5 best beginner telescopes

Beginner telescopes are an excellent entry point for individuals interested in astronomy and stargazing. They come in various types, with refractor telescopes being one popular choice. Here's what you need to know about beginner telescopes:

  1. Refractor Telescopes: Refractor telescopes use lenses to gather and magnify light. They are known for their simplicity and low maintenance requirements. They're a great choice for beginners because they're easy to use and offer good image quality.

  2. Types of Refractor Telescopes:

    • Apochromatic (APO) Refractors: These refractors use specialized lenses to reduce chromatic aberration, resulting in high-quality, color-corrected images.
    • Achromatic Refractors: These are more affordable and commonly used by beginners. They may exhibit some chromatic aberration, which can be minimized with eyepiece selection.
  3. Telescope Mounts:

    • Altazimuth Mount: Easier to use for beginners, this mount moves the telescope up and down and left to right.
    • Equatorial Mount: Allows for tracking celestial objects as they move across the sky, making it useful for astrophotography.
  4. Aperture Size: The aperture diameter determines how much light a telescope can gather. Bigger apertures allow for better views of faint objects in the sky.

  5. Focal Length: Longer focal lengths provide higher magnification, which is useful for observing planets and the moon. Shorter focal lengths are better for wide-field views of star clusters and galaxies.

  6. Eyepieces: Telescopes often come with one or more eyepieces of varying focal lengths. Different eyepieces provide different levels of magnification. A beginner should have a range of eyepieces for versatility.

  7. Accessories: Some common accessories for beginners include star charts or planetarium software to help identify celestial objects, a red LED flashlight for preserving night vision, and a tripod for stability.

  8. Budget: Decide on your budget before purchasing a telescope. While there are affordable options for beginners, investing a bit more can result in a better-quality telescope with improved optics.

  9. Collimation: Properly aligning the optics of your telescope is essential for clear views. Most telescopes require occasional collimation, which is the adjustment of mirrors or lenses to ensure they are perfectly aligned.

  10. Maintenance: Telescopes should be stored in a dry, cool place when not in use to prevent moisture damage and dust buildup. Regularly clean the lenses or mirrors following the manufacturer's instructions.

  11. Transportability: Consider the size and weight of the telescope, especially if you plan to take it to different observation locations.

  12. Join an Astronomy Club: Joining a local astronomy club can be a great way to learn more about telescopes, get tips from experienced astronomers, and enjoy group stargazing events.

Remember that the best beginner telescope for you depends on your specific interests and needs. It's essential to do some research and possibly try out different telescopes if possible to find the one that suits you best. Happy stargazing!

User questions & answers

Question: I cannot see thru the telescope even after taking all caps off it is stil blank image
Answer: We are having the same issue. It’s been properly set up but even after allowing it to come to temperatures outside, there is nothing we’re seeing. We’ve adjusted magnification, tried different lens, still blank. And yes, all the caps are off too. I have a curious, yet disappointment kiddo on my hands. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Question: I can’t get the the telescope to lock in place when we find something to look at, how is this done
Answer: You have to use the little knob that looks like a T and also the long handle bar (you turn the handle bar right to tighten and left to loosen. They are both apart of the stand.
Question: Is this user friendly as described ? Since im a beginner is this the right fit for me
Answer: I set it up in 5 minutes. I observed the Moon, Venus and Cassini twin stars (actually quad) with in 30 minutes on 25 mm. I have never owned a telescope in my life. The instructions are pictures describing what part goes where under them. How to set up your phone is a bit of a mess but I understood and decided to address that later. I was too excited to see Venus, and then sad when it looked like a big star, lol. There is another way to set it up to see even closer images, so I’ll be experimenting. I want a bigger one now... lol 😂. I’m managing my expectations on the 3X with 10mm parts. I just want to see it all!
Question: Is this good for photographing an eagle 100 yards away
Answer: As long as the Eagle is stationary, yes. This comes with a 10mm and 25mm eyepiece. I think the 10mm would work.

User questions & answers

Question: can this scope be used as a spotting scope for bird watching
Answer: Excellent for bird-watching. At 20x, it's fine. At 40x (long distance) you may want a strudier tripod, and because it's daylight, you can look through the smaller 42mm hole (take off the little cap) in the dust cap and that will improve the sharpness at high power. If you want a better spotting scope, simply buy a fancy wide-angle/high-performance 1.25 eyepiece (super-plossl, etc), around 15 mm focal length.
Question: You say that any tripod that I use for photography should work. Does that mean that I can screw my tripod head into the telescope
Answer: Yes. As others have said, the tripod that comes with the telescope is reallllly flimsy. There are a couple of screw holes on the bottom of the telescope. I was able to attache the telescope to my other tripod using the detachable head on the tripod.
Question: I'm a real beginner/plan to purchase this for my son so we can both explore the night sky, etc. Is it really easy to setup?/How long will it take
Answer: The scope is really good for beginners and it is easy to set up. As others have said the the included tripod is small for portability and not very stable. If used fully "retracted" on the hood of a car for example, it's OK. I've used it with a Celestron 7.5MM eyepiece and a 2x barlow lens and it can still resolve the rings of Saturn on a clear night. It's not designed for that kind of magnification but for an inexpensive scope with simple lenses I was impressed. I wouldn't recommend trying that though until you have some practice on focus, finding objects in the sky, and purchasing a heavy duty camera tripod. You must remember even with the highest power eyepieces, which you only want to consider using for viewing planets, objects are really small which is due to it's 400mm focal length. Overall it's WAY better than spending 40-50 dollars on a cheap toy at the local discount store. Another good option comparable to this is the Orion 76mm Fun Scope. It's really only for table top use but it's easy to swivel up/down left/right. It is a reflector though and images don't appear as crisp in my opinion. You'll find out that half the quality of a telescope is how good the tripod or mounting set up is. For the price you can't go wrong with this scope. I own several telescopes from computer driven to large reflectors and still grab this for quick views of Orions belt, Jupiter, Saturn, the Moon, and star clusters like the double cluster and the Pleiades. Just to add to an already long answer, I added an inexpensive laser object finder (similar to the Celestron Star Finder) instead of the mostly useless viewfinder. It makes it ten times easier to point the scope at objects you're trying to look at and it doesn't take much modifications to get it screwed to the scope tube or stuck on with foam tape. Your son will thank you!
Question: can i see with my left eye
Answer: Only if you look at objects on the left....use right eye for objects on the right side....if its straight above you , you can use both eyes.

