10 best antenna boosters

Antenna boosters, also known as signal boosters or amplifiers, are electronic devices designed to enhance the reception of television signals from over-the-air (OTA) TV antennas. They are commonly used to improve the quality and strength of TV signals, especially in areas with weak signal reception. Here are some key points about antenna boosters:

  1. Function: Antenna boosters work by amplifying the incoming TV signals, making them stronger and more reliable. This can help reduce issues like pixelation, signal dropouts, and poor picture quality.

  2. Types of Antenna Boosters:

    • Indoor Boosters: These are compact and designed for use indoors. They are typically placed between the TV and the indoor antenna to strengthen the signal.
    • Outdoor Boosters: Outdoor boosters are mounted outside the house near the antenna. They are more powerful and can boost signals over longer distances.
  3. Installation: Antenna boosters are relatively easy to install. Indoor boosters can be connected between the TV and indoor antenna using coaxial cables. Outdoor boosters require mounting and weatherproofing.

  4. Compatibility: It's essential to choose a booster that is compatible with your specific TV antenna setup and the frequencies used by the local TV stations.

  5. Coverage Area: The coverage area of an antenna booster depends on its power and design. Some boosters are designed for single-room use, while others can cover an entire home.

  6. Power Source: Most antenna boosters require a power source, usually in the form of a power adapter. Some models can be powered via USB or directly from the TV's USB port.

  7. Potential Issues: While antenna boosters can improve signal reception, they may also amplify noise or interference if not installed correctly. It's essential to follow the manufacturer's installation instructions carefully.

  8. Regulations: In some regions, there may be regulations governing the use of antenna boosters. Ensure that you comply with local regulations when installing and using one.

  9. Cost: Antenna boosters come in various price ranges, with more powerful models typically being more expensive. The cost will depend on your specific needs and budget.

  10. Alternative Solutions: Before investing in an antenna booster, consider other options for improving TV reception, such as adjusting the antenna's position, using a higher-quality antenna, or checking for obstructions that may be blocking the signal.

In summary, antenna boosters are useful devices for improving the reception of TV signals from OTA antennas. They come in various types and power levels, and their effectiveness depends on the local signal conditions and the quality of the booster. Proper installation and compatibility are crucial for getting the best results from an antenna booster.

