9 best macro lens for sonies
Macro lenses for Sony cameras are specialized lenses designed for close-up photography, allowing you to capture detailed and magnified images of small subjects, such as insects, flowers, or small objects. Here's what you should know about macro lenses for Sony cameras:
Macro Photography: Macro lenses are primarily used for macro photography, which involves capturing subjects at a 1:1 magnification ratio or higher. This means that the subject is captured at life-size or even larger on the camera's image sensor.
Focal Length: Macro lenses come in various focal lengths, such as 30mm, 50mm, 90mm, or 100mm. The choice of focal length depends on your specific needs and shooting style. Longer focal lengths (e.g., 90mm or 100mm) allow for greater working distance from the subject, which can be advantageous for photographing skittish or fragile subjects.
Image Quality: High-quality macro lenses are designed to provide sharp and detailed images even at close focusing distances. They often have special lens elements and coatings to minimize aberrations and ensure superior image quality.
Aperture: Many macro lenses have wide maximum apertures, such as f/2.8 or f/2.0. A wider aperture allows for better background blur (bokeh) and can be useful for isolating your subject from the background.
Autofocus: Some macro lenses offer autofocus capabilities, while others are manual focus only. For precise macro work, many photographers prefer manual focus to have full control over the focusing process.
Image Stabilization: Some macro lenses come equipped with image stabilization (IS) or vibration reduction (VR) technology, which can be helpful when shooting handheld at close distances where even slight movements can cause blurriness.
Compatibility: Ensure that the macro lens you choose is compatible with your specific Sony camera model. Sony offers a range of E-mount lenses designed for their mirrorless cameras, but some may also work with Sony's A-mount DSLRs with the appropriate adapter.
Accessories: When using a macro lens, you may also need additional accessories like a tripod, external flash, or a macro focusing rail to achieve the best results, especially when working with highly detailed subjects.
Price Range: The cost of macro lenses can vary widely depending on factors such as brand, focal length, and features. Higher-end lenses with advanced optics and features tend to be more expensive.
Sample Images: You can often find sample images taken with specific macro lenses online to get a sense of their image quality and performance before making a purchase.
Macro lenses for Sony cameras open up a world of creative possibilities for close-up photography. Whether you're interested in capturing the intricate details of nature or exploring the world of small objects, a macro lens can be a valuable addition to your photography gear.

FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS Full-frame E-mount Macro Lens
The full-frame 90mm medium telephoto macro E-mount lens features built in image stabilization for sharp, clear images at up to 1:1 magnification, even when shooting handheld. Advanced optics and coatings with a 9-blade circular aperture deliver exceptionally smooth bokeh that G Lenses are renowned for. Sharp in-focus rendering is achieved with a floating focus mechanism that suppresses aberration equally at all focusing distances, whether the subject is far away or extremely close. Other advanced technologies, such as the Nano AR Coating and Super ED (extra-low dispersion) glass, elevate overall performance to an extremely high standard.
Nano AR Coating
Effectively suppress reflections that can cause flare and ghosting with Sony’s original Nano AR Coating technology. This precisely defined regular nano-structure allows accurate light transmission, contributing to high-quality images, even more so than lenses with coatings that use an irregular nano-structure. The reflection suppression characteristic of the Nano AR Coating is superior to conventional anti-reflective coatings, providing a notable improvement in clarity, contrast, and overall image quality.
Circular Aperture
When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.
Aspherical lens elements
Aspherical lens design dramatically reduces spherical aberration while also reducing lens size and weight. Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected on the image plane. This is caused by differences in refraction at different points on conventional spherical lenses which degrade image quality in large-aperture lenses. Specially shaped “aspherical” elements near the diaphragm restore alignment of light rays at the image plane, maintaining high sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture and can also be used at other points in the optical path to reduce distortion. Well-designed aspherical elements can reduce the total number of elements required in the lens, thus reducing overall size and weight.
Internal focusing
Only the middle groups of the optical system move to achieve focus, so the overall length of the lens does not change. Other important benefits include fast autofocusing and a short minimum focusing distance. Also, the filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient if you’re using a polarizing filter.
Lens-based optical image stabilization
Gyro sensors built into the lens detect even the slightest movement, and the stabilization lens is precisely shifted to counteract any image blur that might occur. The use of precision, quiet linear motors and technology inherited from high-end Sony professional camcorders results in exceptionally quiet, effective image stabilization that contributes to high-quality movies as well as stills.
Direct Drive SSM (DDSSM) for quiet, precise focusing
Quiet, precise DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) focus drive - employs piezoelectric elements oscillating at ultrasonic frequencies to drive the focus lens groups. In this case two floating focus groups are driven by independent DDSSM systems for precision positioning of the relatively heavy lenses required for macro photography. The DDSSM drive system is remarkably quiet, making it ideal for animal and insect photography, as well as for movies. It also improves the precision of “focus wobble” employed to achieve optimum focus when shooting movies.
Focus hold button
Once you’ve adjusted focus to where you want it, pressing this button on the lens barrel will keep the lens locked to that focusing distance. The preview function can also be assigned to this button through the camera’s custom settings.
Focus range limiter
This function allows you to set a limit on the focusing range which can save you time during AF operation as the lens will not ‘hunt’ through the entire focusing range. In macro lenses, this limit can be on either the near or far range (as pictured). In the SEL90M28G, the limit is set on far ranges only.
Sliding Focus Ring
The focus ring slides back and forth to select manual or auto focus which together with a focus hold button, inner focus, and a focus range limiter provide optimum control for macro photography making it easier to shoot insects and other subjects that cannot be approached too closely. Minimal focus breathing and quiet operation are also advantageous for shooting movies.

