Product description

SEIKO 5 - the meaning of the "5" A great marketer had the idea in the 70ies: to be a SEIKO 5, the watch has to have the following 5 (five) attributes (thus the name SEIKO 5): 1. Automatic, 2. Water resistant, 3. Shock resistant, 4. Date, 5. Day. Please note that some SEIKO 5's are in fact SEIKO 4's, if the "Day" function is omitted, then the Caliber 7S25 is used. The only difference to the normally found 7S26 is the omission of the day wheel. Also re-issues of SEIKO 5 Sports often use the 7S36 caliber. Again the 7S36 is similar to the most popular 7S26, yet it features 23 Jewels as opposed to the 21 Jewels in the 7S26. Please note that all these movements beat at a rate of 21'600 bph (beats per hour) or 6 bps (beats per second). As a comparison, an ETA 2824-2 beats at 28'800 bph or 8 bps. A Miyota 82xx beats at 21'600 bph. Why do I mention these three movements? Because they are found in probably 80% of all inexpensive automatic wrist watches. A market share that is huge, yet challenged these days (2006) by an increasing share of inexpensive China Made automatic movements An automatic watch (also called a self-winding watch) is a mechanical watch, typically with a balance wheel escapement, whose mainspring is wound by the motion of the wearer's arm, instead of having to be wound manually every day. Whereas a quartz watch is powered by electricity, a mechanical watch is powered by a mainspring which must be rewound for the watch to keep time

User questions & answers

Question: Is this a women’s or men’s watch
Answer: You have to reset it, but it's very easy to do. (If you remember. LOL)
Question: how do i set day and date
Answer: My band is approximately 8.5 inches in circumference including the watch. It fits fine on my wrist, a little loose but not uncomfortably so. I weigh approximately 100kg, but I'm not sure weight plays that big a factor in wrist size.
Question: Are all the day names black or some red? i saw some pictures on other sites where sun was red and sat was blue
Answer: The band was about 1/2" to long for my wrist, it is something you can do yourself , go on U-Tube and they show you exactly how to do it

User questions & answers

Question: Is there a man matching style of this one
Answer: Hi! The Seiko SUP880 has a similar cartier styling that would match this one perfectly.
Question: where was it made
Answer: Japan for the watch itself but the leather strap is made in china
Question: What is the expected lifetime of 1) the solar battery and 2) the solar-quartz movement itself
Answer: I cannot answer that question for you at this time. I also purchased the men’s watch. I had one in the 80’s and I was drawn to the Tiffany styling. I believe because it’s solar powered it will be a very long lasting watch. There was an old commercial that Seiko used on television which became its signature branding piece. They stopped a young woman and aske her to respond to her Seiko watch. She was new divorced and mentions that personal when she was interviewed for the commercial. She responded “I’m recently divorced and nothing comes between me and my SEIKO.” She was a hot and she had many gents that were proposing to her. I hope this helps you. Nothing will become me and my SEIKO for sure. Very classy piece.
Question: If strap is 8" end to end, would it be too big for my 6" wrist, with too much extra length beyond the buckle
Answer: No it should fit fine. This watch is perfect for smaller wrists such as yours and mine. The distance from the buckle to the closest and furthest holes goes from 5.25" to 6.75." So it should fit your wrist perfectly.

Question: How long does the charge last? Other solars last 6 months
Answer: It states that the watch dial is black.
Question: Is there a way to reset the date or do I have to let the watch run out its charge
Answer: I have a Seiko "automatic" (self-winding) watch I bought a number of yrs. ago, with a Hardlex crystal. It has several scratches, even though I only wore it for a year or two before it wouldn't keep time (sometimes lost several mins./hour.) I don't know if I got a lemon, or if Seiko's self-winding watches just can't keep time, which is obviously a significant problem. The Hardlex crystal not being scratch resistant is a smaller problem, but still unacceptable. VERY disappointed in this $100+ watch. However, my $45 battery-powered Casio is the BEST WATCH EVER! Keeps perfect time and the crystal is perfect, despite having been worn 24/7 for 15 yrs.
Question: I have a large wrist 8". Will this watch fit or can you add links to the band
Answer: The days of the week alternate, so u get Monday in French and then English; Tuesday, same. So you just need to move button till u find the English language day of the week
Question: What are the dimensions of this item
Answer: The top dial has several functions. In normal mode, the right side of the dial indicates day of the week. The bottom section of the dial is used for setting the alarm, the day, and date. In stopwatch mode, the left section of the dial indicates the power reserve level. A detailed, easy to follow manual is included.

Our Heritage

The story of Seiko began in 1881, when a 21 year old entrepreneur, Kintaro Hattori, opened a shop selling and repairing watches and clocks in central Tokyo. Just eleven years later, in 1892, he established the 'Seikosha' factory.

Seikosha was founded; started producing wall clocks.

In 1892 Kintaro Hattori bought a disused factory in Tokyo and Seikosha was formed (In Japanese, "Seiko" means "exquisite", "minute" or "success" and "sha" means house). It was here that Kintaro Hattori produced his first clocks and these marked the beginnings of a company that was to become one of the important manufacturers of timepieces.

The Legacy Carries On

When, in 1913, Seiko built its first wrist watch, the company’s president called it the Laurel. It was not only a first for Seiko, but also a first for Japan and it was the beginning of a tradition of innovation that resulted directly from Kintaro Hattori’s determination. Today, after more than 130 years of innovation, Kintaro Hattori’s company is still dedicated to the dreams that the founder always strove to achieve.

User questions & answers

Question: How do you remove links
Answer: Unfortunately, I did not remove any links. I love a loose bracelet so I was very happy. But, if I had to take some links out, I would go to the jewelry repair and have them do it. I love this watch.
Question: What does it mean: operating temperature: -5 ºc to 50 ºc? during winter time does not work
Answer: The watch prefers a certain temperature range, and may or may not operate correctly if used beyond these temperature parameters. The temps. you listed are in Celsius. In other words, you may encounter problems if you wear it when the weather is below 23 degrees F, or above 122º F.
Question: Does this have a battery
Answer: Read the description. It does have a lithium battery charged by the sun.
Question: Is the size adjustable
