User questions & answers
Question: | im trying to make my own test leads for different applications, will these work/fit with a voltmeter |
Answer: | Depends. It should fit as the multimeters use standard banana plug socket innerds, but for years commercial test leads have no longer used bare plugs because of the hazards associated with accidental contact which would be shockingly dangerous if working with high voltage (yes, these meters are routinely used in high voltage electrical applications - my meter carries a CAT III rating for use with 1000V, CAT IV for 600 V). BUT, I mainly use my meter on ham radio stuff and sometimes on cars - all low voltage DC applications.I just ordered these to make a current (amperage) test rig with Anderson Power Pole sockets. Again, I stress that I am working with voltage running significantly less than 30V (sometimes 24 V systems in aviation or other automotive systems), but I will wrap the plug bodies in heat shrink insulation to minimize likelihood of contact. |
Question: | I've read that these plugs can accept 12-18 AWG wire; however, I'd like to know what you all have used/what is working best |
Answer: | I use 12 gauge on my fronts and 14 on my surrounds with no issues. The 12 gauge was a little difficult to get wrapped back around and then screw down, but I really don't know of any banana plug that would we easier, without going to the kind where they use a screw to fasten. This is the easier, cleaner look in my opinion! |
Question: | The description says: "Can accept bare wire and spades. " How do you connect spades |
Answer: | As PCKIDZ replied, this is a two function connector. The banana plugs are pushed into the hole in the end.If you unscrew the barrel which is knurled, the smaller shaft is exposed, where you can slip on your spade lug and then tighten the knurled shaft to secure the lug. |
Question: | whats the differance between open screw and closed screw banna plugs |
Answer: | "Open Screw" type plug (side wire) allows for daisy chaining or stacking additional banana plugs to the back. This is desirable in DJ applications if you're running a speakers in parallel and if your amp can handle the low impedances. Closed Screw type has the wire at the back. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do these come with the screwdriver |
Answer: | Unfortunately they do not come with a screwdriver |
Question: | These plugs come with some type of plastic or rubber insert. What is this for? Should it be removed |
Answer: | I think the "plastic" piece is a short 18/24-guage heat shrink tubing that can be used to put overtop existing plastic casing on each of the stranded pairs of the 12-gauge cable. You don't need it, but if you cut too much of the plastic off of the 12-gauge cable, you may want to heat shrink tubing on or cut the wire so no copper touches the outer metallic casing of the plugs and short out. I used the heat shrink tubing as a slide guide to measure how much copper I should expose so that I can push the tightly twisted strands of copper into the tip of the plug. I clamped the screw down onto the plastic covering of the cable instead of on the bear strands. It is tougher and the screw needs to be flush against the plug's body or else you won't get the out case to slip overtop with the plug fully inserted. |
Question: | It says both 10 pack and 10 pairs. Is this 10 plugs or 20 plugs |
Answer: | 10-pack = 10-pairs = 10-black pugs and 10-red plugs = 20 plugs (red/black). The whole package consists of 10 pairs, with each pair individually wrapped in it's own package. That's why it's called 10 pack and 10 pairs. I can't be more explicit than this. |
Question: | I have 8 AWG wire will this plug work |
Answer: | It can accept bare speaker wire from 10 to 18 AWG |

User questions & answers
Question: | Which end of the banana do you plug it into |
Answer: | The top, where the stem attached to the tree -- where you normally start peeling the banana. But, no need to peel first before using these, as they will plug right into the stem. |
Question: | which is thicker a 12 gauge wire or a16 gauge wire |
Answer: | I read somewhere that says the gauge number is actually a fraction of an inch. So the higher the fraction the smaller the wire. e.g. 1/12" is larger than 1/16" |
Question: | Is the banana plug the same as an rca plug |
Answer: | No. It's a single conductor. |
Question: | The female connection each plug is said to have is hard to visualize. Is there a picture demonstrating its use |
Answer: | It is pretty simple. You should have a whole in the middle of where your speaker wire hooks in. Instead of using raw wire you can attach it to the plug and then plug it in the receiver jack. |
- Can accept bare wire, spades, or other banana plugs. Can accept 12 to 18 AWG speaker wires.
