5 best refractor telescope for dslr

A refractor telescope for DSLR (Digital Single-Lens Reflex) cameras is a specialized type of telescope designed to allow astrophotography enthusiasts to capture images of celestial objects using their DSLR cameras. Here are the key points to know about these telescopes:

  1. Optical Design: Refractor telescopes use lenses to gather and focus light. They are different from reflector telescopes, which use mirrors. Refractors have a lens at the front (objective lens) and another lens near the eyepiece (eyepiece lens).

  2. Aperture: The aperture of a refractor telescope determines its light-gathering ability. A larger aperture allows more light to enter the telescope, which can result in brighter and more detailed images of celestial objects.

  3. Focal Length: Refractor telescopes come in various focal lengths. Longer focal lengths provide higher magnification, while shorter focal lengths are better for wide-field views. The choice of focal length depends on the type of astrophotography you want to pursue.

  4. Mounting: These telescopes are typically mounted on equatorial mounts or alt-azimuth mounts. Equatorial mounts are often preferred for astrophotography because they can track the motion of celestial objects as the Earth rotates, allowing for longer exposure times.

  5. Adapter for DSLR: To use a DSLR camera with a refractor telescope, you'll need a T-adapter or a prime focus adapter. This accessory connects your camera to the telescope's focuser, replacing the eyepiece.

  6. Camera Compatibility: Ensure that the refractor telescope you choose is compatible with your DSLR camera.Different cameras may have varying sizes and types of mounts, so adapters may be necessary.

  7. Autoguiding: Some advanced refractor telescopes for astrophotography come with autoguiding capabilities. Autoguiding involves using a separate guide camera to keep the telescope precisely aligned with the target object for longer exposures.

  8. Accessories: Many astrophotographers use additional accessories like field flatteners or focal reducers to correct optical aberrations and improve image quality. Filters can also be used to enhance specific details in astrophotography.

  9. Transportability: Refractor telescopes are often compact and lightweight, making them relatively easy to transport to dark sky locations for better viewing and imaging conditions.

  10. Cost: The cost of refractor telescopes for DSLR astrophotography can vary significantly depending on factors like the aperture size, the quality of the optics, and additional features. Entry-level models are available for beginners, while more advanced setups can be quite expensive.

  11. Image Stacking and Processing: To obtain high-quality astrophotographs, it's common to capture multiple images and then stack and process them using specialized software to reduce noise and enhance details.

In summary, a refractor telescope for DSLR astrophotography is a valuable tool for capturing stunning images of celestial objects. The choice of telescope should be based on your specific astrophotography goals, budget, and the type of celestial objects you want to capture. Proper mounting, camera compatibility, and accessories play important roles in achieving successful astrophotography results.

Astromania 1.25" Extendable Camera Adapter - for Either Prime-focus Or Eyepiece-projection Astrophotography with Refractors or Reflector Telescopes

  • The Astromania 1.25" Variable Universal Camera Adapters allow attachment of a camera body to reflector and refractor telescopes for either prime-focus or telescope eyepiece-projection photography.
  • The adapter's 1.25" nosepiece slides into the telescope's eyepiece holder just like an eyepiece. This Variable Universal Camera Adapter is composed of two detachable parts: a prime-focus adapter (or "T-adapter") for prime-focus photography, and a fixed-length or variable extension tube for eyepiece-projection photography.
  • A thumbscrew in the extension tube holds the telescope eyepiece in place. This combination of prime-focus and eyepiece-projection camera adapter has a sliding barrel design that allows variable projection distances. This allows for slight changes in magnification without swapping telescope eyepieces when performing eyepiece-projection photography.
  • Fits reflector and refractor telescopes with 1.25" eyepiece holders. The Variable Projection Camera Adapter allows for a continuous range of projection magnifications during eyepiece-projection photography for telescopes with a 1.25" focuser.
  • The machined sliding-cell assembly can be fixed at any position along its length and is held in position via a thumbscrew. The resulting effective focal ratio is then determined by the sliding adjustment and eyepiece used. A T-ring specific to your D/SLR camera is required to connect your camera to this adapter (not included).

