In my configuration, I have a MacBook Pro laptop (undocked and closed) and a Dell laptop that is docked (also closed). Both laptops remained closed at all times while I'm using my dual monitors. If I happen to open the Apple laptop, then the laptop screen becomes primary and one of the external monitors becomes the expansion screen. I'm sure this could be changed or altered using your computers configuration settings also. Hope this helps.
