14 best binocular compound microscopes
A binocular compound microscope, often simply referred to as a compound microscope, is a versatile and powerful optical instrument used for magnifying tiny objects that are not visible to the naked eye.It is commonly used in various scientific and educational settings for detailed examination and analysis of biological specimens, tissues, cells, and other small structures. Here are some key features and components of binocular compound microscopes:
Binocular Viewing: Binocular microscopes are equipped with two eyepieces (oculars), allowing for comfortable and natural binocular (two-eyed) viewing. This provides a more three-dimensional and immersive view of the specimen.
Objective Lenses: Compound microscopes have multiple objective lenses with different magnification levels (e.g., 4x, 10x, 40x, and 100x). Users can switch between these objectives to observe specimens at various magnifications.
Illumination: Most compound microscopes have built-in illumination sources, such as halogen or LED lights, to illuminate the specimen. Some microscopes also have a condenser and diaphragm to control and adjust the amount of light.
Stage and Slide Holder: The stage is a flat platform where the specimen slides are placed for observation. It often includes a mechanical stage with X-Y controls for precise positioning of the specimen. Clips or clamps hold the slides in place.
Focus Mechanism: Binocular compound microscopes have a dual focusing system, including coarse and fine adjustment knobs, to bring the specimen into sharp focus. This allows for precise focusing.
Eyepieces: These are the ocular lenses located at the top of the microscope. They typically provide 10x magnification and can be further enhanced with the objective lenses.
Magnification: Binocular compound microscopes can achieve total magnifications ranging from 40x to 1000x or more, depending on the combination of the eyepiece and objective lenses used.
Binocular Head: The binocular head is the upper part of the microscope that holds the eyepieces and can be adjusted to accommodate the user's interpupillary distance for comfortable viewing.
Diopter Adjustment: Some binocular microscopes feature diopter adjustments on one or both eyepieces, allowing users to fine-tune the focus for each eye individually.
Filters: Many microscopes have filter holders that allow the insertion of various filters, such as color filters or polarizers, to enhance contrast and improve specimen visibility.
Camera and Imaging: Some modern binocular compound microscopes come equipped with a camera attachment or a dedicated camera port, enabling users to capture still images or record videos of their observations.
Base and Frame: The base provides stability to the microscope, and the frame supports the various components. The base may also contain the power source and controls for the illumination system.
Binocular compound microscopes are widely used in biology, microbiology, histology, and other scientific fields for research, education, and clinical applications. They offer high-resolution imaging and are essential tools for studying the microscopic world in detail.

User questions & answers
Question: | What are some tricks to getting the 25x to focus and be as sharp at the 10x eyepieces? Can you only use the 25x for the 100x with oil |
Answer: | It really isn’t that useful to use the 25x ocular lenses, the 10x work fine, but using the 25 x reduces the field of view so much that unless you are looking at something and need a small area magnified I suggest you don’t need them. You can use it with the 100x but it won’t work well because it goes above the reducing power of the lens. Pretty much 100 x 10 is the top end of good resolution. |
Question: | Ex i want question about sending date,,if you want sending this microscope to all over the united state,s for us,,how much it long time aboutly |
Answer: | I don't think it took more than a week to arrive |
Question: | Does this have a top light? That lights up things from the top not just from below |
Answer: | Actually I don't think it does have a top light. All of the magnification is up on top and the light is in the base. There are other items you can buy to attach to this scope however like an external viewer for example or to take photographs or a slide. It is a really great scope....as good as the ones I used in college! |
Question: | Is this microscope strong enough to identify and differentiate between species of mold |
Answer: | This is a pretty inexpensive microscope and the optics, while offering up to 2000 x magnification, are not great. Considering Galileo used optics he made himself I would say if you employ ingenuity and creativity you will be able to differentiate mold species. I've seen some amazing things with my microscope. The 2000 magnification uses the oil immersion technique for clarity. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where is this microscope made |
Answer: | This is a standard LOM and has no polarization. So, it is limited for producing micrographs. The CCD camera it comes with may not be sufficient to obtain the resolution you need. I bought a separate high resolution camera that fit the trinocular. Preparing the sample with finer grits and polish is required to get your mirror finish to expose the crystalin structure. You may find it handy to slip a piece of paper under an edge of the sample so the plane is slightly skewed for height differentiation. For real metallurgy, you need a TEM or SEM. But this scope this will allow you to see the crystal structures. I also bought side view lighting on goosenecks with an XYZ stage to get the best angular light options for photography. |
Question: | Why does only 1 of the eyepieces (left one) have dioptric adjustment? Seems strange that both of the eyepieces do not have that |
Answer: | You would have to get a cable that connects to your phone. The cable that comes with the OMAX has a USB connector on it opposite the micro-USB that connects to the camera. If you have a Micro-USB with either an Apple Lightning connector or one of the android connectors, I don't see why it wouldn't work. |