Product description
Previously funded in Kickstarter and ranked 2nd in the all-time most funded lens project, The Laowa 24mm f/14 2x Probe from Venus Optics is the world’s first consumer-grade probe lens which focuses from 2:1 macro to infinity and with a compelling wide angle ‘Bug Eye’ perspective. This Sony FE mount can cover both standard 35mm full frame and Super35 image sensors and is super lightweight to carry. The wide angle design means much greater depth of field at close distances than possible with conventional telephoto macro lens, so more background details can now be seen. The front barrel of the lens is waterproof and an LED ring light is mounted at the tip of the lens. The lens includes a white USB cable dimmer (with power adjustment), black USB cable (no power adjustment), lens bag and metal case. The built-in LED light is powered by an external battery (sold separately).
Deep Depth of Field
The wide angle design also means much greater depth of field at close distances (compared to the telephoto macro lens) so that more background details can now be seen. Being able to focus so close but still have deep depth of field is a big advantage for both studio and wildlife photography.
Long Tubular Lens Barrel
For traditional macro lenses, you need to get really close to your subject in order to take a good macro shot. But some areas are just simply inaccessible. Thanks to the 15.7 inches (40 cm) long barrel, you can focus really close to the subject but still keep yourself and your camera a reasonable distance away. This feature is super useful and makes your macro shooting so much easier. From a filmmaking perspective, the Tubular Lens barrel also allows shooting a lot of “slide in” shots through tiny areas.
- FULL FRAME COVERAGE: The Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe can cover both the standard 35mm full frame and Super35 image sensors
- DEEP DEPTH OF FIELD: The wide angle design also means much greater depth of field at close distances (compared to the telephoto macro lens) so that more background details can now be seen. Being able to focus so close but still have deep depth of field is a big advantage for both studio and wildlife photography

Thanks to the 15.7 inches (40 cm) long barrel, you can focus really close to the subject but still keep yourself and your camera a reasonable distance away
- LED RING LIGHT: Macro photography is about Depth of Field and smaller apertures are usually required. An LED ring light (powered by an optional external battery) is embedded in the lens tip to provide additional lighting for focus assistance
- LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN: Despite the long tubular design, the Laowa probe is actually super light and easy to carry. It weighs only 1.04 pounds

Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra-Macro APO lens Followed by the success of the Laowa 60mm f/2.8 2:1 Macro, the 100mm f/2.8 2:1 Macro is the 2nd member of Laowa 2:1 macro line-up. This new 100mm lens can cover full frame sensor and focus from 2:1 magnification to infinity. 100mm is a more popular focal length for macro photographers. However, all of the current 100mm macro lenses in the market can only achieve 1:1 (life-size) or even smaller magnification. Shooting with smaller bugs is usually a challenge for macro photographers. The wider magnification range of the new Laowa Macro allows photographers to capture subjects at any size, making it one of the most versatile macro lens in the market. Despite having the wider range, Venus Optics manage to compress the size of the lens to the minimal and it is similar to other 1:1 macro lens in the market. Laowa 100mm 2:1 Macro lens also features an apochromatic (APO) characteristic that chromatic aberration is invisible. Chromatic aberration (CA) is one of the most challenging topic for optics designer as it can usually ruin a perfect image. Some of the macro lenses in the market controls the chromatic aberration at the "in-focus" area really well but the CA is uncontrollable in "out-of-focus" rendition. The Laowa 100mm, however, delivers an exceptional performance on chromatic aberration suppression, both at the "in-focus" area as well as "out-of-focus" area. The subject in the image will not b

Bug Eye Perspecitve Macro lenses in the market tend to have a long focal length (from 60mm to 120mm) and the subject fills most of the frame, isolating it from the surrounding environment. Our Laowa 24mm, instead, allows you to focus really close (2cm @ 2:1) to the subject, showing a great amount of detail and texture. But at the same time, you can enjoy a compelling wide angle "Bug Eye' view (84.1°) " so that more background details can then be included in the shots. You can easily create a very informative and stunning macro bug-eye perspective that no other lenses can do. The fact that it can focus really close to the subject enables a lot of shooting possibility. 2:1 Macro to Infinity Focus As macro photographers ourselves, we usually face the problem of not being able to shoot smaller subjects. With our Laowa probe, you can now take advantage of the 2:1 maximum magnification to shoot really small bugs and reveal detail

Question: | Will this work on Sony A7 without going into crop mode |
Answer: | Yes, but the Steadyshot function cannot be used. - Glenn |
Question: | I would like to verify that this lens is compatible with the Sony A6000 - and no adapter needed? Thank you |
Answer: | Auto will work fine, but as you gain experience you will want to explore the other settings on your camera. I like to use A, aperture priority, to control the depth of field of my pictures, so I can get 1 flower in focus and the rest blurred a bit. Also in auto you will have to settle on what the camera decides should be in focus. By using the different focusing modes of your camera you get to pick where and on what is to be the focus of your picture. There are a number of good sources especially of information on macro photography including YouTube, photographer blogs, and texts. While not the ultimate in macro lens I have enjoy using this lens and the pictures it can produce |
Question: | Is this lens compatible with the Sony A |
Answer: | Although it's a 28mm lens, the DX sensor of the "M-series" bodies has a 1.6 crop factor, giving the lens the same angle of view as a 45mm lens on a full-frame or film camera. Barely wider than the traditional "normal" of 50mm, though you'll have the depth-of-field of a 28mm. |
Question: | I am a beginner trying to shoot wildflowers in the sun. Any suggestions for camera settings - or will auto setting work with this lens? Thank you |
Answer: | It works ok. But it's 35 mm equivalent is about 45mm which is not the best for portrait photography. |
