14 best 8mm converters
8mm converters are devices used in the context of video conversion, typically related to analog film formats. Here's some information about 8mm converters and their relevance to Video Converters, Audio Video Accessories, Accessories Supplies, and Electronics:
Video Converters: Video converters, including 8mm converters, are electronic devices used to transform video signals from one format to another. In the case of 8mm converters, they are designed to convert analog 8mm film footage into digital formats like DVD, Blu-ray, or digital files for modern playback and preservation.
Analog Film Formats: 8mm film is a historically popular format for shooting home movies and small-scale filmmaking. There are two main types of 8mm film: Standard 8mm (also known as Regular 8mm or Double 8mm) and Super 8mm. These film formats have largely been replaced by digital video, but many people still possess valuable memories and footage captured on 8mm film.
Conversion Process: 8mm converters facilitate the transfer of analog 8mm film to a digital format. The process typically involves playing the film on a specialized projector or scanner that captures each frame as a digital image or video. The converted material can then be edited, stored, and played back on modern digital devices.
Audio Video Accessories: 8mm converters may be considered audio-video accessories because they help bridge the gap between older analog formats and modern digital technology. These devices are essential for those who wish to preserve and enjoy their analog video memories in a digital format.
Electronics: 8mm converters fall under the category of electronics due to their use of electronic components, such as sensors and digital conversion circuits, to transform analog signals into digital ones.
8mm converters are valuable tools for individuals looking to digitize and preserve their old 8mm film footage, ensuring that memories captured on these formats can be enjoyed in the digital age. These converters can be found from various manufacturers and brands, offering different features and capabilities to suit the needs of users.

User questions & answers
Question: | Once downloadat 30fps to sd card, where to from there? it will probably play in a pc, but how to you get the capture to play on a tv (dvd |
Answer: | Import the file into a program like Pinnacle's Studio pro or Adobe Premiere Elements. From there you can create a DVD. Or upload directly to YouTube and you have a watchable movie that will play on your TV if your PC is linked to your TV. That last way is best as the second compression which YouTube does to the movie improves the quality of the video. |
Question: | What is power? is it 220/230v for using in eu |
Answer: | i have a US unit, it came with an external power supply that plugs into the wall socket. It outputs 12 vdc that plugs into the unit.It should have no issue if the correct wall supply is furnished for the eu unit. Unit actually runs on 12v. |
Question: | how much can a 32 GB card hold. How many small reels |
Answer: | My 3-inch reels average about 150 MB each. So a quick back-of-the-napkin calculation is 213 3-inch reels will fit on a 32 GB memory card. |
Question: | Has anyone figured out a way to use 7" reels on this unit |
Answer: | I found out that the 7" reels that surface mount electronics parts are packaged on for automated manufacturing are the same as old super 8 reels. I work at a company that has electronics manufacturing and the empties get tossed out. So, I got a bunch of them with intent to make some pulleys out of them. Idea was to put a cut down one on the wolverine take up drive, then a rubber belt (actually a girls hair band) over a another for offset and finally a "final drive" that I could put the actual 7" take up on. Had that stuff mounted on a wood stand. The supply reel just mounted on another wood stand with a bolt and wingnut. Good idea but didn't work well. The pulleys & belts took too much torque to turn and the wolverine slip clutch was not up to the task. Plan B, I had a motorized film editor with 2 variable speed drive motors on it. So, I took that apart and arranged one of the motors to drive my pulley setup instead of the wolverine. I had to babysit it but it worked and I was able to scan several full 7" reels w/o having to cut them into smaller sections. Looked real kludgy but got it done. If I were to be doing a lot more of this, I would rebuild the setup with a proper motor. |

User questions & answers
Question: | for some reason i was unable to burn to dvd after processing a vhs tape. there is a mpg output file. how do i get vidbox to burn that mpg file to dvd |
Answer: | Directly after recording a file, it should move to the Step 4 screen which will have the Burn DVD option. Clicking that option should allow burning to disc. If the program fails to burn successfully, you should be able to try again as long as you do not close the program. |
Question: | I want to convert old vhs tapes to dvd's my old vcr has only white and yellow cable connections.(no red) will this work on my vcr |
