The Apple Book
After World War I, it was realized that English orchards grew a mixture of cultivars and that apple breeding was rather indiscriminate, making commercial growing unnecessarily difficult. In October 1922, after discussions with the Ministry of Agriculture, the RHS set in motion the establishment of the first ever commercial fruit trials. The purpose was to carry out impartial trials of the value of cultivars and to inform growers of the new introductions and the susceptibility of cultivars to disease. National fruit trials were establised at Wisley. After Word War II they became part of the National Agricultural Advisory Service and moved to Brogdale Farm near Faversham in Kent. The transfer was completed in 1960.
Today the majority of top cultivars come from the professional plant breeders and research stations abroad. The whole business has been put on a very professional footing but, although the results are excellent, the romance has gone. Apples are no longer named after characters such as the much loved Reverend W Wilks, William Crump, or Lady Sudeley.
But there are encouraging signs that we are seeing a revival of the interest in apples. There does seem to be a healthy interest in all aspects of home produce however, whether it is in allotments, community orchards, or farmer’s markets. I hope that this book may play a part in this renaissance.
The Identification of Apples
The eye is the only part of the flower remaining after the fruit has been formed. After the petals drop the fruit develops and when mature the five sepals take up one of six distinct forms.
Erect convergent in which the sepals are standing upright with their margins touching and their points meeting together at a common point.
Erect in which the sepals are standing upright but not meeting together.
Connivent in which the sepals are standing upright with their points meeting together but overlapping each other.
Flat convergent in which the sepals lie flat with their points facing inwards and their margins touching.
Divergent in which the sepals are quite reflexed and fall back on to the basin. The eye can be open, partly open or closed.
Reflexed tips The tips of the sepals can be bent outwards away from the eye.
The Plates
Miller’s Seedling is a second early dessert apple raised in 1848 by James Miller, a nurseryman from Newbury, Berkshire (UK). Season late August and early September. It used to be widely grown for the markets and had a very high reputation in Berkshire. It received the Award of Merit from the RHS in 1906. They are easily bruised. They have a distinctive though not strong flavour being sweetly tangy and slightly scented. They are pleasant and refreshing with white fine-textured flesh which has a tinge of pink when fully ripe. The flesh is soft but crisp and very juicy.
Growing Apples
When the fruit is ready it leaves the spur easily. Lift the apple in the palm of the hand and give it a slight twist when it should part without undue effort. Avoid any finger pressure as this will bruise and spoil the appearance of the fruits. For the same reason, at all times treat the apples gently. Bruised fruits will not keep. Other indications that the harvest is nigh are that the fruits take on brighter colours, and the pips turn from white to brown.
Windfalls on the ground are another indication that they are ready, gales aside of course. Do not pick all the fruit at once, but practise colour picking, which means picking over a number of times, starting with those exposed to the most sun, leaving the inside fruits to the last so that they may eventually colour up.
Classification Table
An early to mid August dessert apple raised in 1923 in Essex (UK) by Mr. George Cave of Dovercourt, and said to be a chance seedling. It was acquired by Messrs Seabrook & Sons Ltd of Boreham, Essex but not named until 1945. The tree is fairly hardy, uprightspreading in habit, spur bearing and of moderate vigour. The cropping is good though the fruit quickly drops. Picking time early to mid August. The fruits have no particular distinction: they are crisp, juicy and rather acid and the skin is a little tough. They are slightly sweetly aromatic. The flesh is creamy-white, sometimes tinged green under the skin, slightly soft, fine-textured and juicy.

The first addition to the Art category in Sigma’s Global Vision, the 35mm 1.4 DG HSM includes new features based around a unique lens concept and design.