User questions & answers

Question: Is there a powered splitter or something that would allow this product to work for placement in between the preamp and power inserter
Answer: If you want to have a splitter between the preamp and the power inserted, you need to use a "power passing" splitter. I used this one from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0018BN0UW/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. You may choose a different one depending on the number of connections you need at the splitter.
Question: can this be used with Winegard FL6550A to strengthen the signal
Answer: No. It has a built in preamp. I used this preamp with the FL6550A antenna and the channels I had dropped in half from 51 to 26. Actually makes the FL6550A antenna perform worse!
Question: Can I use this to boost sig for 2 antennas: Clear Stream's DB4E UHF antenna PLUS C5 VHF antenna? Do I put the amp after the combiner
Answer: I'll add my answer for future installers. I run two dual element antennas pointed in opposite directions and use TWO preamps -> then combine. If I were running two antennas for the purpose of band separation (UHF / VHF) - I might combine first then preamp. The BUMMER here - is that this is an EXCEPTIONAL unit with only 1db of noise. That means it outperforms other preamps that declare higher gains. This Wineguard amplifies the VHF and the UHF signals separately - which would make you ask - WHY ON GOD's GREEN EARTH would you NOT give us the ability to hook up separate UHF / VHF antenna feeds??There are preamps out there that do have separate inputs - RCA has a very popular unit around $20 but it won't perform as well as this overall. Id try FIRST - to combine at the mast- preamp and then distribute. If you don't like the results - you can ALWAYS add another preamp and change it to a preamp for each antenna then combine. What a shame though - since you would only be using half the capability of each preamp in the second scenario.
Question: Will this booster improve (%) both signal strength & quality? Will it make the OTA CH's that are 100% (w/o amp) worse
Answer: You have a given amount of tv signal present in the air, (assuming, your within range and elevation to capture a signal), also signals fluctuate according to temperature and moisture present in the atmosphere. So this is generally a constant changing thing that we have no control. Sometimes there are band openings that cause tv signals to behave in ways in both favorable and unfavorable depending on conditions that are present. Your digital TV tuner in your TV, in order to lock onto a signal, (that signal must be of high integrity and not out of phase). Generally the antennas of higher gain do better than cheap off the shelf small antennas (especially indoor/outdoor models). Also the inexpensive antenna systems that claim 150 or more mile range. All feedline has loss; some are better than others in this problem. The more loss in your TV feedline cable, will result in less tv signal reaching your TV tuner. RG-6 is a better grade than rg-59 resulting in better quantity of signal available to the tv tuner. Tv preamplifiers like this one, boost the signal level at the antenna location so as to compensate for the loss in your cable run to the tv tuner. Another issue is that you cannot amplify a signal without creating noise (distortion), in the signal. Some preamplifiers do their job by not creating so much noise in the signal. (The lower the noise, the better); regardless of gain figures although high gain does help. This unit is of good quality and has the added benefit of separate uhf/vhf antenna inputs for those who need to use single band tv antennas to achieve high results to specific applications. Your TV tuner can only lock onto a signal of high integrity. This unit is a good choice to help deliver that signal to the tuner, assuming everything else is in order. If multiple antennas are used for digital TV reception; they must be connected prior to being amplied, otherwise it will be out of phase and the tv can't lock onto signal like that. Hopefully, I have explained this so it's easier to understand. There is a science behind," how this works". Hope this advise has helped others. 73 and GOD bless K5EWM.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used with an antenna preamp
Answer: Yes, I have a preamp running in front of this device. Doing great. If you're asking if it can be used as an antenna preamp then no.
Question: i have a horse trailer with a roof mounted digtal antenna. will this increase my reception power
Answer: I'm guessing the other 2 respondents might be correct, but the only reason I bought this unit was to amplify the signal I get through Time Warner cable system. This unit is supposed to amplify a signal 15%. What I don't know is if it would amplify a signal through a roof mounted digital antenna. I only paid $15 for mine and it might be worth the gamble.
Question: Can this item be used near the TV or does it have to go in the attic next to the antenna
Answer: For the best performance it is better to locate the amplifier close to the antenna, not the TV. This maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio, which provides the best reception. In some cases it can be very inconvenient or impractical to place the amplifier close to the antenna, in which case you can try in a more convenient location. Maybe your results will be acceptable. But if performance is only so-so, you may want to make the effort to get the amplifier closer to the antenna. Other considerations: 1. If you get an amplifier don't be fooled into thinking that more "more dB gain is better". It's not necessarily. Very high gain amplifiers can be more prone to saturation and intermodulation, which can make your TV reception worse. 8-15dB gain probably should do the trick unless you've got other problems, such as... 2. a bad TV receiver; 3. a bad or inappropriate antenna. If you're using an old antenna that wasn't designed for digital TV, it may be better to replace the antenna than to add an amplifier to an old antenna that is digital TV compatible; 4. antenna coax cable that is too long or poor quality. Don't use crummy antenna cable. Don't use pitiful RG58. RG59 at least, with quad shield. If you're a real stud, you might consider RG6. And use good connectors. This may mean buying a good quality connector crimper, not some sorry piece of junk.
Question: Can the dB gain ever be too much for a TV
Answer: dB is a ratio, and without a reference, doesn't have a value. Signals from an antenna are almost always in the micro-volts. The 4 output amplifier has a gain of 8dB, which is about 2.5, so the likelihood of overloading the TV's input is low, and if you have enough signal to do that, you wouldn't need an amplifier.

