DVD-R discs are a type of blank optical disc used for storing digital data. Here are some key points related to DVD-R discs:
Format and Capacity:
- DVD-R stands for Digital Versatile Disc Recordable. These discs are write-once optical media, meaning that once data is recorded on them, it cannot be erased or rewritten.
- DVD-R discs typically have a storage capacity of 4.7 gigabytes (GB) for single-layer discs. There are also dual-layer DVD-R discs available with a capacity of 8.5 GB.
Compatibility:
- DVD-R discs are widely compatible with DVD players, DVD-ROM drives, and DVD recorders. Most DVD drives and players support playback of content recorded on DVD-R discs.
Recording Speeds:
- DVD-R discs come with different recording speeds, such as 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, etc. The speed indicates how fast data can be written to the disc. Higher-speed discs are compatible with drives that support lower speeds.
Usage:
- DVD-R discs are commonly used for creating backup copies of data, archiving files, and creating home videos. They are also used in the creation of DVDs for distribution or sharing content.
Compatibility with Burning Software:
- DVD-R discs can be used with various DVD burning software applications. Users can use software to burn data, videos, or other content onto the disc.
Writable Surface:
- DVD-R discs typically have a surface that can be written on using a compatible optical drive. Users can use markers or labeling systems to identify the content recorded on the disc.
Longevity:
- The longevity of data stored on DVD-R discs depends on various factors, including the quality of the disc, storage conditions, and exposure to external elements. Proper storage in a cool, dry place is recommended for preserving data integrity.
Archival Quality:
- Some DVD-R discs are marketed as having archival or long-term data retention qualities. These discs are designed to resist degradation over time and are suitable for storing important data for extended periods.
Manufacturers and Brands:
- Various manufacturers produce DVD-R discs, including well-known brands such as Verbatim, Sony, Memorex, and others. The choice of brand may impact the quality and reliability of the discs.
Cost:
- DVD-R discs are generally affordable and widely available. The cost may vary based on the brand, recording speed, and packaging.

User questions & answers
Question: | Do these Dvd's each have their separate case |
Answer: | Absolutley not. It's just as it looks in the picture. That is, it's in a stack in one container. Jewel cases are so expensive. No DVDs or CDs that come in quantity that I know of come in individual cases. |
Question: | What do the letters -R, +R, -RW and +RW mean |
Answer: | As I understand it The only difference between Dvd-R and Dvd+R Is the how the laser burns the data DVD-RW Means you can burn and erase multiple times |
Question: | Can I write information on the disc directly or do I need or do I lables |
Answer: | I've written on my discs with a regular Sharpe for many years (over 20) and even the oldest discs are fine. No problem at all. I have about 3,000 discs made over the last two decades and have never found a single problem with any of them so I would say, go ahead and just a Sharpie. |
Question: | What is the Version number of this disk? Verbatim 4.7 gb 16 x speed |
Answer: | For the price, it is the best you can buy. I try to get Verbatim DVD-R because on my HP desktop computer and the video software I use, it is the best. I does not matter the version number of this disk. What matters is that it is 4.7 Gb with a speed of 16. You will be able to record movies, photographs, music and much more. When formatted, you get about 4.1 Gb which is about 30 minutes of HD. |

Why Verbatim
Verbatim has been trusted for over 50 years to provide reliable and affordable data storage products and is the leading brand of optical media sold today.
Verbatim prides itself on producing optical media compatible with more drive manufacturers than any other brand in the world, giving our customers better disc burns at rated drive speeds.
Backup v. Archive
The difference between backing-up your data and archiving your data is subtle, but important. Backing-up data is usually done on a daily or weekly basis, to account for any edits or additions you have made. Archiving is a more permanent solution – ideally, you archive data a few times a year and it remains safe for years to come.
Optical media is the ideal media for archiving. It is durable enough to last for years and takes up less physical storage space. The random access file retrieval makes finding data faster and easier. And with better backwards compatibility, data stored on optical media can be accessed for many years to come.

Ultra-Stable
Verbatim’s AZO recording layer is a unique and ultra-stable layer with a high resistance to UV light degradation while withstanding high laser and rotation speeds. Verbatim’s particular attention to the durability and light fastness of AZO makes it more stable than most recording dyes and the least affected by ultraviolet light.
High Sensitivity
AZO also offers high sensitivity for reliable high-speed recording and high reflectivity to eliminate read/write errors. The depth of the recording layer is also critical. The thinner the layer, the higher the sensitivity and power margin; therefore, the better the DVD works for high-speed recording.
High Quality
No interruptions on backups, production jobs or downloads! Verbatim’s AZO technology creates optical discs with one of the lowest error rates, offering reliability, maximum read and write performance, and superior archival protection that lasts.

User questions & answers
Question: | What color are the backs of these discs? Like the side you would not write on/label. Thanks |
Answer: | I would say that the side the laser burns is lavender, almost identical to the color you see on the product label bottom half. |
Question: | What is the difference between "Branded" and not |
Answer: | Verbatim does not actually manufacture their own discs. They also use 2 different manufacturers that I am aware of. The superior quality Verbatim AZO discs, are manufactured by Mitsubishi, which should be the product on this page. The Verbatim DataLifePlus/DataLife Series are a lower quality product, manufactured by CMC Magnetics. Neither type of disc are actually manufactured by Verbatim themselves. This is a very common practice among most CD/DVD/BD recordable disc brands. |
Question: | Verbatim life series dvds are reported to be lower quality and less reliable. i don't want life series. are these life series dvds |
Answer: | I don't remember them having "Life Series" on the label, so I doubt it, but in any case, I used them ALL without one problem ~ THEY WERE FLAWLESS! |
Question: | Are these DVD's rewritable? They have the "RW" on the case but the description says "write once |
Answer: | No they are not rewriteable. In this case the RW signifies read-write. That means you can read from them and write to them. This item is marked DVD+R. If they are marked DVD+RW they would be rewriteable. They have to have the RW behind the disc description. Ex. CD-RW, CD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD+RW would signify all rewriteable disc's. |

Answer: | No problem you just have to have your program to record |
Question: | I have a dell , and just brought the dell dvd/cd player, i want to use some sd card videos, can i download on these |
Answer: | if you mean download videos from your SD card to your computer to burn them to disc, this would fit the bill. If you have to buy a DVD burning software do your research. I use ConvertXto DVD or ConvertXtoHD to burn my disc but there is a free one out there and I forget the name of it but I remember that one had a very steep learning curve to it. Thats whyI started using ConvertXtoDVD by VSO software |
Question: | can i use these to make dell backup discs |
Answer: | Yes, you can even write windows 7/8/10 onto disks and install windows from the disk. You can do lots! Make sure you follow Dell's instructions for writing backup DVD disks carefully!Personally I would just make a folder of all your music, photos, documents you want to backup and upload it to mega! 50 free gb wonderful! |
Question: | How many discs in this pack |
Answer: | There are 15 (you can see 15 pk in a yellow 'box' in the picture) but 15 is not mentioned anywhere in the description. |
