13 best stereo plugs

Stereo plugs, also known as audio plugs or jack plugs, are integral components of stereo jack cables and play a crucial role in the field of electronics, audio cables, and interconnects. Here's what you need to know about stereo plugs:

  1. Connector Types: Stereo plugs come in various sizes, with the most common size being 3.5mm (1/8 inch). However, they are also available in larger sizes, such as 1/4 inch (6.35mm) and smaller sizes for specialized applications. The choice of connector size depends on the equipment you're connecting.

  2. Stereo Sound: Stereo plugs are designed to transmit stereo audio signals, consisting of two channels – left (L) and right (R). These channels are responsible for creating the spatial and depth perception in audio.

  3. TRS and TRRS: Stereo plugs can have different configurations of contacts. The most common ones are TRS (Tip, Ring, Sleeve) and TRRS (Tip, Ring, Ring, Sleeve). TRS connectors are used for standard stereo audio, while TRRS connectors are commonly found on headphones with built-in microphones and are used for audio and microphone signals.

  4. Compatibility: Stereo plugs are widely used in consumer audio devices, including smartphones, laptops, tablets, headphones, speakers, and audio equipment like amplifiers and mixers. They are versatile connectors that allow for easy connection and compatibility between different devices.

  5. Construction: Stereo plugs are typically constructed with metal connectors (such as copper) for signal transmission and durability. The connector's design ensures a secure fit and minimizes signal interference. Some high-end plugs may have gold plating for improved conductivity and corrosion resistance.

  6. Applications: Stereo plugs are used in a variety of applications, such as connecting headphones to audio sources, plugging musical instruments into amplifiers, linking audio equipment in professional setups, and interfacing with car stereos or home theater systems.

  7. Adapters: In cases where equipment has different connector types, adapters are available to convert between stereo plugs and other connector standards, like RCA or XLR, ensuring compatibility across a wide range of devices.

  8. Insertion and Removal: When inserting or removing a stereo plug, it's important to handle the plug itself rather than pulling on the cable, as excessive force can damage the cable or the plug's connections. A firm but gentle grip on the plug is recommended.

In conclusion, stereo plugs are essential components in the world of audio cables and interconnects. They enable the transmission of stereo audio signals between various devices, making them a key part of audio systems, headphones, and other audio-related accessories. Understanding the different types of plugs and their applications is crucial for ensuring proper connections and optimal audio quality.

User questions & answers

Question: If I want to prevent audio coming through tab speakers, will putting one of these in trick the tablet into thinking it's sending signal to headphones
Answer: It will if the unit mutes your speaker (it will act like a open or broken wires).
Question: Will these work with headphones that have volume up/down buttons
Answer: It should. This is TRRS, meaning there are 4 electrical contacts, as opposed to the 3 contacts on your regular TRS aux heads. They both have a contact for ground, your left speaker, and your right speaker. The difference with this one is that the 4th contact is connected to your volume button(s). Just solder the wires to the right contacts and you should be fine.
Question: New to soldering. On first try everything worked but the mic, can you confirm the mic wire solder placement on the sleeve
Answer: Looking at the jack from the tip to the jacket, there are four contacts to solder the wires to: Tip, Ring1, Ring2 and the Sleeve. Wiring is as follows: - For OMTP (mostly older smart phones): Tip = Left Speaker; Ring1 = Right Speaker; Ring2 = Microphone; Sleeve = Ground - For CTIA (e.g. Xbox, Apple devices): Tip = Left Speaker; Ring1 = Right Speaker; Ring2 = Ground; Sleeve = Microphone See http://www.pineapplefreefall.com/fixing-the-xbox-one-stereo-headset/ for more details and a picture showing jack wiring.
Question: Will this work while swimming
Answer: No. It doesn't. This is not waterproof one

User questions & answers

Question: Which end of the banana do you plug it into
Answer: The top, where the stem attached to the tree -- where you normally start peeling the banana. But, no need to peel first before using these, as they will plug right into the stem.
Question: which is thicker a 12 gauge wire or a16 gauge wire
Answer: I read somewhere that says the gauge number is actually a fraction of an inch. So the higher the fraction the smaller the wire. e.g. 1/12" is larger than 1/16"
Question: Is the banana plug the same as an rca plug
Answer: No. It's a single conductor.
Question: The female connection each plug is said to have is hard to visualize. Is there a picture demonstrating its use
Answer: It is pretty simple. You should have a whole in the middle of where your speaker wire hooks in. Instead of using raw wire you can attach it to the plug and then plug it in the receiver jack.

User questions & answers

Question: Would these be a tighter fit on the back of my car receiver where i have 3 ( sets ) of rca outputs and of course 2 amps
Answer: You can't replace RCA plugs with banana plugs. Two different animals. RCA carries the signal in the center plug and ground on the outer portion. Banana plugs are just one connection, not two.
Question: Will this fit polk speaker t15 and t
Answer: Will fit any make speaker or receiver with with banana plug setup
Question: are these compatible with an early 1990's yamaha receiver and yamaha speakers
Answer: Possibly. It fits mine which is a Yamaha RX-V730 Av receiver.
Question: Is the body conductive? Is there a danger of accidental shorting out
Answer: I got home today and ohm'd them out. Yes they are conductive from the gold banana plug to the silver colored metal jacket. Again they fit pretty snug into the banana plug receptacles on the amp and they are far enough apart I'm not worried about them getting shorted. Unless your dropping metal on them or something like that they should be fine.