User questions & answers

Question: How is the signal quality during bad weather including snow
Answer: While snow does not have an effect, sometimes, but not often, atmospheric conditions make static when the FM station 65 miles away is in stereo. Switching off the stereo kills the static.
Question: What are the dimensions of this item
Answer: Dimensions 20" L x 9.2" W x 3.6" H
Question: Will the antenna amplifier work on my non GE outdoor antenna? Can the antenna amplifier be indoors in a basement where the splitter is
Answer: Hi RanJay, thank you for your question. Our amplifier is compatible to work with multiple antenna brands with RG6 F-Type coax cable. Yes, the antenna can be mounted both indoor and outdoor. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to respond or give us a call between the hours of 7:00 AM – 8:00 PM Central Standard Time, Monday thru Friday at 1-800-654-8483. Thank you.
Question: Does this antenna pick up vhf stations? this is important to me as most antennas today do only a weak job of it
Answer: NO! It is excellent for UHF, but forget about VHF. I have a signal meter which shows 0 for signal strength for a VHF High band channel. The broadcast tower is the same distance away as other towers broadcasting UHF that is showing on my meter from 98 to 100! If you need VHF, forget this one. You should also check the changes to be made in your area, which could result in more VHF broadcasts in the near future.

    User questions & answers

    Question: Waterproof for outdoor use
Answer: It doesn’t seem to be waterproof sealed. If you’re going to use it outside I think you should plug it into a GFI outlet
Question: what is the adjustable range
Answer: does not include numbers just bigger or smaller range
Question: Does the output go to the tv
Answer: Yes, output is to the usual coaxial cable that goes to the TV Antenna connection on the back of the TV. Or in my case to a distribution hub to send the signal to several rooms.
Question: I run a single tv off of an outdoor antenna, can i place this right at rhe tv or does it need to be a certain distance from the set
Answer: We have the amplifier right under the wall-mounted TV sitting on the mantle. We haven't tried repositioning it elsewhere. The TV jack and outlet are next to each other. I believe it would depend on where your jack and outlet are located to really determine the distance the amplifier can be placed from the TV.

36 DB Cable Antenna Color TV Booster Signal Amplifier VHF UHF FM HDTV

Based on 351 reviews Check latest price

    Product description

Nippon America's UHF VHF FM Distribution Amplifier is perfect for indoor TV and FM antennas requiring more signal gain. It is suitable for all HDTV television broadcasts, as well as standard and HD FM.

Please Note: This will not boost or improve a bad/weak signal, it is made to compensate for signal loss from splitters and long cable runs.

Pick a spot in your television cable run where you can install the booster. A TV antenna signal booster is installed in-line that is, the cable must connect to the input and output of the booster. If you're only boosting the signal for one television, it's logical to install it near the television. If you're boosting signal for multiple televisions, choose a spot near your antenna line splitter.

Installation Note: TV amplifiers that have a power supply (such as this model) should be installed indoors, or in a location that will not be subject to any moisture. A booster should be installed as close as possible to the antenna, and before any coax cable splitters that may also be used.

NOTE ABOUT USE and POTENTIAL FOR STATION LOSS: A signal amplifier/booster will only improve a signal that is already present. This booster should work for any channel that is used by off-air TV stations. There are always situations where an amplifier does not help. If the station is particularly weak, but there are other very strong channels nearby, even radio stations, such radio station signals may block out other TV stations. This amplifier amplifies everything within the point where a local strong station could create interference that covers up the weak station you are attempting to receive.

If the station is particularly weak, and/or there is a long length of cable, or splitters to other TV’s between the antenna and this amplifier, certain channels may also be lost.

