Answer:	Yes, I think so, but I wouldn't do it frequently. It really was made to be a carry on. It is a great weekender bag.
Question:	Is the bottom wide enough for books to be stacked on top of each other
Answer:	After a LOT of research, I purchased this bag specifically because it meets size guidelines for Spirit free carry-on. If anything goes wrong (flying Spirit next week), I'll reply again.
Question:	can this fit under an airline seat
Answer:	You are correct, the website dimensions are not totally accurate. The actual measurements as best I can measure are 15" H x 14 1/2 " W x 9" D (at the bottom) and 7" W (at the top). These measurements are with the bag totally empty. When you pack it, the dimensions grow. I recently took a flight on Allegiant Airlines and the bag fit under the seat but needed to be inserted "top" first as the wheels did not go under the seat which meant the bag stuck out just a little. It wasn't that far but certainly left little foot room. Bear in mind though that Allegiant Airlines if a no frills airline and the personal space is limited to begin with.

Answer:	The cover doesn't detach. It is attached on the bottom and zips across top and sides. You just push the cover under the straps and it will stay.