User questions & answers

Question: I'm a beginner in telescope and i have a telescope thats a 137EQ. This one here is 70EQ. What does the EQ mean
Answer: No. I returned the one I bought. I couldn’t see 5.56 hole at less than 100 yards
Question: Which eyepiece(s) are you using to view planets? I am trying to view Jupiter and Venus, but all I see are bright blurry circles? Thanks
Answer: The “frame” is more “platform” and it is best described as black. The frame they are referring to is the adjustable base that lifts the mattress. The fabric that covers the frame is black with black/very dark charcoal gray trim. The plastic legs of the frame are also black. As far as I know, there is no white option.
Question: I want to buy this telescope as a gift. I also plan to buy the camera to go with it. what other accessories should I get? Is there a computer disk etc
Answer: There are two on each side, on the side frame rail, under the head of the bead. No they cannot be moved.
Question: what eyepieces doe it come with
Answer: I did, but I purchased a Casa Blanc Bed Bridge Twin to King Mattress Converter Kit - Memory Foam Gap filler.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use another tripod I have a bigger sturdier and has wheels
Answer: Yes and you should! The tripod is the weakest link on this product. This isn't a mark against the company, as the tripod is often the weakest link in any optics set up. I am not sure why your tripod has wheels or how that would benefit, since orienting objects are easier to do using a stable base and the spotting scope attachment along an axis, but hey, follow your heart!
Question: How do you attach the cell phone holder? It is not even mentioned in the instructions
Answer: There is a part of the cell phone holder that twists. As you twist clockwise or counter clockwise the opening widens I order for the eyepiece to fit in it. Once you are able to fit the cellphone holder on the eye piece you tighten the twisting part to fasten the cellphone holder in place. I hope that helps.
Question: Does it can see the moon
Answer: Yes it can does see the moon.... Really it just magnifies the light that comes into your eyeball which your brain interprets as the moon.
Question: What all can you see with this telescope
Answer: The parking lot across the street was all ilI could ever see. It is absolutely trash. The company must be giving all these great reviews

User questions & answers

Question: can this scope be used as a spotting scope for bird watching
Answer: Excellent for bird-watching. At 20x, it's fine. At 40x (long distance) you may want a strudier tripod, and because it's daylight, you can look through the smaller 42mm hole (take off the little cap) in the dust cap and that will improve the sharpness at high power. If you want a better spotting scope, simply buy a fancy wide-angle/high-performance 1.25 eyepiece (super-plossl, etc), around 15 mm focal length.
Question: You say that any tripod that I use for photography should work. Does that mean that I can screw my tripod head into the telescope
Answer: Yes. As others have said, the tripod that comes with the telescope is reallllly flimsy. There are a couple of screw holes on the bottom of the telescope. I was able to attache the telescope to my other tripod using the detachable head on the tripod.
Question: I'm a real beginner/plan to purchase this for my son so we can both explore the night sky, etc. Is it really easy to setup?/How long will it take
Answer: The scope is really good for beginners and it is easy to set up. As others have said the the included tripod is small for portability and not very stable. If used fully "retracted" on the hood of a car for example, it's OK. I've used it with a Celestron 7.5MM eyepiece and a 2x barlow lens and it can still resolve the rings of Saturn on a clear night. It's not designed for that kind of magnification but for an inexpensive scope with simple lenses I was impressed. I wouldn't recommend trying that though until you have some practice on focus, finding objects in the sky, and purchasing a heavy duty camera tripod. You must remember even with the highest power eyepieces, which you only want to consider using for viewing planets, objects are really small which is due to it's 400mm focal length. Overall it's WAY better than spending 40-50 dollars on a cheap toy at the local discount store. Another good option comparable to this is the Orion 76mm Fun Scope. It's really only for table top use but it's easy to swivel up/down left/right. It is a reflector though and images don't appear as crisp in my opinion. You'll find out that half the quality of a telescope is how good the tripod or mounting set up is. For the price you can't go wrong with this scope. I own several telescopes from computer driven to large reflectors and still grab this for quick views of Orions belt, Jupiter, Saturn, the Moon, and star clusters like the double cluster and the Pleiades. Just to add to an already long answer, I added an inexpensive laser object finder (similar to the Celestron Star Finder) instead of the mostly useless viewfinder. It makes it ten times easier to point the scope at objects you're trying to look at and it doesn't take much modifications to get it screwed to the scope tube or stuck on with foam tape. Your son will thank you!
Question: can i see with my left eye
Answer: Only if you look at objects on the left....use right eye for objects on the right side....if its straight above you , you can use both eyes.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you attach a camera to this telescope
Answer: How do get info on camera attachment
Question: Is it infrared
Answer: Nope
Question: Is it equipped for astrophotography
Answer: You can't use this to take long astronomic exposures because the planet or nebula (or whatever) will move during the exposure. To take long exposures, you need two things: an equatorial mount and a clock drive. However, you can take great shots of the moon or other really bright object. The moon is so bright, a fast shutter speed works fine.
Question: Is this telescope easy to travel with
Answer: Not really. It needs a good size case for it. Plus I would not trust airport to cate for it. If in your car or RV it would fair much better.
