12 best shoe dyes
Shoe dyes are products used to color or recolor shoes, providing a new or refreshed look. They are part of shoe care and can be used to revive old, faded, or worn-out footwear. Here's what you need to know about shoe dyes:
Purpose: Shoe dyes are primarily used to change or enhance the color of shoes. This can be done for various reasons, such as matching shoes to a specific outfit, restoring the original color, or concealing scuffs and scratches.
Types of Dyes: a. Leather Dyes: Designed specifically for leather shoes, these dyes penetrate the material, providing a lasting and vibrant color. They come in various shades to match different leather colors. b. Suede and Nubuck Dyes: These dyes are formulated for suede and nubuck materials, providing a consistent and even coloration while maintaining the texture of the material. c. Canvas Dyes: Suitable for canvas shoes, these dyes are designed to adhere to fabric and provide long-lasting color.
Application: Shoe dyes can be applied using a brush, sponge, or spray. The method of application often depends on the type of dye and the material of the shoe.
Preparation: Before applying the dye, it's important to clean the shoes thoroughly to remove any dirt, debris, or previous polish. This ensures that the dye adheres properly and results in an even color.
Dyeing Process: a. Apply a thin, even coat of dye to the shoe, starting with a small section. b. Allow the dye to dry completely before applying additional coats if needed for a darker or more vibrant color. c. Buff the dyed shoe with a clean, dry cloth to remove excess dye and achieve a polished finish.
Color Matching: When choosing a shoe dye, consider the color you want to achieve and select a dye that closely matches or complements the desired shade.
Sealing and Protecting: Once the dye is applied and dried, consider using a sealant or protective spray to enhance durability and prevent color fading.
Usage Tips: a. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific dye you're using. b. Test the dye on a small, inconspicuous area of the shoe first to ensure it provides the desired color and effect.
In summary, shoe dyes are used to color or recolor shoes, and they come in different types for various shoe materials.Proper application and preparation are crucial for achieving the desired color and finish.

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a light purple UGG boots and want to dye it black. Will this work? Will it come out dark black and will it turn the suede stiff? I tried to have it dyed w/ our local shoe repair man and he said UGG boots can be dyed but will not come out right. Thank you |
Answer: | It will not turn your suede stiff. You might need 2 coats of the dye as it is not exactly pure jet black. It appears to be a combo of dyes that make it black. If you were dying a white item, maybe one coat, but since you are covering a color, expect 2 coats to get jet black. |
Question: | can this be used on Nubuck |
Answer: | Yes, This product is for suede or nubuck. Thanks. |
Question: | Does this dye need to be sealed? Using black and don't want it to rub off onto anything |
Answer: | No sealing, I dyed my shoes and it doesn't rub off . |
Question: | can I use this item to dye a shearling coat (outside of it) from tan to black |
Answer: | Few things to consider: If you don't know if the material is treated in any way (it might absorb in some places and not in others, or it might not absorb at all), I would suggest you try it in a small spot somewhere that's not obvious. Also, keep in mind that since it's a coat, I asume it doesn't have lining, the color might be absorbed on the other side too and when you wear it it might bleed on your clothes if the coat gets wet or you sweat. Also, depending on how big your coat is, you will need a lot of bottles for 1 coat, for more coats you will need even more. I would suggest you look into professionally dying this item. |

Question: | anyone have pics of finished products of evening blue and royal blue and nayvy blue |
Answer: | The picture of cans of Evening Blue is on Amazon. I haven't seen the picture of Navy blue but let see if I can get that for you. |
Question: | Wil this help me run for office |
Answer: | Not if you apply RIT "Just For Men" to your sparsely coiffed scalp, right before standing under very hot lights and telling outrageous whoppers to the press. The heat of the kliegs combined with sweat and unusually blatant fibbing may result in continuous rivulets of dye running down your brow and cheeks, for as long as heat and the pressure of "just following orders" are applied. |
Question: | How many yards of fabric can I dye with each bottle? I can't seem to find this information |
Answer: | With the whole bottle 2-3 lbs. I use it for yarn |
Question: | Can this work on glasses |
Answer: | I think what you're asking is if this can fix dye to the plastic frames of glasses. Rit DyeMore is supposedly great for dying plastics. Below is a link with step-to-step instructions for dying Legos which should also work for plastic frames. Hope that helps!https://www.ritstudio.com/2015/04/09/how-to-dye-legos-with-new-rit-dye-more/Also, to the mean answers: stupid is as stupid does. This question was actually perfectly legit. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I woukd like to dye a brand new pair of tan cowboy boots navy blue. Will this work |
Answer: | Not recommended since the dye has absorbed into the leather. Even with deglazing the boot you are not starting with untanned/dyed leather. They won’t come out the color you want. |
Question: | I heard you can restore bronze headstone yes or no |
Answer: | With a lot of scrubing, sanding and polishing yes you can, but you run the risk of scratching it up. |
Question: | I've used this before on a pair of leather boots, but will this work to dye Primeknit on an Adidas shoe |
Answer: | No the ink will bleed on to your hands ..every time you put them on. |
Question: | Can this be used on a pair of sneakers .... just to dye the top part where its pink |
Answer: | I don't think I would. The dye will turn your foot the color of the dye and I don't think it is a "water" repelling type of dye. So if you get the shoe wet or sweaty it would run. Not the shoe, the dye. |