- Color coded black/red rings for maintaining proper polarity
- Secure, positive contact with binding posts
- Corrosion resistant, 24K gold plated brass plug

User questions & answers
Question: | How do you connect these to a 12 volt "go Box" cover |
Answer: | I do not know what a "go box" is. |
Question: | When you disconnect the plugs, isn't it easy to short them by touching each other? looks like the whole piece is the same conductor |
Answer: | If I understand your question correctly, once the plugs are disconnected from the receiver, there is no signal going through them, therefore no danger of short. You shouldn't be connecting or disconnecting the speakers with the unit on. Actually more likely to short out trying to install using bare wire connections instead of banana clips. The clips cover the bare wire so no chance of a stray strand or two shorting across the back of your component. |
Question: | I have used open screw plugs for years; are there any substantial advantages to the closed screw type |
Answer: | The big advantage is when installed correctly, you won't have any chance of stray wires sticking out. So then less chance of shorting the wires. On 14 gauge and smaller wire, it shouldn't be that hard to do to install correctly, easily. On 12 gauge wire, the maximum recommended for the monoprice plugs, the insulation doesn't fit very well into the body of the plug, so you just have to strip more insulation off to get it to go easier. One possible downside to them is that the wires stick straight out the back instead of coming out of the side. If you have wall mount speakers with a narrow clearance, that could be an issue. But you could get the open screw style to fix that. At the receiver, it was beneficial to me. |
Question: | How do you connect these (closed and open type) to the speaker wire |
Answer: | First I unscrew the banana connector, splice the wire and stick the open wire through the hole and fold it over the threading, then I screw the banana connector back together. I use two pairs of vise grips as it gets a little tough screwing them back together by hand since the wire catches the threads on the banana connectors. Hope this helped |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the largest gauge wire they will handle |
Answer: | 12-18awg so 12awg is the largest gauge wire these will accept. |
Question: | Are the black and red plastic or rubber shells that slide up over the 2 locking screws |
Answer: | On the 9 pair I'm selling, the shells appear to be a flexible rubber-like composition. Sorry, I'm not a chemist, but if you are looking for some flexibility these have it. My installer had another package, so only needed one pair from me. thanks, George |
Question: | Besides bare wire; will a standard banana plug fit inside this right angle plug |
Answer: | Nope, it's a considerably smaller hole than a banana plug hole; I can't recall the maximum AWG that will fit in it, but it's smaller than the banana. (There is a set-screw to hold the bare wire in place under the rubber jacket). |
Question: | Are you sure these are the right angle? Looks like the left angle to me |
Answer: | Right angle: "an angle of 90 degrees, as in the corner of a square or the intersection of two perpendicular straight lines". If you need them to go right instead of left, grab one end and rotate it 180 degrees. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i use this double terminal wall plate to connect a sub-woofer that typically requires only 1 terminal |
Answer: | You could mount it direct to the wall of you create a hole for the back end, but I prefer to use the low voltage wall mounts. Use an "old work" box if putting it on existing drywall |
Question: | Dose this 5 speaker wall plate fit a single electric gang box? If not what type of box is needed |
Answer: | I am not sure what you are asking, but let me start by first saying that this plate and its built-in connectors is for Speakers and ha nothing to do with regular wall 110V plates and switches. This plate is used for hooking up official banana plugs (the + and - in one hard plastic plate) for inserting Banana plugs into its connectors directly. This plate will handle two pairs of speaker wire, each pair as a one piece banana plug. I had to replace the plate that was there because the installer did not know what a one piece banana plug is, and the original plate was made for 4 individual single plugs, which was NOT what I wanted. My speaker wires already have the one piece banana plugs at both ends already from my previous installation. So, this is ONLY for wiring speaker cables in thru the wall to the speakers, and attaching two 1 piece banana plugs into it - one banana plug per speaker.Vincent (05-30-2016) |
Question: | Do I need to use a Low Voltage 1 gang wall mount for this |
Answer: | Wall plate is white. I don't know what you mean by insert. What you see in the picture on amazon is how they look. |
Question: | Is this plate a standard modular plate, like on light switches. Wanting to combine two in a two gang modular plate |
Answer: | I'm not sure what you mean by gang wall plates? You can install them with 2 screws, but they won't be very solid. But if they will never get stressed, the solidity of the faceplate won't matter. Otherwise use a "caddy bracket". |