Answer: | As has been explained, your machine is apparently so old it only recorded monaural sound. That's why just one audio cable coming out. That's okay, but you might have to finagle to get sound on both channels of your digital recording. Sometimes, if you put just one audio source into the left input of the recorder, it will default to put that same audio on both left and right, so when you play it back on your stereo TV you don't just hear sound from one side of the room. If it does not work that way, you can just get an adapter, one plug in and two plugs out, and thus fill up both audio channels. Super simple and cheap and buy it anywhere, at any stereo shop, or here on Amazon no doubt. |
Question: | Does it work for mini dv tapes |
Answer: | you don't need it for mini dv, they are already digital. You just need to find the correct wire to connect it to your PC and windows will make the video. for my mini dv I needed a fire wire cable, and a slightly older pc that had a firewire jack. |
Question: | I just want to know how we move 8mm to dvd - also can we edit |
Answer: | You cant really edit the video with this software. This does a pretty good job converting your 8mm tape to digital files. You install the software, plug the component plugs from your 8mm camera/player to the box. Another cable coming out of the box plugs into your laptop via usb. After that, you startup the software follow the simple prompts until you get to a record screen. Hit play on your camera/player and when the video comes up on your computer screen click the record button. This will create an mpeg video file. Once you create the mpeg video file you can always edit your video files in another video editing application.Once you are done editing your video file you can always burn it to a DVD. |

User questions & answers
Question: | It used to be that after photos are taken and still in the camera when roll is removed it cannot be exposed to light. How does this work |
Answer: | U can look up YouTube how to pull out w the screw, inside is 35mm and it does work w this scanner |
Question: | Does this unit save directly to a computer or do you have to save to SD Card and then to the computer |
Answer: | Yes. The scanner records the images (JPG) on removable media like a camera or directly to the computer via USB cable (included). You can transfer via USB or by removing the media and transferring it that way |
Question: | Does the type of media inserted determine the number of megapixels an image is converted to |
Answer: | There is no tray, you push the 1st slide in. It is not in the center for the picture to show completely so you use the 2nd slide to push the 1st slide in position and after digitizing the 1st slide you continue to push the 2nd slide all the way in. The 1st slide is not yet all the way out so you push the 3rd slide in a little way so you can get the 1st slide out. Continue with all your slides. Once you do about 10-15 slides it become very routine and works well. |
Question: | The ntsc out is really useless, only way to get digital images is to write to the sd card, correct |
Answer: | I don’t know about the dpi but it is 14.0 megapixels (4320 X 3252). Much better than the old slides we have scanned in! |

User questions & answers
Question: | how long is the cable |
Answer: | on one end about 100cm for the USB cable middles is a 10 cm elgato capture thingythen short 10+cm cables on the other end for s-video and composite |
Question: | Can I transfer my VHS videos thru my Mac and save them all on an external hard drive to save space on my Mac |
Answer: | Yes, the software will give you an option for a destination for the captured videos. Just make sure that the drive is hooked up when you run the software and select that drive as a destination. Depending on the speed of the connection (USB/FireWire/Thunderbolt), it may take from a little to a lot longer than to do it to your local HD. If that turns out to be very slow, and you want to do a lot of converting at one time, another option is just to save one video to your Mac's drive, and then move it to the external HD while you're converting the next movie. |
Question: | What format is the converted file in? Can you change this to other formats (.AVI, .DVIX, ect |
Answer: | If you use VirtualDub you can output your video in different formats. I output to raw AVI so I can cut my video into smaller segments in Adobe Premiere without sacrificing quality. VHS quality is already so poor, I don't want to lose any of it by re-encoding mp4/h264 files. |
Question: | I can see the input plugs, but what is the output plug? USB, Apple lightning |
Answer: | Absolutely does NOT WORK on the new Thunderbolt 3 ports (USB-C). The feed appears jittery, despite looking fine on the TV. I have tried two different Elgato devices, 3 different USB 3.0 to USB-C adapters (including Apple) and a brand new MacBook Air specifically for this project. I have trouble shot every aspect and video is distorted and jumpy, probably due to data transfer feeds from a USB 2.0 device coming into Thunderbolt ports. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can it be set to grab frames all the way to the edge of the film, capturing the sprocket holes, too |
Answer: | I do not see the interest but yes, you can. You can adjust the X, Y and Z axes. The Z axes would allow you to grab frames including the edge of the film. |
Question: | Can the usb port be use to save digitized movies to my pc instead of to the sd memory card? the product info does not say what the usb port is for |
