14 best 30 amp surge protectors
A 30-amp surge protector is a device designed to protect electrical and electronic equipment from voltage spikes and surges. These surge protectors are commonly used in environments where there is a need for higher electrical load capacities, such as RVs, boats, and industrial settings. Here's what you need to know about 30-amp surge protectors:
Voltage Surge Protection: The primary function of a 30-amp surge protector is to safeguard connected devices from sudden voltage spikes or surges in the electrical supply. These surges can be caused by lightning strikes, power grid fluctuations, or other electrical disturbances.
30-Amp Rating: The "30-amp" designation indicates the maximum load capacity that the surge protector can handle. It's important to match the surge protector's amp rating with the electrical system's capacity to ensure compatibility.
Plug and Play: Most 30-amp surge protectors are designed for easy installation and use. They typically feature a plug that can be connected to the electrical outlet or pedestal at RV parks, marinas, or industrial facilities.
LED Indicators: Many surge protectors come equipped with LED indicators that provide information about the device's status. These indicators may show whether the surge protector is functioning correctly or if it has detected a surge.
Automatic Shutdown: In the event of a severe power surge, some 30-amp surge protectors have an automatic shutdown feature. This feature disconnects the electrical supply to protect connected equipment and prevent damage.
Weatherproof Housing: Surge protectors used in outdoor or marine applications often feature weatherproof or rugged housing to withstand harsh environmental conditions.
Diagnostic Features: Some surge protectors have diagnostic capabilities that can help users identify electrical issues or problems with the power source.
UL Certification: It's advisable to choose surge protectors that are UL (Underwriters Laboratories) certified. UL certification ensures that the device has been independently tested and meets safety and performance standards.
Circuit Protection: Surge protectors typically include multiple stages of protection, including circuitry to divert excess voltage away from connected devices and absorb the energy of the surge.
Compatibility: When using a 30-amp surge protector in an RV or boat, ensure that it is compatible with the electrical system's configuration and that it provides protection for both 120-volt and 240-volt circuits if needed.
Warranty: Check the warranty offered by the surge protector manufacturer. A longer warranty period can provide peace of mind regarding the device's reliability.
In summary, a 30-amp surge protector is a critical component for protecting sensitive electrical and electronic equipment in environments with a higher electrical load. It provides defense against voltage spikes and surges, ensuring the longevity and functionality of your valuable devices. When selecting a 30-amp surge protector, consider its amp rating, features, and compatibility with your specific electrical setup to provide optimal protection.

Question: | Does the technology research 34590 universal lock work with the surge guard 44260 entry level portable surge protector - 30 amp |
Answer: | From their website: "The Universal Lock Hasp will only work with #81277 (Mfr. #34830), #81278 (Mfr. #34850), #73993 (Mfr. #44260), #73995 (Mfr. #44270) and #74402 (Mfr. #44750) Surge Guard products only." Based upon this, it will work. |
Question: | How do these in the $80 price range differ from those in the $200 to $300 price range |
Answer: | Those more expensive units are not just surge protectors. They are monitors that will cut power to your RV not only in a surge situation, but in a low voltage, brown out situation. Low voltage will ruin certain delicate circuitry. This will cut off the low voltage, wait (usually 2 mins.), then turn the power back on. If you can afford it, this higher priced monitor is the way to go. |
Question: | will it work with a 20a GFI outlet |
Answer: | You would need an adapter 20 amp to 30 amp. Does any campground only have 20 amp plugs? Probably not. All have at least a 30 amp plug. |
Question: | IS IT MADE IN USA |
Answer: | Does the USA still make things? I thought we just traded stocks and sold Chinese things to each other on websites. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does anyone have this, and wish they bought hard-wired? Contemplating both versions. Like the simplicity this offers |
Answer: | I'm torn: I like the portability, but will probably go for hard-wired. Each plug-in connection offers the potential for a high-resistance connection in case of dirt/corrosion on the plug blades. And it's one less thing to have to set up and worry about. |
Question: | Can i use this product in conjunction of the hughes 50 amp 12,000 watt low voltage boosting transformer |
Answer: | Yes - absolutely. Our EMS should be placed in line after the transformer. It would be Pedestal Power > Booster > EMS > RV. Any other questions, let us know. |
Question: | What exactly does this do, other than act as a big power surge protector for the whole RV |
Answer: | it also protects from over- and under-voltage that can damage air conditioners and appliances. I was at a campground several years ago and discovered that my voltage was around 105v. I got to looking around and discovered that my power was provided by a daisy chain of 5 extension cords! Luckily there was no damage, but I immediately bought a Progressive energy management system. Last summer it saved my rig from an undervoltage problem at a campground in Utah when temperatures were 110+, and every A/C in the CG was blasting away. Highly recommended. |
Question: | If i purchase this, what would be the solution to using my honda eu2000i to power my camper |
Answer: | Honestly using that generator you don't even need this. This generator is not capable of surging enough watts to cause harm to the camper, and you are the only one using this power. What you need this for is when you are plugged in to shore power that is shared by others. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Outside weather how is it protected also recommended lock up security suggestions |
Answer: | The Power dogs are weatherproof, water resistant and are not waterproof. This means the unit will do okay as long as you do not immerse under water. You can always lock the power dogs to the shore power post with the bicycle lock using the plugin holes on the input plug. |
Question: | Will this surge auto restore power.once it trips power. And will it restore the a/c |
Answer: | PWD30 is the basic model and it does not have shut off capabilities. It will protect you against the high voltage spikes but it doesn't trip the power off. Hughes at the moment does not carry the more sophisticated model with the automatic shut off switches. The newer model with the automatic shut off will be released by the beginning of the next year. |
Question: | Is the protector reusable after a event |
Answer: | According to Hughes web site, they have a 'spike module' that is replaceable if it fails due to a 'large spike' (their words). Meaning, the surge protection circuitry is designed to repeatably damp 2400 joules of direct, high voltage events to ground. If (I assume)the surge is higher than 2400 Joules, the 'spike module' may be harmed in grounding it. I don't believe this necessarily means it is guaranteed to protect your camper if the spike exceeds the capacity but it may (my guess) act as a fuse. Not sure but that is my guess based on what I read at their site. |
Question: | Does this protect against high AND low voltage |
Answer: | Jen, The PWD30 does not shut off as the EMS versions do. The PWD30 is an entry-level or simple surge protector. It only surge protects, circuit analyzes, monitors park power, alerts your phone if a problem is imminent, all via Bluetooth. On February First, Hughes will have the only Bluetooth version of a surge protector that shuts off your RV in low or high voltage situations as well. |

