The 5.0 or 8.0mm isn`t much more than window dressing.IMHO! Example; I have a rats nest of interconnects on my desk stereo because of all the headphone amps and DACs. Since most of that equipment is hooked up with fiber optic(toslink) it is advantages that I used used thicker cables with a smooth webbing finish. I have used thin rubber coated toslink cables with excellent results!

Answer:	The way I set it up was through the TV, at the optical port. Yes, you can turn up the tv volume and it's just like the tv's speakers working. You can also mute the tv's speakers, and the volume control on the tv still operates the volume on the Prozor converter. I didn't hear any background noises, when using it with headsets.

Fiber optic is great when utilized properly, but Toslink can only handle lossless, uncompressed audio for up to 2 channels, surround must be compressed. HDMI is the better standard for hi def audio, and gold plating is also an unnecessary gimmick when dealing with it as well.
