10 best 15x70 binoculars
15x70 binoculars are a type of binoculars designed for long-range observation and are commonly used for various activities such as stargazing, bird watching, or marine viewing. The numbers "15x70" represent two essential specifications:
Magnification (15x): This indicates that the binoculars can magnify the image 15 times larger than what the naked eye can see. This level of magnification is quite high and allows you to see distant objects more clearly.
Objective Lens Diameter (70mm): The objective lenses are the large lenses at the front of the binoculars. The number 70mm represents the diameter of these lenses. A larger objective lens diameter lets in more light, making these binoculars suitable for low-light conditions and providing a brighter and clearer image.
Here are some key features and considerations for 15x70 binoculars:
Stability: Higher magnification, such as 15x, can make the image appear shakier due to hand tremors. Using a tripod or a stabilizing mount is often recommended for prolonged use.
Field of View: Higher magnification may result in a narrower field of view. This is important to consider, especially for activities like bird watching where a wider field of view can be beneficial.
Low-Light Performance: The 70mm objective lenses allow for better low-light performance, making these binoculars suitable for activities like stargazing.
Size and Weight: 15x70 binoculars are typically larger and heavier compared to lower magnification binoculars. This might affect portability and ease of use.
Exit Pupil: The exit pupil size is calculated by dividing the objective lens diameter by the magnification. In this case, the exit pupil would be 70mm / 15x = 4.7mm. A larger exit pupil can be more comfortable for viewing in low-light conditions.
Coatings: Look for binoculars with multi-coated or fully multi-coated optics to ensure better light transmission and image quality.
Waterproofing: Depending on your intended use, you may want binoculars that are waterproof or at least water-resistant, especially for marine or outdoor activities.
In summary, 15x70 binoculars are a specific type of binoculars with high magnification and large objective lenses, making them suitable for long-range observation in various outdoor activities. They are particularly well-suited for low-light conditions and are often used by astronomers, birdwatchers, and outdoor enthusiasts.
Below you can find our editor's choice of the best 15x70 binoculars on the marketProduct description
Celestron’s SkyMaster series of large aperture binoculars are a phenomenal value for high performance binoculars ideal for astronomical viewing or for terrestrial (land) use - especially over long distances. Each SkyMaster model features high quality BaK-4 prisms and multi-coated optics for enhanced contrast. Celestron has designed and engineered the larger SkyMaster models to meet the special demands of extended astronomical or terrestrial viewing sessions.
Binoculars come in a wide range of shapes and sizes these days, and an even wider range of prices. It's easy to spend less than $100 or more than $500 for what may appear to be, at least outwardly, comparable models. While they may look the same, they are probably quite different on the inside.
Recently, the binocular market has seen a flood of giant binoculars at prices that were unheard of just a few years ago. In general, giant binoculars are defined as those that magnify the view 10 times or more and have 70-mm or larger front (objective) lenses. It used to be that the least expensive giant binoculars cost in excess of $150, even $200. All that changed not long ago, when the bottom fell out of the price cellar. Now, several companies import giant binoculars that sell for half that, or less.
Celestron's 15x70 SkyMaster binoculars are one of the leaders in the low-price giant binocular arena. They certainly sound good on paper. The SkyMasters include multicoated optics and BaK-4 internal prisms, two features that promise brighter, better images, and key points to look for when judging a pair of binoculars. They also come with an adapter for attaching them to a photo tripod, which is a must to use them to their fullest, and a soft carrying case. But just because they are cheap doesn't always mean they are worth the price. Would it be better to save up for a more expensive pair?
To find the answer, I had an opportunity recently to judge the SkyMasters against a pair of Fujinon 16x70 FMT-SX binoculars , one of the finest pairs of giant binoculars sold today. Like the SkyMasters, the Fujinons feature BaK-4 prisms, but also have fully multicoated optics. As a general rule, superior coatings mean superior image sharpness and contrast. But then, that should be expected, given that the Fujinons cost many times more than the Celestrons.
