11 best dx lenses

DX lenses are a type of camera lens primarily designed for use with digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras. These lenses are commonly associated with Nikon DSLR cameras, although other manufacturers may use similar designations with slight variations. Here's what you need to know about DX lenses:

  1. Compatibility: DX lenses are designed specifically for cameras with APS-C or DX-sized image sensors. These sensors are smaller than full-frame sensors and are commonly found in entry-level and mid-range DSLR cameras. DX lenses are optimized to project an image circle that covers the smaller sensor size.

  2. Crop Factor: DX cameras have a crop factor (also known as a focal length multiplier) compared to full-frame cameras. Typically, the crop factor for DX cameras is around 1.5x for Nikon. This means that a DX lens with a certain focal length will provide a field of view equivalent to a longer focal length on a full-frame camera.

  3. Advantages of DX Lenses:

    • Compact and Lightweight: DX lenses are often smaller and lighter than their full-frame counterparts, making them more portable and convenient for everyday use.
    • Cost-Effective: DX lenses tend to be more affordable than equivalent full-frame lenses, making them an attractive option for photographers on a budget.
    • Well-Suited for Crop-Sensor Cameras: DX lenses are optimized for cameras with smaller sensors, ensuring that they provide excellent image quality within the confines of the sensor size.
  4. Limitations:

    • Limited Use on Full-Frame Cameras: DX lenses are not designed to cover the larger image sensors of full-frame cameras. If used on a full-frame camera, they will result in vignetting (dark corners) in the images.
    • Focal Length Consideration: While the crop factor can provide added reach for telephoto lenses, it may limit the field of view for wide-angle lenses, which may not be suitable for some types of photography.
  5. Common DX Lenses: Nikon, for example, offers a range of DX lenses, including wide-angle, standard zoom, telephoto, and macro lenses, tailored to the needs of DX camera users. Other camera manufacturers may have similar lens options.

  6. Lens Mount: DX lenses typically use the same lens mount as full-frame lenses of the same brand, such as Nikon F-mount. This means that DX lenses are compatible with both DX and full-frame camera bodies of the same brand, but with the limitations mentioned earlier.

In summary, DX lenses are a category of camera lenses specifically designed for cameras with APS-C or DX-sized sensors, such as Nikon DX-format DSLR cameras. They offer advantages such as affordability, compactness, and compatibility with DX cameras, but they have limitations when used on full-frame cameras due to their smaller image circle. When choosing lenses for your camera, it's essential to consider the sensor size and your photography needs to ensure compatibility and optimal performance.

User questions & answers

Question: Will it autofocus on D
Answer: I have the D5100... I would only be assuming it would focus on the d5300.
Question: Will the autofocus work on 50mm f/1.8G AF-S Nikkor lens for the D
Answer: Yes, the auto-focus will work. But remember this is an FX lens. Your DX D3200 camera will register it as a 75mm lens rather than a 50mm lens.
Question: Could you comment on the merits of 50mm F 1.8 vs. 85 mm F 1.8 for portrait photography much of which will just be shot in the home on a D
Answer: Either lense is fine for portrait use though, but I prefer to keep portraits to around 50-85mm so on my aps-c sensor body it left me with one choice. A fx lens on a dx body has a focal length of 1.5x the rating. So a 50mm on a D7100 comes out to a 75mm, and the 85mm lens acts like a 127.rmm lens. For this reason I chose the 50mm F1.8 lens. It has nice bokeh and since the length isn't too long the portrait image still has some depth and isn't flattened.
Question: nikon 50mm f/1.8g vs. nikon 50mm f/1.4g... which one
Answer: Get the 1.8 and use the difference to buy the 35 1.8g dx

Your DSLR’s Best Friend

A must-have for standard portraits and everyday use, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G is a lens that will absolutely surprise you. The 50mm focal length (75mm equivalent on DX format cameras) with a fast f/1.8 aperture allows you to capture stunning images with a shallow depth-of-field, letting your subjects stand out from their backgrounds. The AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G may soon become your new favorite lens.

Brilliance In Any Light Get Astonishing Low Light Results

This lightweight standard lens is a great travel companion because you never know when a beautiful, sunny day will turn cloudy and rainy. With its fast f/1.8 aperture, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G will capture even low-light situations with stunning brilliance.

Beautiful Background Blur Achieve More Natural Depth Of Field

Whether you're shooting portraits, food or nature—indoors or outdoors—the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G renders a beautiful, natural background blur (Bokeh) at its wider aperture settings. And its 50mm focal length is perfect for creating natural perspective in your photographs.

Capture Every Detail Shoot Tack-Sharp Portraits Every Time

Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior color consistency and reduced flare, while the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G's Aspherical Lens Element (AS) virtually eliminates coma and other types of aberrations, even when shooting at the widest available aperture. Pair that with Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for fast, accurate and quiet autofocus, and you can be sure all of your portraits will be tack sharp.

Silent Wave Motor

AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM). This technology converts 'traveling waves' into rotational energy to focus the optics. This enables high-speed autofocusing that's extremely accurate and super quiet.

M/A

Select NIKKOR lenses have a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens. This makes it possible to seamlessly switch to fine manual focusing while looking through the viewfinder.

Aspherical Lens

A lens with a curved, non-spherical surface. Used to reduce aberrations and enable a more compact lens size. Aspherical lenses minimize coma and other types of lens aberrations, even when used at the widest aperture. They are particularly useful in correcting distortion in wide-angle lenses and help contribute to a lighter, more compact design by reducing the number of standard (spherical) elements necessary. Aspherical lens elements correct these distortions by continuously changing the refractive index from the center of the lens.

