much better lens. The optical quality of the 50mm is much better than your kit lens. There will be next to zero geometric aberration (straight lines come out as curved with the 18-55), excellent low-light performance, and a much shallower depth of field (a much blurrier background to help your foreground stand out). Both the latter come from the faster lens - f/1.8 vs f/3.5, a full 2 stops.The only thing is that it is a fixed lens, so you cannot change your field of view. However, it's something you will get used to very soon. I started out with the 28-135mm USM, and basically stopped using it after I got the nifty fifty. |

Answer: | The D5100 only autofocuses with the latest AF-S lens, and also older professional AF-I lens. Briefly, AF-S lens have a built-in motor to drive the focusing mechanisms on the lens, whereas AF lens rely on the motor in the camera body (like the D90 or the D7000). Most traditional screw-drive AF lenses will not autofocus on the D5100, but will autofocus on the D90/D7000. Lens that say "AF-S," will autofocus with the d5100, and most lenses sold today for the D5100 are AF-S. The D5100 has no internal autofocus motor, so it will not autofocus with original-style screw-drive AF lenses. This is why some lens will autofocus with the D5100, and some won't. |

Answer: | If you do not use the lens hood it shouldn't be a problem. If you do,you should use an exterior flash. I use an SB800 but that's personal preference.While the built in flash is handy it makes the photos' seem flat.However at times its better than the alternative |

Answer: | Hi Chandana,I own the 85mm 1.8G and 105mm 2.8G Macro for different purposes. The 105mm 2.8G is a great lens for product photography and for some portraits however for portrait shots, I shy away just because it is too sharp. From my perspective, the image is crisp but it does not look natural in my eyes. It looks somewhat Artificial just because it is optimized for close up macro. Thats why I use the 85mm instead which looks really natural. This will really depend on the person. People have different perspective. hope it helps :) |

Answer: | Before you read the data spec answers, consider that Macro is not the same as your normal understanding of a 2.8 aperture. The challenge with this lens is actually that the DOF is SO RAZOR THIN that it's hard to get anything in focus...even at F11 (yes, eleven!!). It's totally different than what you think of a standard lens at F/1.4... when you're shooting objects that are just 6 inches away from the front of this lens, the maximum F4.0 aperture is almost impossible to use without getting a blurry photo...it is so thin that you will be frustrated getting focus right just because you can't stop your own heartbeat from slightly moving your body forward/backward, or worse if the wind even barely blows to move something out of the RAZOR THIN DOF. I shoot this lens at F8 when I want to completely blur everything behind the subject and F16 when I want to ensure tricky situations (wind, I'm reach and it's hard to hold myself still) get AT LEAST SOMETHING in focus. It's not the same as a what you're used to with a standard DOF...that's not an insult, it's an education. I personally did not know this and found shooting macro to be VERY challenging to get anything actually IN FOCUS at even F11. However, if I were you, I would either look for other options or revisit this lens after switching to a full-frame camera. Someone has tried this in the past and found that 1) it will not autofocus 2) it will not read the proper aperture setting 3) ISO settings are calculated all wrong because of items 1 and 2. Answer: | I love this lens, Ive said it in my review, this is the best value 100mm fast macro lens period, good for portrait, general images and off course Macro, however I am more a portrait photog than a Macro enthusiast, having said that, this is a wonderful macro lens. Auto focus is a bit slower than the Canon 100 L f2.8 IS and does not have Image Stabilization but this lens is sharper than the Canon 100 f2.8 USM and probably as sharp as the "L" version. If you intend to shoot insects hand held, the Canon L is the better lens but you pay he price for the USM AF and IS, but if you can somewhat have a more controlled environment I would get this lens. Either way to shoot insects you need flash and more deep of field and probably a tripod (f8 to f16 is not uncommon as you might be very close to your subject). In general the true Nature Macro photographer would go for a 180mm on a full frame (this Tokina lens will give you a 150mm field of view on a Crop Sensor camera) , but if you are looking for a 100mm macro in a value price range lens this will not disappoint in my opinion. good luck |

Answer: | The Canon "18-135" IS STM is a OK to Good lens for Video because of the STM. But for Stills it is just OK. There's not a perfect lens out there. I don't buy kit lenses, cause for a little more $$ you get better lenses. BUT, you have to ask yourself, will you change lenses back and forth ? From long zooms/telephoto primes and back to short/medium zooms or primes ? OR, do you like leaving one lens on, or you just don't have a bunch of lenses to switch back & forth. The Sigma starts at 17mm the Canon at 18mm both have barrel distortion, but from 24mm to 70mm, yes the Sigma is better than the Canon, but the Canon has a longer reach to 135mm. DXO Labs has this new Sigma 17-70 Contemporary lens at almost the same numbers/performance as the $1100 Canon 17-55 f/2.8 ! That's how good this lens is. BUT, how well they do on Video Dslr cameras, I don't know ? Hope this helps. |

The problem I have with video is that the zoom ring on the lens is so stiff that if I try to zoom in or out while filming a video, it is sometimes enough stress on the camera/lens connection that the lens briefly disconnects from the camera's sensor/electronics, and "live mode" is canceled, ending the video. I have to be careful to hold the base of the lens if I want to zoom in or out while filming. |

The B001 model of this lens is older and will likely work fine on the older bodies. |