While the Fujinons were clearly the better performer, the Celestron SkyMasters held up admirably. Image brightness, quality, and contrast were all remarkable considering their bargain price. Although images were a little soft across the outer 25% of the Celestron's field, the overall view was impressive nonetheless.
Some inexpensive binoculars have very sloppy focusing, causing the eyepieces to tilt and shift. Not so with the SkyMasters. I found that their center-focusing mechanism worked smoothly, with no apparently backlash or wobble. Eye relief (the distance you hold your eyes away from the eyepieces to see the full field) is stated to be 18 mm, a good distance for higher power binoculars and an important consideration if you must wear glasses when viewing. The SkyMasters are also light enough to support by hand for short periods of time, although buyers would be well advised to mount them on a sturdy photo tripod.
The bottom line is, if you are considering a pair of giant binoculars, whether for bird watching, stargazing, or another recreational use, and have a limited budget, Celestron's giant 15x70 SkyMasters represent an excellent value. --Phil Harrington, author of Star Ware and Star Watch
Pros:
- Exceptional value for the price
- Light enough to support by hand
- BaK-4 prisms
- Multicoated optics
- Outer 25% of the field is soft and a little blurry
- Requires a tripod to use for extended periods

User questions & answers
Question: | how does the tripod adpater hook on? I got it today but im confused how that part hooks on? and then to the tripod |
Answer: | Hi, in the middle of the skymaster, there is one circled logo of Celestron cap. Please remove by unscrew this. You can able to hook the tripod. Thanks. |
Question: | why do so many people prefer these over the 20x80 and 25x |
Answer: | 15x is at the upper limit of what can be hand held. Higher powers would need a tripod to be steady enough. Even at 15x some people would need a tripod or something to lean against. Lower powers give wider fields of view and brighter images. Large binoculars such as 80mm are heavy and need a tripod regardless of magnification. If you want both bright images and high powers look into larger binoculars such as 80 or 100mm. |
Question: | can one side be adjusted seperately for my vision? I have decent vision in left eye and poor vision in right eye. thanks |
Answer: | Yes, first use the center adjustment to get it focused correctly for the left eye...now close your left eye and look only thru your right eye and adjust the right eyepiece until it comes into focus. Now you should be able to see clearly with both eyes! |
Question: | I wondering why so many people have said these work better than their telescopes? If these are 15x and a cheap tele is 100x why are these so great |
Answer: | The principal feature of a telescope is not magnification, but light gathering power. These 70mm binoculars gather about as much light as a 100mm telescope. But since you are using both eyes, the view will appear better. But even in my case, with a 13" diameter mirror in my scope, before I look for anything my binoculars are out checking out the field of view and much of the time even showing me what my telescope will be looking at. Binoculars force you to learn the sky and not be dependent on any coordinate system. They show you larger objects like the double cluster in Perseus, the Pleiades and Hyades star clusters in Taurus, the Beehive cluster in Cancer and even the Andromeda Galaxy better than you can in a telescope because you simply get to see the object in context. There are some large, face-on galaxies like M-33 and M-101, which are easier to spot in these binoculars than they are in a 10" telescope. Without the context of the black sky behind the object there is no contrast and you can't see it.Even with a large telescope, you'll spend most of your time observing at under 100 power. Selling telescopes by magnification is just taking advantage of newbies because you can obtain any magnification with any telescope depending on what eyepiece you use. The question is "will you be able to see anything?" |

Product description