User questions & answers

Question: I bought one of these 2 days ago and it only works when it's halfway into my focusrite solo scarlett gen 3 interface. is this normal
Answer: That doesn’t sound normal to me. I would check it on another device to make sure it’s not your focusrite that’s defective.
Question: I bought the 1/4 male to 1/8 female and tried to plug in my apple earbuds but it wont fit. Do I need the 1/4 male to 1/8 female
Answer: I had to use that in order to plug into my Stereo receiver to connect to regular headphone jack cable. so in short yes, as only a Sony cable plugs into their headset.
Question: Which adapter should i purchase to use apple earbuds to a ypt-360 yamaha keyboard? would be greatly appreciated
Answer: Nanyi 1/4 male to 1/8 female connector
Question: Would this work if I plugged it into my headphones to connect to a microphone
Answer: This will work on virtually any device with an old 1/4" plug that you are trying to reduce to 3.5 mm. I actually connected a set of old earphones to my AT2020+ mic and it worked fine. One problem: it's about 3" and heavy when assembled. A new device with 3.5 mm connection can be damaged if not careful. For a mic connection I recommend buying a new high quality set of earphones with a 3.5 mm connector.

User questions & answers

Question: How do you connect these to a 12 volt "go Box" cover
Answer: I do not know what a "go box" is.
Question: When you disconnect the plugs, isn't it easy to short them by touching each other? looks like the whole piece is the same conductor
Answer: If I understand your question correctly, once the plugs are disconnected from the receiver, there is no signal going through them, therefore no danger of short. You shouldn't be connecting or disconnecting the speakers with the unit on. Actually more likely to short out trying to install using bare wire connections instead of banana clips. The clips cover the bare wire so no chance of a stray strand or two shorting across the back of your component.
Question: I have used open screw plugs for years; are there any substantial advantages to the closed screw type
Answer: The big advantage is when installed correctly, you won't have any chance of stray wires sticking out. So then less chance of shorting the wires. On 14 gauge and smaller wire, it shouldn't be that hard to do to install correctly, easily. On 12 gauge wire, the maximum recommended for the monoprice plugs, the insulation doesn't fit very well into the body of the plug, so you just have to strip more insulation off to get it to go easier. One possible downside to them is that the wires stick straight out the back instead of coming out of the side. If you have wall mount speakers with a narrow clearance, that could be an issue. But you could get the open screw style to fix that. At the receiver, it was beneficial to me.
Question: How do you connect these (closed and open type) to the speaker wire
Answer: First I unscrew the banana connector, splice the wire and stick the open wire through the hole and fold it over the threading, then I screw the banana connector back together. I use two pairs of vise grips as it gets a little tough screwing them back together by hand since the wire catches the threads on the banana connectors. Hope this helped

User questions & answers

Question: im trying to make my own test leads for different applications, will these work/fit with a voltmeter
Answer: Depends. It should fit as the multimeters use standard banana plug socket innerds, but for years commercial test leads have no longer used bare plugs because of the hazards associated with accidental contact which would be shockingly dangerous if working with high voltage (yes, these meters are routinely used in high voltage electrical applications - my meter carries a CAT III rating for use with 1000V, CAT IV for 600 V). BUT, I mainly use my meter on ham radio stuff and sometimes on cars - all low voltage DC applications.I just ordered these to make a current (amperage) test rig with Anderson Power Pole sockets. Again, I stress that I am working with voltage running significantly less than 30V (sometimes 24 V systems in aviation or other automotive systems), but I will wrap the plug bodies in heat shrink insulation to minimize likelihood of contact.
Question: I've read that these plugs can accept 12-18 AWG wire; however, I'd like to know what you all have used/what is working best
Answer: I use 12 gauge on my fronts and 14 on my surrounds with no issues. The 12 gauge was a little difficult to get wrapped back around and then screw down, but I really don't know of any banana plug that would we easier, without going to the kind where they use a screw to fasten. This is the easier, cleaner look in my opinion!
Question: The description says: "Can accept bare wire and spades. " How do you connect spades
Answer: As PCKIDZ replied, this is a two function connector. The banana plugs are pushed into the hole in the end.If you unscrew the barrel which is knurled, the smaller shaft is exposed, where you can slip on your spade lug and then tighten the knurled shaft to secure the lug.
Question: whats the differance between open screw and closed screw banna plugs
Answer: "Open Screw" type plug (side wire) allows for daisy chaining or stacking additional banana plugs to the back. This is desirable in DJ applications if you're running a speakers in parallel and if your amp can handle the low impedances. Closed Screw type has the wire at the back.