Answer: | You can transfer from an internal SD card which shows up in Windows Explorer when the USB connection is made. |
Question: | Does this convert super 8mm with sound |
Answer: | No it does not |
Question: | How good is the conversion quality (personal opinion |
Answer: | First, that will obviously depend on the quality of your film. From my experience, the quality is very good (but no sound). I scan my film on the sd card and then view it on my TV. it is as good as if it was projected with the legacy projector system. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Play back speed shows 30 frames per second. Does this mean that the playback would be near twice as fast as originally filmed |
Answer: | Hello, thank you for your question. We do not sell longer hot line hose at the time, however you can get one at the Home Depot or similar store. Please measure how much extension do you need. You can get 3/8 in. OD Compression Brass Coupling Fitting that would allow you to connect extension hose. You would need 3/8 in. x 3/8 in. Stainless Steel Universal Dishwasher Supply Line, they are 48", 60" or 96" long. You can also try buying shorter 3/8 in. Compression x 3/8 in. water supply line. They are up to 36". |
Question: | Does it take an 8 in reel |
Answer: | Thank you for the question! It connects to both: It takes hot water from vanity sink and cold from the toilet line. You can also use cold (toilet line) only and cap hot water inlet on the mixer with provided cap in the packaging, but this way you would have COLD water bidet only. |
Question: | Does it have sound on the super 8 mm |
Answer: | It allows regulated flow depending on the force applied, it’s not designed for such, but will act accordingly based on the control of force applied. By thumb |
Question: | Is this a totally stand alone machine, or is it required to hook up my PC during the conversion |
Answer: | Not on the sprayer itself. I use a small "O" (approx 1" in diameter) ring that I slide over the head and leave there. I can use it to keep a continuous. flow |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this run on Win |
Answer: | I had to work with the Corel help desk for over 10 days to get mine to work on Windows 10. The software disk that came with it was labeled Windows 7 and 8 and Copyrighted 2013 (before Windows 10 was released). The help desk eventually sent me to a link where I could download a new version of Pinnacle Studio for Dazzle which was Copyrighted 2020. Maybe I just got a box that has been sitting on the shelves for years? |
Question: | Will this plug into 1394 FireWire to upload mini dvc footage onto computer |
Answer: | It's AV (Component) to USB. So no compatibility with FireWire out of the box. |
Question: | does this device capture in avi |
Answer: | Yes it does Dayna. The video editing software that comes with it has this feature in its recording settings. |
Question: | Does this work with vhs-c tapes or a jvc gr-ax74 camera |
Answer: | You run the video from your camera through your computer via the Dazzle. It feeds to the dazzle program and then creates a cd. It is a bit of a trip learning to use Dazzle program including a few failed disk prints. Once you get it down it is a breeze. |

User questions & answers
Question: | No sound? If you convert videos, do you lose their sound |
Answer: | 1. Transfer using scanner. 2. Transfer again using any magnetic sound projector onto white paper or transfer box. The audio must be connected with mini pin from projector to audio into camcorder. Camcorder must have audio in option. 3. Using video editing software such as Adobe sold here on Amazon, import both versions. Align both versions on timeline, delete video--not audio from sound transfer. Align audio and tweek sync if needed, by changing slightly the speed of the audio track. We use the Relecta Super 8+ scanner. Slow professional results. This unit is very cheap, flimsy and the sub-par encoding is due to the speed it needs to encode, at 20fps necessary for film transfers in 8mm. The Reflecta however, combines the 1080p images once scan is finished into movie, giving superior results. Also pay attention to the CMOS chip size. This one is something like 2.5 whereas the Reflecta CMOS is 9. That's the most important subject regarding scanners. |
Question: | Does it have manual frame-by-frame scanning to ensure perfect frame alignment over trouble spots in the film like torn sprocket holes and bad splices |
Answer: | I have 8mm film put some of the film has torn sprocket holes. Does this projector need sprocket holes or does it run on the edge of film? |
Question: | How adjustable is the compression? Some capture devices suffer from lossy compression. Also if 1536v, why is 1080p the highest resolution available |
Answer: | The compression and resolution are almost academic considering the image quality of an 8mm frame. Without compression, you'd be dealing with unwieldy file sizes. mp4 artifacts are way down on the list of things to consider here. This product is for movies shot by amateurs. I set my video editor to 1080p ProRes and then re-compress to mp4. The degradation is hardly noticeable. |
Question: | How long does it take to convert a 50ft reel |
