13 best camera lens hoods

A camera lens hood is an accessory designed to block unwanted light from entering the lens. It is typically a cylindrical or petal-shaped attachment that fits onto the front of a camera lens. Lens hoods serve several important functions:

  1. Flare Reduction: Lens hoods help to minimize lens flare, which occurs when stray light hits the lens and reduces contrast in the image. This is particularly important when shooting towards a direct light source, like the sun.

  2. Glare Prevention: They also prevent glare, which is caused by light bouncing off surfaces in the lens system. This can result in washed-out or hazy images.

  3. Improved Contrast and Color Saturation: By reducing flare and glare, lens hoods can enhance the overall quality of your images. They help in maintaining good contrast and vibrant colors.

  4. Protection: Lens hoods also offer a degree of physical protection for the front element of your lens. They can help shield it from accidental bumps, scratches, and even raindrops.

  5. Privacy: In some situations, a lens hood can be used to shield your lens from unwanted attention or to maintain privacy while shooting.

There are different types of lens hoods:

  1. Round Lens Hoods: These are typically used with prime lenses and have a circular shape. They provide basic protection against flare and glare.

  2. Petal Lens Hoods: These have a more complex, petal-like shape and are commonly used with zoom lenses. They are designed to provide optimal shading at different focal lengths.

  3. Rubber Lens Hoods: These are flexible and can be collapsed or extended. They're useful for variable focal length lenses.

  4. Built-In Lens Hoods: Some premium lenses have hoods integrated into their design. They can be extended or retracted as needed.

When choosing a lens hood, it's important to ensure it's compatible with your specific lens model. Different lenses have different filter thread sizes, and the hood should match this diameter.

In summary, a lens hood is a valuable accessory for photographers that can enhance the quality of your images by reducing flare and glare, improving contrast and color saturation, and offering some physical protection for your lens.

Answer: Yes, which size will fit the lens is up to your lens but not camera. If your lens is Nikon D7200 AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm, this 67mm lens hood will fit. Thanks.
Question: Ok, dumb question. What is the metal thing with a point that’s in with the pinch cap
Answer: The metal thing with a point... Is to push the cable (string) throughout the holes on the pinch cap.. Is a little bit harder without the metal.
Question: Amateur question, but can you use a 55mm-to-58mm step up ring to use a 58mm hood on a 55mm lens
Answer: You can always step down when using a larger filter/lens hood on a smaller thread. Why not just buy the right size hood instead. I am not one to use stepping rings unless I have to.
Question: Can you attach filters to both lens hoods? That is..thread the hood onto lens first and then thread filter onto hood
Answer: Yes, both lens hood PAIR WITH FILTER, Our lens hoods provide with Filter Thread, allowing you to pair these hoods with filter and lens cap. Thank you.

