It does not have the same properties or reactions as nickel. I've had cheap jewelry tarnish or leave brown marks on my skin. This has never been the case with quality stainless steel for me. This is a quality piece of jewelry. I've worn it in the shower, to bed, swimming, all day every day, and have had no tarnish, color bleeding, corrosion, or skin reactions. Unless you are deathly allergic to nickel, I would say this chain is of high enough quality that you should be fine. If you are still concerned, look for a titanium chain.