Super Integrated Coating

Nikon Super Integrated Coating is Nikon's term for its multilayer coating of the optical elements in NIKKOR lenses.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work on the Nikon D
Answer: Yes it does Regards Steve 1-800-221-2253
Question: will this work on a 80D
Answer: It should work on an 80D. It works on the t3i I use the lens on.
Question: will this work for canon 6d
Answer: I just saw that the seller responded that it will... But it does not. While it will technically fit the lens mount, the image will be cut off at the corners at the widest end of this lens, as it is designed for APS-C (cropped) sensors. The Canon 6D is a full-frame sensor body (the sensor is larger) so to avoid corners that are cropped off you should select a lens that is designed for full frame. I use this one with my Canon 6D - it's excellent: Tokina AT-X Pro FX 16-28mm f/2.8 For Canon - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003V1YGT6/
Question: Is it full frame lens
Answer: No it is crop sensor only. But it will fit on a full frame mount with a heavy vignette.

User questions & answers

Question: is this lense good for macro photos
Answer: Yes, the lens does very good macro photos, to get 1:1 aspect the distance is about 6 inches, I also recomend tu use a flash ring to avoid thshadows in some shots. The lens is great, works very good on macro and casual shooting with a very good f2.8 stop.
Question: Is this lens a wide angle lens? I guess I just might be confused on what that term "wide angle" actually refers to
Answer: No, it's not a wide angle lens, it's a close-up lens. It's an excellent prime lens that I use routinely but it has the bonus capability of getting in very very close. There have been situations that I have had the thing I was shooting under the lens hood, it gets that close. It's my favorite utility lens and use it on my D7000 as well as my D600.
Question: is this good for close ups
Answer: Yes, I like to use manual focus, sometimes I use aperture priority mode to change the depth of field. This week I've gotten some good clear pictures of honey bees on flowers.
Question: I want to shoot jewelry. w the 100mm Macro I have now, the depth of field if such that only part of a ring will be in focus. Will this lens help
Answer: Greetings, close up photography has been my preference for 35 years. I've used everything from point &shoot's to medium format cameras. From Leica, to Konica. Nikon, being my preference. So, I'd like to try to help you with this question, as I've photographed a lot of jewelry, for Estates. 100 mm, is pretty long, for getting really close. The 1:1 (life size) factor, although true doesn't mean distance is moot. Keep in mind, any dedicated "micro" (macro) lens, has a very short depth of field. Unlike say a prime 50 mm, where depth of field is based on the f stop, with a dedicated micro, you only have a single stop. So, depth of field, remains very short. Now, for the best lens to shoot very close jewelry. The shorter the focal length, the better. My favorite is in the 50 mm or shorter, depending on what camera I'm using. Not all brands, offer the same focal length in micro lenses. Nikon's long time AF 60 mm 2.8, later AFD 60, and today's 40 mm G series (G for APC forma) all work well when you want to get very close. Photographing jewelry is always a challenge. Lighting is diffacult, controlling reflection, and motion need to be considered. Jewelry, requires a very steady rest. Tripod, or otherwise. If your camera has a mirror lock up, that helps also. Best wishes. Michael T.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the Auto Focus work on the D5100? I have read one site that it does not
Answer: It works great for me. My guess is that someone got a lemon, and I'm sure they do exist. You can see photos I took with my D5100 at http://idaholyoaks4.blogspot.com/. There are lots of shots there I took with my D5100, as well as some I took with older cameras.
Question: Will this lens autofocus with the D
Answer: Will this lens autofocus with the D5200?
Question: Will this lens autofocus with the D3100? I just had to return the 70-300mm Nikon lens because the autofocus wasn't compatible with the camera
Answer: Any AF-S lens should work with your camera. This is due to the fact that AF-S lenses have a built-in motor. Since your camera has no motor, it requires these lenses for auto focus. Your 70-300 lens must not have been an AF-S.
Question: I got a Nikon D40 ..what xx to 300 mm lense would be good...Nikor or Tamron
Answer: It really depends on what subjects you will be shooting, how much you will use it and what your budget is. The Nikon (NIKKOR) lenses are more ruggedly built than similar products from Tamron or Sigma. Optically, I think that the Tamron would be a good lens, just not as durable. I have shot with Nikons since 1973 and have only ever bought NIKKOR lenses. I use my cameras and lenses every day, so they see a lot of use and, inevitably, a certain amount of abuse--shooting in rain, snow, bumps, scrapes, etc. If you only use your D40 once every 2 or 3 weeks, the Tamron will probably fill your need. As to subject, I think you will find the 300mm lens to be too long for sports. I have both the 18-200mm DX NIKKOR and the 70-200 FX NIKKOR lenses and they are plenty long for field sports. If you shoot wildlife, you will appreciate the 300mm lens, and you might even want to add a teleconverter to it for longer reach. On the shorter end, if you already have the 18-55mm zoom, the 55-300 will fit right in. The NIKKOR 55-300mm sells for under $400, bearing in mind that it is a DX format lens, which is fine for the D40. If you think you might eventually upgrade your camera body, take a look at the NIKKOR 70-300mm lens. It is an FX format lens, which will work on any Nikon body, is the same aperture as the 55-300 and is only about $190 more than the NIKKOR 55-300mm. All of the lenses I am suggesting have Nikon's Vibration Ruduction (VR) built in which is good for 2-4 f/stops slower shutter speed when hand holding the lens. If you know that you will only be using a tripod for very long focal lengths Nikon does have an FX 70-300mm f/4-5.6 that sells for about $160. Caution, do not try to handhold that lens at 300mm at shutter speeds below 1/250 second, but that's what we all used to do. Still, I highly recommend the Vibration Reduction Lenses.
