Answer:	It provides some sun protection, yes, but is woven and not a solid surface. Holding it up to the light I can see speckles of light through it but can't see through it.

Answer:	I order as a gift, so I did not wear it personally. However the brim is wide enough it would cover the face and partial neck area; it's weave is dense and I think it would block the rays pretty well.