    User questions & answers

Question: Can anyone tell me if this diminishes vhf in favor of uhf? [the cda4 channel master does]
Answer: This type of amplifier will boost EVERYTHING nearly equally -- VHF, FM, UHF, Cellphone "LTE" noise, etc.
Question: What’s the in- out switch for
Answer: Following info below is from Amazon's description on their web site. The switch is for the "FM Trap" function. I assume, but do not know, it compensates for FM interference when present. If used the same unit for 25 years and replaced it with the new model last week. It fixed my problem (dead or dying DA) and I am back in business. I have never used the FM Trap. I sometimes had it "IN" and sometimes "OUT" and could never see a difference. Product description Installation steps:1-Connect amplifier as per this diagram. 2-This amplifier can not be used with TiVo. 3-Performance varies from one location to another. 4-Adjusting the gain control clockwise increases your signal strength. 5-In most cases the FM trap should be set to the IN position. ● Switchable FM Trap ● 75 OHM Input ● 75 OHM Output ● 117V Power Source ● Lightning Protection ● Heavy Metal Case ● Low Noise ● Integrated Circuit ● Gain db ● 40 VHF- 36 UHF ● Noise Figure db ● Low 5.4- Hight 6.2-UHF 14 ● FM Trap Attenuation-20 db 95-108 MHz ● Adjustable Gain control Installation instructions: 1.Connect coaxial cable from antenna/ cable to amplifier input. 2.Connect coaxial cable form output to TV set. 3.If connecting more than one TV, use a splitter between amplifier output and TV. 4.Use gain control to increase signal (turn clockwise) or reduce signal (turn counter clockwise). 5.FM trap is used to eliminate FM interference. In most cases slide switch to (IN) position. 6.Red light indicates that the amplifier is plugged into 110 volt outlet. 7.Amplifier performance varies from one location to another. 8.This amplifier generally WILL NOT WORK WITH TIVO. 9.Check the back of amplifier package for specifications and installation diagram. 10. Works with cable modems. 11. Amplifies indoor/outdoor antenna and cable signals for best reception.
Question: Can you install an amplified 8ch splitter into this? I.e. can you “stack” amplifiers
Answer: I suppose you could but I wouldn’t. The risk is that the output of the first amplifier would be excessive to the input of the second. These amplifiers are designed for microvolts in and millivolts out. That’s a difference of a thousand times! My question is, Why would you want to if the splitter is already amplified?
Question: Did you lose any channels before/after this amp
Answer: My TV has a signal input on it and sometimes I would lose a channel because it was not strong enough. This amp boosted it so that does not happen.

Question: Can this be used with satellite antenna
Answer: The Recorder is set to voice record at the 60 DB and higher. If the recorder is in a high noise environment it will record continuously.
Question: Does this only amplify existing channels or might it also pull in channels I don't currently get
Answer: I attached it to my drywall wall inside. It ships with concrete anchors. You need to provide your own lag bolts when installing on internal wall studs. You will need a stud finder. I used 4 lag bolts and then in every other hole in the mount I used drywall anchors rated for 40 pounds each...the plastic anchors with included screws from Home Depot. I have the 85" Samsung on this mount in drywall and it is working perfectly!
Question: Can this be used in-house on a rooftop antenna
Answer: No, the mounting gear is purchased separately.
Question: I add between the antenna cable and the tv. Do I need to plug this in to an outlet as well
Answer: It's a junior size. My 10 year old wore it and it was a little big, but it looked just fine. I would say a junior small/medium.

Amplify Adjustable Gain TV Antenna Amplifier

The Channel Master Amplify is an easy to install, professional-grade TV antenna amplifier designed to work with any television antenna to boost signal strength and improve signal quality. By doing so, this may lead to an increase in the number of television channels received by the antenna. Amplify's innovative circuitry is specifically built to support the newest digital and high definition broadcast standards.

Most people think more is better. This is not always the case when talking about TV antenna amplifiers. In many cases too much signal will do more harm than good to your overall signal and reception quality. The Channel Master Amplify eliminates the need for the user to be conscious about signal strength while still providing an ultra high 30dB of gain. With the inclusion of an easy push-button gain switch, you can easily switch back and forth between a high (30dB) and low (17dB) setting depending on your reception needs. [Note: When installed indoors directly behind a television set, Channel Master recommends using the low (17dB) setting.]

