Answer:	If you leave it closed ALL the time, no. But of course you have to open it sometimes to put stuff in. So yes, in the warmer months, gnats do buzz around inside, and then outside the container when you open it. I suppose if you emptied it every day, you would see few gnats. I empty ours every 3 days or so. To combat the gnats in the warmer months, I prepare a small bottle with a small mouth as follows: I put a drop or two of lemon scented dish detergent in, then fill about 2/3 full with apple cider vinegar. Then I leave the bottle next to the compost bucket all the time. Hundreds of gants end up dead at the bottom over the course of a summer. I suppose they are drawn in by the lemon scent, and then are overcome by the vinegar fumes. It doesn't eliminate live gnats entirely, but it does keep them to manageable levels.

I figure I can use a free Kitty Bucket ( Around 3 gallons & Number 5 safe plastic), drill one 3" to 4" hole with my hole saw on the lid or drill 1/2 holes and hot glue a Norpro's F93 Charcoal filter (5"). I'm sure I could use a knife to remove the filter later when it need to be replaced. The kitty lids shut snug, it has a metal handle, plus for us this will go under sink anyway. I just need to buy the filters. For someone not having a hot glue gun or drill bits it might still be little cheaper unless, you need to buy a drill.;) However, Utility Knife should be able to cut a hole as well.
