Question: where can I get the right software and cable for this? is there a car charger I can use for this? the ones I see are for the UV-5r...? thanks
Answer: No car charger exists yet. You could find a 12 volt to 10 volt down-converter for a car and charge it in the base charger. The base charger needs an input voltage of 10 volts. Internally it converts the voltage to 8.4 volts for the battery. You must use the base charger because there is a LI-Ion charger inside of it.The Baofeng labeled cable used for the uv5r will work. Make sure you do not get the less expensive non-branded cable. The chipset on the non branded version is counterfeit and it will cause issues. If you have the non-branded version, the radio will transmit when the cable is plugged in and an unrecognized device problem occurs on the computer.The software can be found here: http://www.miklor.com/UV82/UV82-Software.php. Additionally the daily build of CHIRP software will work.
Question: Is there a way to direct access any channel? If I have channels programmed, I try to push 27 (for example), but it never really goes to that channel
Answer: Not sure BUT just use the up or down arrows to go to the (programmed) channel you want. This radio is more user friendly when you PC program in the channels you want to use on a regular basis. Mine was easy to program with CHIRP.
Question: Can this be used to communicate with regular two way radios (i.e. midland, cobra) without having a license
Answer: No matter what you read anywhere on the internet, this radio can only legally be used to transmit on the 2 meter and 70 centimeter amateur radio bands by licensed amateur radio operators with at least a Technician-class license. It is only Part 97 certified, which means that even though it can transmit and receive on FRS, GMRS, MURS, and lots of other frequencies, such use is illegal. By "regular" two way radios (i.e. midland, cobra), I assume you mean the FRS/GMRS "bubble-pack" radios. This radio can indeed communicate with them, but not legally. It is not Part 95 certified. In fact, in order to use GMRS, you are supposed to have a license for that as well.

Answer: Recent FCC changes in the law allows 2 watt FRS radio's and GMRS- (NO TEST) license has been changed from 5 years $70.00 to 10 years. You can apply on line for a FCC GMRS license and pay by credit card. GMRS allows you up to 50 watts of power. As ham radio operator for 52+ years (W8LM) and a certified FCC volunteer examiner, all too many hams push for people to commit to ham radio, when FRS, MURS and GMRS are perhaps a better alternative. Especially when they only want to use the radio's to contact family or while hunting or in a small business.. FRS-GMRS- MURS radio services are all short distance communications all though with certain conditions reliable communication can be had in a 20 mile radius.

Answer: I have a Midland 75-822 about half a mile is all I get to other portable units.

Question: Does this need to be grounded
Answer: I have a very difficult time opening and closing the one I have at my house and the one at my daughter's house. Especially if I'm carrying a child and trying to do it one-handed. Many times I'll get it open, walk through, but then have to set the baby down in order to use both hands to close it.
Question: Please tell me is this antenna suitable for narrow banded frequencies
Answer: You can, but it is not stable, you will need to stabilize it somehow. We put the ends of the gate between heavy furniture and the wall which helps, but it is much more stable when used as the pen. The instructions say not to use it as a long barrier.
Question: can this antenna be tuned to CB
Answer: Yes, there is a little button on the outside of the gate that you push up or down to open or lock the latch on top.
Question: Where is this made
Answer: I bought 2 extensions and 2 of the superyards for a total of 16 panels combined. I have almost completely enclosed my open concept living room with this setup. I'm actually looking to buy another set of these to completely enclose the room and give my kids an entire room to play in. The thing to keep in mind is that the panels act as either a male or female component on the end. This means that you can theoretically chain any number of them together as long as you arrange them properly (i.e. have some with the doors opening inward with others having the doors opening outward. The real limiting factor is stability. With chaining so many together, you either need to shape the panels into corners like a star to gain structural integrity or do what I did and use my sectional and other soft furniture as a support structure so it won't fall over. Overall, it's a pretty great product. Only complaint is the doors are easy to push through if they throw their whole body into it. I buried the doors behind my furniture so the kids don't have access to them and we just step over the walls to get in and out. Not ideal, but works well. I have a 1 year old and soon-to-be 3 year old and it contains both well with my setup.