Sewell SW-29863-12 Deadbolt Banana Plugs 12-Pairs by, Gold Plated Speaker Plugs, Quick Connect

Based on 9 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Get the most out of your home audio system by ensuring the best connection from your speaker cable to your receiver with the Sewell deadbolt banana plugs. Using self crimping teeth These plugs provide a simple, secure, and low profile connection without requiring soldering or screws. These 1.6” inch plugs are extremely low profile making it so you can put your speakers or receiver closer to the wall. Unlike other banana plugs that use low quality metals like zinc alloy The Sewell deadbolt banana plugs use pure copper and high Quality brass with 24K Gold plating. Installation one of the best things about the deadbolt banana plugs is that installation is quick, secure, and requires no tools. Just follow these steps. Feed the cable through the bottom piece. Push the cable back over the teeth on the bottom piece. Screw the top piece to the bottom one. You're finished. All in all you should only need 10-20 seconds for this entire operation. What are banana plugs? Today, many electronics use the banana plug interface, also known as binding post (referring to This connection in its female form). this female binding post connection that accepts this banana plug is found commonly on virtually all audio/video receivers, speaker wall plates, and more. Banana plugs offer an alternative to inserting a bare speaker wire into the equipment. Often a bare speaker connection is not as reliable as a guaranteed banana plug connection. Wires tend to get pulled out or frizzy after time passes. Banana plugs require only one install, giving you a permanent and robust connector at the end of your speaker wire.

  • 24k Gold Plating on Connector and Crimping Teeth
  • Fast Lock technology makes it easy for self crimping a reliable connection.
  • Heavy Duty Brass Casing for maximum durability
  • Wider base minimizes shorting for maximum signal transfer.
  • Maximum Wire Size 8 AWG (10 AWG suggested)

User questions & answers

Question: Are these 4mm or 2mm diameter pins. I need 2mm but none of the good banana plugs are labeled
Answer: 4mm. All banana plugs come in one standard size.
Question: Can i use these on a 12v system as power feeds? if so how many amps? looking for at least 15a on 12v
Answer: That should work fine on a 12v power supply, we use those plugs for a similar purpose on the variable power supply that we have here in the lab.
Question: Can I use with 18 gauge speaker wire
Answer: Yes 18 gauge stranded wire will work fine.
Question: I have the old style speakers that have the connection that you press to push the speaker wire into. Will this work with the new style plugs
Answer: If you are asking if the banana plug will fit into the connectors you push the speaker wire into then the answer is probably no. For that type of connector I would consider coating the ends of the speaker wire with a thin layer of solder once the ends are in good shape so they will be easier to connect and disconnect.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this TRS (tip ring and sleeve
Answer: To tell you the truth I was not aware of a TRS plug until your question arose, I just needed an adapter for my 1/8 inch cable plug to accomodate the 1/4 inch input on my guitar amp for my mp3 player. After googling a pic with an explanation of tip, ring & sleeve it appears to be a TRS plug. Incidentally it works fine, the balance good and it weeds out any unwanted noise. I also use a similar adapter for my Pimentel Acoustic guitar because the adapter hole for the electronics on my guitar is 1/8 inch
Question: Has anyone used this to convert 3.5 mm microphone to 6.5 mm? Or this only work for headphones
Answer: These are for stereo signal for headphones or microphones (they use the same standard plugs). However, they will not work for headphone/microphone combos like you might use with a cell phone. The headphones might work but the microphone won't.
Question: Anyone use these with a Casio PX
Answer: Keyboards use standardized connectors since many decades ago for headphones- this adapter fits the standard 1/4" jack and reduces it to the 1/8" mini headphone jack. So , yes, if there is a headphone jack on your keyboard, it WILL fit.
Question: Has anyone used these with a behringer 4 input 1 output mixer? I bought other ones that only give sound out of the left
Answer: I have had the same issues with all of the ones I have bought. A friend informed me to make sure the jack on the headphones or whatever you are plugin in has only 2 rings not the standard 3. Hope that helps

User questions & answers

Question: i got the fd02b connector. what i needed was the other part that plugs into the radio
Answer: That plug should come with the aftermarket radio. Our harness plugs into the factory connector out of the car; the other end of our harness splices to the wires coming out of the aftermarket radio. If you have any other questions, please call our Tech Support line at 1-800-363-4490 ext 1.
Question: Will this fit a 2003 ford escort Zx2 and will I need any additional harnesses
Answer: No
Question: I have a 94 aerostar with the eq/amp mounted under the head unit. will this harness work
Answer: Unfortunately Ford used multiple radios with different wiring back then. You would have to just remove yours to see if you have the basic blk/gry plugs..probably will work as most of the trucks were the same wiring.
Question: can i use this to replace the aftermarket in my 89 bronco
Answer: Yes if your factory radio has 2 plugs?Ford uses two different radios, 1 plug or 2? Pretty much all the trucks/broncos were the same wiring. You can also look at a wiring schematic to confirm. Although mine is a 96 F350 and a different dash.but the radios looked identical. Cheap casette!

Answer: No machine wrong dont buy