User questions & answers

Question: I'm a beginner in telescope and i have a telescope thats a 137EQ. This one here is 70EQ. What does the EQ mean
Answer: No. I returned the one I bought. I couldn’t see 5.56 hole at less than 100 yards
Question: Which eyepiece(s) are you using to view planets? I am trying to view Jupiter and Venus, but all I see are bright blurry circles? Thanks
Answer: The “frame” is more “platform” and it is best described as black. The frame they are referring to is the adjustable base that lifts the mattress. The fabric that covers the frame is black with black/very dark charcoal gray trim. The plastic legs of the frame are also black. As far as I know, there is no white option.
Question: I want to buy this telescope as a gift. I also plan to buy the camera to go with it. what other accessories should I get? Is there a computer disk etc
Answer: There are two on each side, on the side frame rail, under the head of the bead. No they cannot be moved.
Question: what eyepieces doe it come with
Answer: I did, but I purchased a Casa Blanc Bed Bridge Twin to King Mattress Converter Kit - Memory Foam Gap filler.

User questions & answers

Question: Viene con la mochila
Answer: I use it for bloating/gassiness.. works great! I also use it for after drinking alcohol, soak up toxins after a night out. 
Question: What type of eyepiece does it use? Are there higher magnification eyepieces available
Answer: If you compare dosing to other brands and look at how many capsules you have to take to equal this one, it seems to be worth the extra expense. I have to take 1000mg per day and really not interested in taking more than 2 capsules to achieve that. I wish they'd offer more than they do per bottle so I don't have to reorder so often but my functional nutritionist who is VERY picky about the brands he uses recommended this one.
Question: What app do I use to see on my phone, what I am looking at through the telescope? I just received the telescope but gives no information on how to
Answer: I’m using this product for AV’s soil and completely satisfied. Thank you!
Question: does it come with the backpack
Answer: It is, yes, thank you for your question!

About Sarblue Planet Mate Maksutov-Cassegrain 60

A design of simplicity, power and ingenuity

The Maksutov telescope is named after Dmitri Maksutov, a Soviet/Russian optician and astronomer who invented this telescope design in 1941. Though not as widely known as the refractor or Newtonian reflector, the Maksutov-Cassegrain offers superb optical performance. The design corrects the known optical problems such as coma (found in reflector telescopes) while also correcting chromatic aberration (found in refractors). The result is high-contrast detailed views of both terrestrial or celestial targets. In a extremely compact tube, the mak60 offers great viewing capacity as a beginner telescope. You can see more than just the moon! In ideal conditions, it can even help you explore Saturn, Jupiter's moons and more.

Your portable travel companion

Sarblue planet mate 60 telescope features an extremely compact tube as a result of the Maksutov-Cassegrain mechanism. It's very lightweight and portable, making it a good choice for travel and do stargazing on your journey.

Enjoy land viewing

This telescope is equipped with an erect-image diagonal to enable terrestrial viewing. The high quality optics with almost no aberrations brings crystal-clear true-to-life natural scenes in front of you.

A good astronomy educational kit

The original design of a detachable lid which reveals the internal structure of the telescope makes it great for education. You can even see how light travels with some tools.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use another tripod I have a bigger sturdier and has wheels
Answer: Yes and you should! The tripod is the weakest link on this product. This isn't a mark against the company, as the tripod is often the weakest link in any optics set up. I am not sure why your tripod has wheels or how that would benefit, since orienting objects are easier to do using a stable base and the spotting scope attachment along an axis, but hey, follow your heart!
Question: How do you attach the cell phone holder? It is not even mentioned in the instructions
Answer: There is a part of the cell phone holder that twists. As you twist clockwise or counter clockwise the opening widens I order for the eyepiece to fit in it. Once you are able to fit the cellphone holder on the eye piece you tighten the twisting part to fasten the cellphone holder in place. I hope that helps.
Question: Does it can see the moon
Answer: Yes it can does see the moon.... Really it just magnifies the light that comes into your eyeball which your brain interprets as the moon.
Question: What all can you see with this telescope
Answer: The parking lot across the street was all ilI could ever see. It is absolutely trash. The company must be giving all these great reviews