Answer: | What is important here is that this machine is actually a 8mm/super8 SCANNER! It does not transfer the film elements in real time. And, that is the good news. It will scan one frame per second (my best estimate). So, a 50’ reel could take about 25 minutes. One thing that I needed to do it run the video file through a video editing software to get the best speed and exposure. Then you can transfer the file to a DVD or onto a MP4 . I did both. I made a dvd file to transfer as well as a MP4 file to stream via my router. Get the pro version to transfer into 1080. The image from 8mm will only have a limited sharp quality to the image. Good luck with it |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the tv jack for? the manual said it is a phone jack, but none of tv has a phone plug |
Answer: | While it's true that camera "film" can't be exposed to light, DEVELOPED film becomes a "negative", which CAN be exposed to light. So far, I've converted about 200 35 mm slides to digital photos without any problems. I haven't tried using negatives yet, but I'm sure the result will be the same. It's a fantastic little machine. |
Question: | Can this scan 120 film |
Answer: | With a Mac, you have to save images to an SD card or the device's built-in memory (only 128 MB). Then you choose USB Upload and you can transfer the images to your computer. |
Question: | Are the Reels for 8mm film scanning included or are they an extra cost? None are shown in the advertisement |
Answer: | I'm not sure about that as I have only produced a digital image from a negative. |
Question: | Does this connect to the computer to save the photos onto hard drive or do you need the SD card |
Answer: | Not being an expert on the computer, I am not sure what "ntsc" means, but I do NOT use an sd card with my Kodak Scanner. I have the scanner plugged directly into my laptop, and the digital images go straight to the E drive, from where I easily put them into folders under My Pictures. So far I have done about 1,100 slides, and I am so very happy with the quality of the digital images. I also have had fun editing for brightness and color. Many of my digital images are better than the original slides! I am extremely happy with this product. |

User questions & answers
Question: | The software requires a product key not included in the package- advise |
Answer: | As I remember, it was printed on back of the CD package. This is a mini CD so maybe you did not see it. Also, I see there was another answer saying the output quality was low. I do not find that to be the case. I play my converted 8mm videos on a 55" screen and I think they look as good as the original tapes. |
Question: | Can I use this to transfer my vhs home movies to a dvd just using my vcr player and laptop |
Answer: | Yes this is why I bought this item. I had a VHS tape that someone wanted put on a DVD. This plugs into USB, you connect the VCR and record the video to your computer. All the software you need comes with the device. |
Question: | Will this send audio and video signal from a usb to rca such as from a iPhone to a monitor/tv |
Answer: | No. The USB on this device is designed to draw power from a PC/allow for simple connectivity. The RCA are INPUT ONLY. This is designed to capture audio/video from devices such as VCRs, and older video game consoles. |
Question: | will this work with 64bit windows |
Answer: | It might if you can get Microsoft to give you drivers for the video format. I gave up and bought a Pinnacle DAZZLE, which also did not work. Problem , Windows 10. Solution download COREL VHS3X64 |
Question: | Does this device work when connected via usb hub or docking station, or does it need to connect directly to a computer's usb port |
Answer: | I have it connected through a USB 2.0 hub and have connected it directly to my laptop works great both ways. |
Question: | Can I transfer the video from my vhs to my pc with this |
Answer: | Sure -- you play your old video tapes on a VHS player (with either red/white/yellow or S-Video output connector) and capture them as digital files (such as MPG format) on any computer with a USB port. For me, it worked like a champ. . . |
Question: | Will this work on a mac |
Answer: | Under "system requirements" in the book that comes with it, it just says Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10. There is no mention if it works or doesn't work with Mac. |
Question: | So, can you take an input for a console from it? To record video |
Answer: | I've done this with numerous devices and it works fine (as long as if the connectors fit of coarse). Only problem would be framerate and resolution. I believe framerate is locked in at 30 fps and resolution has 3 options: 720*480 352*480 352*240. This is great if you're playing on an older console like the ps1 or even ps2 (keep in mind that you're working with a 4:3 aspect ratio). Video editing can fix this issue though. Also, did notice video/audio sync issues with the 720*480 resolution option. Fortunately, the sync issue was consistant so video editing allowed me to fix that. FINAL VERDICT: If you are looking for hd 60fps video recording, this is not the device for you. However, if you're looking for the cheapest way to capture decent gameplay footage, this device should do the trick. Hope this was helpful. (Also, if you can tell me the exact console you are wanting to capture with this, I might be able to confirm that it works) |
