Answer:	The level of ignorance in some of these comments is dumbfounding. For the love of God, People educate yourselves. Optical cables transmit light signals on a fiber strand. They are not susceptible to radio frequency or any other electrical interference like analog copper cables would be. They do not benefit from 'grounding'. The gold plating, insulation, and nylon jacket are purely a marketing tactic for ignorant people. If you look at any other functional optical cable you'll notice the connector ends are almost always made of plastic and the cable itself is akin to a spaghetti noodle coated in plastic. That's because the jacket and insulation don't effect anything except maybe durability and parts you see on this product that are gold plated don't do anything except hold the cable in place once it's plugged in. They do not benefit from 'corrosive resistant connectors'. Similar to HDMI cables, optical/digital signals do not benefit from technologies that very much benefit analog cables. It either works or it doesn't. With respect to signal transmission, assuming the cable isn't defective, the performance of a $1 optical cable will be the same as a $100 cable. Reliability is probably the only justifiable reason for spending more on optical/digital cables. Answer:	There are two specs for this kind of audio--optical and coaxial. The optical terminal is flat on three sides and curved on the fourth side. If both your TV and cable box have such inputs, this cable will work fine (although this particular one is only 3 feet long, I think). Coax inputs look more like normal RCA inputs (round)-if your digital connectors are coax this cable won't work for you. Best I can tell you without seeing your setup!

Answer:	The answer is "it depends." My Samsung TV, for example, will accept the digital audio from my FiOS receiver, but it will convert the 5.1 signal to simple stereo for output. So, if I want the 5.1 signal to go to my home theater system, I need to ALSO use the Digital Optical cable and go directly from my FiOS box (and Blue Ray / DVD) directly to the home theater system. The TV will output a 5.1 signal for web programming (NetFlix / Amazon Prime), since it doesn't do a conversion like it does for HDMI input. Hope that makes sense. If you use a home theater, you should connect directly to it using the Digital Optical cable from the source.
