It is metal and I think pretty sturdy but it might rust if just left out in the elements all the time. Even if it rusted, I think it would take some considerable time to become non usable. They have to breath and the muck boots are warm very warm and there is not any circulation for your feet to breath, you have to remember these are waterproof and fit snug on your calves, but they are excellent boots for rugged use.