User questions & answers

Question: which size should I buy for my canon 50mm 1.4? 52,58 or 67mm
Answer: For a 50mm. The 52 won't fit 50mm ring the hood will be a bit big its not goin to screw on correctly.. Youll have to get a 50mm hood for the 50 mm that you have.
Question: Can you see the lens hood in a shot
Answer: You can. If you have a 18-55 lens it will appear until between de ranges of 18-24mm after than you’ll not see it.
Question: Would this be compatible on Canon rebel t6i? 55mm
Answer: The T6i is a 58mm lens. Its standard lens hooting distance is 18-55mm
Question: Will the lens hood fit on the canon t1i original 55 mm lens
Answer: From what I understand that size is no longer an industry standard just like the 45 mm size, so you have two different options here and depending on your income these answers plus your preference will help you make a decision on what to do next. 1st, you can spend the money to purchase a new/used lens which is a "Industry" standard and buy all of the accessories that you need for it. Now you're thinking at this point? "What if it doesn't fit my camera?" Now remember when I said "Industry Standard",well here's where it really comes in. Now there you don't have to worry because Canon in all it's wisdom has designed their camera's lens collar on all it's SLR cameras to a standard size, so if you have an old Canon SLR from the 80's and you want to know what the newest lenses look like through it, it will fit, but the older SLR probably not be able to operate all of the bells and whistles that comes with the newest version of lenses and vice-versa, but buying new lens does get expensive and then you think to yourself that "Now I have to buy this & that for my new lens". And this is true, but here's my 2nd point, if you don't have an issue with used equipment and if you're just like me you don't really care if you fall into the bushes and/or sand, ect. But as long as my camera is safe and clean and we get the shot we just about broke our necks for is perfect. So I tend to find that most other photographers are the same way and if we damage our equipment then we can't take the next "Perfect" shot. So consider used equipment, but don't make the same mistake that my neighbor did, we compare shots and stories on how we almost killed ourselves talking it as well, anyhow about 4 years ago he came to me bragging about this new lens he just got at a very cheap price. So I happen to look into the lens and I see a small crack in the back of the second lens and I tell him that this looks like it was dropped and was never fixed, he said that he saw that and the guy at the pawnshop said that if he ever had a problem with it that all he needs to do is to bring it back for a refund. Well I was right and on humid day he was out shooting a hawk that he's been trying to photograph for a very long time and would not stay still and right when he went to take the picture and the lens was turned to focus. The lens began to fog up. Because of the crack that we saw turned out to be a breach in the seal which allowed the lens to fog. So he went to the pawnshop for his guaranteed refund, but when he got to the pawnshop to get his money back he found out that the lens plus several other items that he had purchased and were stolen, and because of his so called friend who sold him the lens had not given him a receipt he was out of luck and the police confiscated the lens and he lost his $90.00 so if you decide to buy used equipment, I'd recommend that you go to a photography shop and they should have a wide selection of new and used equipment. Which is your second option, try a used camera store and they might have those unique accessories that are not "Industry Standard" and they could have the tulip hood in that size. Now if you try to make due with a 58mm like Gary Moore had indicated, you will find that the tulip hood will be too large to fit and to force it would ruin your lens. However if you decide to use this method, then I'd recommend that you carry with you a small roll of blue tape, it works great for the temporary fixes and comes off without leaving any residue or glue, plus if you happen to get that little bit of collection on the edge of your lens then you can use the same blue tape to pull that crud off without damaging any of your equipment. I hope this helps.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this good for shooting through a car windshield
Answer: Sure is. That’s primarily what I use it for - thru car windows!
Question: Will the 50-70mm hood fit both my 67mm and 72mm lens? I don't want to have to get 2 different hoods if I don't have to
Answer: The fit on these hoods are very tight and do not stretch that easy. The 50-70mm size will absolutely not fit on a 72mm filter size lens. You're much better off getting the larger 70-90mm hood for your 72mm lens and use a strap or twist tie to tighten it up if it's too loose on the 67mm.
Question: Can this be used instead of a tulip shaped hood? I can't use my threads but need a hood for a shoot
Answer: It's for putting up to glass, such as windows so you can shoot throw it without reflections. Probably too wide to provide adequate sun shielding if just used in place of the hood

User questions & answers

Question: Will this universal lens hood fit my Sigma 150-600mm sport 105mm filter size? The metal it comes with makes it extremely heavy
Answer: With that particular lens, it is achievable to stretch and fit the ULH(M) size lens hood up and over the Sigma 150-600mm 105mm filter thread diameter... however it'll take a lot of effort... both to install it and remove it from that behemoth of a lens... granted KUVRD's lens hood is MUCH lighter in weight and MUCH more compact/packable than that lens' massive lens hood... and we would encourage you to order the MEDIUM size, but really only feel comfortable doing so if you ALSO had multiple lenses within the filter thread range of 72mm to 92mm and your intent was to use them on those lenses and then also on your Sigma 150-600mm... However if it is only to be used with that Super Telephoto lens then I, as the founder of KUVRD and designer of our lens hood, would NOT feel comfortable persuading you to order our MEDIUM size lens hood because I feel that the amount of effort it will take to install onto and/or remove from that lens outweighs the benefits of our lens hood as a product if not intended to be used on other lenses or merely to lighten your load from not having to travel with the lens hood that comes with the Sigma 150-600mm lens... Again, our lens hood WORKS on that lens, it just takes a ton of effort in getting it onto that filter thread and I don't think it's worth it at that point.

Answer: If your stock filter has a 58MM diameter it will screw into it; if not 58MM you need to order the correct diameter measurement, e.g. 62MM/77MM etc. Same applies to the diameter of your UV filter. The lens hood appears to be quite durable and it is indeed dark black.
Question: This works in a Canon SX
Answer: Yes, it may fit but check inside your lens
Question: What is the size for Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC
Answer: on the lens what size does it say?
Question: Will this hood cause a shadow when using flash
Answer: Don't often use my flash, but this is a question that needs an answer for an occasion when I do. I dragged the camera out for a quick test and found that the answer is "yes and no".All depends on the placement of your flash and the power of your lens.I am using a Sony HX400v, which is basically a hefty point-and-shoot. (All I want is snapshots, but finally got tired of not having a viewfinder).Anyway, the camera has a built-in flash perched just above the lens, which is a 24-1200mm zoom. If I zoom in to the 35mm equiv of a 50mm (1:1) Lens, I have no shadow. If I Set the lens to the 35mm equiv of 24mm, I have a shadow in the lower 1/3 of the photo, whether the hood is collapsed or not. Actually, at 24mm I can get the shadow down to a sliver at the bottom of the photo by "extending" the hood backwards toward the camera body.Naturally, if you are using a flash attachment, I am sure it would raise the flash high enough, even for 24mm.Hope this helps.