Question: | how much leather does one bottle cover? I have an 8x12 purse but just want to dye the inside flap and trim from gold to black |
Answer: | I could say 2 pairs of shoes. Si that mean you can probably dye your purse with 1.5 |

Rub gently sponge in a circular motion on the shoe surface to be dyed. Apply more dye on the sponge if necessary. Continue this process until the sponge will be almost dry. User questions & answers
Question: | Is the color true to the sample color on the chart or to the picture shown in the bottle? They seem to differ, but maybe they darken as they dry |
Answer: | Hi, it is as close to the sample as possible. We did our best when creating the sample chart but it also depends on the display screen, basically displaying true color on a screen is a challenge |
Question: | Which is the darkest brown of the color choices |
Answer: | Probably deep brown or dark brown. If you are trying to match something like a sofa or chair get several colors for best results. The colors vary quite a bit. Raisen looks almost purple, some a hint of yellow, or red. But when you dab it on they blend really well and end up rich with good depth. I got real nice results like this. If you are not matching anything then one color would do. Like a new project or a pair of shoes. |
Question: | I would like to order black (like the bottle posted) but it's not one of the colors listed. How can I order black/czerny, please |
Answer: | Dear Customer, it is out of stock currently. We have a delivery that isscheduled to arrive in 2 weeks. Would you mind checking then? |
Question: | Will this dye stay (not fade, cracked or chipped) if I apply it in the inside of my shoes? Let’s say the heavy traffic area |
Answer: | This product is not a penetrating dye. Behaves more like a paint. Probably not suited for surfaces which will come in contact with or be abraded by another surface or object |
Question: | I have a pair of white leather tennis shoes. Will this work on them and will the color last |
Answer: | Yes it will and you'll be amazed with the results |
Question: | Might be stupid question but is it still flammable after it dries? i want to bring like back to my old welding leathers |
Answer: | Doubt it but I would test that theory first |
Question: | Can this be used on leather car seats |
Answer: | I do not know. I used on shoes and was extremely pleased. I turned white leather shoes black. |
Question: | Is the color water-fast? I want to use on a leather car seat. If rain water drips or splashes on it, will color run and come off on clothing |
Answer: | Hi, I did not know so I rubbed a little wet towel on the boot and some color came out from the boot I dyed with this product. Hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will my shoes be crunchy when the paint dries |
Answer: | No, it's shoe polish not paint. |
Question: | Looking for a sneaker cleaner--not for the fabric but for the white rubber sidewall that runs around the shoe. bulit-in brush would be great |
Answer: | So this can whiten the sole on the sneaker but will make a mess, plus it will wear off. What you need to get is “Angelus sole bright” made specially to whiten sneaker soles. |
Question: | Does this clean or cover |
Answer: | I believe this is a cover, not a cleaner. |
Question: | I have a little black mark on my Nike shoes it's on the white checkmark will it cover it? It's a almost rubbery surface |
Answer: | Kiwi has another product for scuffs. What I would try is first use 2 coats of the kiwi scuff. Let each coat dry completely and wipe shoes after each coat. Let completely dry overnight. Then repeat process with 2 coats of Kiwi Whitener. Kiwi sport shoe whitener is for cloth, not leather. Even after some of the original white came off my leather shoes, I used this process to cover it up and it worked. My shoes always look new and after wiping the shoes after each coat dries really shine nice. So you really need 2 Kiwi products. Good luck. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I am looking for Kiwi's brown shoe dye but I keep finding it in black. Will the scuff cover work the same |
Answer: | same to me, i can't find any brown dye from kiwi. did you try this one? did it rub? |
Question: | can I use this product for fabric shoes? If the answer is no,can someone recommend which similar product is made for fabric shoes, to make them darker |
Answer: | I have used acrylic paint in the little bottles from Michaels to permanently re-color fabric shoes. Buy the brown color you like. (maybe get a couple of colors you like to test on a piece of fabric) mix half and half with rubbing alcohol, blend well and carefully paint the color on the fabric. This also works on light-colored faux suede shoes. |
Question: | Can you use this for leather bags? Does it rub off on clothes |
Answer: | I used it on leather furniture to cover a bad scuff, but I would suspect you can use it on any darker-colored brown leather good. There is drying time involved and I had to apply, let dry, repeat a number of times to fully conceal my scuff. Once dried though, it seems pretty colorfast. Mine is in an area where I'm not constantly rubbing it, but when you run your hand over it, nothing comes off on your hand. |
Question: | Can you use this item on suede |
Answer: | No definitely not. It wouldn't spread at all |

Question: | If I put this on a purse with worn spidered areas with no color, should I get a color slightly lighter or darker since I can't match it exactly |
Answer: | I think you would have to do the entire purse. |
Question: | Can I use this on boots that were previously sprayed with waterproofing spray |
Answer: | Before you apply the dye, you need to lightly sand the surface (included). I would think this would take care of the water proofing spray, but can't be positive. |
Question: | If I put this on a purse with worn spidered areas with no color, should I get a color slightly lighter or darker since I can't match it exactly |
Answer: | the area you apply the stain to should come out darker, logically. |
Question: | can I use this for manmade shoes |
Answer: | I just double checked the shoes that I dyed.....they are all man made materials! This product worked great. It took about 3 coats as it goes on kind of sheer but they cam out great. My coworkers can't believe that they are dyed. And I have worn them several times since dyeing and have had no flaking or peeling. |