SkyMaster Pro binoculars are the ideal choice for amateur astronomers or anyone that observes at great distances. Compared to lower-priced large aperture binoculars, SkyMaster Pro uses superior optics, coatings, internal parts and housing materials. With large objective lenses, BaK-4 prisms and fully multi-coated optics utilizing Celestron’s proprietary XLT coating technology, the view through a SkyMaster Pro is second to none at this price point. Massive Objective Lenses - The 70 mm objective lenses have tremendous light gathering capabilities, delivering superior low light performance, even in the dimmest conditions. Choose SkyMaster Pro for use at dusk, dawn and nighttime astronomical viewing. Fully Multi-Coated Optics and BaK-4 Prisms - Every air-to-glass surface is multi-coated with Celestron’s proprietary XLT coating technology. Built in Tripod Adapter - The built in tripod adapter of the SkyMaster Pro 15x70 allows the binocular to be attached to a tripod for added stability during longer viewing sessions and also allows a red-dot finder to be attached to it utilizing the included RSR “Reflex Sight Ready” Rail. When properly aligned with the binocular, the red-dot finder will allow objects to be brought into view quickly. RSR “Reflex Sight Ready” Rail - The tripod adapter included with the SkyMaster Pro not only allows the binocular to be attached to a tripod for added stability during longer viewing sessions, but also includes a removable rail for attaching a red dot finderscope. When properly aligned with the binocular, a red-dot finder helps you locate objects quickly and center them in the binocular. Lightweight, Waterproof Construction - A polycarbonate and aluminum housing makes SkyMaster Pro durable and lightweight. The housing’s protective rubber armor is extremely rugged and can stand up to tough use. The fully waterproof housing for use in all weather conditions provides peace of mind when unexpected weather rolls in. The housing is also filled with dry nitrogen gas to prevent the internal lenses from fogging when moving between extreme temperatures or when using the binocular in damp conditions. Extended Eye Relief - 17 mm of eye relief allows for comfortable viewing for both eyeglass and non-eyeglass wearers. Eyeglass wearers can see the entire field of view while looking through the eyepiece with their glasses on. For those that do not wear eyeglasses, the rubber eyecup positions the users eye behind the eyepiece at the correct distance for optimal viewing. Enhanced Magnification - Bring distant objects into view with 15x magnification—great for observing celestial objects in greater detail, searching for wildlife in the brush or viewing a distant object on the horizon.

Question: | can you see planets with these |
Answer: | Hi CV,, All 25x100 binoculars are heavy and not meant to be hand held for viewing. I have several large binoculars, and have found that for optimal viewing with less headaches the " Orion 5379 Paragon-Plus Binocular Mount and Tripod " works the best. I have tried and used several regular and expensive camera tripods and mono-pods using my 25x100 binoculars, and they all are about the same, wobbley, not stable for viewing. It really is worth the extra expense to use the right stable binocular mount... you can also search on ebay for this item, sometimes getting a better deal... good luck - Happy Viewing!....click this link: (http://www.amazon.com/Orion-5379-Paragon-Plus-Binocular-Tripod/dp/B003YJPDN8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1414452952&sr=8-1&keywords=Parallelogram+mounts |
Question: | Hello. i have difficult to make a decision between this one and the mini giant 15 x 63 the weight and price less bothers me thank you |
Answer: | Your question here is on the page for the GiantView binocular, so it's unclear which tripod you're referring to. But we can say that the best recommended tripod for this binocular is the Versa-Go: http://www.amazon.com/Orion-10105-VersaGo-Altazimuth-Telescope/dp/B002UNEOF2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1458318857&sr=8-1&keywords=versa+go+orionYou would also need the appropriate L-arm bracket here: http://www.amazon.com/Orion-5052-Dovetail-L-Bracket-Telescope/dp/B001DGR54O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1458318948&sr=8-1&keywords=5052+orion |
Question: | Where was made it? China or Japan |
Answer: | I am sorry but I can not give you the exact dimensions. I even took this equipament to the countryside. But I can assure you it is pretty huge and weights a ton. Impossible to hold it in your own hands. You must use a potent tripod. Very cumbersome. I do not recommend it at all unless you want to put it in a tripod and be looking at the stars.Cheers |
Question: | Will these binos work are the range to see impacts at 300 yards? Thx |
Answer: | We have both sets in the Celestron SkyMaster brand and the only difference IMO is the size of the objects you are viewing through each pair. The detail is the same and so is the quality between the two sets, which is phenomenal quality in the Celestron SkyMaster brand, and I'm sure it is as well in the Orion brand . The price however is a different story between the 20 x 80 and the 25 x 100 Binoculars. We are extremely happy with both sets. |