User questions & answers

Question: Will the tulip hood produce a vignette on a Nikon 24-140mm lens at 24mm focal length? Thanks
Answer: Hello, it does not produce a vignette effect under “normal” conditions. the lens hood may cause slight vignetting on 18-55 lens when zoomed out to the widest angle. This occurs with all universal hoods on the 18-55 at the widest angle.
Question: Why does it say (not for 18-55mm lens) for the 55mm size? i have a nikon 18-55 lens with a diameter of 55mm. shouldn't i get the 55mm
Answer: My hunch is because on the wide end of the zoom range it may block part of the image. I use it on an 18-140mm zoom and while it doesn't block the image when shooting at 18mm (but I don't have a full-frame censor, so it's really a 27mm equivalent), it does block the built-in flash from illuminating the top part of the image.
Question: I want a tulip hood for a 58mm canon eos 18-55mm lens. will this hood cause vignetting when set to 18mm
Answer: I do not get vignetting when using it on my 18-135mm lens, so I would say no.
Question: I have Nikon d3300,just want to know what size fit on it ,my lens size is 18-55mm
Answer: For Nikon 18-55mm lens please choose 52mm size, thanks.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this not rotate a bit each time the camera refocuses? The incised corners of the tulip shape will almost never be properly orientated
Answer: Yes, you are correct. Whenever you are going to shoot at the 18mm setting, you must check the position of the shade so you can avoid the corners of the picture from being blacked out. It is a bit of a pain, but makes up for it when you do have a nasty reflection on the lens. For the cost, I still think it is worth the purchase.
Question: Will this fit a EF 85mm f1/8 lens medium telephoto
Answer: The website says: "Compatibility: The bayonet lens hood is designed for Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM & EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens, fits for T8i, T7i, T6i, T5i, SL3, SL2, SL1, 90D, 80D, 77D, 70D, DSLR camera" Since it is not in that list, I think there is a significant likelihood it does not fit. If I look up that lens the picture does not show the three point latch system for this lens hood. I think Canon ET65III Lens Hood for Canon SLR Lens is closer to what you want. There is also one from Altura.
Question: Will it fit canon eos 2000d/t
Answer: Hi, this lens is designed for lens EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 is STM and EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 is STM not for specific camera, so please make sure your lens model.
Question: Will it work for Nikon? I'm looking for the application on 10-100 55mm lens
Answer: If it's the same size as the 18 to 55mm for the canon, then it should work

Product description

Professional Tulip Lens Hood is primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light (flare) from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact. Screw-mount lens hoods, such as this 55mm, are designed to screw right into your lens or filter. Rear locking ring allows the user to rotate the hood in 360°direction.

Why should you use lens hoods?

Essentially, a lens hood acts to block out light that the lens shouldn’t be receiving, which can contribute to aberrations such as flare, particularly when shooting towards the light. Wide angle lenses, due to their expanded field of view, are naturally prone to gathering stray light, though the reduced field of view on standard and telephoto lenses means that for accuracy, the use of lens hoods is just as important.

  • Fits all 55mm and 58mm lenses
  • The addition of a lens hood can help prevent flares-those circles of light that can accompany images where a strong light source is just outside the frame
  • Professional tulip shape design (also known as 'flower' or 'petal' shape) allows for greater versatility
  • Protects Lens from Accidental Impact
  • Easy to use screw mount lens hood screws right onto your lens or filter.

User questions & answers

Question: Bought this for my nikon d7500 with nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6g vr af-p. hood shape is taken at zoom 18-24 distance. is this not fit to d
Answer: The size of the hood is taken from the diameter of the lens, not focal length. Diameter should be printed on the lens at the end farthest from the camera, looking into the lens.
Question: Does this fit for 75-300 nikon lens?? I have 18-55mm and 75-300mm lens for Nikon D
Answer: It fits my Nikon 75-300 lens. Buy it. If it doesn't work, return it.
Question: can you use a uv or polarizer filter with these lens hoods on
Answer: Yes. You can attach the filter to the lens and then you can attach the hood to the filters.
Question: What is the purpose of these? What do you do with them
Answer: 1 they protect the lens from being scratched. 2 they shade the lens, helping to reduce reflections from bright lights including the sun.