Answer: | Dear customer, Yes, this microscope should be capable to see things which is 1-8 micrometer long. Best regards, OMAX |
Question: | What does it mean that this is a Siedentopf microscope? I have used several microscopes, but am not familiar with that term |
Answer: | Dear customer, This microscope does not come with a carrying case. There is only a dust cover in the package. The carrying case is: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AZNYZ6W Best regards, OMAX |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the link for the online manual |
Answer: | I don't know where it is made. No claim on the scope itself. Their website claims "Our products are manufactured under strict ISO 9001 quality control standards, and are made by the same technicians, on similar production lines, that make optical instruments for Zeiss, Leica, Nikon, and Olympus." The B120B I have is a very good scope for the price. I use it for brewing and water quality purposes. Recommended. |
Question: | Is the 3MP camera worth $100 over the 1.3MP camera model CS-MD82? I want to show slides on the computer and maybe take still shots for school reports |
Answer: | I borrowed the answer: Diopter Adjustment: When you look through a microscope with two eyepiece lenses, you must be able to change the focus on one eyepiece to compensate for the difference in vision between your two eyes. The diopter adjustment does this. Microscope Glossary of Terms - Microscope World https://www.microscopeworld.com/t-glossary.aspx |
Question: | Any one please can upload some images taken with this Microscope?is the camera changeable?does it take sharp imeages |
Answer: | This microscope has a wide voltage of 100-240V. |
Question: | Is this a dark field microscope |
Answer: | It refers to the inverted v shape eye peice part and its components vs the straight across bar kind. It makes it easier to adjust for me but that's just my opinion. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can it use a graticule in the optic for measuring |
Answer: | If you're asking if it has one, no it doesn't. For the price, though, this microscope is outstanding. I am a veterinarian and use mine all the time and love it. |
Question: | What size rubber eye guards fit this microscope |
Answer: | These would be the best fitting eyecups http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FG8B474. |
Question: | What's included in the package |
Answer: | Off the top of my head, mine came with the following:A pair of 10x and 20x optical lens each.4x, 10, 40x, and 100x objectivesProtective plastic cover (not a hard shell case - more like a bag)At least 3 colored diaphragm filters (blue, green, yellow)A small tube of oil (I'm not sure if it's lube or immersion oil)And I forgot about the spare light bulb |
Question: | Is it possible to connect this device to a computer? if so I’d appreciate an explanation |
Answer: | As far as I can tell it is possible but expensive as you need a camera mounting fixture above eyepiece, a USB camera that mounts to the above fixture and the PC software. I currently use the scope By itself now but would like a camera in the future. Good luck. |

Question: | What does the ad mean by "mechanical stage"? Does it mean th stage moves to facilitate measuring |
Answer: | Hi Alicia: It is difficult to answer your question without knowing your intellectual and experience level. So I will provide an answer that I would give to a college student who at least attempted to perform a dark field observation. The answer is yes if you convert three objects in the condenser (the conversion can be done fairly easily with a light stop, mirror, and an appropriate cone point lens ... during use, the later will usually contain emersion oil (water or other fluid) in the concave cave cavity under the slide to seal the connection (special slides are needed with the appropriate refractive index and cleaned to perfection). This microscope can be converted to perform dark field observations with a good kit. Although I never received a manual or parts list with this microscope, it does appears to have two (light stop and mirror) of the three components. Thus, a moderate conversion could be done, but dark field observations can be very difficult requiring excellent skills and techniques along with a good dark field microscope that would cost 10 to 20 times what you are paying for this scope. I never tried to convert this scope as it was a gift for my grandchild in high school ... so 'm not sure how well the conversion kit works. However, some folks never cease to amaze me ... so go for it! ( My college room mate used metal washers etc. to rig an old scope for this purpose). If you look carefully at all of the pictures on Amazon for accessories to this scope you can see the mirror and light stop. I wish I could show you pictures on this reply, but they are not possible with this format.. You should be able to perform some dark field observations with the conversion, but don't expect the impossible. Remember that you must reverse the conversion back each time for regular viewiing. This microscope is very inexpensive yet still as good as you will find in most college freshman classes. It even has an excellent iris aperture and focal point adjustment on the condenser ... very helpful if you are viewing in any mode. P.S. A professor told me that dark fields were like seeing dust particles illuminated by sun shining through a dark room...that was so helpful to me and also reminded me that I first observed that in my grandma's house! This was some how very comforting to me when getting stressed out in the lab. If you need more help to do this, I can be contacted at [email protected]. Good Luck! Okieprof |