The Channel Master Amplify includes two flexible powering options. When installed indoors, the Amplify can be powered directly via the included USB power cube or by connecting the included USB cable to an open USB port on a television or set top device eliminating the need for connections directly to an electrical outlet. [Note: Not all USB ports will provide a sufficient amount of voltage to power the amplifier; you will need to ensure that your device's USB port supports a 5V 1.0A output.] When the Amplify is installed outdoors, it includes a USB power inserter which allows you to install the power adapter and power inserter inside your home near the television which injects power up to the amplifier over your existing coaxial cable.

The growth of LTE signal towers and connected LTE devices such as smart phones and tablets have become a common cause of intermittent television signal disruption. The reason being is that cell phone carrier companies operate on frequencies that can be very close to your broadcast TV frequencies. These disruptions can result in weak signals, pixilation or even channel loss, and can be especially disruptive when using an amplifier with your TV antenna. You won’t have to worry about this with the Channel Master Amplify. Built-in filters are designed to clear your OTA TV signal path from common interference including those created by mobile LTE signals.

If you are a consumer or less-experienced installer looking for a professional-grade TV antenna amplifier that provides a convenient installation yet robust quality and performance, look no further than the Channel Master Amplify.

4-Port Cable TV/Antenna/HDTV/Internet Digital Signal Amplifier/Booster/Splitter/Equalizer with Passive Return, F59 Terminators (Lindsay LSA84-EQ8)

Based on 225 reviews Check latest price

    Product description

This is a brand new, four port cable television drop amplifier, similar to the products that your local cable company uses to correct their system's shortcomings. The amplifier allows you to connect up to four devices to a single input connection, without losing signal strength like you would with normal splitters. It boosts signal strength in an intelligent manner, by limiting the naturally stronger signals on the low frequency range and boosting the frequencies on the higher end. Since TV signals tend to natually lose strength on the high frequencies faster than the low frequencies, you are less likely to over-amplify your TV signals and cause further problems. The LSA48 provides a minimum of 0dB gain (which means no signal loss) on the low frequency end (54MHz) up to a +7.5db (approximately 5x signal gain) on the high end 1000MHz end. It improves Analog, Digital & HDTV Picture Quality, and Improves UHF/VHF/FM Antenna Reception! The unit can be used with Cable TV, OTA Antennas (Analog or Digital as long as they are non-amplified). This model packs a powerful punch in a compact, easy-to-install package! If you have multiple televisions or run a cable modem for your internet, this product is recommended. By connecting this signal booster to the cable drop coming in from the street, you can increase the signal strength and eliminate the need for additional splitters, which reduce signal strength. If you are tired of tv pictures that don't seem as clear as they should be, dropped internet connections, or just desire a reliable amplifier to give continuous, steady signal to your home or business, this is for you! Ideal for both indoor and outdoor applications, the LSA84 was engineered to withstand the harshest environmental threats with the capability of enduring repeated high power surges.

    • This is a TV signal amplifier which provides one input and four outputs, for connecting multiple TV sets or cable boxes. Allows multiple devices to connect to an antenna or cable system without losing signal quality.
    • Amplifier includes an integrated equalizer which varies amplifier gain. The equalizer provides more amplification to high frequency signals, which tend to get weaker over long cable runs. All ports provide an amplified signal, with a minimum gain of +0dB @ 54MHz up to +7.5dB gain @ 1000MHz.
    • Suitable for Antenna or Cable TV use. Compatible With All Standard And Digital Cable TV Services, OTA Antenna Reception. Not compatible on systems with an existing amplifier or pre-amplifier. Not compatible with satellite systems.
    • Meets or exceeds all SCTE Standards. PTC Short-Circuit Protected UL Listed Adaptor - Self-resetting circuit protection provides safe protection against short-circuits to minimize outage times. Amplifier has 6 kV ring wave surge design for protection against voltage spikes. Operating temperature: -40 to +60 ºC (-40ºF to +140ºF). 15 PSI weather-tight seal.
    • Prevents image pixelation with digital cable, boosts antenna (OTA) signals for distribution to multiple TVs. May improve cable modem performance. May improve HDTV reception. Includes Amplifier, Power Supply, and two 75-ohm terminators.