User questions & answers
Question: | This is a surge protector and a shut off? What about lightning hitting the power will it stop it from going intonthe coach |
Answer: | If lightning strikes directly near your camper, most likely nothing will protect it. With that said, lightning will likely strike a tree or power pole at the campsite. If hit is not direct, the surge protector will sense the voltage fluctuation and shut off power. |
Question: | how do you know when its used up |
Answer: | The Power Watchdog units have a sensor that will let you know when the surge module is used up. On the base model units - PWD30 or PWD50, there is a red LED light that will illuminate on the unit indicating the surge module needs to be replaced. On the EPO units (PWD30-EPO, PWD50-EPO, PWD30-EPO-H, and PWD50-EPO-H), the error code E9 will be displayed on the unit, as well as you will get an alert sent to your phone. So you will definitely know when you need to replace the modules. |
Question: | How much is the spike module? And where to buy it from |
Answer: | Hughes Autoformers has an offer, if the end user (customer) uses up the surge module within the first 2 years upon purchase, they will send out ONE free replacement module. After that, the prices are very inexpensive and range from $20-$35 or so. Since the module is replaceable, it really is like the last surge protector you will need to buy. You can always keep replacing that module if you need to. |
Question: | Is the app only available for Android |
Answer: | The FREE phone app is available for both Android and iOS (Apple). Just make sure to download the correct app. If you have a Power Watchdog with the auto shut off (EPO - Emergency Power Off), then you need the app that looks like a black face dog with red eyes, if you have the standard Power Watchdog units (no EPO), then you need the one with the red face dog with white eyes. |

Question: | Does this detect low voltage |
Answer: | No |
Question: | Is this a one time use only once there’s a spike it’s done cannot be reset |
Answer: | That answer is incorrect, technically you can't "reset" a surge protector however Hughes Autoformer PWD30 Power WatchDog sold here on Amazon has a Surge / Spike Module so should you get hit by a large spike, simply order a new surge module. No need to order a whole new unit. They claim the modules ate under $30. |
Question: | Does this also have a gfci and if there is a faulty ground will it cut the power |
Answer: | No to both. But a pretty light comes on (which you can see if it is dark outside). |
Question: | Any way of locking protecting it how can I put a lock on it so nobody steals it |
Answer: | Get a good chain and 2 padlocks one must have a big enough opening to put one link of chain and around the wire the other padlock wrap the chain around the pole and lock it to the pole Thank you for the Question you made me think of a good way to secure it |

Question: | If this hits high voltage and shuts power off to the camper is it fried? Meaning Is it a one time protection type of thing or does it just then reset |
Answer: | Yes, when it comes to the Surge protection part, which is the main reason for getting one of these. Only good for one time. This is right out of the instruction manual. “If the red “SURGE” indicator LED is on, it means that the built-in surge protection has been sacrificed to protect your equipment and is no longer functioning properly. Other features will still function, but the unit is recommended to be replaced.” |
Question: | Can you return items marked used whe you order if they do not work |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | We had ours professionally installed not once but twice- once installed it keeps notifying that there is “reverse polarity” - why |
Answer: | Professionally installed, by a Rv shop repair person or Licened Electrician? Makes a big difference if they really know what the heck they are doing. A LE understands how to trouble shoot with a multimeter and its not a guessing game. #2, have you tested your source power to ensure the outlet you are trying is not reversed, is it a new rv or used, does rv have a 12v converter, are all just basic questions to start considering, examining before it gets plugged in again. |
Question: | Do all of the 35530 Hum like the review below indicates? Or is it a fluke |
Answer: | My earlier response was via my cell phone, and a bit brief. I started my career out many many years ago as Electronics Repair Tech in the Navy, got my BS in EE & Computer Science, FCC license 1st attempt, wired several homes & industrial wiring ..... tons of bench time. I may be a bit slower & rusty. I never expected to see so much bad wiring, bad circuits, crazy voltage levels and hazards for RVs at RV parks in the US, Canada & Alaska during my 2018 summer trip! Again, Surge Guard 30Amp internal model saved me great expense, avoided all the potential damage and likely hours of repair time to my new travel trailer. It's a quality product with great features for the money. If you don't have the background to trouble-shoot and review the installation criteria have someone that does review if it's 100% correct. Write me back & give me better clue on how loud, when, and under what situation it Hums. I'd be happy to provide suggestions..... mrDave |
